Wiki-
The Ameya," also known as "The Candy Blower," is a painting by American artist Robert Frederick Blum, created around 1893. This oil on canvas artwork captures a scene of a Japanese candy maker, or ameya, engaged in the traditional craft of Amezaiku, which involves shaping candy in a manner similar to glassblowing. The Ameya, 1893
Robert Frederick Blum Marvelously detailed, looks like a photograph. --- On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 768 Blum went to Japan in 1890 to produce illustrations for a series of articles for Scribner’s Magazine, spending eighteen months there. His illustrated accounts of his experiences were published in 1893 and included an image titled The Ameya, on which he based this painting. Blum wrote of another depiction of an ameya, or candy blower: "Very interesting things they do certainly perform . . . using the candy like a glassblower his lump of molten glass, and producing results, if hardly as beautiful or durable, certainly as artistic and finished as regards workmanship." I'd hang today's art selection. Thanks! Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at February 27, 2026 09:42 AM (NFX2v) 49

Although a painting of a Japanese street scene is not something I would hang, the artistry in this is excellent and really caught my eye. Blum captured the feel of movement on the street as background while the attention of the women and girls is focussed on the street vendor. A still moment in a busy day. The bright colors of the vendor, slightly off center, is the focal point for the women and the viewers. The strong details and colors of the figures seem to pop out against the looser details of the buildings in the background with those brown earth tones. The skin tones catch my attention as they are darker than is often seen these days. And each face is individual, not generic, bound by the same skin tones.
The entire work is effective and I makes me want to spend time looking at it. Posted by: JTB at February 27, 2026 09:59 AM (yTvNw) 112

Blown sugar globes, never knew that was a thing. Interesting. Has anyone had freeze-dried candy? That was a big thing a few years ago. They'd take skittles or other similar types of candy and put them through a freeze-drying process. Doesn't really change the taste, just makes it puffy, brittle, and crackly. People were buying online shops where they resell candy in freeze-dried form for a hefty markup. A fad.

>>Is the point of a painting only to make you feel warm? I don't see a phot realistic painting from 500 years ago like that. A little disappointed to see that it wasn't a Chinese artist who painted this. I've always been curious as to why there doesn't seem to be a famous realist/humanist Asian painter. Their art all seems to be very formulaic and gimmicky or rote. There's no Hudson River School of Beijing or Kyoto.
So I was really hoping that this one would be the first. But nah... just some guy named Bob. Posted by: red speck at February 27, 2026 *** I knew a Chinese artist who specialized in realism! He was a graduate student in studio art at my former employer back in the '90s. He was so good he even had a show at a gallery in town his second year in the grad program. Big paintings too -- Chinese subjects, but Western style. When he painted a Budweiser can, you felt as if you could reach out and pop the top. Unfortunately I can't remember his name, or I'd look to see if he had a subsequent career here. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 27, 2026 10:06 AM (wzUl9) 136

Sure, there is tremendous technical skill required to render something to a realistic/photo-realistic level, but it leaves nothing to the imagination
——- Yes, but keep in mind the advent of photography itself didn’t start till the 19th century. Paintings with a high res photograph appearance in previous centuries must have been absolutely amazing at the time. They used glass lenses to achieve this iirc. Pretty clever. They had cameras, sort of. They didn’t have film, it was up to the artist to make the emulsion basically. I am catastrophically bad at determining Japanese gender. Anime and manga? I need a guide that tales me which one is the boy and which is a girl. Anime, generally the same. And that extends to other asians, korean boy bands, or girl bands, I honestly don't know. They all kind of look feminine to me. The same hair, the same baggy dress. Small chests. And I firmly admit it's a me problem. I'm basically a neanderthal and would have to do some grabbin' like that poor dude in 84s Iceman movie. "Here, stand still, I just need to firmly grasp your crotch for just the briefest moment". It would help if they carried big placards or something. Apparently the brouhaha is because the Taliban has been training and sending ISIS lunatics across the border to kill Pakis. Pakistan, contrary to all expectations, does not care for this. Afghanistan has historically never recognized the 1893 British-drawn Durand Line as the official international border, causing persistent friction.
The 1893 Durand Line, a ~1,500-mile colonial border dividing Pashtun tribes between Afghanistan and Pakistan, remains a major source of tension. Successive Afghan governments have historically rejected the line as an official border, creating persistent diplomatic and military friction, especially following Pakistan's independence in 1947. "I knew a Chinese artist who specialized in realism!
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 27, 2026 10:06 AM (wzUl9)" There is no market for realism in fine art in the west, which is why schools don't train it here anymore. It's all faggy navel gazing and postmodern slop. But if you need it, say for production art (concept, vfx, etc), China - or more accurately Chinese artists - is where to get it. They learn in the old school way.
