Daily Tech News 28 February 2026

Top Story

  • OpenAI has raised $110 billion in new investment from Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank - sort of - valuing the company at somewhere between $730 billion and bankrupt. (Trading View)

A lot of the stories just report the numbers and not the strings wrapped around them.

Amazon for example chipped in $50 billion, but only $15 billion up front. The rest requires OpenAI to either deliver AGI - human-level intelligence - or a successful IPO. And the deal requires OpenAI to commit to an additional $100 billion in spending on Amazon's cloud services, on top of the $38 billion deal they've already signed.

Nvidia invested $30 billion - much less than the $100 billion discussed previously but not a small amount either - apparently on similar conditions that OpenAI spend all of that and more on Nvidia chips.

SoftBank is also in for $30 billion, but I've seen no details of what they are getting out of it other than a slice of the pie.

By noon tomorrow Ilhan Omar is going to be screeching about her nuanced and extensive understanding of the war powers act. I would say the Democrats will be highly amusing over the next few days if they weren't such a committed Marxist insurgency.

ABC Is playing it pretty straight so far though they did let Martha Radich on which is always a shit show. CBS News s simulcasting BBC, and NBC is simulcasting Sky News. Weird. Not to mention the leftist slant of both. France 24 is running with straight news coverage.

Al Jazzera is always the most interesting to watch live. They manage to get into places the other journalists don't and they can do straight news reporting on occasion. That never lasts and eventually they go full Islamic propaganda. Still I highly recommend it as part of your news consumption cycle.

We all hope for that; but at this point, one has to wonder if that’s true or if it’s just a psy-op to demoralize the Iranian regime even more.
Either way it’s good news.

124 The Chicoms use about 9 million barrels of oil daily as of 2024. About 6 to 7 million of that comes out of the Middle East with Iran supplying 1 million barrels. Losing Venezuela and Iran is represents a 15% shortfall; not fatal but enough to keep Xi up at night.

In general, the ability of the US military to keep the oil ports and shipping lanes open is an essential part of this campaign. I would expect the Mullahs do what they can to shut them down.

They have never had fixed positions--Candace started out as a NAACP grievance junkey and then flipped about 2016 or so. Look up her Autopsy idea for a social media surveillance and reporting program. Bow tie boy, Cucker, has been from CNN, to MSNBC, to running his own Daily Caller, then to Fox from that. In that he was ping ponged to whatever was current and might make him a buck.

These are media grifters just like Me Again and they need clicks, attention, audience so they go for whatever positions and issues needed to get them.

But Candance Ovens and her series just asking questions targeting Erika Kirk is beyond the pale of human decency. And this is in the middle of a criminal trial in Utah for the actual assassin of Kirk going on. Then her horrid fans keep claiming the fact that Erika is not suing is because Candace is right (while ignoring the fact that Candace's idiocies might poison the jury while a trial is going on and that Erika has no wishes do add to that crap.).

Latest was a Candace Ovens special on X trying out an op to claim all her opponents on X were getting paid to do it.

I think taunting and blaming Erika Kirk for Charlie's death in a stalkerish fashion for the feeding of her wallet on social media make a mockery of all her claims of just asking questions.

Ohour did a deep dive on X and finds out that Candace was raised Jehovah's Witness and some other interesting background facts on her. None of them are pleasant to read and by now, she is simply one a monster that does nothing but destroy.

Her current ally Milo was just on X doing his contrarian bit by supporting Iran in florid Islamic language and calling for Trump to be impeached.

He is a tiresome creep that was denouncing Candace in a series of tweets just last year.

Yep. I spent time years ago working in politics and worked for Congress on the floor long ago. There are exceptions but our political process brings out the worst in a lot of people just like Hollywood or the media does.

Sickened me and I only deal with politics on the local level now and went from working in politics to studying it professionally. Now retired from doing even that due to medical issues.

Once you start treating other people like inanimate things at your disposal, you have become evil. You can often tell a politician's humanity by how they treat the people around them that cannot give them any advantage, money, etc.

I think about it a lot, trying to improve my mental models. I currently break the conscienceless down into three IQ bands, with the middle one being the most common because of the bell curve.

At the bottom, the street muscle are low-functioning psychopaths. I don't mean that as a clinical diagnosis; they may be the way they are by chemical abuse, as Antifa mugshots commonly indicate.

Then there are the narcissistic midwits, who are dumb enough to just not think past their own self-interest, and clever enough to be dangerous. The world is full of them.

Finally, there are the high-functioning sociopaths, who are scarce on the ground on average, but clog the halls of power (both public and private).

Did you know, even just counting the clinical personality disorders, there is no solid measure of the incidence of true consciencelessness? I use 6% (1/17) for convenience, as it's in the wide range of guesstimates.

The judges seemed pretty swift. They might have gotten that joke.

Our team, when asked the name of Jon Snow's sword from Game of Thrones, had no idea, and we put down 'Harvey." Hope they got a good laugh out of that!

The last round was German animals -- animal names in German. I knew fledermaus, but seekuh was new to us. We correctly guessed "manatee" ("sea cow") on that one.

As others have noted, Iran committed an act of war in 1979 with its seizure of our embassy, and it has never sued for peace since. This may be the beginning of the end of a 47-years-old state of war; it is not the start of a new one.

240 196 I think about it a lot, trying to improve my mental models.

A hidden typo-making Brit-speaker?!!

USAGE
Care should be taken with the use of the words practice and practise as there are differences in British and US usage.
Practice is the correct spelling for the noun in both British and US English and it is also the spelling of the verb in US English.
However, in British English the verb should be spelled practise.

WaPo of all places described the conversations during contract negotiations.

Basically it was a DoW hypothetical of counteracting nuclear strike against US and Anthropic leaders were telling the US DoW that DoW would have to contact Anthropic to get permission for usage.

Anthropic got bent out of shape because it was used for planning the attack on Venezuela and thus was demanding to be able to change its Terms of Service for the DoW. As a result, Anthropic's contract was voided and the entire company is now excluded like Huawei from doing business with other DoW contractors--like Amazon, Intel, NVidia, etc.

Nuke strike on the company.

281 There are hundreds of other jurisdictions in which Mint operates that don't require this kind of stupidity.

When has that ever stopped them before? They assume people will comply and that will make it mandatory EVERYWHERE. It seems to work that way for all the other mandates they impose.

Best answer is to simply refuse to sell any OS to any entity in California - especially the government. Also, to refuse to register any users for ANYTHING if that user resides in California (and impose it absolutely on CA gov't IP addresses - no tech for you!).
