Hello, Horde! 😊💕
The coolest stove ever is sitting in our kitchen as we speak. Chambers stove circa 1930's. Gifted to us 25 years ago by a work friend whose parents bought her a new gas stove for her historic house. The (not original to the house) stove that came with our circa 1907 house didn't have a working oven, and the stove was perfect for our decor. Sucker weighs at least a couple of hundred pounds.... The American win over Canada was like Trump beating Hill-Dawg.
It was easily predictable for me, unlike for most people. Unfortunately, I gave up wagering when my youngest was born, so I didn't bet on USA hockey like I did on Trump '16. But it was an easy one... most bettors bet on the past, instead of the present, and if past is prologue Canada should have been the sure thing. Problem was, this was the first Olympic games in the last 14 years that the NHL released players for the Olympics - and Canadian pro players have been consistently outclassed by Americans for 30 seasons, and particularly for the last 10. The talent pool was shallow for them, and deep for us. I only got it wrong insofar as it was closer than I thought it'd be - and I didn't know the USA would sweep gold - but I knew we'd sweep Canada. Four burners plus a larger fifth center burner, over which a cast aluminum griddle would go. Oh, and the pilot lights had these little trivets over them, which was great for melting butter or keeping your coffee warm. There were three metal covers that you would pull up and over to conceal the burners when not in use. Sleek, is the best word to describe it. To the left of the oven was drawer for storing pots. You used a match to light the oven. Start the gas, strike the match, hold it to the little intake port, and ...whoosh. Mostly, your eyebrows were not a required sacrifice to appease this oven-god. 86 Well, you have to limit your Bonds to English actors.
Hey, if Vivien Leigh can play Scarlett O'Hara, and Cynthia Erivo can be cast as Jesus Christ in JC Superstar, then Bond shouldn't be limited to British actors. Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, AoSHQ's Plucky Wee One - Eat the Cheesecake, Buy the Yarn. at February 27, 2026 10:38 PM (SRRAx) 121
Without an almost supernatural performance by Hellebuyck, the Canadians win that game by three goals easily. Yes, the US won the game, but it wasn't because we outclassed them.
Posted by: tankdemon at February 27, 2026 10:32 It doesn't change the fact that I called the US beating Canada in both men's and women's hockey ahead of the games. It was predictable for me, even though my boss laughed me off about it. Just like Hillary should have beat Trump, and didn't, and everyone laughed that off. But I won a good deal of money off that. It's how you win big bets and I'm fuckin' kicking myself for not betting these games. C'est la vie, as the Canadians say. *shrugs* Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at February 27, 2026 10:39 PM (BI5O2) 122

Mostly... Posted by: Joe Kidd at February 27, 2026 10:37 PM (nbLIj) Ours has one big "cover" - called the mother-in-law cover - that pulls out over the entire griddle/burner area. To the right of the oven is a chamber that stores pots specifically made to fit in the Thermowell (the 1930's version of a crockpot). We still have to light a match (we use a BBQ flamer) to ignite the burners and the oven. The selling point of Chambers stoves was/is that the oven is so well insulated that in the morning you can preheat the oven to 600°, let it heat for 10 minutes, then turn off the gas and put your food (like a roast or a stew) in the oven for the rest of the day. I can't tell you how many of those old stoves I saw ending up as scrap when I used to do kitchens. We worked in older towns with old houses that were mostly 2 family houses. The oldest I remember was build in 1874 and most probably in early 1900's. Many still had gas pipes in the wall for lighting before houses got electricity. The houses were in the families for generations. The older ones always take the second floor, their kids take the first floor when they become adults and have kids, their kids grow up, grandparents on second floor die off, parents now take the second floor, and it just repeats. The end result is many of the second floor kitchens were ancient because by the time the older ones moved upstairs they didn't give a shit about renovationg. When I started doing kitchens it was at the point where all those kitchens were finally on the last legs. All those old stoves were there, and nobody wanted them. I would get sick watching those things go to scrap. We had to sledgehammer a beautiful 2 tone cast iron gas on gas because it was 100's of pounds, it would never go down the stairs, and most likely was assembled on the job when it was new.

Also, if anyone here likes AKs (unlikely, I know it's an AR crowd), here's my read on them:
Russian AKs are pretty much the worst, aside from the pre-1980 Chink ones (and the post-80 Norincos are no great shakes either, but still better than Russian ones). The exception is Tula armory, especially the Korean War vintage SKSs. Those are good Russian guns with milled receivers. But - in general, for the best AKs, you want to look outside the Warsaw Pact. For standard anti-personnel rifle configurations, I like Sako best, followed by Zastava-Krugevac armory. For RPKs, Romanian ones are great, but sometimes the furniture burns under sustained fire - no big deal, it's all smoke and no fire, and you can easily replace that wood if it chars. Bulgarian ones are OK, too - but still, even with the milled receiver, it's made to shitty Warsaw Pact specs. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at February 27, 2026 11:24 PM (BI5O2) 193
