Gun Thread: Fourth February Edition!

022226 cal scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the fourth February edition? Coming soon; March editions!!

I finished my taxes this week so I'm in a bad mood. Don't talk to me!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Last week we talked about range time objectives and the value of having a plan. If you had to identify the biggest 'problem' preventing you from achieving your marksmanship goals, what would it be? Stance? Grip? Sight alignment or trigger mechanics? What, exactly, are your goals and how were they determined? Are establishing goals and measuring progress important to you? Do you have a logical and methodical strategy for practice and improvement? If not, why not?

Not everyone wants or needs to be a great marksman. Just because you like to shoot doesn't mean you have to go all nutty about it like someone we know. As long as you are safe, perhaps achieving and maintaining a level of basic competency is all you are after. Does this describe you? If you had to guess, what percentage of all shooters do you think would fall into this category?

Let us know what you think in the comments!

Biathlon Competition

Whoa! Our pal rhomboid brings the info on biathlon!!

022226 rhomboid biathlon pic 1 scaled.jpg

022226 rhomboid biathlon pic 2 scaled.jpg

The shooting sport I've long loved is biathlon. Love nordic skiing, but never lived anywhere you could do it as a regular serious hobby, so biathlon was sadly never a real option for me. On a trip to Lake Placid in the mid-90s I did encounter the Russian junior biathlon team (first noticed them as they skated past me like I was standing still - though in fairness I was doing classic style). Watched at the range for a bit - the chain-smoking, vulgarity-spewing Russian coaches didn't disappoint! And I think I still have a Russian 22LR box in my ski wax bag. (I also rented speed skates and glided around the speed skating oval where Eric Heiden and his sister won all those golds in 1980)

Competitive biathlon uses special 22LR rifles for the shooting portion (there are large-caliber centerfire biathlons with long-range targets, nordic field, and moose, which are not part of the international circuit that includes the Olympics). Almost all of these rifles are Anschutz, and most of those are Anschutz 1827 Fortner models, whose ergonomics and features represent the evolved state-of-art. These rifles have a straight-pull action, and use 5-round magazines, which are carried in various kinds of mag-holding slots in the stock. There are also small holes in some stocks for individual "extra" rounds, which are allowed in some formats for make-up shots.

The minimum weight is 7 pounds. Sights are non-magnified diopter with globe front sights (generally). There is a semi-rigid loop harness like a backpack arrangement that allows the skier to ski comfortably with the rifle on their back. There is a small sling attached to the fore-end, through which competitors stick their support hand to tighten up grip and stability. Minimum trigger pull is 1.1 lbs. There can be features aimed at reducing the effect of snow on the rifle and sights, should the skier fall during a race.

And the shooting is what makes biathlon a unique and amazing kind of race. It combines the most aerobic sport there is, cross-country skiing, with a sport that's all about breath control and fine motor skills. You glide into the range with a heart rate of 175, and now need to hit small targets (1.8" in prone, 4.5" in off-hand) 50 meters away. Fast. A good biathlete will clean the 5 target array in 20 seconds - any more, or any misses, and you're likely out of the running.

Competitors generally use 40g 22LR lead solids, with special cold-temperature lubricant and a bit of extra powder. There are usually two shooting sessions, first prone, second off-hand (standing), with a ski lap of the course before/after. Some longer events have 4 shooting sessions.

No other sport like it. And not only does biathlon center around the tension between speed and precision, thanks to the leverage of the shooting portion, it is the most dramatic kind of race around. The clear leader can, with one or two missed shots on his last range session, fall to 15th place - just like that. Missed shots result in either time automatically added to the competitor's finishing time or a lap around a penalty loop next to the range, which adds varying amounts of time depending on conditions and the skier.

I got a one-month subscription to Peacock primarily to watch the biathlon and cross-country in Italy this past week, and it's been spectacular. An indication that biathlon is moving out of its niche is that it is now the mostly highly rated TV winter sport in Europe. Which is incredible really. The amazing advances in cameras (number, type, and quality, to include drone-mounted) and production approach have made both biathlon and cross-country very watchable events. And there's no race format that's more dramatic.

Very nice, rhomboid! Thank you very much!

Does anyone else have biathlon shooting or competition experience?

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com

Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

16 Range report: Took the MP5 to the range for some needed practice. I got good results in semi-auto at 20 yards, but my skills w/ burst and auto at 15 yards leave much to be desired. I can get the shots to land in the target silhouette, but the tight shot groups continue to elude me. I definitely don't have the ability fire three round bursts on the auto setting yet.

17 I picked up an old S&W K-38 a few months ago, and needed it converted back to stock. It was used by a policeman in competition, so it had been converted to single-action-only.

I sent it to the Smith & Wesson custom shop for the work (Weasel's recommendation), and also had them reblue the revolver, since it was a bit beaten up.

I got it back exactly when they said it would be completed, and the work seems of very high quality. The bluing in particular is beautiful...a uniform deep blue that is a credit to the gunsmith!

Pretty close to it. A few folks have triggers set in ounces but unless you have a special purpose for it like extreme target shooting at distance or something like biathlons, they are not safe for ordinary handling as you note.

I do neither of those things even when I was shooting longarms and won't have extremely light triggers around on longarms or in particularly handguns. Often, triggers that light are not particularly drop safe and thus unsafe for normal field operations and training.

21 Watching the 1992 Winter Olympics while I was with Alaskan Tanker Task Force (Eielson Air Force Base, Fairbanks) I watched some of the biathlon. We had too much downtime, so I asked other members of the crew if they wanted to learn cross-country skiing. (Eielson had its own downhill slope and its own x-cou try track.)

I got one other guy to go with me. We went and rented the skis. As we were getting our boots laced up, I asked the rental guy how to do it. He explained putting our boots into the bindings. I said, "No, how do you cross-country ski?" He looked at us like we were asking him how to eat soup.

We finally got him to explain the basics, including the most important part - climbing a hill. And, off we went. Into the hills and woods of central Alaska. Pretty soon we had our ski coats off - it's hard work! But it was fun. Remind me at a MoMe to tell the story of the Bugs Bunny Tree on the route.

I have a CZ TS2 that is about 1.8 pounds, and it is a great trigger. I think obeying the immutable gun safety rules is the most important thing with target triggers. Or any trigger for that matter!

25 Howdy all, thanks for the thread Weasel.
FINALLY got to the range today. Been a few months.
#1 I still know what to do and can do it
#2 Started out really good. Very excited. Told TRex maybe I should only visit every few months, etc. Then the range gods took their revenge.
#3 This has actually become most of my muscle memory, stop, go thru the endless list of fundamentals, and identify what the problem is.
Actually, today's solution surprised me: I do have a mild cataract in my dominant eye, and at times I have trouble focusing on the iron sights. Can't change that, but I now know that by widening my stance I am more stable when trying to focus on the sights. Used this for last 4+ mags and every single hole was within one inch of the center! Victory!

Congrats, old Smith K Frames often can shoot 1 inch groups at 25 yards in a Ransom Pistol Rest using wadcutters. You already know that the barrel is probably accurate if the crown is not dinged up.

27 Range Report!
After a 4-week cold weather hiatus (you wussy!), I got back out to the range last week.
I finally got to finish the .45ACP ladder test with the new Berry’s plated semiwadcutter.
And I found the sweet spot. The other loads were 1.2 - 1.8”. The best was 0.740” at 10 yards from a sandbag. All five making one tight hole with crisp edges.
Made the wait worth it.
So I built 150 rounds this morning.

In the movies, you can shoot a three-round burst, while diving over the hood of a muscle car, while looking at your landing area on broken glass shards, and still hit three widely separated bad guys dead center in their respective foreheads.

I assume Weasel is going to cover that on Saturday morning at the next TXMoMe?

Finally got some shewtin in on an annual camping trip. Got there after the rain stopped Friday, got set up. Good shooting on Saturday. Worked on grip for pistol- modest change, solid upgrade in stability.
Breathing control and front sight focus with the Hi-Wall 45-70 from a sitting position. Did not get a chance to run some BP reloads but did get a trifle of a shoulder bruise.
Great campfire cooking with desserts by my lovely wife, some good bourbon.
Very hasty pack and escape this morning. Tent leaked and a steady rain.

I've heard people complain that most military firearms (M-16, M-4, M9, 1911, etc.) have triggers that are way too heavy for their taste at the range. I tell them that Private Snuffy isn't (most of the time) a trained marksman and that lighter triggers will result in more negligent discharges in the field. Most people don't understand the abuse most military issued weapons take in their service lives.

Takes a lot of ammo shooting to get to that level of proficiency. The three burst, at least in the AR, was from some less than impressive ballistic theory that it would maximize the dispersion around the center of POA to make sure to hit a critical part with at least one of the bullets and also to minimize ammo wastage by troops on full auto. The latter was viewed as more important than the former. In practice for the AR, it was junked because of the need to master three different trigger pulls. Semi auto, burst with one or two rounds fired, and then the pull with the remaining round.

Dunno if we got the three shot burst mode idea from the Germans or if we invented that botched idea for ourselves.

People spend a lot of time blaming trigger weights rather than doing Weasel's fundamentals on trigger control. Smooth triggers are more important to me than trigger weight (until you get to some grossly overweight triggers in the teens or so). Then again, I learned to shoot double action on revolvers including snubbies. Want to shoot long guns well, then learn to shoot revolvers accurately double action. All triggers seem really light after that.

Best results were after doing a little dry firing to re-wire the brain's mechanics.

The place was packed. Lots of people making the trip the range. Poor weather, so maybe indoor activity was the ticket but still a data point.

51 There are no less than five biathlon clubs in Alaska. People up do ski, and they do shoot, and sometimes they do both. We used to ski in elementary school for recess and gym. I don't they do that anymore, but for a while there, everybody skied. Kikkan Randal is the niece of my sister's best friend (got that? okay then), my sister and her best friend learned to ski in elementary school. Wood skis, pine tar, leather boots and bindings, all that old school jazz.

We also have a world-class skiing venue just off the airport in Anchorage. Lots of great training.

I wonder, though, why Alaskans do so poorly internationally.

I do think the Army should have biathlon teams, and develop them like Navy Seals or something. The sport grew out of WWII stuff in Norway and Finland. Seems like it would be a good fit for special teams of some kind.

55 And,
EdL,

Armed forces, with a few elite exceptions or the US Marines, views firearms training as something that troops just need to be good enough rather than actually trying to improve marksmanship in combat situations. And MTU units, in the past, dunno about now, often didn't help matters because they focus too much on accuracy and not enough on speed. In bad situations, troops have to satisfy both criteria.

To a military with whiz bangs, etc., they often deprecate small arms and crucial realistic training. The training comes back in a hurry when the whizzbangs aren't able to resolve a situation and then just as abruptly gets put on the shelf again after the latest unpleasantness fades away.

56 On another note, we had a local range host a large PRS match. 120 shooters from all over the country signed up.

Being as I'm friends with the owners of the range, I was able to wander out and takes some pics, though, they're not all that good.

Figure 120 shooters, not a single rifle less than $5K, most with backup rifles as well.

The match director pulled in some great sponsors, too. Berger, Vortex and Hodgdon being three I can remember off the top of my head. Two days, 16 stages, targets out to 1,000 yards.

Shooters were complaining about the cold and wind in the AM but by mid-day things had calmed down to about an 8mph wind and it was warm and sunny. Typical high desert.

Posted by: whig at February 22, 2026 07:30 PM (E4rtv)

I think three round burst was one of the things we came up with after Vietnam. In ROTC, I got yelled at by the detachment Sergeant Major for firing my M-16 on an FTX in full auto. He said that the M-16 would overheat very quickly on "rock and roll" (we had borrowed National Guard M-16A1s in the mid 1980s) and overheating the rifle would result in blowing the gas tube. I didn't want to be "That Guy" that got the Sergeant Major P.O.'d. IIRC, Eugene Stoner didn't like burst mode either because training was a better fix for the problem than re-engineering his rifle. The M4A1s in service today now have the auto setting restored, replacing burst mode on earlier M4s. That was in the early 2010s.

61 I do think the Army should have biathlon teams, and develop them like Navy Seals or something. The sport grew out of WWII stuff in Norway and Finland. Seems like it would be a good fit for special teams of some kind.

I'm pretty sure they used to. Mostly manned from "mountain" divisions. At the same time they had the cavalry events in which Patton participated. Back when military and sports went hand-in-glove. (But I could be wrong about an Army biathlon team.)

100 Howdy. We have a biathlon (summer) team that meets and practices for the events in the Mid-Atlantic area. The summer biathlon that we run is usually a 5km run with shooting stages every 1km. There have been events in PA over the years, but now there is only one in Camp Freedom (Carbondale) at the end of May and ours on the Potomac (bring your own filtration device) in August.

We encourage newcomers and love to practice. Our season is from March 28 to the beginning of hunting season and we practice at the Izaak Walton League in Poolesville, MD every second SAT during the season. 40gr LR in bolt action, no optics, trail or road running. You will love it.

Never shot? We can teach you. Don't like running? Neither do I, but I'll run with you. Love FUNdamentals? We do to and are always trying to discover new ways to remind us of that fact.

I started doing this back in Texas in 2010 with the biathlons down in Waco and then up in OK at Thunderbird. Those were heavy duty: centerfire ARs and humping a LOT of ammo over 6 miles. This Eastern version is closer to the Olympic ideal and actually dang good. Email me at md_biathlon at protonmail dot com.

Weasel's emphasis on trigger fundamentals cannot be reemphasized enough.

Very light triggers can also be a safety issue if not labeled or known to possible second shooters of the firearm. Bad enough in something like a rimfire, much worse in a centerfire for an Unintentional Discharge by a shooter new to the firearm that does not truly know how a particular very light trigger can fire so easily.

Some of the Walker trigger lawsuits were caused in part because people got to messing around with them to make them even lighter and then carried them into the field that way with loaded hunting rifles. The Walker trigger or most other sporting rifles, as opposed to drop safe battle designs like Mausers, Enfields, or Springfields, only have safeties that block trigger movement, not the sear.

NCOs are a crucial advantage to US forces.
FWIW,
I learned on A1s and actually prefer it to an A-2 as it is much easier to sight in with a few shots than the more complex A-2 iron sights.

By the time I left Uncle Sam's service, we had switched to the A-2. Still prefer the longer 20 inch barrel with the rifle length gas system in the AR. The M4s were a CQB kludge come up with by Colt to keep manufacturing ARs for a time.

127 119 Whig, I have a B&T SPR 300 Pro rifle. That thing has a 3.5 pound trigger from the factory. To me, it feels like if I breathe on it wrong, it'll go off. That's about as light as I want to get on a field rifle.
Posted by: Ed L
----
I agree that is about the lowest safe trigger weight on a field rifle. I generally aim at 4.5 lbs or higher on a single stage semi auto setup for social purposes or use two stage triggers on a couple.

Then again, I rarely fire my double action revolvers in single action--it can become a crutch just like I spent enough time with a snubbie to trigger cock the thing. That being said, it is almost always better in the long run to simplify to one trigger pull. Double action.

I really only still have ARs and variants and shotties as single stage triggers as all of my old milsurps are two stages with a few shotguns that way.

Were getting hammered now and have about 15 or so more hours to go.

The last prediction I read was 10-14". A "cyclone blizzard." That's a new one on me. I've been in a blizzard before, with thunder and lightning, but not coupled with cyclone winds. That prediction is gusts upwards of 60 m.p.h.

There's going to be some hellacious snow drifts.

133 I have been working on my storage issue. At this point I have - (under my breath) - too many guns. Because you know, if I have one, I have to have two.

So, anyway, been working on converting a closet to a gub room. I suppose I will need extra room for a dehumidifier if I pull the gubs out of the creek. But that is for another day.

I have decided on slatwall or pegboard for a portion of the laager - mostly the few unique items. Those are the ones that probably look the coolest as wall hangers, anyway. But I have also determined that a significant portion of the storage problem is related to accessories of one type or other.

Case in point (pun intended) - I have a soft rifle case for each of the rifles. That seems unnecessary. If I cam packing up the whole kit and kaboodle all at once they are probably getting thrown in the truck without cases. And I have soft cases for nearly every pistol. Same deal. They take up a lot of space just sitting there.

Posted by: Scuba_Dude at February 22, 2026 08:26 PM (NGwt8)

136 Some of the Walker trigger lawsuits were caused in part because people got to messing around with them to make them even lighter and then carried them into the field that way with loaded hunting rifles. The Walker trigger or most other sporting rifles, as opposed to drop safe battle designs like Mausers, Enfields, or Springfields, only have safeties that block trigger movement, not the sear.
Posted by: whig at February 22, 2026 08:08 PM (E4rtv)

I suspect that some of the Walker trigger woes were caused by old oil inside the enclosed assembly gumming up and solidifying. My standard practice when an old Remington 700 series comes my way is to solvent flush the heck out the trigger assembly. There is sometimes an amazing improvement in the trigger pull. The Model 721 was introduced in 1948, so a fellow could be dealing with 77 year-old gum and varnish inside that semi-sealed box.

My platoon sergeant said that the M-16A1s we had were too long for the cabs of the trucks we had. He would have preferred to have had the XM-177/CAR-15 carbine instead. I didn't understand why he liked the XM177/CAR-15 so much (he got use one for a bit in Nam) until I picked up a reproduction a few years ago. 152 For those wondering what the heck is going on with Virginia gun laws, I have done a lot of research and this is up to the minute:

The big bad bills - assault weapons ban and mag restrictions - are stuck in committee. (House sent theirs to the Senate where it is in committee with no action. Senate sent theirs to the House where it is in committee with no action.) Just about everything else has met the same fate - passed the house it originated in and is in committee in the other. 11% tax, CCW reciprocity cancellation, plastic gun/80% ban, stuck in committee. Passed and headed to the governor for signature - red flag laws, gun free zones in mental health and medical facilities, and also in state facilities.

To be continued....

The flakes are much smaller now than earlier, but the "intervals" where no snow was predicted to fall have passed, and yes, you guessed it, it snow thru each one. 157 I understand that M-16A2 was truly a "camel" - i.e. a horse designed by committee. The complex rear sight was the brainchild of the USMC, who wanted a rifle that would perform better at the 500 meter qualification range the USMC still uses to this day and National Match service rifle competitions. The Army wanted the new handguard design (derived from the CAR-15/XM177) and three round burst setting based on its Vietnam experience with the M-16A1. Eugene Stoner wasn't happy with the "improvements" that created the M-16A2, but the Army and USMC won out in the end.

========
True but from my personal experience, shorter barrel lengths such as the M4geries for 223's aka 5.56 cause a more unpleasant recoil sensation, harder on bolt lugs, and more cycling issues with suboptimal ammo. Switch that to a Grendel, 6.8 Spec, or even a 7.62x39, in a shorter than 16 inch barrel, not much of a problem other than enhanced recoil.

Rifle length gas system in the AR smooths that out for a 5.56/223. The 223's predecessor was after all a varminting cartridge the vaunted triple deuce aka 222.

Varminting cartridges prefer long barrels to throw light weight projectives at very high speeds.

188 168 Ed L., my AR 10 absolutely hates 150 grain ammo by any manufacturer. Much prefers 168, 175.
But I have a bunch of American Eagle in other calibers.
Posted by: RI Red

Typically the 150's or even lower are simply plinking ammo (or bullets) for the 7.62x51 or even the 30-06. Often flat based bullets, inferior quality in jackets and slugs, etc. You see the same results in WWI and WWII GI ammo--the heavier bullet--M1 Ball or even the M2 Armor Piercing aka black tip often outshot the lighter 150 M2 Ball.

194 New Mexico SB-17, the latest attempt to nullify the 2nd amendment, failed to get out of a House committee thus killing the the latest Santa Fe Communists' wet dream.

This bill would have banned semi-automatic firearms statewide, would have left small police forces without armed officers officers when they are required required to purchase their own semi-Automatic firearms, and required FLLs to harden their buildings like Fort Knox, keep 24x7x365 video records for 2 years, and to report all sales to the New Mexico state government effectively creating a state gun registry. The new FFL requirements most likely would have driven many small dealers out of business, especially the ones run out of their home, because the invasive video taping make no exception for eome-based businesses.

The state senator who sponsored this bill has vowed to bring it up again at the next legislative session cuz she "feels" It is her calling to get guns banned. Meanwhile, the Democrat super majority keeps enacting laws, enforced with help from activist judges, that keep kicking loose criminals with multiple firearms felonies.

I've got a B&T BWC-9 that takes the FCU from a Sig P320. The BWC-9 comes with an Aimpoint Acro, so that checks your red dot box. Unfolded, the BWC-9 does have a full stock. It does not have a forward grip, though. It shoots acceptably well at 20 yards (2" - 3" groups offhand). Two big downsides, though. The FCU has to go on a Form 1 as an SBR (i.e. it's an NFA item). The BWC-9 chassis is expensive (B&T is Swiss - when do the Swiss make anything for cheap?). But chassis itself can be purchased like an accessory because it's NOT a firearm; the FCU is.

Late tho.
Quick gun update, for posterity.

So I bought a Kel-Tec P-3AT (.380) for $150 as soon as I saw the new Kel-Tec PR-3AT. No, I didn't need it. I have a G42 and other .380's but...well, I did it and I am learning things.

Like the recoil is not bad, the gun is cheap but simple and shockingly accurate despite being in possession of the worst sights I've ever seen on a pistol.

However, the pistol is getting constant failure to eject. So I'm gonna have to send it in for service. Probably, but not certainly, needs a new extractor.
