My reactions this morning watching ski mountaineering for the first time...
"OK, more cross-country. Whatever." "Wait, they're stopping and pulling something off their skis? OK, they're going downhill now. Cool. That's better." "Hold on. Now they're putting the thingies back on their skis and waddling uphill through some railings. WTF am I watching?" "Thingies off again. More downhill. Cool." "STAIRS?!? They're taking their skis off and WALKING UP A FLIGHT OF STAIRS?!?" At this point I expect them to stop and ice fish for a while. Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at February 21, 2026 07:52 AM (5YmYl) 11

"The Trash Masher from the 1970's with Marshall Efron.
2,000 pounds of pressure. Marshall can dig it! Anyone ever had one?" We did in Cali in the 70s. They had a little replaceable aerosol can in them that would give a little spritz of air freshener into the bag every time you opened the drawer. It didn't help, after 5 days or so it really began to reek so you had to take it out even if it was half full. My opinion on trash is that it is our gift to future generations. All they have to do is figure out how to extract all the valuable materials from the landfill goldmines that we will leave them. Posted by: fd at February 21, 2026 08:05 AM (vFG9F) 20

Salt moderates the dough rise. You might want to go “low salt”, but your bread doesn’t. James Beard popularized bread making in the 70s. I think he called for a tablespoon of salt in his dough recipes. Now that is a bit much.
Berserker I saw on the ONT wants to try a stand mixer to make dough. They work great, don’t overdo it. There is such a thing as overworking the dough. I didn’t know this at first. Wiki tells me the invention of modern sandboarding is attributed to Lon Beale, aka 'Doctor Dune', who began sandboarding in 1972 in California's Mojave Desert.
With all due respect to 'Doctor Dune, my friends and I started sandboarding (we called it sand-surfing) on the dunes of Lake Michigan in 1970. Some of us used the Snurfer, which was the original snowboard invented by Sherman Poppen of Muskegon, Michigan, while others built our own sandboards in our family garages and, later on, in middle school woodshop class. Posted by: Common Tater at February 21, 2026 08:17 AM (wKLSC) When I was young in the 60’s, growing up in Phoenix, my dad had an early Toyota Land Cruiser, and he would take my brother and I out on weekends looking for old Papago Indian ruins out in the desert and mountain valleys. There were maps around on photo copy, there were a lot and governments hadn’t gotten around to putting any signs or restrictions on them yet. So we’d go looking for pottery shards, mostly, and he’d make some art out of them. Best place to look was to find the midden, or garbage dump near the ruined Pueblo. It would be a raised area of dirt about 50 yards from the entrance, and if you took a shovel to it, you could find a basketful of broken pottery in quite a short time. I know this sounds illegal now, but at the time nobody cared about them. Most of it was quite intricately colored. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 21, 2026 08:38 AM (46za5) 66

Dad is out of the PT wing and back home. The community is making some changes to the house such as putting risers on the couches and a seat for the toilet and the shower. Mom is still working with the VA to get his disability rating bumped up to 100%. This is one of the few times we're grateful that dad never threw away any paperwork because mom is going to bury the VA with his service records. And some on the right are noticing what she said-- not the euphemistic phony palpable weasel language she used to dress up her true intentions: the real intent "we mean capture and kill conservatives if we win" And the left base is like, she didn't say that, she just wants the rule of law restored. All the crime and corruption under Trump brought to justice. Yes, and if you read the constitution of any communist country, even NK, all guatentee the people far more "rights" than the US. 6-1/2 c flour
1.5Tablespoons yeast 1.5 Tablespoons kosher salt 3c water, 100 degrees Mix by hand until ingredients mixed, loosely, don't over work. Rise 2-5 hours. Form into a ball, score top. Bake 450 degrees in a Dutch oven 30 minutes, take lid off, 5 more minutes to brown top. You can store dough in frig for a couple days, you can divide dough into three smaller balls, 1 small ball is perfect for two people for a soup dinner. Voila. Except for the Dutch oven and power used for oven, what's that? 2 bucks for ingredients? Dutch ovens can be pricey...think enameled from cuisinart. They don’t know how to live a little because they see the darkness in society everywhere. I think there is a strong inverse relationship between the degree of cultural exhibitionism and personal sociability, being forward and bold, extroversion. I’m a timid introvert and even I see this. The Emmaus area of PA had a hundred jasper pits that were mined by Indians for thousands of years, for points, knives, scrapers, etc. They were traded with other tribes from ME to FL.
Many of the pits were bulldozed and are under and around the PA Turnpike. Not many folks cared about artifacts back then. Jasper can be sharp enough to shave with. Or, cut throats with. Posted by: Jasper Park Emmaus at February 21, 2026 08:46 AM (oftw2) 87

100 And if you didn't notice this week, Schumer laid out the endgame for the Epstein Files operation:
A federal law that removes any statute of limitations for sex crimes.* Or the "Every Conservative is a Rapist" law.** From a purely legal POV, for the record, the reason this is a horrible idea is that “sex crimes” have by the highest rate of false convictions of any crime; because they frequently have no corroborating witnesses. And what’s even worse is that the prime reason for Statutes of Limitations is that after enough time has passed, it is frequently impossible for the accused to mount a credible defense. One of the big reasons American law has them is that this was a method often used by the British crown to eliminate critics they couldn’t get rid of any other way, usually accusing them of seditious acts 30 years or more in the past. The Dems are beginning to understand that they will soon be politically impotent. A rump party based in crumbling states on the wrong side of every issue. Oddly, Fetterman gets this. The rest are incapable of making a course correction, and this is a fascinating study in how political game theory doesn't always work.
Threats are a sign of weakness. "When I get power, I'm gonna crush you!" is the weakest possible thing to say, especially after Biden's persecutions. It's like the old "kill all prisoners" notion, that basically means your enemies know they must fight to the death. Stupid. Oh, and when they have power, they will show no mercy. Franco figured it out. Offer decent, honorable turns and not only will your enemies surrender, they will even change sides. The Dems are basically threatening the normies, who have no other option than to throw in with Trump. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. We got a brochure in the mail a couple weeks ago about a new subdivision that was being built. You start off by picking the house style; there are about 3 or 4 different layouts with different facades. All are 3-4 bedroom, 2 bath designs. You then pick the wall paint, type and color carpeting, appliances, fixtures, etc. and any features like skylights, mood lighting, and so on from a catalog or at their "model home".

I will say that our bishop is a sensible guy, and this is probably why the diocese is growing. This Easter will see 50+ people enter the Church, some being baptized, others completing confirmation. I can't remember ever having that many people come in at once.
The students are the primary source of growth. Huge uptick in Mass attendance at the campus location. I've gone to the noon Mass due to the Book Thread and it is packed. They also do candlelight Masses on Sunday evening that are capacity crowds, the vast majority being students. I've never seen it like this before. When our family entered the Church we were the only people in our parish going through RCIA. The number of seminarians back then was 1/3 of what it is now. The Holy Spirit is very much present. I think it was popular because everyone was on drugs, and Rock was going through a phase where it got pretentious and Serious, no longer being just youthful rebellion. So you get tempo changes, movements, orchestras and stuff. If you go on Youtube and read the comments on the tune, people find his delivery very sincere and I guess if you're overwrought and worked up, it speaks to you. I like Donna Summer's cover because it is funny, and highlights the silliness of the thing. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at February 21, 2026 09:29 AM (ZOv7s) 190

People getting lost in revenge fantasies become the mirror image of our enemies, who serve the great Enemy. That mode of though inevitably leads to black pilling and despair. Too much of that going on. God delivered us from almost certain persecution and for that we should be grateful and continue to press on. A regular cast iron dutch oven, not enameled, works great for bread baking. I use a 3.5 quart one from Lodge that is great and will last for generations. They make a cast iron combo cooker: a 3.2 quart dutch oven with a 10 inch skillet that serves as a separate pan and a lid for the dutch oven. Usually costs around 50 bucks. Heavy but essentially immortal.

This is often not the case, and that's how you get tyrannies, but that is extremely unlikely in a nation with more firearms than people. If the law is unjust, there will be a reaction. It will also not be possible to create the same conformity, so there will be just jurisdictions which will push against unjust ones, as we are seeing now. Something to consider: China has a much larger Total Force than we do, and even though it has longer (and often more hostile) borders, that establishment is deployed in regional garrisons to support the regime. The US military is deployed in training locations that once may have been garrisons, but at this point, most of the active bases are far from civilization so that they can conduct more realistic exercises.
The US has a single geographic command to cover the nation; China has five. In addition to its active duty element and armed national police, China has several million militia (actual numbers are vague) that can be given clubs and riot helmets, and also plain-clothes 'enforcers' who also augment local police. And yet for all of that, it teeters in the brink of rebellion. In fact that are lots of riots and uprisings that never make the news here. It is seething with discontent. The point is that if China, which has had decades to perfect thought control and build the perfect security state, is now wobbling, how can the US establishment hope to maintain power in the face of popular discontent? What they fail to understand is that justice can exist outside of the law. When the law and justice are in opposition, the law is often forced to yield.
It takes a lot of energy to sustain tyranny, the left is losing theirs rapidly. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd Law in general should be viewed as a dispute resolution mechanism by setting the rules of the game. In a world absent of law, endless disputes will almost always have to be resolved by trial of force. Where leftists have a problem is that they want it both ways, laws when they can obtain them to oppress their foes in a society and no law being enforced against them. And this attitude has spread nationwide among the left. So urban areas devolved into trials of force for their pets and yet law abiders are subject to draconian enforcement. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 21, 2026 10:28 AM (46za5) --- That was how the Warlord Era started - the monarchy was overthrown, replaced by a Republic, but when the general who ruled it died, the regional commanders set up their own mini-states. Posted by: whig at February 21, 2026 10:30 AM (E4rtv) --- As we saw in Spain. I think the level of voter fraud is much bigger than anyone thinks. Blue jurisdictions used to course correct and I think that the system has been successfully rigged for that to be impossible to stop within the states because of that capture. The danger of civil war was greatest when the Dems controlled the White House and therefore the military, which was staffed with yes-men at its highest levels. What I most feared was a clash between national and state forces because that would create a situation of divided loyalties and intense combat for control of bases and installations. Very much Spain. I think people downplaying the importance of what the judiciary is doing are missing the point. It's fine. Everyone's entitled to an opinion.
I think the situation was a so-called "constitutional crisis" when the first few judges overstepped their authorities. In some cases more than once or twice. And some refused to reconsider. Just to expand on my thoughts - the left is still capable of creating mayhem and violence, but the core problem they have is that the escalation ladder they are climbing is ultimately self-defeating. If they succeed in creating an actual insurrection, Trump will be fully justified in the popular mind in putting it down.
I think a core issue is that leftists are so colossally ignorant of history. They actually think Kent State hurt Nixon. They are assured by their lefty professors and protest songs that it did. But it didn't. The Days of Rage backfired in a huge way, and ushered in 20 years of Republican presidents, with the Carter interregnum being an embarrassing blip. The Dems need a full cessation of deportation, and that's not going to happen. They aren't moving the needle, but are creating criminal conspiracies that can and will be pursued. For those screaming "WHEN?!" I will point to the election calendar. The time for indictments is after the ballots have been finalized. Trump has shown a super-human degree of patience in letting all this play out. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at February 21, 2026 10:46 AM (ZOv7s) 392

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at February 21, 2026 09:54 AM (ZOv7s) This infuriates me because Trump and his agenda is about as conservative as Jack Kennedy. The Dems may try to create a Summer of Love 2.0, but that's got two major problems. The first is that Trump has already documented the networks, which are quietly being mapped and rolled up. Moving into Minnesota during a deep freeze wrecked the left's force generation model, so the only people getting picked up were cadre, not expendable volunteers.
There is also the 250th celebration, and rioting while the rest of America wants to kick back and party is about the dumbest thing one can do. People will rightly want those goons locked up, and they will be. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at February 21, 2026 10:48 AM (ZOv7s) 398

Roberts, and Barrett can spare us the pretense that they are somehow looking out for the "separation of powers". Barrett would refused to hear valid cases challenging Covid restrictions of citizens' constitutional rights, and Roberts...well we know who he is and what he has done to the separation of powers during the dark obama era. Good thing is that the tariffs are not going away and have now increased. And they would not be able to do anything about it, no matter how many lawsuits the Chicoms, through third parties, file all over the place.

The core of the Roberts decision turned on regulate. Then the whole decision fell apart.
The question is whether regulate coupled with powers over importation of goods under the IEEPA included tariffs. Roberts and five other justices said it couldn't claiming a major questions doctrine. Roberts cites "IEEPA authorizes the President to ‘investigate, block during the pendency of an investigation, regulate, direct and compel, nullify, prevent or prohibit . . . importation or exportation." Yet curiously this almost absolute control recognized by the majority is used to then block tariffs because the statute does not specifically mention tariffs. These are a form of regulation as much as taxation btw as a means to address an economic emergency. Gorsuch shows his idiosyncratic hypertextualism theory that ignores common understanding of laws so he can invent transexuals covered by the Civil Rights Act but not tariffs as a means of affecting importation of goods from other countries while allowing all other forms of blocking or limiting them. His undignified assault on the three dissenters was also indicative of his screwball idiosyncratic tangents on statutory law. Posted by: whig at February 21, 2026 11:05 AM (E4rtv) 433
