By then, the fame and money had gotten to him and it was sad to see him devolving into a celebrity caricature performing for his fans instead of a true leader.

Decades back I went on a business trip to England and we took the fast train to Paris there. After a few days there was some issue in the German branch and I had to take a pretty decent train to the Cologne area to work there for a day.
It was literally impossible to take the vaunted trains from there to England. We had to arrange a drive to some newly converted NATO base airport and fly to a small airport near London to get back to the group.

They were still pretty nice in 2016. I and a bunch of other US officers went to a NATO school in Oberammergau, and had to take several trains to get there. They were pretty nice, but the staff spoke no English, so we had to navigate train swaps using my limited German.
