Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - March 3, 2026 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for very random mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. Disco is handling the Wednesday ONT this week which leaves you stuck with the Dino tonight. Welcome to the Tuesday night ONT which means another edition of very random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. i will be disappointed if the gray boxes are not full of puns and innuendo. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Bonus points if you can ignore Tucker Carlson, Candice Owens, etc. in the comments. [Top photo: Bone take-off from Nellis AFB. Photo by Camden Thrasher. He's pretty good with a camera.]On March 3, 1876, a farmer's wife, Mrs. Crouch, was making soap on her porch when she reported seeing a piece of meat fall from the sky. She said she was 40 steps from her house when the meat began to hit the ground. Mrs. Crouch and her husband believed the event was a sign from God. Mrs. Crouch is on record saying that it was "snowing meat" and that "the meat fell with a snapping-like noise when it struck."The source of the meat and specific meat in question were never determined. The shower reportedly lasted about ten minutes. More than 600 people watched the skies over Bath County late Saturday afternoon as tiny bits of meat fell to the ground. When they landed, onlookers strolled down the hill of Tom Byron's property to retrieve them. What's for certain is the source was far different and much less sanitary than the 1,876 mini-meat sticks dropped by a small plane Saturday. Then the plane arrived and over three passes, dropped the meat, which fluttered to the ground like autumn leaves. As soon as it flew away, folks of all ages began to pick up the packages, lured in part by a chance to win prizes. Among the gatherers was Arliss Shelman of Woodford County, who tallied eight. "It's been a great meat shower," said the third-grader, before admitting it was the only meat shower he could remember. ![]() Venus flytraps are native only to a tiny region of the U.S. East Coast, specifically: - A 75-mile radius around Wilmington, North CarolinaBut why? I just returned home from a week in São Paulo, Brazil, where the Tabernacle Choir performed four concerts.
The guest artist for two of these concerts was Ivete Sangalo, who is a HUGE star in that country. She did an open-air concert in São Paulo last month, and had *1.2 MILLION* fans show up. This was my last trip with the Choir. I'll be retiring in a couple months. Posted by: Half Dozen at March 03, 2026 10:03 PM (EYvpB) 5
Strangest and most unexpected part of this Choir trip? Having lunch, and then dinner a few days later, sitting at a table basically alone with Reverend Amos C. Brown (yes, that Amos C. Brown, check Wkikpedia) and his wife Jane, who oddly enough were traveling with us as friends of the Choir.
Not sure what to make of it, but I think we are actually friends now. Posted by: Half Dozen at March 03, 2026 10:04 PM (EYvpB) 6

There have been many serial killers before Jack the Ripper made them famous. For instance, Giles de Rais killed upwards of 140 children in 15th century France. He was a nobleman into alchemy & the occult and killed mainly young boys for sacrificial parts to offer to some demon named “Barron” he was trying to summon to sign a contract in return for wealth. There are a lot of these types of repeat murderers going back many centuries, they just weren’t known as serial killers but as “demon possessed” and called “monsters”, etc. Many of the early multiple killers were women selling poisons to be used on victims, or poisoners themselves, usually killing spouses and relatives for money & revenge. I'll say the drag coef. chart seems plausible. Pretty sure that I learned somewhere that race cars deliberately create some downward pressure airflow to get better traction and handling. That probably messes with lowering the horizontal drag, but race cars and sports cars have big enough engines to handle a wee bit of extra drag. And Volvos are/were not bricks because of extra drag, they are heavy and full of safety features to make it hard for that teen driving mom's car to drive like he is on a racetrack and end up crashing.

Lower Cd doesn’t necessarily mean better “aerodynamics” whatever that is supposed to mean, or even lower drag force. Because it depends on what a particular coefficient is normalized to.
One value in a set may be normalized to a vehicle’s wetted frontal area adjusted for flow through and another normalized to a monkey’s butt. Shouldn’t they all just have consistent and obvious reference area, chord lengths, and aspect ratio calculations you may ask? AH HAHA HAH HAH HAH HAH sigh… And if you are very lucky the study or your CFD guys will actually tell you something about the reference area of the vehicle or monkey butt, or not, and you cry into your slide ruler and make do. Yeahhh, I'mma call bullshit on the aerodynamics poster.
Modern passenger cars, which all look alike, sit between 0.2-0.3. Only crazy concept supercars get much lower. One of the most important factors, and the reason that literally everything looks like a Prius hatchback nowadays, is having the cross-section of your car's rear end being half the area of its maximum cross-section. Same reason short-range pistol bullets just look like a "U," but long-range rifle bullets have a boat-tail. Also, being convex everywhere, like that bullet. Even modern sedans have a big sloping rear window and a tiny trunk lid, so they have a hatchback-like shape, without much of a concave angle where they meet. Pickup trucks, because of the giant right-angle from the cab to the bed, sit closer to 0.6. The Cybertruck looks like a mutant minivan just to get that down to 0.4. The "sports cars" in the pic with the higher numbers have big spoilers, which convert drag into downforce to keep the wheels from spinnin', so their numbers might be correct? Tires/rims, and the shape of the wheel wells matters more than you'd think, too. Posted by: mikeski at March 03, 2026 10:59 PM (VHUov) 225

I suppose that's true because passenger cars and supercars have completely different power plants not to mention different functions. Comparing the shape of a station wagon with intended an intended top end speed of about 75 mph and an acceleration of about 8 seconds in a 0 - 60 and passenger seating for 4 plus cargo doesn't really have anything to do with what a Ferrari intended to do at twice the speed. But you can’t compare those Cd values.
Drag = q * S * Cd Where q is the dynamic pressure of course which varies with the square of velocity, and S is the reference area. Which reference area? Exactly. That’s the problem. It is going to be different for each vehicle and maybe even calculated differently. When you are presenting these things, like in a Horner Drag book you try to be consistent in methodology. You are talking Mode 4, the codes would change every day but would still retain the previous day's codes just in case of a goof. Since three F-15Es were struck, it pretty much rules out three pilots forgetting to reset their IFF to ON when RTB or three different ground crews forgetting to load new codes. So the focus is on the ADA folks much like everything focused on Gettysburg's skipper pencil whipping who was qualified to be in charge and the ship having data-link issues that prevented it from networking with the rest of the battle group. damn near all aviation has IFF (military 100000% has IFF) but I believe the patriot and most air defense has a "auto" mode basically if it flies it dies but might require controller input for final weapons release authority and depending upon how crowded the airspace is that could have played a part and also weather or not jamsheed was distracted by his goat during air defense 101 Posted by: LOR VIA at March 03, 2026 11:31 PM (+uTfj) 319

If you're gassing out a crowd of people on a street corner while you scream at a random tradesman about the "superiority" of your weird-ass vehicle, you should probably be tied to a tree by a chain padlocked around your neck, and fed raw meat in a bowl.

Seeing the name of Dan Crenshaw, I started thinking of other never-Trumpers in our past like Kinzinger, McCain, and balloon head McMillin...who traveled with McCain to Syria. I think there was a thread of connection to them all in not wanting Trump to ever win, and worse. Their hands are dirty...well, McCain is dead, so I don't know what his hands are doing.
It's about as hard to find as the photos we've seen of Hillary "I don't know him" with Epstein, but I found one of McCain's trip to Syria. To find a connection is almost impossible now. Just as Hillary's photos with Epstein are now "AI." Ok. If they had succeeded in stopping President Trump who knows where we'd be today? https://tinyurl.com/bdzxxbc8 I think I am getting my 6mo old baby granddaughter's cough, which is RSV. Yes, I've seen the Green flash, more than once.
On my Destroyer, my 'office' Repair 8 was just beside a Hatch that went out to the Main Deck... we called that area outside the hatch... the Veranda. Many many day, we'd go out to watch the sun go down, before setting Lights Out... (we'd literally set up curtains so when you opened a hatch at night, no light would come out)... So... yeah.... saw a couple. Posted by: Romeo13 at March 03, 2026 11:33 PM (mP0Kj) 326
Looking at the shoot down story - found the report. Ironically what makes it likely that another aircraft was involved is that all the pilots survived. Air to air missiles have smaller warheads than surface to air missiles and may just take out an engine, allowing the pilots time to eject.
The report said the shoot downs took place at the same time there were Iranian drones inside the security perimeter. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 03, 2026 11:33 PM (etYFQ) 327

As far as I’m concerned, geometry is awesome, and involves the same part of my brain as learning foreign languages does.
Learning a foreign language involves learning how to “map” a sentence in English onto a sentence in the other language, and vice versa. So, for me, there is a geometrical component to language-learning. Posted by: Bulg at March 03, 2026 11:37 PM (77rzZ) 332

If it had been a U.S. or Israeli missile, I would expect a statement like, "Yeah, it was one of ours. Took out an Iranian mobile IRBM launcher and two rockets. Too bad they parked it in a schoolyard. Muslims do that, you know."
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Why the Iranians would park a launcher in the courtyard of a girls' boarding school you can ask them that yourselves. Or, as they admit, housing girls in a 'former' missile installation while the weapons themselves were moved over (checks notes) 100 yards. (an odd measure for Iranians, you'd think they'd use cubics). Seriously, if the forensics was in the Iranians interest there would be hundreds of not thousands of photos posted and accessible. Tone Lōc (Anthony Smith) turned 60 today. I spent way too long trying to find good YT link for "Funky Cold Medina"; 1989 was, apparently, not a good year for hip-hop production values. The videos online have different issues, such as having been obviously recorded from an MTV broadcast and redubbed with poorly sync'd audio, or "upscaled" into the wrong aspect ratio. The two live events I checked from that year are even worse, since his vocals are doubled -- he was brazenly just rapping over the album track.
So, here are your options: you can have a decent quality version of the original video, with very quiet audio, but at least you get his funny expressions; or you can have the original album audio, with decent quality sound. Tone-Lōc - Funky Cold Medina (Audio) https://youtu.be/_J52ADRbnWg Tone-Lōc - Funky Cold Medina (Video) https://youtu.be/WaRlPRxOqFs Oh, and "Wild Thing" is just not a good song by today's standards, waaaay too slow; and there's a track called "Ace Is In The House" (from the Ace Ventura Pet Detective Soundtrack) that I really wanted to like, for obvious reasons, but it's just... bad. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at March 03, 2026 11:32 PM (snZF9) Once again I'm imploring my fellow morons to read the USS Gettysburg report if they are confused about how things like this can happen. If the USS Gettysburg, which was literally in charge of air defense for a carrier group while having known problems with its IFF system, can attempt to shoot down 3 US planes because they were getting jumpy about the drone attacks, then a Kuwaiti pilot can absolutely make the same mistake. You can't expect pilots to be fully prepared to defend at all times against missiles especially after they reached friendly lines and are preparing to land. One of the crew apparently didn't even have time to prepare for the ejection because his hand was badly injured. I'm sure there will be an accident investigation for this and hopefully it won't be classified and probably most of your questions will get answered. I coasted through Law & Economics 1st year in law school. Given that I had studied the prisoner's dilemma in 6th grade.... It was an interesting class at times, with formulas for determining expected outcomes based on applications of different burdens of proof, etc., but ultimately was boring. Friend around the corner in the grad dorm, a Phi Beta Kappa (he occasionally reminded me) asked me a few days before the final when I was going to study for it (he wanted to study with me). "I'm not." He flipped out incredulous. "It's easy." "No it's not! It's hard!" "Here, let me show you how to do it...." I got an A. My 48-hour constitutional law take home exam was like that. Same friend wanders in at 11 a.m. (I had picked it up at 9). "Are you drinking a beer?!?" "Yes. Want one?" I went through quite a few. Third highest grade in the class. Civ Pro was in class and I was sober. C+. If I had just gotten a B, I would have gradumacated cum laude.

It can be rough jumping to different genres, because its like a different language. You get muscle memory of all the different techniques of your genre and it can screw you up sometimes when you venture outside of it. I go through it enough with some of the metal dudes. I remember when ozzy went solo, and Randy Rhoads was the new thing. I had to retrain my fingers because back then it was sabbath, judas priest, AC/DC, etc., and there was a demand on trhe clubs to hear ozzy. A little while later Yngwie was the big thing, and he was sooo vastly different that after a long period of playing that I went to play an AC/DC song and I couldn't do it. My fingers got so used to shred style they were tripping over themselves to play AC/DC. They didn't work that way any more. Eventually yeah, and it all gets incorporated. Going outside the genre is even worse, a different language. Wait,You mean thee J geils? As in J geils band? Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at March 04, 2026 12:44 AM (snZF9) 437

Can / Definitely Crank Posted by: Dark Litigator at March 04, 2026 12:46 AM (KAi1n) Angus isn't hard by a long shot, but he is very, very unique. He has a weird stumbly way of playing. The very first band I was in was doing a lot of AC/DC, and I had it down good, but man, you get away from it for a while and try to go back to it you might need to retrain your fingers a bit. A great two-book series from one class is Paige Smith's "A New Age Now Begins." He takes the diary of an enlistee from CT, Private Plum Martin. Using his diary, he fills out what Martin didn't see. We end up with Sgt. Martin who survived the War. But Smith was able to incorporate the human touch from Martin's diary into Revolutionary War events, weaving them together. Just a damn good read. The J Geils Band were a blues/Motown/rock fairly successful band in the late 70s 80s that had a few big moments like touring with the Stones as an opening act but never really cracked the big time other than Centerfold which was an abomination. But they could get an auditorium rocking. They were big in the Boston area but had a lot of competition in the Boston rock scene back then. J was pretty chill and hated the publicity part of it which didn't help. But he knew foreign sports cars particularly Ferraris. Opened a business to restore them and raced vintage ones at Lime Rock. I got to pit crew for him a couple times which basically meant helped get the car to the track and not touch anything. You would've liked his vintage guitar collection. I wasn't allowed to touch them either. Posted by: JackStraw at March 04, 2026 01:12 AM (viF8m) 460

Ronald Reagan sold AWACS to Saudi Arabia, maybe they are lending a covert hand. I think they at least expressed support for the mission. It was opposed by many, but Reagan said it was for security for Israel, back when democrats cared about that, and it would promote peace in the region. I think he signed himself out, his friend said he was pissed about being in the hospital, said he was going to leave. From what I was told he was sitting on the couch with his heart pillow, he coughed...boom, dead. Man if my surgeon told me to strip naked and swim in a shark tank, well yes sir. Home 4 days after...dude killed himself.

The oncology 'appointment maker' returned my call (a layer of bureaucracy). She's supposed to call back with my initial appointment. The ER docs couldn't tell me anything other than abnormal masses. 'Call the oncology dept. Today.' The Doc was real serious when she told me, though. Maybe just protocol.

Tell ya what-- if I'm ever diagnosed with the big C?
Imma go back to smoking cigs!!!! I mean...what difference, at that point, would it make?! Posted by: JQ at March 04, 2026 01:52 AM (rdVOm) It might make a difference. My BIL beat lung cancer. Didn't stop smoking. We buried him 2 years later, shit came back and they fucking missed it. It went into his spine, and he had back surgery years before and was never quite right, so they kept looking at back problems and missed the cancer. I frigging hate doctors sometimes...most times. Oh, and getting all my doctors covered under Medicare was not a snap; my plan was cancelled last December. I had to look at each offering to see if my hospital was in a particular plan. Eliminated a lot. Left a small few. Then the details. I went with a plan to cover the hospital. But the precription part of the plan sucks. I'm now paying for commonplace cardiac meds that I haven't paid for in over 15 years. But I had to go with the hospital coverage.
I fucking hate Obama and every other cocksucking motherfucker and baby diddler for shoving that 404Care piece of crap down our throats. I'm on my third plan in 3 years. They keep getting cancelled. Posted by: RickZ at March 04, 2026 02:13 AM (gKDq2) 516

I forgot to remove my nicotine patch last night before going to bed. OMG! "Vivid dreams" are possible, says the warning label. No shit! Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division You sign up but if you're still working it goes into another bucket. But yes post 65 you are forced onto Medicaid. So like my dad still works but his main insurance is Medicaid but they pay less for him and my mom (also over 65 on Medicaid) because they have private insurance because he still works. But Medicaid is still charged first Posted by: BruceWayne at March 04, 2026 02:25 AM (MGB5H) 525

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at March 04, 2026 02:20 AM (snZF9) I'm single. TBH, I have no fucking clue. I do know my friend will be 70 this Sept. She's signed up for Medicare, but not with a plan. SHe's still working. Married couples I really have no idea. There's weird rules. For example, from what I've gathered, you can't use Prescription RX if you have Medicare Drug Coverage. And who wouldn't have such coverage? Honestly, just check the Medicare website. It's pretty informative about such things. It doesn't just discuss plans and shit. With Mrs. B working, you may have to sign up but just not with a plan. But check. It's MediCARE for the over 65 crowd. MedicAID is for the poor folks.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at March 04, 2026 02:34 AM (2EYjk) The simple difference is MediCare you pay for, MedicAid is a free entitlement. Posted by: RickZ at March 04, 2026 02:36 AM (gKDq2) 536

Hubby has Medicare, plus "Plan G" (the best coverage, if you have any health issues, imo) and a separate "Part D" (Rx) plan.
"Advantage" plans are for healthy people. Dad had Advantage coverage (also known as: Part C) which is the easiest to get because you can sign up right on the Medicare website-- and is (IMO) crap if you have *any* health problems. Medicare supplement plans, such as what hubby has, you must go to an insurance agent to sign up. They are more expensive than Part C, but have better coverage and lower or no copays. Dad should've had Plan G... it was more per month premium, but he wouldn't have had all those $$$$ copays that he had with "advantage"-- think he would've spent less overall, on plan G.
