"General Motors - which is already an industrial giant – is staffing its senior executive offices with new hires whose corporate experience is at money-losing start-ups selling niche products. GM cannot succeed by employing a start-up strategy, but it certainly can fail. Inexplicably that is the direction General Motors’ executives and board have chosen to proceed."

My GM cars have all been pretty good: two Oldsmobile Cutlass coupes and three Buicks sedans, including the current one. Every one of them delivered a good driving experience with very little repair needed beyond the usual maintenance and wear items.
It's a shame to see how they have gone all-SUV, Buick anyway, and are deliberately pounding their heads against a stone wall. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 20, 2026 11:06 AM (wzUl9) 20
I've avoided GM ever since they shafted bond holders as part of the bail out from Obama. New Fords trucks are aluminum beds that won't stand up hard use. I'm hoping to keep my 23 year old 350 going until I stop needing a truck, it is pre DEF as well. I am blessed to have good independent diesel mechanics to work on it when it needs work.

GM’s Board of Directors should have brought in (or promoted) industry veterans who understand what GM’s customers want to buy and what its dealers can sell.
Well, the industry veterans haven't exactly covered themselves in glory for the last 60-odd years. Could the new guys do worse? Trump needs to say explicity; "There will be no more bailouts. Regarding matters automotive, the Antifa vigilantes in Minneapolis are very proud that they have put together a database of vehicles used by ICE.
The slight problem with this cunning plan is that a lot of these cars are rentals, which have been returned to the rent-a-car companies, and unsuspecting tourists and businessmen who rent these cars find themselves forced to stop by mobs blocking their cars and interrogated. This will doubtless have wonderful effects on the already wounded Minneapolis economy. Posted by: The ARC of History! at February 20, 2026 11:10 AM (n1OCj) 36

GM has a market cap of $80B. Tesla has a market cap of $1.7T. It's not automatically a bad idea for GM to seek people from the tech/EV industry in order to make a path forward. Not defending the individual choices those don't seem good.
GM has its own history of pissing money away so looking for people from a different background doing it is pretty on brand. Posted by: blaster at February 20, 2026 11:12 AM (NlEaG) 43

But the interesting thing...government spending was down almost 1%. It dragged the overall number down from almost 2.3%. The only way I'd want to buy a newish pickup now if if DEF gets the boot and a non UWA company sells a heavy diesel pickup. People tell me todays gas engines have more power, so probably don't need a diesel for towing but I'd need to hear it from multiple people that had towed a lot with one. The c-suite game is definitely interesting, and I personally would love to peek under the tent to find out what their recruiting strategy was and who they included in their interviews. Will Stancil:
There are hundreds and hundreds of rental cars in MN now that are essentially cursed, entered into directories of ICE vehicles, and if you have the misfortune of getting one, you could be watched with suspicion, followed, whistled at. That's what the rental agency gets for helping paramilitaries! Common now as ICE draws down in MN: observers pursue some known ICE vehicle for miles, only to discover it had been returned to the rental agency and re-rented to some poor tourist. We clear the vehicle, but we tell them: complain to the agency they're blacklisting their cars by renting to ICE --- But it also means the folks left over are the diehards, veritable combat veterans from the siege, who are, at this point, usually pros at this. People with incredible instincts for spotting ICE, who will do combat driving to keep up, who will walk up to a car full of agents and knock on the window. Imagine being a tourist being "pursued for miles" by "veritable combat veterans" who are engaged in "combat driving". State and local governments will do nothing about this, of course, since they are on Antifa's side. Posted by: The ARC of History! at February 20, 2026 11:17 AM (n1OCj) 68

"Lucid Motors sells a low-volume, specialty product, specifically luxury EVs. The starting price for a Lucid is about $80,000, with sales of about 15,000 units per year. By contrast, GM sells about 3 million vehicles per year."
So in other words, GM probably turns out more defective 6.2L V8's in a month than Lucid sells cars in a year. Maybe GM should focus on fixing their fucking engines (also including the oil pickup design flaw on the Duramax) instead of hiring EV Karens. And Stellantis, for that matter, who is a decade+ into having Pentastars and Hemis clatter themselves apart because they keep using chinesium cam followers and shitty induction hardened cast camshafts. Though they may have figured it wasn't worth the hassle assuming they were planning to ditch both for the new I6 before their CEO got the boot. In other news related to this and Trump's EPA/CARB/CAFE housecleaning, it's becoming VERY obvious that the super thin motor oil thing automakers jumped on for MPG gains was as much of a mistake as anyone with common sense said it was going to be. Levin notes, under what he's read, they grant Trump the right to ban the import under the emergency power but not to impose even a penny in tariffs. So, basically, Trump will go back to anyone who wants a refund and say, "I'm retroactively banning your product. Or we can deem you paid the import penalty equal to the tariff previously paid." Lots of folks have predicted that Trump will have to redo tariffs with a different mechanism cuz he used emergency powers act or something and the SCOTUS might consider that too much of a stretch. And the admin has now had plenty of time to figure out other ways to impose tarrifs.
The FNM is still strong, I am okay with SCOTUS saying there are limits on presidential power since we might get another Demonrat in the whitehouse. Posted by: PaleRider at February 20, 2026 11:31 AM (vlkz/) 128
121 LOL! That would be great, but I haven't read the ruling- is that an option?
Posted by: LASue at February 20, 2026 11:28 AM (mFhj ====== The admin used the IEEPA as its justification for tariffs from the start. It's probably because it gave them freedom to impose tariffs as high as possible and as fast as possible. The Tariff Act of 1930, Section 338, caps tariff rates at 50%. The vast majority of existing tariffs from Liberation Day are under 50%, and I think the ruling was really only directed at the 20% recipricol tariff against the whole world. So, he signs an EO outlining who gets what tariff under 50% under the Section 338 authority. For the stuff above 50% (China, mostly), he just makes it goods based rather than country based and gets those done as well. Seriously, considering the structure of tariff authority in the US, this is a flash in the pan that will be seen as a nothing burger in no more than a month. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK) at February 20, 2026 11:25 AM (QGaXH)" The electrically heated emissions stuff Cummins is working on might be a game-changer, especially if it cuts out a bunch of EGR nonsense. I have a gasser myself, but the main issue between the current diesel vs gas setups (at least for GM and Ram) is up front cost/maintenance hassle for the diesel, vs high rate of lemons in the gas V8's. Tow mode in the newer trucks, especially the Rams, makes up for the lack of diesel engine braking somewhat. The diesels can last a lot longer but you run the risk of the DPF system shitting the bed, which is 10-15k, on top of the extra 7-12k cost of the engine itself. The other thing is that she's all-in on "green energy" and thinks that ChyNah's lead in manufacturing green energy components makes them a superpower and the Wave Of The Future. She never considers the truth, that China just sees green energy as another market for their shitty industrial goods, built in factories powered almost exclusively by the dirtiest coal-fired power stations. It's pretty clear in the language. But, presidents have been given about half a dozen major authorities to impose tariffs from Congress for a century. The IEEPA is just one of the newer ones (passed in the 70s). Congress really didn't want to vote on tariffs long before they became completely useless instead of just being mostly useless. Gee, why are WaPo reporters out of work?
Taking things particularly hard has been sportswriter Sally Jenkins, publishing a piece called “You Can’t Kill Swagger” in The Atlantic. “The Post Sports section is, was, no ordinary section, in heritage or in coverage,” Jenkins wrote. “It was habitually young, because it required hiring people with no sense of off-the-clockness. … The Post’s sportswriters were trained “...to regard sportswriting as merely another portal through which to report on the broadest subjects: labor issues, performance enhancement, domestic violence, racism, sexism, terrorism, global corruptions such as vote-buying in the Olympics.” Jenkins then went over Jeff Bezos and Matt Murray, the owner and editor of the Post: “Usually, when people in an office distrust feckless leaders, ...they will subtly gear down their efforts,” Jenkins writes. “But my former colleagues do the opposite. For every half-wit decision by a poseur in a 42-long, slim-fit suit, they report even harder. https://is.gd/XocSRA Posted by: Archimedes at February 20, 2026 11:41 AM (Riz8t) 167

More on the tariff ruling.
Any country that agreed to specific tariffs are not affected by this ruling. It's really only about the worldwide 20% reciprocal tariff. So, Country A got hit with the tariff, entered negotiations, and came out with a bilateral agreement for 15% or whatever? The period they were under 20% is refundable. Everything since? Not touched by this ruling because the individual tariff agreements weren't done under the IEEPA. "All the tariffs are gone!" is very, very wrong. Trump is considering 'weeks-long campaign' in Iran that would look 'like full-fledged war' and be 'existential for the regime', with 'dramatic influence on the entire region'.
The Trump administration is considering a 'weeks-long campaign' in Iran that could look like 'full-fledged war' and prove 'existential for the regime' in a move that could have a 'dramatic influence on the entire region.' Fears are mounting that the US could be on the brink of a major military confrontation with Iran, with sources warning that any operation would be much larger in scale than recent interventions and could begin sooner than many expect. Insiders say a potential US strike would not resemble a limited or targeted mission but instead unfold as a sustained, weeks-long campaign that would look 'like full-fledged war.' The operation is expected to be coordinated with Israel and would be broader in scope than last year's 12-day conflict, which escalated when the US joined Israeli efforts to destroy Iran's underground nuclear facilities. https://is.gd/7mvFUc Could be true, could be a signal to the mullahs to leave while they can. It would be best to bring in a “car guy” - someone who appreciates automobiles and car culture. Or perhaps an engineer who has experience in production, and appreciates the long term benefits of using quality parts and builds reliability into the product lines.
At best, GM is promoting someone who knows what doesn’t work, and steers them away from the pitfalls of unbridled automation. At least they aren’t promoting an accountant, who uses cheap parts to “save” $100,000 on a production run that will later cost 10x that much in premature failures and reputation damage.
