154 Well, the lady is obviously into fur trim and such. I have no idea of this is a costume of some sort or a fashion. (If it's a fashion, it shouldn't be.) Lawrence did his usual superb job with the lady's face and pose with the skin tones and relaxed stance. His portraits typically are excellent. But the outfit, and her hair or wig, distract from the person.

I wonder if he did any landscapes. The sky and forest in the background are stunning.

CBD, thanks for introducing me to this artist. Portraits are not my favorite type of painting but Lawrence's are worthy of study and admiration.

There is a dearth of films to choose from these days. In the 80s and 90s, I bet I averaged 30 visits a year to various theaters. Every year or two you could count on a film by Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Chevy Chase, Eddie Murphy, Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Kurt Russel, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a half dozen other "regulars".

Just a fur cape with silk lining, inside out. She is also holding a "muff" which is a fur tube women used to carry around like a dead cat and stick their hands in.

This is mostly a display of wealth, but notice that the painter is doing a display of skill -- this was very common in paintings of the era and I wish I knew more about it but the best I can do is tell you what I have observed. There are a lot of paintings of different fabrics, often ball gowns or household things like draperies, where the painter shows the shimmering and folds to make them look very realistic. I think it is an extension of artists loving to paint clouds, or trees, or other complex textures to develop skill, but with rich ladies they get paid better.

It's very pretty, I just wish he'd moved her a few inches up! If that's the full painting, and not cut off, the hem of her dress is too close to the bottom, and there's too much sky on top.

But the painter did shimmery well. Definitely showing off their ability to render textures.
