Gun Thread: First March Edition!

030126 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be the First March Edition? I told 'you people' March was coming, didn't I? Hmmm? Well here it is, and we have not one, not two, not three, not four, but five Sundays this month!! I am exhausted just thinking about it!

Current Events: I generally like to take a break from current events in the comments but I think the situation in Iran, and to a greater degree the implications here at home, warrant an exception. If you would like to discuss what is going on I'm OK with it, particularly with respect to the potential for acts of domestic terrorism and the various threat scenarios, and general self-defense preparedness and best practices. Having said that, please think before you post. Thanks.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

I'm curious, do you have a range membership or do you pay as you go? If you have a membership, assuming it allows unlimited visits, do you feel like you go often enough to make the membership a good value? Are there factors other than cost/use that make membership attractive? Are there any new shooters out there lurking and trying to decide whether to get started in recreational shooting?

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

10 I have a membership at a local indoor range in Dallas. For basic membership - $100/yr 1st year; $75/yr 2nd year; $50/yr 3rd year. Stays at $50 onward. It allows 1/2 off cost of range time ($20 normal) and 5% discount on guns and ammo. Basic break even is if I go at least 5 times a year. I try to go more frequently to make sure I get in some practice and be cost effective.

11 What up RMBS! How did you do with the snow last weekend?

12 They also have family memberships and I believe higher cost memberships that drop out the range fee.

Good prices compared to my location. Well worth going but you might want to think about reloading soon so save your brass if you can. Once fired brass is the chef's kiss of reloading. Once you reload, you can shoot more, especially if the cartridges that you fire are not 9mm or .223. You save some money on those, just not as much as something like 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 45 ACP, etc.

Learn to reload as well. Save your once fired brass as it is worth something for that.

Reloading means you can keep shooting when the wells of ammo run dry. Particular important if you shoot anything other than 9mm or .223.

34 It is currently very sunny and about 12 degrees here, which is certainly the high. Was down to about -20 last night, and it will be again tonight. Not great shooting weather, except there does appear to be some heat in the sun finally, so spring may yet come. This is the time of year that makes it difficult to believe.

I have yet to try my Christmas present from DH. Shoulder surgery and damned cold weather have put a kink in that. Another month and I can start to practice off the back deck. The thought of that makes me smile.

Just like golf or fishing. Lots of geegaws, gadgets, etc. peripheral to shooting that people buy, try, and put on a shelf.

For example, anyone that carries pistols has a lot of holsters sitting in a box, drawer, etc. that they bought, tried, and decided to use something else.

39 My "hoarding/stockpiling" of components - done for multiple mundane reasons, just as with buying ammo (or toilet paper, or mixed nuts or bottled water) - in prior years is paying off. So taken together my cost of a round of any caliber I do is a fraction of current prices.

Again, lots of reasons to reload if one has the druthers and suitable situation. But even on cost, even for common calibers, still a win.

Of courxe, it doesn't load itself. And my goodfornothing crew is sitting there looking at backorders for 9mm, 30 carbine, and 30-06. Hard to find good help these days.

40 I brought up a rebuttal to people that suggested dropping guns to the population in Iran.
My point being that the populace had no experience with gun handling as long guns were being talked about as the option.

RMBS very astutely pointed out that military service was mandatory in Iran.

The option seemed more reasonable when talking about sending revolvers
The current thinking in Iran was if the IRGC saw you with a gun they would just shoot everyone

Good price. Around me, I have guntry clubs--initiation fees and memberships starting at 250-300 per year for one person. Or you pay about 20-30 bucks per visit. The high fees are in part to keep the gangbangers out but it hits those that are poor and trying to simply practice enough to save their lives.

Requiring NRA membership for insurance reasons is very common. Depending on the facilities available, $100/yr is at the low end of what I've seen.

Before the Russians and Chinese flooded the Ayatollah's guys with AKs and SKSs, G3s, MP5s, M1911s, Browning High Powers, and M3 Grease Guns were inherited from the Shah's armories. They're probably worse for wear over the last 40 plus years, but you can't have everything.

Not bad. We got about a foot, but drifts were a good three feet in some areas. The mom's neighbor has access to a Bobcat, so that made it a bit easier to dig her out later. I need a nice mild weekend so I can zero the new scope on the Winchester.

50 Today would have been my father's 95th birthday if the clot shot hadn't killed him. He taught me how to shoot, and he reloaded as well. I have his old beat up shotgun, that needs to be refurbished. It has a lovely wood stock. My brother got the pearl handled Colt .45. My grandfather shot a man in Seattle with it, dude was trying to mug him but when he went for his dog, that was the deciding point. Grandpa may have looked frail, but he grew up on a ranch in WYO and knew varmints when he saw them. Charges were never filed.

Where reloading shines for a common cartridge is the perpetual ammo panics that Democrats in office foist on us. Learn via a cheap single stage press and like riding a bike, you can reload to keep shooting when necessary and when ammo is cheap, simply hoard the fired brass for the scarce times and drop your reloading to a case or two to keep your skills fresh.

A good single stage press can later be used to craft some damn good rifle ammo especially for Grandpa's 257 Roberts or similar legacy guns like the 300 Savage.

It can be used to prep and size ammo, etc. And it teaches you ballistics and a bunch of other useful knowledge about ammunition and your firearm.

70 Isn't that what Hi-Points are today after you factor in inflation? IIRC, each Liberator cost Uncle about $2 each in 1942.

A few years ago Collector's Firearms in Houston had a couple of them for sale. IIRC, they were somewhere around $2K. So a 1000X increase in 80 years. Not a bad investment, maybe even beats the rate of inflation.

I hadn’t thought about insurance and such things. I have settled on an RF in 300Blackout so I can hunt in the woods. If I really like hunting, a 270 win, which is legal here, or maybe a 6.5 Creedmore for field work.

75 Private gun range here was about $250 for induction, plus $150 a year. NRA memberships required. Additional family members are $50 a year but you can bring them as guests.
They do have a lot of ranges including several shoot-n-scoot and shotgun stuff. Basic ranges are free with membership,shoot-n-scoot and shotgun require additional range training, and some fees (for clays esp.).
Have I got my money's worth? No.
After retirement I will (still about a month out).

76 Can a person with no experience hit a moving target at 25 yards?
Posted by: Ben Had
========
In cities, you do not shoot at 25 yards and Iran is urbanized nowadays. Liberators were for the dirty work of taking down the Basijis and various other scum that like to roll down streets with autopistols, etc. and shoot up crowds like the cowards they are.

I like firearms and firearms training a lot but in truth, most encounters of this sort are within 7 yards or so and even untrained people can shoot minute of man at that distance if the pistol is designed as a natural pointer.

Liberators or any cheap pistol are assassination and close in weapons for close range where they fulfill the first rule of a gun fight, have a gun. They also give hope and courage and can be used by the very young, the infirm, and the weak to equalize the odds.

Taking out moving targets at a distance takes training, shooting oppressive assholes at close range takes guts and courage to pull the trigger more than skill. That is why the 22 LR is way up there on the death charts, these are often what the poor can afford, use reasonably, and have put paid to a bunch of murderous assholes with bad intent.

A place about 2 miles from me is around $400 a year, but it's 24 hour access, you get your own key, no additional fees, and you can bring a guest. You can shoot pistol or high power rifles. Its a real nice place. I hear they reduce your yearly fees the next time around. I need to check it out and see what it really costs, because everybody i talked to have reduced fees and nobody seems to know the 1st timer price. They think 350-400, but could be less.

With semi automatics, there is a learning curve, mainly malfunction drills.

Single shot rifles, shotties, or handguns have very simple drills, you pull the non firing cartridge out of the chamber and reload.

Single shots are not my preference but they are far from not being practical even now for those that cannot or will not learn to manage a more complicated manual of arms. Logistics for any uprising is going to be critical and thus making every shot count is important. And that incentivizes capturing enemy firearms and ammo asap.

They aren't going against soldiers but irregulars that are street thugs with regime approval. As I said, these thugs like rolling down on motorbikes and shooting people in crowds--they aren't what you call hardened troops anymore (not true after the Iran Iraq wars but those guys aged out).

The IRGC has more power but are also more visible to our drones, etc. wearing uniforms, and displaying more militaristic displays.

The Basiji are their thuggish punishment and informant brigades, not the trained assholes. But far more numerous than the IRGC on the streets so far by at least a factor of 3-4 to one.

Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at March 01, 2026 07:36 PM (zZu0s)

Not so weird if you factor in rarity. M1s are/were pretty common because of CMP and because six million plus were made. About a million Liberators were made, but because they were literally thrown out of planes over occupied territory, few of those sent into battle ever came back. Those left over in 1945 were mostly scrapped or destroyed to prevent their use by criminals or hostile powers. Because the Liberator itself was made very cheaply, it wasn't designed to last. IIRC, the gun is only good for about 10-20 shots before the stress on the metal will start cracking the breech. And collectors only wanted them long after production ended. High desirability plus a very limited supply of prime examples equals high prices.

I've had a squad of vice cops harass me for a bit in a touristy location and I entertained them as best I could... eventually asked if I was under arrest, they says "no", so I says "bye" and start walking away, they says "But we have your ID". Told them I'll go get another one tomorrow and just tell them some guys saying they were cops took it from me. Oldest 'cop' told his trainee to give back my ID.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at March 01, 2026 07:48 PM (/lPRQ)

97 Blueprinting is such an archaic term. We did this in the 80s.

I think a more modern reference would be 'reverse engineering' with the hope that you can make improvements on the old design.

Anyway, just a thought from the cheap seats. The Chinese have built a civilization on reverse engineering our tech.

That is one of the factors that I figured out reading after action reports for decades from the NRA column and a guy, Clayton Cramer, who started the whole Guns Saves Lives, history prof in Idaho I think. He compiled a vast amount of self defense shootings and it was relatively uncommon for trained people to be shooting in those reports. It was Grandma with her trusty 22 LR revolver, Fred the Butcher with a 32 S&W Long revolver, Sheila who was poor but done with being terrorized by her ex and ventilating him before being beaten, raped again.

Willpower, faith, and courage aka software matters in a fight. Training polishes those attributes but the underlying gumption to do something to stop evil cannot be acquired by training. It has to come from within. Hardware in most cases outside military use doesn't matter as much as the will to pull the trigger and fight.

I just want to be able to defend myself. I have a concealed weapons permit. I train regularly. Police could see I have a membership at a gun club and the staff knows me. Heck, we get checked in before the range opens because they know our cars (me MAE and LazyMessenger).

I keep my Colt pony .380 in the console. Cocked and locked. And I practice with it.

Figure out what purpose you want it for and tell us and we can steer you a bit more. Hunting? Self Defense? Zombie invasion? Target Shooting? First Centerfire Rifle or even a Rifle?

For the most part, cartridges are a balance of what you want to do with them, they can be fine for one purpose but mediocre or awful for another.

Only if the cop is a complete dick, and that does happen. Make sure the cop has a body camera, or if not, that you are recording everything. If something goes bad, you have proof. And no, they cannot require you to turn off your phone. They know that.

We had some seriously screwy State Troopers up here for a bit. Got into some situations that should never have occurred. Recordings from the victims' phones finally got them cashiered.

Just be polite but firm. You don't have to resemble the regulator types on YT. Under Terry v Ohio, cops are allowed to briefly detain, require id, and ask you what you are doing. They can and will look you over to see if you are carrying weapons if halfway competent and if so, they can pat you down for weapons using a brief frisk. To do this, they must have reasonable suspicion. If you are carrying weapons, there are additional steps that depend on state law such as requiring showing a permit to do such, they can take the firearm and check serial numbers, etc.

Look up Terry Stop for the latest and if you put your particular state in the search term with Terry Stop, you will get more of an idea about state and federal caselaw applying to stops in public without a warrant.

138 UAE Confirms They Shot Down 541 Drones, 165 Ballistic Missiles and 2 Cruise Missile Fired by Iran – 21 Drones Hit Civilian Targets

Iran has been sending drones and cruise/ballistic missiles into the entire region; hitting Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan and Israel.

UAE just happens to be the closest...

That's a lot of countries that are unlikely to be open to the current Iranian government being allowed to remain in power in any form.

It's a bit late for the Ayatollahs to start a recruiting drive in Lebanon or Iraq right now. The risk of eating a JDAM from the USAF or IAF has got to be a real downer on the motivation of any wannabe headbangers.

I am seeing those on X and both the US and Israel have formally stated that the apparatus of oppression are being specifically targeted along with missiles and nuke sites. They are now using relatively dumb JDAM ordnance instead of standoffs which tells me that the air defenses and jamming of GPS is dead in Iran. They are apparently dropping Starlink for the resistance to use for communication so the Resistance may actually have a better picture than the IRGC command on what is happening.

145 This week's gun stuff was limited to picking up a couple of silencers. I started the paperwork for one in early January, and the other in early February. Both got final ATF approval on the same day last week.

Oh, and I ordered some new-production M1 Garand clips from Sarco, the long established military surplus outfit. I'm hoping they will be of acceptable quality. First test: Tap them and see if they go "thunk" or if they go "ping!" like the originals do.

146 All depends on circumstances of course, but it's possible to reduce the sunk cost of your reloading set-up (at least a basic one) via patience and buying used.

I kept track of the cost of my initial set-up (Lee 4-hole turret, dies for 3 calibers, scale and basic tools), almost all of it used (though much of it like-new). It was "paid off" in about 6 months of reloading (this is 14 years ago).

Still using primers mostly acquired from guys getting out of the hobby, USN guys changing duty station, etc., most of it at half of then-market prices (= 1/3 of today's).

Part of this is a shameful confirmation that I don't shoot enough. But reloading can easily save money, and not *just* on the very $$$ calibers.

164 Another reason load your own ammo besides saving money. Sometimes ammo just isn't available. At the moment it's tough to find 32 long and 32 Magnum ammo for revolvers. They aren't in high demand (although they should be) so the ammo companies only make runs of them now and then. This can apply to any calibers that aren't hugely popular like 41 magnum or 44 special. If you need 223 or 9mm the store shelves are full.

I always taught my students to be nice but firm in stating their rights but that they had to protect their own constitutional rights because it is not what cops consider their job. Their job as they see it is to apprehend criminals and where a lot of friction happens is when that job interacts with citizens and their rights who aren't criminals.

I would never consent to a search because you can always challenge a search that you did not consent to but never one that you allowed to happen. You do have to id yourself and cars are a matter where you have to sign the citation that you received, have to present license, registration, insurance when asked, and communicate minimally with the cop. You do not have to consent to your vehicle being searched, doing a field sobriety test (those are notoriously unreliable--look up Tennessee's epidemic of those), or admit anything as to why they should lock u up. You may or may not take a ride, that is dependent on probable cause.

180 That video about not talking to cops bugs me. Because, while I have had adversarial interactions with cops, I have only had one that tried the malarkey. Generally speaking, when an office has pulled me over I've known it was legitimate, and had my license and registration handy and not given the officer any reason to think I need to be searched or questioned. This guy is talking to the folks who might be shifty.

I'm NOT saying "If you haven't done anything wrong, you should talk and consent." Absolutely not. But you should ponder why a police officer might roll up on you thinking ill of you, other than the fact you passed on the left or were going a few mph over the speed limit.

The one time I had the cop pulling that baloney was driving a rental through Georgia. And, like a standard quota cop, he was sitting just past the state line looking for people to pull over. Yeah, those guys you can go "I take the 5th with" - but it's going to add some time to your journey.

190 I generally tell newer shooters, depending, that they should keep their brass, even if they don't intent to reload. Depending on your location, once-fired brass is easy to sell to reloaders. And it's just found money, sitting there on the ground. I did that for a few years before I decided to reload and started keeping everything. By the time I started to roll my own, I had almost all the brass I needed.

For 38sp I wanted some uniformity in the form of a common headstamp, so I just bought a case of PMC 38, and shot it. Still makes up most of my 38 brass inventory.

You simply do not have to talk much, cops are trained to get people to talk and keep talking. In an average car stop, they are entitled to license, registration, etc. not where you are going, what you are doing, or you to guess why they pulled you over.

Formal invocation of the 5th is when they take you into custody primarily because it sets up a bright line but most people simply cannot shut up, especially criminals. Cops also lie shamelessly so ignore them.

And it is a mistake to assume they have to tell you what they are arresting you for. They don't until booking so keep shut about it. They either have probable cause or not, and if they don't, then the arrest is likely to tossed by the prosecutor anyway. Don't try your case on the side of the road. Cooperate minimally and get back on the road without being an asshole. Those get special treatment so zip it.

Hi Whig,
Both my 45-70 rifles are modern and can handle regular ammo and smokeless powders but I prefer my black powder loads. At one time I had an original Trapdoor and only used BP in the cartridges. BP substitutes should be safe but I haven't used them in cartridges. The Trapdoor is not a very strong action so I wanted to keep pressures low. Sorry I can't help about the Trail Boss in your question. I know it's a low pressure powder but don't know how it compares to BP pressures.

You’re not gonna believe this latest story. Over the past few years mossad undercover agents infiltrated as doctors and dentists in Iran. The Dentists gave priority to. Key military, and elite Iranian personnel. While doing a routine dental check up, they implanted tracking devices as fillings for cavities. On the other side, Gastro doctors implanted similar devices in their elite patients. Yesterday mossad knew exactly where each one of them were ( komayne’s wife and family members included )and sent missiles at them. Over 400 elite military in government personnel were eliminated in the first few moments ( maybe that’s one of the reasons why they knew where he was hiding )when Israel attacked."

Trail Boss is designed for BP replacement so not asking for loads, but simply whether you use the real stuff or not in your cartridge reloading. I would have to use a different powder measure for BP so I have never kept any around the house. Too fussy for me.

Use Triple X or Pyrodex for the few muzzle loaders I have. Neither of those is suitable for loading in brass cartridges for a Trapdoor.

216 We had memberships at both the indoor pistol range and the outdoor range in Laramie. Both pretty reasonable, I think ~$110 for both J and me at the outdoor range. The indoor range was higher, but it was cheaper for J to buy a membership and for me to go for $10 each time than get a family membership.

After he died (4 years ago yesterday), the range master let me finish out J's membership at the indoor range. For awhile we/I went to the indoor range nearly every Friday night. There was usually no one else there. It isn't a high tech or posh range but they have the best range master ever. I loved that place. Great memories with J, my buddy D, and Moron 496 there.

My local range recently started offering memberships and it would be worth it if I could go 2x/month. I just don't get over there much right now.

38 Special and 45 ACP are like falling off the log easy to reload. Both like a wide variety of powders, primer seating is usually not a problem as both are low pressure cartridges, both are straight brass, and both like lead bullets which means loads can be very economical.

Wadcutters in a 38 SPC with a mousefart powder load are great for introducing beginners or concentrating on trigger pull without worrying about recoil.

Every sea battle goes through the phases listed below. This has been true for war at sea ever since the Battle of the Coral Sea.

Phase 1: Detect the enemy. The ocean is a vast place. You have to find the enemy before you can shoot at him.
Phase 2: Acquire the target(s): What did I detect? Is it the enemy, a merchant ship, or something else?
Phase 3: Track the enemy: IF I've found the enemy fleet, where is he going? Where should I anticipate him to be in the near-term future?
Phase 4: Destroy the enemy. This is where you start shooting stuff at the enemy to hit what you want to destroy.

My guess is the Iranians never got past Phase 1 or 2 because of US strikes on their sensors (radar) or US jamming on any sensors that survived.

224 I've mentioned this before but since black powder cartridges came up it's worth repeating. BP and the substitutes are corrosive for brass. As soon as I get back from the range I pop out the spent primers and let them soak in water for maybe an hour. I use an appropriate nylon brush to clean inside the case and the primer pocket and wipe down the outside. Rinse well and let the cases air dry completely. Sounds involved but only takes a few second to scrub each case.

You want nightmare stuff, Tennessee Highway Patrol is coming under massive scrutiny as they have now racked up in the last couple of years over 600 cases where the driver was charged with DUI and they were totally sober upon blood test results being put in. Apparently Tenn Highway Patrol set up a quota system (denying it) for arrests and so cops are just arresting people, claiming they failed the field sobriety tests, and putting them in jail. Going on all across the state to the point that the TN legislature finally got off its ass and required reports on the fake but true arrests which is where the figures I cited came from.

Lesson is without breathanalyzers (which often are not calibrated correctly in the field) the field sobriety tests have about a 50/50 reliability rate. Blood test is the platinum std. so it is best to take the ride than do the field sobriety tests.

You also see this behavior when governments suddenly need money--they up the fines and arrests simply to make revenue, not for safety reasons.

Watch out for that, several cases where people shooting on public land got ambushed and killed for their guns. Michael Platt and William Matix who killed a bunch of FBI agents and got their arms that way by ambushing some poor sod at a remote gun range.

Now it is gun jugging. From Houston Media.

"The intended victim had just left a local range when he was followed by three men in a vehicle. Upon arriving at his destination, the suspects ambushed him, successfully grabbing a bag containing several firearms. However, the suspects made a critical tactical error: the intended victim was still armed with other firearms. The intended victim drew his firearm and engaged the attackers, striking one suspect in the chin. The wounded suspect is expected to survive, while the two remaining accomplices fled the scene in a getaway vehicle."

Don't forget about the Chinese. If the Straits of Hormuz are closed by the Iranians, that's over half of China's oil supply that's been cut off. The price increases from this closure alone could topple China into a major recession. A prolonged closure of the straits does NOT serve China's interests. And China doesn't have a navy that can pry the straits open again.

270 I have recipes for all my established loads using HP38. Use some Vihtavouri for my "duplication" loads.
Posted by: rhomboid

Currently WW231 and HP38 are the same powder. Has been true since Hogdons started selling Winchester powders. Both are made at St. Marks. Some very old loads out there have different loadings but newer manuals reflect the fact that whatever differences used to exist are no more.

You can ask Hodgons if you don't believe me.

I know that it's fairly well known that W231 and HP-38 are really the same powder, but I've never actually seen anything documented that confirms it, so I sent an email to Hodgdon asking for confirmation and received this reply:

Brian,

Yes they are the same powder we package it for Winchester. You can use the same data.

280 And I have "duplication" loads I've worked up for all my self-defense ammo in all calibers. Matches the recoil. Can shoot through a box of duplication loads for very little cost while maintaining familiarity with all my self-defense factory ammo.

Posted by: rhomboid

I've done the duplication loads as well but using the same jhp bullets as the factory loads. I save my nickeled cases for those as they tend to crack when reloaded more than a couple of times.

Making the old FBI 158 gr +P loads for 38 Special using swaged lead hollow points is also extremely easy. Those hit about like 45 ACP ball ammo. The key is to use the dead soft swaged lead (Remington and Speer sell those or did) bullets as those readily expand at the 890-900 fps mark.

281 Whig, it probably isn't helpful, but I used to run black powder in 45-70 for my trapdoor and .43 Mauser for another rifle. At the time the options were pyrodex, which gives me headaches, and the then newer substitute based on citric acid which I didn't have enough information on to play with.
Since I was already shooting black powder with my Hawkin, it was easy enough to switch.

I haven't reloaded for it for years, so I am not sure about the availability of black powder, but I suppose I should find out, since I want to get back to shooting the rifles.

If you were driving 100 in a 55 zone, you might want to do all those things the lawyer was talking about. If you're drunk, you might want to do what the lawyer was talking about. If you and the boys were smoking some spliff out at the lake and it's not 100% legal where you are, you might want to do like the man says.

Of course, if you're carrying in the last two circumstances, you done screwed up and probably want to shut up and call an attorney. But you also probably don't want the cop to find your gun after you denying you had it on you.

From what I understand, Alliant has some of the original Unique (made by the defunct Hercules Powder Company) kept in a swimming pool storage for reference purposes and they check it now and again. Still good apparently.

Alliant has been hard to get recently because the same plant turns out powder for the US military and contracts for foreign companies I think.

The issue isn't the weapons themselves. It's the electronic warfare capability of a first class OPFOR, something that has never actually been tested in combat for thirty plus years. Say what you will about the Russians, but their electronic warfare at the front lines has been first rate. Their GPS jamming has successfully reduced the effectiveness of HIMARS, GLSDB, JDAM, and more weapons systems we've sent over to the Ukrainians. And their EW countermeasures significantly reduced Ukrainian drone effectiveness until the Ukrainians adapted to Russian methods.

Since range fees are $20, you make your money back with 2 visits a month. (I have not been making my money back. Ugh.) For that you also get a free Gun of the Month rental, visitor's passes (so your guest is free, too), 10% off rentals, and some other stuff.

Those bennies get better if you do the Premier membership ($64/month), including unlimited firearm rentals.

The rifle club I could join is entirely private. Right now they don't even list how to become a member. But it was something like $500 for a limited membership.

Equipment is very reasonable and better than what it was as far as ease of use in reloading. Powder is still expensive, primers have dropped. Brass cost depends on what you are reloading. Bullets from fairly cheap for plated/lead to as much as premium bullets can be.

Banana Ballistics has a weird mix of his own penetration tests. One is a six inch sand box. A sub-sonic 45-70 was one of the few (only one I saw in his vids) to go through. Big slug with very large sectional density. Even regular 50 BMG did not.

For range talk, the range I go to is $300 a year for membership. A short rifle range out to 500 yards, long range that was just lengthened from 1,250 to 1,500 yards, and 8 pistol pits that I wish they would pave or concrete so it’s easier to find brass.

Posted by: Frankie

Is his gun full size, not compact, etc?. Full Size in 45 ACP is not terrible, long recoil impulse. 40 S&W is sharper, Just ride the 45 push and at the end focus on reacquiring the target. Smaller 45 ACPs have unpleasant recoil and watch out for a flinch development.

If you can find some 45 ACP ammo loaded with 185gr or even 200 gr bullets (will be on the box), or lead bullets coated or not, you will get a easier recoil impetus (if the ammo is not high pressure aka +p on the box).

Bullet weight and the amount of powder used (pressure is a proxy for it--the culprit is gas escaping the bore) make recoil worse as they go up and as they drop make recoil easier in the same gun.

That's about right for powder. Still some shortages and a lot of the powder is imported. Didn't help that Hodgdons bought out Western Powder Company so no other domestic supplier. Thus you get Vihtavuori, Norma, and some other imports instead.

I did a box of 9mm last year just to stay in practice. Tons of brass for that cartridge. Have taken though to lightly touching one out of ten cartridges with a hint of imperial sizing wax as it makes sizing a snap without adding a bunch of crud.

Last prep on brass I did was 2022 when I switched over to using steel pins and tumbling instead of walnut shell vibratory. Brass came out spectacular and I did a few rifle rounds using an ultrasonic cleaner. Those came out great as well.
