Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() With the recent actions against Iran, our allies in Europe are demonstrating yet again that this same attitude extends to military affairs. Even before the recent action, cracks have been forming in the postwar order of European military alliances. The UK's moves involving the strategically-important Diego Garcia are just the most recent source of pre-Iran tension. With the strikes on Iran, however, the existing tensions and conflicts within the NATO alliance are becoming more apparent. Arguably the most important NATO allies of France, Germany and the United Kingdom have not followed some of their fellow allies in flatly refusing any involvement, but they are also making it clear that they are not interested. All three issued a joint statement that:We will take steps to defend our interests and those of our allies in the region, potentially through enabling necessary and proportionate defensive action to destroy Iran's capability to fire missiles and drones at their source. We have agreed to work together with the US and allies in the region on this matter. There are plenty of constraints in that statement, but it as at least not outright refusal. Outside of the official statements, these same countries are publicly furious. The French foreign minister, for example: Referring to Israel and the United States' initial assault on Iran on Saturday, he said their "unilateral strikes" could have gained the legitimacy needed only by going before the U.N. Security Council. So they say they'll aid with defense, but simultaneously call the action "illegitimate." Germany's foreign minister, despite the joint statement, has asserted that Germany will not get involved militarily. None have gone so far as Turkey or Spain. Turkey - a NATO member - is firmly opposed to the strikes in their entirety, with Erdogan saying In his strongest opposition yet to the attacks, Erdogan said they were a "clear violation of international law".Hardly the talk of an ally. But it could be worse. It could be Spain. Spain has gone so far as to forbid the United States to use its joint bases in Spain for anything to do with action against Iran. Spain's foreign minister has asserted that any US use of those joint bases is subordinate to the UN or "international support:" "I want to be very clear and very plain," he told Telecinco. "The bases are not being used -- nor will they be used -- for anything that is not in the agreement [with the US], nor for anything that isn't covered by the UN charter." The defence minister, Margarita Robles, was similarly emphatic, saying neither of the bases had been used in the US military operation. "There is a deal with the US over these bases, but our understanding of the deal is that operations have to comply with international legal frameworks and that there has to be international support for them," she told reporters. These are not the words or actions of an ally, which is almost certainly why Trump has ordered Bessent to begin trade retaliation. Unenthusiastic allies are one thing, but allies that publicly denounce US actions and refuse any possibility of participation, or that obstruct military operations from joint bases are entirely another. I don't know what needs to happen with NATO, but it will not surprise me if significant changes follow the resolution - one way or another - of the ongoing action against Iran. _______ There is in fact very clear "international support" for the USA-Israel actions in Iran: pretty much the entire middle east, including the big ones that matter (Saudi). The only countries that don't support the war are those with interests in Iran -- which is pretty much all of Europe and China. I don't think we'll get a NATO-less Europe anytime soon.
But the increased pressure of needing to meet commitments along with increased social net costs that are in competition with each other is going to instigate a lot of change. Europe seems to be at a point where the old order is doing everything it can to keep the order in place, but they simply don't have the money or support to do it. So, they try importing more third worlders to keep them in power. But, it honestly may not be enough. The breaking of the post-WWII paradigm, led by Trump but helped by others in Europe like Orban, is not getting undone. The native populations are generally unhappy. The establishments have all shown their asses. Hell, Spain's socialist government lost a bunch of regional races right after giving 500,000 illegals voting rights. Wonder what Curtis Lemay would say about this?
The “media” sure targeted him for the politics of the day. He was a remarkable individual. He had to work within the constraints of the time. Led from the front - in Boeing B-17 bombers over “flak cities” in some of the most dangerous (and ineffective, frankly) bombing missions. The 8th had about a 35% loss rate - either KIA, wounded, or POW. Imperial Japan was never going to surrender, tenacity is an admirable trait but they would have fought with sticks and stones to the last. He did not like dropping bombs on civilians, and said so, but this was calculated solely to end the war with the minimum possible loss to Americans. That’s all anyone wanted to do. End the war, by any means necessary. Speaking of Beijing, Stephen Green ended a column with this, which completely sums up my thinking about China, Russia, and Ukraine. In short, China's long term strategy is to make Russia a vassal state.
But not, say, a squadron or two of Chinese-made/Russian-flown stealth attack jets that might be enough to break Ukraine's lines and force an end to the war. Beijing supplies Russia with just enough material to keep the war going, which, in my estimation, is Beijing's way of reducing Moscow from trading partner to vassal. https://is.gd/Stg9NR Posted by: Archimedes at March 04, 2026 11:42 AM (Riz8t) 161

What is interesting about the Turks is that they know this is all about nukes, and that is a threat to them, isn't it? I am not sure if: a) they think Iran was not a threat, and they would leverage off the Iranian power to further undermine the West, Israel, and the Arabs or b) They knew it was a threat, are happy about removing them but are worried about the US having leverage and while they want Iran de-nuclearized, they also want leverage in the aftermath to resolve some border issues in their favor. From CBS News, Feb 12 story,
As pathways to freedom have narrowed in immigration courts across the United States, a record number of detainees are giving up their cases and voluntarily leaving the country. Last year, 28% of completed immigration removal cases among those in detention ended in voluntary departure, a higher share than in any year prior, a CBS News analysis of decades of court records found. That figure only appears to be climbing as the Trump administration's immigration crackdown widens and detention populations swell. The percentage of voluntary departures among those detained grew nearly every month of 2025, reaching 38% in December. The analysis does not include those who were not given a hearing before an immigration judge, such as immigrants in expedited removal proceedings. "It's set up for every individual who is detained to get to the point where they're just emotionally drained and exhausted through it all of the way that we're being treated, to just say, 'OK, all I want is my freedom,'" said Vilma Palacios, who agreed to return to Honduras in late December after being detained for six months in Basile, Louisiana. And yes, the black vote is still a block, still voting on skin color (or adjacency, like Biden), and shows no signs of stopping. Also, they voted for Crockett at the same level as they voted for Obama in the 2008 pres primary, a primary that Obama lost in TX. Hundreds of University of California faculty members are urging the system’s governing board to crack down on what they describe as the “misuse of UC authority” for organized political activism, warning that failing to enforce existing policies could fuel allegations of antisemitism and jeopardize federal research funding.
The letter, sent Thursday to the University of California Board of Regents, comes as the university system faces multiple federal investigations into alleged antisemitism on its campuses, including Title VI civil rights complaints tied to the Israel-Hamas war and campus protests. Faculty who signed the letter called on university leaders to draw a clear boundary between individual faculty members’ free speech rights and the use of university branding, resources and official platforms to promote political advocacy. They argue that when faculty members appear to speak with institutional backing, it risks exposing the university to legal and financial consequences. No, a run off os a special election...
Posted by: Nova Local ===== Not defined as such. The difference is that a special election is a one shot, one race; runoffs in states that have them, consolidate all primary runoffs local, state, federal, into one election for multiple offices. Turnout is generally higher in statewide runoffs than special elections because the number of races are larger thus drawing more turnout. Posted by: whig at March 04, 2026 12:21 PM (E4rtv) 324

Posted by: Nova Local Depends. It is actually the more ideological voters that tend to turn out in runoffs and special elections rather than the average voter. Paxton spent little on his run so far (4.1 million) and has money in the bank to activate voters for a runoff (probably assumed a runoff all along is my guess) while Cornyn blew through over 70 million bucks to get his votes. That indicates to me that Paxton's voters are committed, Cornyn had to buy his casual voters through adverts. Posted by: whig at March 04, 2026 12:29 PM (E4rtv) 341

A small stocky guy in a club continuously bumped into my lady friends and I on the dance floor, purposefully. My bartender friends saw what was going on, and the bouncers helped him leave. The ladies and I decided some time later to head home, and as we were walking towards their car, a car slowly follows us, then stops right behind us...It's small stocky guy and two bigger guys. I stalled while the ladies went to their car, and of course got jumped. Suffice to say, we all took lumps, I took a slash to the left hairline (thin scar there to this day) and the Germans watching me bash one guy's head into the bars of their embassy fence got a great show. It broke up when Guardia Civil came around the corner and the girls backed their car up shouting at me to get in...It was right around Christmas of 1993, and I have a picture of me with a shiner and the cut. I remember my left jaw being sore from a punch that caught me on the right side... Long story...great times. Posted by: UncleJefe at March 04, 2026 01:15 PM (gAuAm) 343
