Bin the Navy: Trump Announces Iran's Navy Now Sleeps With the Fishes;
US Bombs the "Assembly of Experts" As It Attempts to Choose a New Ayatollah

I mean, come on. Even if you're a pro-Iran antisemite like Tucker Carlson or Megyn Kelly, you have to admit it's pretty funny to bomb the "Assembly of Experts" as they debate who should be the next Ayatollah to be killed within days.

As Iran's ruling clerics moved to fill the power vacuum left by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's death, Israeli warplanes struck at the heart of the regime's leadership -- targeting a gathering reportedly convened to choose his successor.

Multiple outlets reported Wednesday that the Israeli Air Force hit a site in the city of Qom where members of Iran's powerful Assembly of Experts had assembled. The 88-member clerical body is constitutionally responsible for appointing the country's supreme leader, and according to Fox News, the strike came as votes were being counted to name Khamenei's replacement.

Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency claimed the structure struck overnight was an outdated building no longer used by the assembly. Images circulating online from Qom show a heavily damaged structure reduced to rubble.

Khamenei's death Saturday triggered immediate constitutional procedures requiring the Assembly of Experts to act "in the shortest time possible" to select a new leader. Iran's ISNA news agency reported that the body had indicated the process "won't take long." Still, Reuters noted that officials may delay announcing a successor amid fears that any newly elevated figure would quickly become a target for U.S. or Israeli forces.

Trump also announced the complete destruction of Iran's Gulf of Oman fleet.

Iran's naval footprint in the Gulf of Oman has been wiped out, according to United States Central Command, which announced Monday that every Iranian warship positioned in the waterway at the start of Operation Epic Fury has now been destroyed.

On the third day of the campaign, the command posted a blunt update: "Two days ago, the Iranian regime had 11 ships in the Gulf of Oman, today they have ZERO."

The message was unmistakable. Tehran's long-running harassment of commercial vessels in the region, CENTCOM said, is over. "Freedom of maritime navigation has underpinned American and global economic prosperity for more than 80 years. U.S. forces will continue to defend it."

I don't know if that means their entire fleet. Do they have a separate Strait of Hormuz fleet?

One of Iran's only working weapons is its fleet of Shahid drones. (At least when Israel isn't stealing them to make false flag attacks on Tucker's beloved Qatar.)

The ship that carried these drones, for use in naval warfare, was sunk.

It's a tough day for Tucker Qatarlson:

Gotta believe their navy is bigger than 11 ships. Good accomplishment, but 'Gulf of Oman fleet' is a little too qualified... Otherwise they'd say 'the Iranian Navy has all been sunk'... Pretty sure the bulk of their fleet is in the Persian Gulf, not Gulf of Oman... And I'm pretty sure Iran has lots of small vessels. I think those are mostly in the Persian Gulf where they harass the Strait of Hormuz / less open water to cover...

And our job in Iraq wasn't to give them good political leadership, just to make sure the new leader fears attacking the US so for #1...don't care.

===

Problem was much of the Neocon nonsense that the war was about "spreading democracy" and it being some humanitarian mission. That Iraq was going to be this "city on a hill" and change the Middle East.

Looking back, it really was all stupid. Even if Saddam had chemical weapons, etc.

Way more justification to go to war in Iran than Iraq imo. Iran's terrorism had a much bigger reach

Pretty sure the bulk of their fleet is in the Persian Gulf, not Gulf of Oman... And I'm pretty sure Iran has lots of small vessels. I think those are mostly in the Persian Gulf where they harass the Strait of Hormuz / less open water to cover...
Posted by: bearski

No, we pretty much knew all their capital ships and those are gone. With no air cover, surface ships are simply targets. They do have the irregular speed boat swarms but unclear how those work in an active war environment with very permissive rules of engagement to shoot them from far way.

I think, possibly, you might see the Iranians try to drift mines into the Persian Gulf next from land.

The Qataris are the original Arab Camel Traders, they will *always* sell anything to anyone for a buck, including their support. The only god they have ever truly worshipped is gold.

They are always available to the highest bidder, but they will switch sides on a dime if the incentives change. Sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same war.

As soon as it's clear who's going to win, they Qatari's immediately proclaim how much they always hated their old partners and how much they truly Love and Respect their new partners, the winners. That's who the Qatari's are.

Problem they have is that an A-10 could take out 20 or 30 of them in a single pass, they've got no defensive capabilities whatsoever - and if the USAF has been able to catch them in port, then they're already gone.

It does my heart good to see that stupid Baghieri gone, their supposed drone carrier. They took an old cargo ship and put a plywood flattop on it and said "look we have a carrier too!" No defenses, no escorts. No surprise that all it was one F-18 and one missile and bye bye, Baghieri.

As a point to consider, when Chinese influence peddling in DC started to come to light in the late 90s, early 00s it wasn't considered seriously, in part because China was just a weak regional power.

So I do have to agree that they have made significant strides. But the problem is the endemic corruption in their culture. This is common in third world countries and this they have not addressed. This means while they have dramatically improved their industrial capabilities, one shouldn't trust a damn think a Chinese business claims their products can do.

Although China's fertility rate dropped below replacement way back in 1991, past population growth and a stabilization of the fertility rate meant that their number of births was fairly stable for about two decades through 2017. It wasn't until 2018 that births began cratering, due to a combination of further fertility decline and the previous fertility decline catching up to them. This means that China has some years left to be quite dangerous, though the demographic clock is ticking.

161 So I do have to agree that they have made significant strides. But the problem is the endemic corruption in their culture. This is common in third world countries and this they have not addressed. This means while they have dramatically improved their industrial capabilities, one shouldn't trust a damn think a Chinese business claims their products can do.

Posted by: 18-1 at March 03, 2026 04:07 PM (sKqQm)

They have some businesses, mostly the giants, that have realized that consistency is better business than fraud, with leaders who learned in the West. Mid-sized and small-sized businesses still do that but less than in the past.

200 The part of the Iranian navy that I am concerned about is the part that so far seems to be largely unaccounted for: their diesel submarines. They had at least 4 of these.

One was evidently in drydock at Bandar Abbas, so we might assume that it got taken out. That leaves the other 3.

Diesel boats are very quiet when underwater and operating on battery power, so much so that in multiple exercises with our allies who possess this kind of sub they have been able to slip through a carrier's escort screen and get close enough to take pictures through a periscope.

That's torpedo range.

I'll rest more comfortably when we account for the Iranian diesel boats. Until then, we have to hope that the SSNs that are escorting our CVBGs will be able to sniff out any of them that might be lurking about in the Gulf of Oman.

The Persian Gulf is shallow, so I'm not sure the subs could hide there.

The Persian Gulf (also known as the Arabian Gulf) is a relatively shallow body of water.
The most commonly cited and widely accepted figure for its average depth is 50 meters (approximately 164 feet). This value appears consistently in reliable sources like Wikipedia, World Atlas, Nations Online, and various educational/geographical references.

For context, the maximum depth is generally given as about 90 meters (around 295–300 feet), though some sources note slightly higher values (up to ~100–110 meters) near the entrance at the Strait of Hormuz.

Aside from them being at the head of the military chain of command, they were protected by military guards, who were likely in uniform. Hence, the guards themselves were legitimate military targets. So we engaged in a bit of overkill, producing civilian collateral damage, big whoop.

263 The Persian Gulf (also known as the Arabian Gulf) is a relatively shallow body of water. The most commonly cited and widely accepted figure for its average depth is 50 meters (approximately 164 feet). This value appears consistently in reliable sources like Wikipedia, World Atlas, Nations Online, and various educational/geographical references.

That would have been considered shallow and dangerous for US subs in WW2, let alone enemy subs today trying to slip past our incredible escort sensors. Gato-class subs (our middle of the road workhorse in WW2) could dive down to around 300 feet.

I think, along with AH Lloyd, that Xi cannot afford a competent military because it presents a clear and present danger to him. Saddam ditto--his handpicked Republican Guard was faithful personally to him but his general army sucked. Iran seems to be demonstrating the same weakness because political loyalty to a shitty group of politicians or one shitty despot means that you cannot have personal competence at your job as military chief. It presents a clear and present danger to those types to overturn them.

So these governments divide and conquer, rely on cronyism and faithfullness rather than competence, and ruthlessly get rid of those smart enough and competent enough to pose a threat to the country's leadership.

They shipped junk because that was their market, mostly due to labor costs I won't go into. Old japanese tools and things are very high quality in domestic market.

Chinese are fast learners, and can probably make quality, but they are a very very very low trust society. If they can sell you crap, they will. They will cheat on materials, certification, IP, etc. They do because that is their culture after decades of communism and probably before as coolies.

Another thing that is not understood by most is that when you get stuff made in China from an American company it is the American company designing the shit to be junk, the supplier is just making it to spec, junk spec. That or the company has terrible quality problems. It is their responsibilty to manage that.

Trajectory is downwards Archimedes. And that is an old problem with wares from China even back when the Emperor sat on the throne. The merchants and producers would put out excellent product at first to get buyers and then repeatedly cheapen the product until it quit selling. Then rinse and repeat with a new line. Those factories that have dual Western and Chinesium lines like for tools have Western QA teams for the Western goods, and very little if no QA for those Chinesium lines.

So quality variance on the Chinesium no name brands is simply rolling the dice. You might get good, you might get crap, but by the time you complain to Amazon, that vendor has folded and renamed itself something else.

And lastly, the recent years have not be kind to Chinese mfg profits and they have been cheapening every single product due to collapsing profit rates. Japan's quality trajectory was up, China's is at best stable for a few but the rest of the products downward.

391 Pg. 96. Prisoners of the Japanese: POWs of World War II in the Pacific. Gavan Daws.

The Japanese had regulations about prisoners of war dating from when they first fought against white men, in the Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905. ... Prisoners of war of the emperor, the Japanese regulations said, were to be treated with a spirit of goodwill, never subjected to cruelty or humiliation, et cetera. And that is how the Russians were treated.

In 1907 the Japanese took part in an international conference at The Hague, where they agreed to the terms of a white man's convention about the treatment of POWs.

395 I'm sure these along with the subs are being hunted as we speak. Those missiles on board are pretty sophisticated and have quite a range. The ships themselves are stealthy and have a radar cross section about the same size as a speed boat. They are supposed to attack in a swarm.

Were not out of the woods yet on the water.

396 When China was an honor-based society, it may outstanding works of art and craftsmanship. Communism got the worst of all worlds - oppressed slave labor run by greedy factory bosses and no one has any scruples.

The Chinese Hanyang and Kar98 pattern rifles are of excellent manufacture, and fully parts compatible with German ones. So the Chinese can make good things. See also: Taiwan.

Not the point here. And FWIW, about 90 percent of Taiwanese populations are not native Chinese as such but more mutts and not surprisingly due to long Japanese occupation and influence are a hybrid culture. Only about 10 percent origin from those that fled the Chicoms and a lot of domestic politics there turns on that fact. Kai-Shek and his one China bullshit was not a favorite of the indigenous Taiwanese and that is still reflected in their political parties.

But, I am referring to a well known accounts of china and porcelain goods when traders brought them from to the West. Quality would start up fine and then deteriorate. Happened on goods like spices, tea, etc. as well which is why the Brits, in part, started plantations in India for tea.

402 115 102 I think it's a mistake to dismiss them. They're smart, hard working, and educated, and there are an awful lot of them. They've made incredible progress in the last 20-30 years, just not as much as they claimed.

We're laughing at them now because Trump is president, but if it were Kamala, I'd be scared s***less.

======

Their military hardware is shit and they're 20 years in the middle of a demographic collapse that is going to have wide-ranging effects within the country that will make it unable to actually project power beyond its borders for literally generations.

And I suspect most of this was known in the 90s.

They also have a crippling cultural handicap that makes it effectively impossible to develop a reliable materials industry, since they will swiftly cash out any goodwill and trust they may have built up, trading away all of tomorrow's custom to cheat for an extra buck today.

406 Yeah, the Gulf of Oman is between the famous Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea (basically, the Indian Ocean), so this basically means that the Iranian Navy is penned up inside the Persian Gulf.

I'd guess that means that any threat the Iranian Navy might have posed to the US carrier group in the Arabian Sea has been extinguished. Maybe the carrier group can move somewhat closer to Iran now (which probably makes the carrier group even more powerful).

It doesn't seem to say anything about what this means as far as traffic through the Strait, except that a ship doesn't have to worry AFTER getting through the straight towards the ocean. Perhaps that area will be the next to be "cleaned up".

So it sounds like solid progress - an important milestone in the Naval part of this operation that came pretty quickly.
