This is a good point. If you watch excellent ITN films from the 1970s of the fall of regimes in Portugal and Iran (when the Shah's regime was falling, but before the Ayatollah), you see the populace venting their rage on secret police headquarters and local police and army units defecting from the regime.
Living in a permissive environment makes you soft and unable to cope with stress easily. The insane people we refer to as AWFLs are just the end stage of this process.

I haven't seen any opposition/resistance leaders who might be ready to step into the huge void this will create. Obviously the person(s) who might take over wouldn't have stuck their neck out before now, given what Khomeini et al have been doing to protesters lately.
Hopefully we have been working behind the scenes to get Iranians in place who want to do some good in that country. Otherwise, we may see someone worse than those we just took out step into the power vacuum that was just created.

Here's an out of the box thought, Afghanistan is now at war with Paki. The Taliban have mountains of small arms and ammo from Slo-Joe's bugout. They probably at this point need support and parts for the heavy weapons needed against the Paki's army and air force.
So if they transport thousands of small arms and millions of rounds of ammo across the shared border with Iran; they get our assistance to help them and Pakistan murder each other.

I seem to recall seeing some photos a year or two ago of these vast, underground storage facilities where Iran had their missiles stored. Huge. They'd load the missiles onto mobile launchers and drive them up to the surface, launch and then go back for another round.
I think our USAF and the IAF are doing a modern version of the "Scud Hunt." Orbit the storage facility with attack aircraft, a launcher appears... boom. This could go on for weeks. Unless the storage facilities are hit with MOAB's. Which is probably likely once the locations are pinpointed.

That's only immediate control. Everything else operates out of an Air Operations Center. It takes a lot of work to build and assign target lists and plan aerial refueling and waves of aircraft. We've had an AOC in Qatar for a long time now. It runs the "air war" in all of CENTCOM.
Also, the aircraft would be Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) aircraft or Airborne Battlefield Command Control Center (ABCCC) aircraft. Just to put a name on them.
(I worked in AOCs and worked on the systems in them for about 20 years.)

It would be an unmitigated disaster for EVERYBODY. If change comes in Iran sui generis, no one can argue against it. Granted, we have a bombing campaign right now to encourage regime change, to use a term from the aughts, but if it nonetheless comes from within, no one can come along later and say "You're just an American puppet". Then, positive change can happen and true freedom can come to Iran, and might lead to them being a force for good in the Middle East.
