One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six.
-- Dylan Thomas

To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake it is necessary to stand out in the cold.
-- Aristotle

Yeah, that's a classical quotation because I couldn't find one about a snow hat!

Winter is a grand season, and the inconvenience of a foot or so of snow on the ground is dwarfed by its beauty. Yes, it's my favorite season, and why I will never live in the south, no matter how wonderful a place it is!

The purpose of an objective scoring system is to eliminate exactly the kind of whining and whinging and loser-talk that is on full display by one of the stars of the Canadian Men's Olympic hockey team.

Bitter Canadian star Nathan MacKinnon shades US after Olympic loss: 'You be the judge'

"You be the judge of who was the better team today," MacKinnon said after the game, according to the Canadian Press.

"Just finishing. That's it," MacKinnon added when asked what more Canada could have done. "The looks we had, we would've taken any day. I missed an open net myself, and I really wish I could have that one back."

I AM the judge.

Well...I and the scorers, who seem to have decided that contrary to what the entitled little bitch McKinnon thinks, the United States of America won the game.

By scoring more goals than their opponents.

Funny how that works!

This is why cats are not good pets. This is why cats should be kept in cages. This is why dogs are the only animals that should be free to roam our homes.

I'm lucky to be alive after sustaining 'car crash injuries' tripping over my cat

A UK man miraculously survived after sustaining a broken neck, fractured spine, smashed ribs, blood in his lungs and other “car crash”-evoking injuries from — wait for it — tripping over his cat.

“I can’t remember much, just falling fast — it was quick and it was over within seconds, then I was at the bottom,” victim Chris Rowley, 59, told the Mirror.

The freak “Apocalypse Meow” accident reportedly occurred on the evening of Oct. 23 while the Leicestershire-based professional musician was home alone with his hairless Egyptian sphinx kitten, Eric Morecambe.

Although...maybe the cat was just getting back at its owner for the asshole name he gave him!

2 Wow first on a snow thread, does life get any better?

Actually came home and shoveled several inches of winter off the driveway. Then went inside to a fresh seared steak, roasted potatoes with a side of asparagus prepared by the mrs.

5 The Elon Musk haters have come up with a new, shocking, statistic!

The Ford Pinto had a death rate of 85 people for 10 million cars sold. The Cybertruck hasn't sold 10 million, but the fatality rate so far maths out to 1,452 people killed per 10 million sold.

This article by a "world class software engineer" bases this shocking claim on three (3) crashes where a Cybertruck caught fire in a fatal accident, killing a grand total of five (5) people.

Since only 34,438 Cybertrucks were sold as of January 1,2025, that leads to the high fatality rate.

I guess being a "world class software engineer" doesn't teach you about the perils of relying on small sample sizes.

7 Looks like light n fluffy mountain snow. My daughter lived outside Denver and got that 8 or 10 times a year. Light and easy to shovel. Rarely induces a heart attack.

There are aspects of winter I like, but it is probably my least favorite season. Thus, I'm a contented Texan. Nevertheless, I appreciate your viewpoint, and your sharing of it, which was very pleasant. I wish I could enjoy winter more at times, and not get done in by darkness and short days. 6 months of summer can get tiresome, too, but somehow I'm constitutionally suited for it.

Thanks for the somehow uplifting winter thoughts.

113 This article by a "world class software engineer" bases this shocking claim on three (3) crashes where a Cybertruck caught fire in a fatal accident, killing a grand total of five (5) people.

Since only 34,438 Cybertrucks were sold as of January 1,2025, that leads to the high fatality rate.

I guess being a "world class software engineer" doesn't teach you about the perils of relying on small sample sizes.
Posted by: The ARC

For a sense of scale - One in 7,000 of anything sold did not result in a fatality. Except maybe euthanasia drugs.
And ~35,000 is not a small sample size. It is a 100% sample of Cybertrucks.

..and on the other side...

Passenger vehicle safety is usually measured in fatalities per 100,000,000 passenger miles.

I recall, back in Colorado, getting so much snow in March 2003 that I had to get out my ladder, drag it through the snow, and push the snow from the vent stacks on the roof of my house so's we would not die of CO poisoning. The official total was 3 feet, but at my house it was closer to 4.

135 The snow in the East is a conspiracy to make us in the Intermountain West sad, envious, and sometimes flat out ticked off. However, life goes on. We have about half of normal snowpack in the mountains and hope not to die this summer. There is hope for snow for me til May, and then I will give up.

Our grands called, one to read a book to us for homework for PreK4. Then we had to sing happy birthday to her as she turns 5 tomorrow and has plans and is very demanding, but so cute and funny we do whatever she wants. We'll see her highness on Wednesday.

Then she and her brother got the phone and changed backgrounds rapidly (we have no idea how to do this). We went from Morocco, to a beach, castle, and Space Shuttle in the span of seconds. In every shot they, in the foreground, appeared to have a ceiling fan embedded in their heads. Their Golden appeard with her stuffed animal.

We finally said goodbye and my husband said he felt over stimulated. It was like an acid trip, but a pleasant one.

Just saw the chimps yesterday, so it was not like we don't see them often.

And death rates for random low-frequency things (like murder) are usually given per 100,000 population. A third of that is a plenty-big sample size.

Assuming 1 truck, 1 owner. Any co-owned vehicles get even closer to 100K.

Cybertrucks compare well to transexuals, though. Trannys killed 8 people just in February, just in the USA and Canada, and Cybertrucks have only burned 5 people to death, ever!

Make sure everyone knows where the mechanical door release is. I'm convinced Mitch McConnell's sister in law drowned because she didn't know there was a mechanical door release in additional to the electrical release.

My car-pooler who owned a Tesla didn't know there was a mechanical release until I showed her where it was.

I took the ACT with a hangover from a sleepover party. Enough for state universities and, as I was 16yrs old and skipping my junior year due to bussing and the federal gubment, I did not really care to take it over. Because I was going to be a flight attendant once I was in college for 2yrs. Fly the skies of TWA and Pan Am, because I made great decisions.

Three years later it would have been nice to have taken advanced math, chemistry and physics in HS when I was unserious, but I did fine in college.

My first semester of sophomore year and taking trig, microbiology, Spanish and English Lit I made a 4.0 GPA. My father, seeing the report card, asked if it was a joke!

So I should write dear stupid Gavin and inform him that yes, he is a retard who needs a hair stylist, but all that matters for many college kids, or any kids, is figuring out what you want. Then go for it.

I did not need a fake black ebonic accent, either, Gavin, you puthy hatted putrid pretender.

215 I quit gambling when my daughter was born (along with smoking). And I never did bet on the Olympics, because they're so crooked.

But I'm kind of kicking myself for not betting on the hockey games against Canada this year. It was such an easy bet. I didn't know the US was going to take both gold medals, but I knew they'd sweep Canada.

Canada has historically beaten the US in the Olympics, and bettors are mostly tards who bet on the past, so the odds were in their favor in that regard.

But the NHL released players for the Olympics for the first time in 12 years, and the Canadian pros have been outclassed by the American pros for 30 years, and especially in the last 10 - if they couldn't muster the talent when money was on the line, they couldn't rally it up for the love of the game.

It was just a slam dunk bet against the bookies, and I should've placed one.

I was a very bored B student in High School... who took Pre Calculus as a Freshman (yeah, older students hated me). We didn't have any advanced placement stuff back then, but physics, math, all good... sucked at Chemistry and English, and a lot of History. Flunked Spanish...

Mom was a Middle School English Teacher, at was at the end of her wits trying to deal with me...

Then, PSATs, SATs... scored extremely high, but did not care... I was... rudderless. I was told much later that Colleges WERE sending packages to me, that Mom intercepted.

Ended up in Junior College for a couple of years... at which I sucked. Spent more time snow skiing than in class. Totally non motivated.

Then, one day, a good friend of mine's car broke down, and he needed a ride to an appointment.... to the Navy Recruiter. Took the ASVAB on a whim... then the Nuc Field Qual Test... and was in bootcamp within 3 weeks.

Life... is weird.

We prep for hard winters here, and we've had nothing here. We've been grilling here this winter and it's not right.

Send snow!

Posted by: fourseasons at February 23, 2026 10:59 PM (3ek7K)

We never know what the hell we'll end up with in jersey. We could go 3-4 years of no snow at all, sometimes longer, and then get a winter where we'll have 19 snowstorms, small ones, maybe 4 inches. One year, our January was packed with 60 degree days, and the last few years its in the 20's. They are great with snow removal here though. We had 18" last night and I woke up to plowed roads. Some people will do stupid shit like sell snowblowers because they didn't use them in a few years, then look surprised when everywhere is sold out and a big storm like this one is on the horizon. Well, because a bunch of chuckleheads like you all sold theirs and are now scrambling. The local governments are usually always prepared no matter what.

Sometimes I think, "I should have been serious & tried in HS vs goofing around & having fun." Then I think, nah,you did ok & still goofed around in college but did really well.

Oddly the microbiology course pointed me to medicine then nursing. I had no physics or chemistry in HS, it was one or the other at the university competing with about 100 guys set for med school or engineering. I dropped physics, did well in pre-med chemistry, anatomy and physiology.

Saw my physics TA a month after I dropped at a party. He said, "I wish you hadn't dropped, I could have gotten you through." I was clueless in that class & said, "Unless you were going to take the exams for me, I don't see how!"

I did a quick turn from working in a lab or pre-med to nursing and all was well. I could not see myself culturing poop, blood and urine and never seeing many people. Or 8 more years of school.

Once I had our first boy I never wanted to work full time and didn't til they were in HS. Had opportunities for a MS degree and said no.I had it all right there with my chimps at home, working once a week.

this is kind of a scary thing. We used to have a National Narrative. It was driven by the 6 Oclock news on the 3 major networks.

Now? No one watches TV news at all. No one reads newpapers... it's all driven by Al Gore Rythms on the Intertubes. Which, amplifies the extremists on both sides... so people end up thinking either ONE extreme or the Other... is the norm.

Which is why we are so divided... most people are afraid to talk about politics in public. Only the most extreme do.

252 Oh FFS, the Canadians only outshot the US by 14 shots for the game, including OT (42 shots vs 2. so that's under 4 shots per period with the OT thrown in. Oh and this included a 5 on 3 power play opportunity for Canada (interestingly, I think they only got 2 or 3 shots on goal for the 5 on 3 time). I did note that the Canadians did get the better of play for the 2d and third periods, but I thought that it smacked more of desperation rather than Canada being the "better team." It was clear into the 3rd that Canada was having a real serious problem solving the US defensive posture and fantastic goalkeeping. Also - I have watched the OT period a number of times now. The Canadians got caught flat-footed when Hughes poked away the puck out of the US end. Makar (who had been trying to get that puck and crash the US goal) stopped skating (or started skating way too late as he saw what was developing on the other end) so there was no one to cover Hughes, essentially, when that absolutely golden crossing pass came to him. The rest is pure skill with Hughes' shot a literal laser beam through the 5 hole. You lost Canada, live with it. Try not to lose your country too.

Yes, once they had to face pro hockey players, Canada got f'd in the a. Totally predictable.

Olympic hockey is bush league - once you put real athletes in the game, everything changes - and Canada's best are not up to the American challenge, and they haven't been since I was a little boy.

268 Canada didn't even dominate most of the game, though I thought they did dominate the third period. USA dominated the first period, and led 1-0 afterwards. The second period was a back-and-forth tussle, and Canada (which was an All Star team, no question) definitely skated with more energy in the final period. They did outshoot USA by a lot throughout, but the measure of a game is not the number of shots on goal.

The in OT, Canada lost. So MacKinnon, who did miss an open net shot wide, can go chew on that.

Just throwing the puck in the direction of the net does not, officially, count as a "shot". It counts only if the puck either goes in the net, or would have, but for the action of a defensive player. "Shots" that bounce off the goalposts are not counted in the tally.

Even on an NHL-sized rink, power plays give a small advantage to the defenders, since there's no icing. On the wider Olympic rink, dumping the puck into the Canadian zone is even easier. Two or three guys just can't hold the whole blue line.

A "careful" power play in the NHL spends most of the 2:00 retrieving the puck from its own zone. Only getting 2 or 3 shots on an Olympic rink seems about right, really.

High-resolution Chinese satellite imagery shows that all US Navy littoral combat ships have left Bahrain port, and a Burke-class destroyer has also been seen leaving.

-The reason for leaving the Bahrain naval base is that they want to move to the southern Sea of Oman and northern Indian Ocean, where they are out of range of Iranian anti-ship cruise missile shore-launched systems... Also, Iranian tactical ballistic missiles cannot target the base, or if they do, the ship is not there.

We kind of have our own bathrooms. We both shower in the master bath, but the main bath is across from her office, so she uses that a lot. The 3rd bath, a half bath, is by the family room where I'm always hanging out, so I'm always using that one. I still put the lid down though, because its by the laundry room and she might sneak in every so often. If there is a woman in the house its like an airplane. My folks were from smaller families, as am I, but my grandparents were from Big Catholic Farm Families. Big enough that the size of the local dating pool meant that Grandma and one of her sisters wound up married to two brothers from another family. 392 Haha, Bers...

There's a 7 year gap between the older 2 and younger 2 kids, which meant me & older bro had to babysit younger kids. It was chaos!

Maybe that's why I was never too upset that I couldn't have any of my own.

Posted by: JQ at February 24, 2026 02:02 AM (rdVOm)

The grandparents on both sides moved in the early 70's, and their new houses got the elaborate finished basements. Mt paternal grandparents got lucky, it was that way when they moved in, the other had it done after they moved. Before that there was no finished basements, so we basically used the main floor, but they shoved us in a spare bedroom. I have an ancient 8mm home movie that my father shot at his mothers house before they moved. Its hysterical, he zooms in on the door, which somebody opened slowly and poof, total chaos, the cousins were jumping around doing all kinds of shit, and then slowly you see it...a wooden spoon slowly drifts into the frame wielded by my aunt and the kids just stop. I have video proof of a wooden spoon being wielded by an italian aunt. The shit is real. lol

393 Balochistan is in the eastern part of Pakistan and they hate each other and the Balochs want to be set apart/independent of Pakistan.
--
BREAKING: Following the unification of terrorist groups in Balochistan under a single organization several months ago, five Kurdish terrorist groups have now also declared a unified alliance to fight against Iran

The PJAK, Komala, PAK, PDKI, and Khabat formed an alliance today named the 'Alliance of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan'.

The unification of seperatist forces in North-Western Iran (Kurds) and South-Eastern Iran (Balochis) is almost certainly in preparation for a joint ground offensive against the Islamic Republic in case of a full-scale war by the U.S. and Israel

We both eventually got married. That was always interesting, when his kids didn't believe the stuff he told them he did as a kid he would point to me and say oh yeah, ask your uncle. lol

Hanging out with my older cousin, going to go-go bars when he was 15-16, started going down the shore throwing his dick around. My uncle had this huge mercury, so my cousin would take it out. they would drive around, hit bars, then moon people from the back seat. They called it the moon merc. He lived like he was in the movie saturday night fever. Me on the other hand, metal guitar player, yeah I was satan. lol

Quitting is brutal. I'm not 100%. I'll grab one every so often, but some decent time passes between each. Fuck it, moderation I say. Smoking a bunch of them every day is where you get screwed, but 1 every so many days? I'm not even going to concern myself with that. I think 1 ever so often is probably safer than hitting a vape every 30 seconds. I tried a vape, it made my lungs feel heavy after a while. screw that.
