  • The first transatlantic fiber-optic cable is being pulled up after nearly forty years. (Tom's Hardware)

TAT-8 went into operation in 1988 and then failed in 2002 and was deemed uneconomic to repair. Which not surprising since it could only carry 280 megabits per second - 40,000 phone calls, and an aggregate speed about half that of my home internet.

As the name suggests there were seven prior TATs, with TAT-1 being provisioned in 1956 and carrying 35 simultaneous phone calls. Six subsequent TATs ended with TAT-14 which could handle 9.3 terabits per second - enough bandwidth for everyone in America to be on the phone to someone in Europe simultaneously.

Even that was not enough and it was retired in 2020. Total transatlantic bandwidth today is somewhere in the low petabits.

25 In the continuing saga of updating the home television system, the two 3.5 inch inserts are completed and installed, extending the width of the area on top of the central unit by 7 inches.

That gives me room for the 75" TV, with about 1 inch of clearance on either side from the side cabinets.

45 Yesterday I called around to some local moving services. One, the former veteran who employs veterans, called me back, and we talked a bit. He can have his guys load my furniture on his truck, then either store it or ship it right to my destination and unload it there. One company to hire, as opposed to several.

He sent me a link to record a video of my place, so he could see what kind of furniture he was dealing with. My phone's browser version was unsupported, said the phone. And when I tried to update, it insisted I sign in to Gorgle. I don't have a Gorgle mail account and don't want one. I recorded my own video -- but one minute, the living room only, ran 121 MB. Not sure that's gonna work to mail to him. I let him know, and we'll see.

48 Greetings and good morning, everyone. Woke up feeling dizzy but I'm starting to settle. Spent part of last night on the phone with USAA trying to figure out how to get mom to upload her power of attorney and gain access to dad's accounts. I got lucky with the person I talked to and she was able to walk me through everything I needed.

52 And of course there are problems with the paperwork for that long-ago pension from a long-ago employer of mine. The address on it was incomplete, and they had the wrong month and day for my birthday. The investment place is looking into this, but I'm not gonna see that money for months, I'll bet. And then they will send me the check and *I* have to get it to my IRA people. When the instructions say in one paragraph "direct rollover,* and then in another that it'll be a check sent to me, that's annoying.

Some I may donate, but much of it could not be replaced easily. Where do you find bookcases nowadays, for instance? My desk has a sentimental connection for me. It was our family's dining table and my homework/model-building/writing table for many years. And where could I find a Mission-style armchair now for less than a fortune?

I could use a new box spring, I suppose, and if I go that far I could just buy a whole new bed.
