A Goldsmith in his Shop
Petrus Christus

This is sort of a repeat, because the first one I used had an incorrect title, and was also gaudy looking with oversaturated color. For this version I went to the source; The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

From the Met's description:

A celebrated masterpiece of Northern Renaissance Art, this painting was signed and dated 1449 by Petrus Christus, the leading painter in Bruges (Flanders) after the death of Jan van Eyck. The panel attests to Netherlandish artists’ keen interest in pictorial illusionism and meticulous attention to detail, especially in the luminous jeweled, glass, and metallic objects, secular and ecclesiastic trade wares that are examples of the goldsmith's virtuosity. The main figure in this enigmatic painting was long identified as Saint Eligius (the patron saint of goldsmiths) due to the presence of a halo, which was recognized as a later addition and subsequently removed. The panel is likely a vocational painting, which portrays the profession of goldsmithing and perhaps a specific goldsmith. Technical analysis reveals the underdrawing of the goldsmith's face to be very carefully modeled—more so than the faces of the couple—indicating the possibility of a portrait. It has been suggested that he is Willem van Vleuten, a Bruges goldsmith who worked for Philip the Good, duke of Burgundy. In 1449, the date of this painting, the duke commissioned from van Vlueten a gift for Mary of Guelders on the occasion of her marriage to James II, King of Scots. That couple may well be depicted in this painting, portrayed buying a wedding ring that is being weighed on a scale. The girdle that extends over the ledge of the shop into the viewer’s space is a further allusion to matrimony. The convex mirror, which links the pictorial space to the street outside, reflects two young men with a falcon (a symbol of pride and greed) and establishes a moral comparison between the imperfect world of the viewer and the world of virtue and balance depicted here.

Often these descriptions are a mess of post-modern, woke nonsense. This one is good!

13 An odd thing about these style of paintings that has always struck me:

It is like the faces are done separately, remotely. Then when complete they are plopped down on a otherwise completed painting.

It is just a weird look.

Saw a visiting Star Wars costume exhibit at the art museum. With each one, they included the sketches and photos of inspiration. It was surprising how much effort and research went into each one, not to mention the work on some of those beaded and feathered ones worn in the 2nd trilogy.

IIRC, Leia's ear covering was based on a Native American tribe's styling?

Were I that goldsmith, I'd give some serious thought to plying my trade dressed in something other than that richly red outfit. It would be far too easy to ruin it working at the jeweler's bench.

The shelving is reserved primarily, it seems, for his finished works. Red rouge or any polish, or any other such processing material, likely would not be displayed there.

The clear appearing bar might be a quartz or selenite "wand". Dunno about the other one.

137 I like the attention to detail and the use of colors. The woman's gown is especially impressive, even more so when enlarging the image. The brush work and subtle blending of the textures and shading of the gown is wonderful. The realism of the objects, the tools, the glass containers, the appropriate gleam in the metals is excellent. Thanks for providing the Met's explanation of the background of the piece. The context, or possible context, makes this more than a simple portrait.

While it's typical of the place and time, the people's eyes bother me. They seem sleepy with little spark. I have the same problem with Vermeer's faces. It seems an odd lack given the obvious talent displayed in the rest of the painting.

Lady - hand and eyes in a direct line to smith's hand on the scales.

Her partner' s face is turned to the lady, but his side-eye is also focused on the hand and scale. One arm around the lady, the other hand gripping a the hilt of a weapon. That is a cold, wary face on him.

The goldsmith isn't looking directly at the lady. He's apparently looking out the window, likely at the lads. The smith is not happy.

This is painting shold be seen not only as a set-piece portrait of a day in a goldsmith's life. It is rife with intrigue within an allegorical context.

As in, what's the message presented with two rich young men standing in a city square with a falcon on the fist?

Everyone is focused on the scale except for the smith himself.

The problem was the defense under the IEEPA. It should have worked, probably, but the president has several authorities to impose tariffs.

I seem to remember that in the great art machine businesses, like Rembrandt's in later years, the master artist would do the sketches and initial layout, and then the lower level painters would work on the portrait (usually a portrait) according to their specialties. Jan would work on indoor backgrounds, Geertgen did robes/clothing, Jaap did hands, and Koenraad did faces.

Portraits Henry Ford-style. Minor nobles and merchants could now afford to have portraits made, rather than just the wealthiest families.

I assume Trump's team went with the IEEPA as the authority because it was faster and easier to do tariffs of countries as a whole while giving him the authority to go sky high in terms of rates.

Given the SCOTUS ruling, that was obviously a long-term mistake, but it might not be. The short term gains from the threat of 1,000,000% tariffs in people's nightmares got them to the table.

Yes, the admin is in for a short term mess of having to deal with requests for refunds. I assume some will get paid out, but the tariff regime Trump started can just be replaced with a simple declaration.
