Howdy Hordelings! Thursday night ONT time. You made it! Good job. Now check out the content and join in the gray boxes. What's on your mind tonight?

From the "You Can't Make This Up" Files

Remember the scene in A Christmas Story where the one kid got his tongue stuck to a metal pole that was frozen? Well, this guy says "hold my beer"!
(H/T: Kindltot in comments earlier today)

Drunk man's penis freezes to icy pavement during arrest on night out

A man's penis froze to the ground outside a bar while he was being arrested during a night out.

Blake McPhee was restrained after allegedly becoming involved in a fight at the East Village Pub & Eatery in Fort McMurray, Canada. The fracas spilled out onto the street where temperatures had plunged to below freezing.

During a struggle with police and security, McPhee's trousers and pants fell off. His manhood got stuck to the icy pavement. It is reported McPhee was stuck to the ground like this for around 20 minutes.

Police and security guards had to force the man up - leaving some skin behind in the process - in order to remove him from the ice, it is understood.

***

McPhee has since seen the funny side as he wrote on Facebook: "Man, I don't know how I get myself in these f***** up situations...Guess that's what I get for being a drunk lunatic at a bar."

He added: "Gone are the days a feller can get his wiener frozen f*** solid to the ground without it going viral. Anyways glad I can be of some entertainment and back to making headlines. Gunna go crawl inside a hole and cry myself to sleep now. (P.s sorry ma)."

Thankfully there are no photos of his frozen junk at the link.

Here's a much better story about a human appendage.

Woman’s Prosthetic Leg Swept Out to Sea Is Thrilled its Been Found 10 Months Later

doof-Prosthetic Leg.jpg

A woman whose new prosthetic leg was swept out to sea is “over the moon” after she found it 10 months later, it having been swept right back to the beach where she lost it.

Last April, 69-year-old Brenda Ogden lost her custom-made titanium blade-style prosthesis moments before a swim in the North Sea.

She was posing for a picture with a swimming group she was a part of when a huge wave knocked them all down and took her titanium blade back out to sea with it.

Ogden had her leg amputated below the knee five years earlier following a horrific car crash. The now-retired nurse revealed she waited for over a year to get the false leg, and had only had the blade for a week before the disaster on the beach.

“The leg was specially made to allow me to access water easily,” Ogden told England’s Southwest News Service. “I had never swum in the sea before that day and it was on my bucket list to do so.”

Check out the whole story at the link.

Well discussed here at AOSHQ has been the current state of colleges and universities. Woke curricula coupled with skyrocketing costs. Students saddled with crippling debt upon graduation. More and more people are turning to trade schools. My own son decided to enter into an HVAC apprenticeship a few years ago. He's making great money and loves what he does. The Mike Rowe Works Foundation was created to advocate for trades and even provides scholarships regularly.

Check out this surprisingly fair report from NBC News
(H/T: NR Pax in comments yesterday)

More Bass Stuff!

3rd night in a row talking about funky bass groves. Tonight, let's hear from the great Rick Beato

I will be ignoring any Rush hate tonight. For those of you with taste, here is the whole album. 40 minutes of greatness!

Also - here's Rick Beato again discussing Limelight in Episode 63 of his "What Makes This Song Great?" series.

-----

Born on this date in 1952:
Grammy Award winning American singer and songwriter Michael McDonald, who with The Doobie Brothers had the 1979 US No.1 single 'What A Fool Believes', and the 1993 UK No.7 single 'Long Train Runnin'. He began his career singing back-up vocals with Steely Dan and has also worked with Kenny Loggins, David Cassidy, Van Halen, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin and Toto.

Born on this date in 1950:

Always play your new song for other people before you decide on the title. He says that because the Doobie Brothers biggest hit is 'Long Train Runnin' but everyone *thinks* it's "What A Fool Believes" because that's the actual hook from the song.

Nope. And I'm a HUGE Rush fan--I saw them twice 20 years apart.

Perhaps the best album ever recorded was "Animals" by Pink Floyd.

Or perhaps it was "Hotel California". Or "The White Album".

"Moving Pictures" was epic, but I prefer "Exit Stage Left" when it comes to Rush albums.

32 The oldest examples of "screw in a light bulb" jokes date back to the late 1960s and early 1970s, often targeting specific groups with humor that highlighted stereotypes. These jokes typically follow a format that asks how many people from a certain group are needed to change a light bulb, with the punchline reflecting a stereotype about that group.

Townsend was a "good" guitarist, and an even better song writer.

But he couldn't have recorded a single track as a guitarist on Zeppelin 1. And not more than a single song or two off of Zeppelin 4. The Presence album would have sent him scurrying.

And we could argue about JPJones versus Entwistle, but Entwistle would have been helpless playing keyboards on the "In Through The Out Door" album, which is a John Paul Jones masterpiece.

Led Zeppelin never recorded an album after 1980. The Who never recorded an album that mattered after 1980.

343 I am probably wrong, as usual, I think bass players are the glue that holds a band together. With drums.

All eyes on the singer & acoustic guitar (or plural acoustics with Lynyrd, and man, I love them). I could not tell you who the bass player is, for example in Kansas as my eyes were on Steve Walsh. Same with other good singers like Lou Gramm. They occupy the stage with their voices for me.

I dated a bass player. He was good. Shy, quiet and unassuming but very good in the background. Because of him I am a fan of bass guitars and always, always dance to the downbeat.

With the exception of a flashy bass in Jethro Tull, August 1975, all over the stage in his zebra tux & zebra bass. With his eyes on me. The acoustic guy, by the way, met and married a MS girl in that airport gift shop from MS.

Ian Anderson was not happy with me, & you don't want him shooting those crazy eyes at you & he did to Jeffery Hammond Hammond & me (he missed a cue or something). He was an artist, not a musician and quit that year. The acoustic guy taught him.

I give you the late Boz Burrell in the background of Bad Company. Maybe they prefer the background. Love 'em. XXXX

360 Going by "number of absolute classic songs played on" the best US bands are the Wrecking Crew, the Funk Brothers, and Toto.
----

Toto is actually one of the best bands you could call and say "If you can play a competent set in 6 hours I'll pay you a million dollars" and they could actually *earn* that money. I used to think their guitarist tried too hard to be special--he had a thousand guitar pedals on his board once upon a time. But all these years later, he can still play, and the lead singer suits them.

362 Okay, Horde, need a bit of advice here. Spawn has spawned, 10 days ago his girlfriend produced a lovely Grandbaby boy. Easiest baby ever. Loves his Grandma, naturally.

I went to the condo we purchased for them to live in. My spawn hasn't paid a cent of rent to us for three months. He did move another dude into the condo, with his toddler son, and apparently the dude also has his girlfriend stay there, in the bedroom that was supposed to be for grandbaby.

He also brought a yappy dog, and two cats, neither of which were approved. I walked into the condo yesterday and it was a pigsty. I spent the entire day "helping" them clean it up by saying things like, "put that in the laundry" and "wipe up that crap with a clorox wipe" and "please haul out the trash."

Today, I was going to drive them into the SOA to get a marriage license, which they haven't been capable of doing on their own, apparently. Showed up at agreed time. Spawn was passed out on the couch stoned out of his gourd.

One of the episodes goes on about how wonderful Jeffrey Epstein is for about 5 minutes. By far the funniest part is Leach explaining that Epstein flew Kevin Spacey and Bill Clinton flew to Africa to investigate AIDS. I'll bet they did!

No food in the fridge. Desperate for formula because his girlfriend decided breast feeding was too much trouble.

The place reeks of cat shit and skunk weed dope. Three bongs in evidence, even after I laid down the law that all cigs and weed should be had on the porch, not in the house.

I took them to get their marriage license. I explained that they either pay rent and follow the rules or I sell the condo.

I bought them about $400 of groceries. I am a mom. I can do no less, and still feel like I'm a mom. Catholic guilt....

Do I now: alert CFS that the kid is living in squalor with underage pot use and plenty of booze? Do I call the cops on him for the same? Do I sell the condo out from under their asses? Do I just hope that at some point they get their collective shit together?

374 Personally, I knew my Rush experience was in jeopardy when it came to the later albums and I could grab just about any guitar and have it sound believable. Not so with the earlier stuff. I have guitars and amps that are exactly what he used because when you get down to it they were a huge part of his sound, and they nail it like nothing I ever used. When I found they weren't as important for the later stuff thats when I knew the "thing" that, that hollow growl, that cavernous tone that was on the earlier albums wasn't quite there any more. The opening notes of Bastille day. You are not getting that sound without a semi hollow body like the es335 he used. For the farewell to kings album he switched to that white es355, basically a fancier 335, and that tone is in your face up to the permanent waves album and somewhat on moving pictures. After that, that sound vanished, and little by little he just became wallpaper against geddy's increasing keyboard hobby. They were still great, but they didn't feed the fire in me as a guitar player like the earlier stuff did. I pick up the 335 and 355 and the sound still makes me weak. It channels that earlier stuff.

390 "What's a good entry level transceiver for beginners? "

For VHF, a Baofeng works well enough, if you add a real antenna to it (rubber ducks never work well.) 5W output power. It's what I use.

For HF, 20 watts, the Xiegu G90 has the best feature set, but I know nothing about their build quality or reliability.

For 100 W HF, you could do worse than an ICOM IC-7300. Very popular, good features, esp internal antenna tuner, which you need with any rig.

Always buy new and warranteed, never used.

393 In the Zeppelin war add me to them being great. Plant in his youth had it all. Did I say I focus mostly on singers?

Best live concert would be hard for me as I saw many in my youth. I thought music like that would go on forever, otherwise I would have paid more attention. They were all good because it was pure music then.

I will wish always I had seen Lynyrd, as they are said to be one of the tightest bands due to all their practice.

Wish I had seen Kansas (best album:Left Overture); and Foreigner.

Jethro Tull was possibly the best entertainment and talent. Saw Mountain, Allman Bro,Fleetwood Mac, Marshall Tucker,Pure Prarie League,ZZ Top,Heart, Kenny Loggins a good concert in a small college venue, etc. Eric Clapton was meh as drinking/drugging. Aerosmith, too loud.

I'd say the best live musicians now are Alison Krauss and Union Station. Every one onstage had amazing talent and were having a blast with each other and 3k of us. I will remember this one the most. Probably because I am no longer 20yrs old and taking it all for granted (and not partying like a lunatic).

It was a natural high for us all. Her voice is ethereal. And the only bluegrass music I listen to.

Oh, honey. Get that baby out of there. Tell that son you own the condo (the title?). Kick out the friend. You are now the landlord and can come inspect, right? No smoking, no drugs, no booze in that house.

The reason the mother stopped breastfeeding is she's getting stoned.I guess a drop of maternal instinct in that move.

If you have the title you can call the shots. That son needs to answer to this, realize what is at stake, and it is a lot. Either that or take that baby yourself (if you can) until they realize what they've done to themselves.

I am so sorry. As a grandmother of 3 I would die for them. And I feel even more maternal now than I did for our sons (if that makes sense).

Will pray things will improve. I promise you that I will start praying tonight.

413 390 Remember, to set up a working HF station, the antenna is more important than the radio. I suggest a multiband EFHW to start with. I have two: one handles 10-40, the other handles 10-80. The ability to operate multiple bands really enhances the HF radio experience. EFHWs are inexpensive (more expensive now than they used to be, now around $200,) and you need the real-estate to be able to put them up. They're just wires with a magic transformer on the fed end, from 66 to 132 ft long. I hang them in trees. Good value for the price and multiband capability.

But after living that way for too many years, in his 30’s he found faith, stopped drinking and drugging, and totally reformed. He volunteers and tries to help young who are like he was now. So it can happen! (All of us who knew him never believed it possible)

And he was the proof that it isn’t always parenting at fault. He had 3 older siblings who are marvelous people; he was the one who chose to be the bad seed.

To a point yeah, but when I saw them live last, maybe 15 years ago, it was a tour where lifeson said he was bringing a bunch of guitars with him. He played a PRS a lot, it was ok. Then he grabbed a les paul, and you can hear it, the sound improved. Then....then, he pulled out that white 355 for the encore which he hadn't used in years because it was retired and needed to be restored, which it now was. Holy mother of god, the sound in the room was unreal. There is was, the fucking unmistakable lifeson tone. I lifted mrs B right out of her seat and held her up, pointed her towards the stage, and yelled "look wtf he's playing"!!!. I hadn't seen that guitar in years. The sound was just crushing.

424 390 If you're looking to get licensed, best place to prep is
arrlexamreview.appspot.com

It's free, you don't have to buy any books. Use it to learn the answers, and drill and kill them. All the Q&A are canned, same exact Q&A you'll find on the tests, only they change the order of the four multiple-choice answers. For example, if the question involves math, like Ohm's Law, the numbers on the test will be the same numbers you drilled; you don't have to do math, just memorize the answers.

They make it easy because they want more operators in the hobby; they want everybody to pass.

Simple fact... Your brain is not fully developed until around 25 years old.

I was a freak in my late teens and early 20's. Motorcycle accidents... drugs... drinking my paycheck away... wrecked cars... chute malfunction on a sport dive... broke an eardrum diving when I couldn't clear due to a cold... volunteering for every dangerous silly thing the military would throw at me...

I had no expectation or even desire for a family and kids... until... I hit about 28, and everything became much more clear. My desires shifted.

Thinking on it... I've seen many others 'change' around 25... I think it is a more common tale then we acknowledge.

No food but plenty of booze, not even considering the ick factor of having 2 stoned strangers and their 3 animals living with a 10 day old baby, makes it pretty clear it's the baby and only the baby's welfare you need to concentrate on right now.

446 tcn...I guess I want to know your son's age.

Congratulations on being a grandmother, it is the best honor in the entire world from God. I am sorry you are not yet enjoying this, but you will.

Tell him to kick out the person with the pets...a dog could hurt a 10dy old baby.

With no food in fridge they are sitting around getting high.

The baby: did he look at you? Was he alert? Are they freaking feeding him every 2-3hrs (based on his weight). Dear God, I am upset, too.

I was a NICU step down RN for 10yrs. Babies are my thing.

What you described is horrific. Again, how old are the parents? While you have no control of the mother, you do have a say for that baby.

Yes, call CPS. I would hope they would then give that baby to you. But FIRST kick out the roommate with the dog, since you own the condo. That worries me on top of the stoners and lack of normal attention. They need parenting classes, once they are sober.

If I have offended you I am sorry, but that baby is in danger. It is not party time at the $400k condo. A ten day old infant depends on them to keep him safe, clean and fed. As well as making eye contact and loving him.

Prayers, you have them, for you and baby.

I will. Kill for him. Die for him.

As a pro-life person, I have always told people that if they don't want their kids, I will raise them. I think he and she want him, but they are incapable of becoming unselfish enough to care for him. He doesn't have the luxury of waiting for when and if they become adults. He needs overwhelming love now.

No offense, certainly. I agree with you wholeheartedly. But, AK CPS is a bit of a crapshoot. Babies have gone there and disappeared. Literally. Friends have had grandbabies gone missing, forever. I'm concerned, so I will be using a lawyer to navigate this shit. Somebody who knows the system. It is the least I can do for Grandbaby. And he is Grand, indeed.

He is an easy baby, sleeps well, like almost 3 hours at a stretch. I hope that isn't because he is getting a contact high. She isn't good at taking care of herself, but she is doing pretty darned well with him, so far, except for the environment. She is a user, meaning she thought my spawn would support her. He can't support a limp dick at this point.

But catshit? Really? No. He needs a better life.

I'd fear CPS as well. And lawyer up quick.

Meanwhile, and I don't know how far this condo is...I'd be popping in daily if I owned the condo. Inspect. Kick the stoner out with the pets for starters.

Sit their asses down and tell them you are going to take that baby legally and you will be checking on him daily. A healthy newborn should pee every time he wakes from a 3hr nap. Hydration is important. He should be pooping green/yellow at this point vs meconium black if he is fed.

When is his next check up for weight with a pediatrician? Due to HIPPA they won't discuss with you if you are not on a list, but, it is vital he gets weighed. It is probably better he is on formula for his growth.

460 Tcn, consider what you know about your son's gf. Do you think it's wise for him to marry her after all?

I ask, because I have a family member who married his gf after their baby was born.. and expresses to me how very unhappy he is with their relationship and the general state of their household, years later. Makes me sad for all of them, really.

The man, because he'll be *on the hook* now for some amount of alimony after this long, on top of child support. He works fulltime, even though it's not much and no bennies, but stays to be sure the child benefits from his $.

The woman, because she's a welfare momma and that's her thang. (There are other kids that are not related to family member) Got whatever problems and keeps a filthy house.

Their child MOST OF ALL, caught in the middle of absolute squalor and parents who can barely stand to be around each other, but stay together anyway.

The other kids, because Momma ditched their dad(s) when she hooked up with my family member and let them misbehave and be nasty to him, despite the fact that he was supporting all their ungrateful little asses.

Sick and sad.

462 Cont...my rampage about the baby, tcn.

I almost dehydrated my 10lb newborn at 3wks of age. Not from neglect (breastfeeding) but because I was not getting a lot of sleep and he was starving as I could not keep up. He got on formula and we knew then how much he took in.

Those parents need to know this. No doubt were taught this in the hospital. Wet diapers are important. It's good he's sleeping 3hrs and that is normal, as newborns take a bottle every 2-3hrs then all hit a growth spurt at 3wks. Then repeat every 3wks to build up volume for growth.

Please do let us know how things are going and know you are in our prayers. Forgive my rants,as that was what I once did for a decade: I wore a pager for mother's to call me with questions once they got home. I swore no one would go through what I did with our first...and I was a nurse, which made my stupidity worse, lack of sleep and post c-section did not relieve my guilt.

You are going to be ok with that baby. Ok? It's all going to be well. If I owned that condo I'd be there daily. Hell, even if I did not own it I'd be there and they'd be knowing why.

You bought it so if your name is on that title you have rights. Are they paying you rent? Landlords don't put up with this stuff.

I don't know how long it will take your son and the baby's mother to get over the fact that they are now responsible for a baby. Being stoned as a teen does that (how old is she?). Does your son have a job?
