First World Problems...

glasschip2026.jpg

That's one of my favorite lowball glasses, and because I am a big fan of Old Fashioneds, it gets heavy use.

Alas, it suffered a chip, and while it wasn't particularly expensive, it is a nice solid, heavy glass that adds to the enjoyment of my cocktails! So I wasn't about to toss the thing. Remember, I am a cheap bastard!

So...what to do?

Some 600 grit sandpaper, a thin punch, and a very long time carefully sanding smooth the jagged edge, and all's right in the world!

A First World Problem AND a First World Solution!

12 I fixed a pyrex lid for mrs B a few days ago the same way. It was a chip on the edge that left it razor sharp, and was going to toss it. I asked what do you do with the pot without a lid? Oh, maybe use tinfoil. Da fuq? It was also her grandmother's. I said give that thing. I ran out to the garage and grabbed some of my stones, stoned the edge smooth, then buffed it out on a polishing wheel. Done.

50 I should do that with a beer mug that sustained similar damage. Said beer mug was purchased for me by a very dear friend, after enjoying a fine meal at the late, great Baltimore Brewing Company, circa 1992.

I also have a thin-walled scotch glass, the last surviving member of a set of eight, given me by another dear friend, circa 1995. I recently noticed a crack in its rim, and it's just a matter of time before the crack grows and the glass joins its lamented brethren.

Little turns 21 this year. Would be an appropriate occasion to procure a set of fine stemware, methinks...

52 Small Mason jars, then you can buy in bulk.

I keep all glass jars that fit standard mason jar screw-tops. Jams, honey, various Amish preserves. I have a cupboard in the garage for them. It’s getting full, so eventually I’ll have to start choosing the best (the honey I get, the roadside vendor has a box for returning the jars, which I’ve started using now that I have an ample supply).

I even have four mason jars with handles, which are perfect for making breakfast drinks, such as an egg, milk, and bourbon. My Oster blender is designed to fit that size mason jar.

I have two glass wine flasks that my grandfather reportedly purchased around 1912 during a street festival in Newark, NJ. They were filled with dago red, and sold for a nickel.

My father would fill them with a funnel and drink from them into the 1980's. The long, narrow neck would aerate the wine as you filled, and drained, the flask. From my research, your theory holds. It holds real good...

I bought what I hoped was going to be my last set of dinnerware. I meant to get some more place settings but stopped short of what I wanted thinking I could add more later. This was the absolute most classic pattern from Wedgwood ("Wedgwood White") and I figured it would always be available. Plus, I wanted to see if bone china was going to suit our usage practices before I committed to more place settings.

Well, it turns out the reason I got such a good price on them was because they were getting ready to discontinue the pattern after 100 years. So now completing the set through Replacements.com is out of my budget. I did add some pieces by an eBay purchase, but it turned out the items were factory rejects, which the seller neglected to mention. Bah!

There's a whole field of study (or snobbery, depending on your tolerance for such) that holds the shape of a glass determines how one perceives the taste of its contents. Beer certainly tastes better served in a glass versus drinking it from the bottle. White wine and champagne taste better from a narrow flute, versus a goblet.

You can probably drink grappa from a woman's slipper, as it already tastes like it was filtered through an old gym sock...

178 Ceramic that breaks the best is a toilet. As teens, my friend and I placed a pink toilet (it was the yearly bulk County trash pickup) on the center yellow lines of a road at the bottom of a hill at 3 AM. The very first car that came down the hill, a 65 Pontiac Bonneville with one headlight, hit the toilet with the corner of his bumper, sending sharp shards after a terrific BOOM 150 feet. We were laughing about 100 feet up the hill. The fellow backed up the hill and said, "Yeah, that was pretty funny, man, but don't be messin' with my ride!"

I can report, at least for me, that the "old school" potato chips made only with salt, potatoes and fried in beef tallow are a decidedly underwhelming gustatory experience, primarily because too many of them tended to be on the overcooked side.

191 My FWP today was dicking with our auto dish detergent dispensers three AA batteries. There was no visible clue of how to access the battery compartment. and the instructions are long gone. I started prying at it with a pocket knife then moving to a butter knife. Plastics were flexing so I backed off. I resorted to Grok and Youtube to finally find a solution. The entire top is surrounded by a collar that can't be seen if you look at the blasted thing. If you didn't know you would never be able to find it. The collar slides down from the top to reveal the batteries. Stupid Chinese design. Ugh.

That will do it, I have started batches like that when I was making it with bottled apple juice.

Another way, if you are starting a batch during apple season, is to just chunk up fresh apples, fill the jar about 1/3 or 1/2 full of the chunks, and fill the rest with water. Ideally use deionized or distilled water, but I have used tap water, and then cut up another apple to drop in a day later when the chlorine has either gassed off or reacted against the first batch of apple. The yeasts on the apple skin are enough to start alcohol fermentation, and the acetic acid yeasts are there as well, ready to start turning the alcohol into vinegar.
When you use apple chunks you have to stir the jar once a day to keep the floaters from molding. You can stop when all the chunks sink to the bottom. It is ready when the vinegar is sharp enough for you.

210 I bought all "new" dishware, along with many completer pieces, from ebay. It is the most mid-century modern it can possibly be. My mom had a couple of pieces of it, and now I have a huge set, and it was relatively cheap.

Vernonware "Organdie" which is a yellow and brown hand painted plaid. So many ginchy pieces, and it is easy to replace if something gets broken.

213 People who dig and collect antique bottles use cutters to turn bottles with broken necks into drinking glasses to sell. It's a way of making something worth nothing into something pretty and useful.
