This all-about-AI blogpost I popped into the comments yesterday:
https://shumer.dev/ something-big-is-happening I wonder if it's a paid ad for AI. If you read it in that light, that seems plausible. Posted by: m at February 13, 2026 04:28 AM (+YA9H) Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at February 13, 2026 04:29 AM (UzL96) 16
... like here:
Start using AI seriously, not just as a search engine. Sign up for the paid version of Claude or ChatGPT. It's $20 a month. But two things matter right away. First: make sure you're using the best model available, not just the default. These apps often default to a faster, dumber model. Dig into the settings or the model picker and select the most capable option. Right now that's GPT-5.2 on ChatGPT or Claude Opus 4.6 on Claude, but it changes every couple of months. If you want to stay current on which model is best at any given time, you can follow me on X (@mattshumer_). I test every major release and share what's actually worth using. I use both gipitee and Claude.
Gipitee to create the initial code base and Claude to refine. They both lose the plot over the the long haul so after a certain point you have to take over. And more lines of code does not mean better code it means the ai is rube Goldbergian the code or are they counting comments in lines of code count. I've found that the AI's over-comment. I'm up early, thanks to a leaping black cat whose name rhymes with "curling" and who has a return appointment with a Vicksburg shelter in his future. (I kid, of course.) I'm still a little sore from my trip and fall on Wednesday, but I may be able to go for a brisk walk this am.

Mawdi Grass is rushing down upon us like a runaway freight train. Linda wants to go to the Sat. parade that is near us here, though it won't block my being able to drive in and out. We no longer have one on the avenue directly in front here that trapped us.
I'm really considering hopping into the car on Monday and driving up to Birmingham as a road trip, to visit the pipe shop there and get away from here until next Thursday. I'm hoping B'ham is far enough away from the craziness that businesses won't be closed on Tuesday. My luck in the past has been to run into a parade wherever I go. First time in Taos, NM? Parade. Putting that Asus 5k 180Hz gaming monitor to the test. (Tom's Hardware)
It's good. It is, but $849 for an IPS monitor is Apple priced. Which isn't really surprising for an Asus monitor. The 218ppi is excellent. You'd have to put your nose an inch from the screen to see the pixel dots. They could've at least added a KVM setup on the back for that kind of money, though. Story behind the hymn mentioned in post 23:
This song was written by Samuel Trevor Francis (1834-1925) after a serious bout with depression. As his biographers tell the story, one winter night as a teen, Francis was walking across the Hungerford Bridge over the River Thames. He paused and stared down into the depths of the river below. He contemplated plunging into the icy waters and ending everything. But instead, John 3:3 came into his mind, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Francis repented and this reformation of heart prompted him to begin writing poetry and lyrics. One of the songs that came from this was “O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus.” Posted by: FenelonSpoke at February 13, 2026 05:58 AM (7RYym) 59

A new baby African penguin has been born at the Audubon Aquarium. We were just there, and the penguins are worth seeing.
The downtown insanity continues with the annual "Greasing of the Poles." No, not as in strippers, or as in citizens of an eastern European country. Years ago drunken paradegoers used to shimmy up the poles supporting balconies in the Quarter. So residents started to grease the poles starting the weekend before the big to-do. Now it's become a semi-official start to the festivities, with music and costumes and a contest for the best decorated poles. No word on whether they clean off the poles starting Wednesday, or if the grease is left to rot. I suspect it's more the latter than the former. I wouldn't want to see a return to the times that made them necessary, but in their time HBCUs really had a useful purpose in educating the "talented tenth" of blacks who were otherwise barred from more prestigious schools. Now, that cohort is being hoovered up by the Ivies and the HBCUs are reduced to admitting anyone who can fog glass. Still, it would be nice if they still endeavored to instill in their students little things like discipline and scholarship, but I fear that, like most schools, cultivation of grievances is their principal purpose. Get a small portable router with wifi and bring it on trips with you. Unp,ug the tv from its ethernet, plug that into your own router. Bingo, you got 1gb wired free internet. I'm done with parades too. I've seen the floats and bands in one combination or another many many times. It's tiring to stand there for an hour or more, and I don't care what they throw to us. I'm nervous about what kind of strangers might be in the crowd around me. As for driving in traffic to a parade route, hunting for parking, and then crawling back home after? Ain't gonna do it. The hordes of cars creeping across the bridge on Sat. and Sun. evening for the "big" parades look like an evacuation.
If I lived *on* the route, so I could watch from my porch or balcony, maybe I'd watch. But otherwise, forget it. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 13, 2026 06:54 AM (wzUl9) 149
