The Morning Rant

punk-monkey.jpg

The petulance of Trump Derangement Syndrome is embarrassing, but in most cases it is childish political entitlement masquerading as "speaking truth to power," or some such nonsense. But when it crosses the line into geopolitical reality, TDS is costly and dangerous.

We can criticize the F-35 program on multiple fronts, but what it does superbly is mesh multiple different forces into an integrated response. It is simply better at its job than any other platform. The recent attack on Iran by Israel's F-35s is an excellent example of its superiority. It is the most modern war plane on earth, and there is no getting around that fact.

For Canada to consider a clearly inferior platform because of its economic battles with the Trump administration is short-sighted in the extreme. We will have to step in and buttress Canada's already pathetic armed forces if they choose the clearly inferior Swedish plane. But TDS is all-encompassing, even if it means jeopardizing the national security of Canada!

Why Experts Say Canada's Plan to Ditch the F-35 Is a Strategic Disaster

In 2022 Ottawa selected the U.S. Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II – a fifth-generation, stealth multirole fighter – committing to 88 aircraft to meet agreed NORAD, NATO, and Arctic security requirements. The F-35’s advanced sensor fusion capabilities and deep strike profile were seen as essential to defending vast northern airspace alongside U.S. forces.

However, that consensus about what it takes to meet these requirements appears to have evaporated. After Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered a review of the F-35 contract in 2025 amid escalating U.S.–Canada trade tensions, Ottawa signalled interest in alternative options – notably Sweden’s Saab JAS-39 Gripen E, a 4.5-generation fighter pitched with the promise of 12,600 Canadian industrial assembly and jobs.

In response to reports that Ottawa is on the verge of siding with Saab, U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra warned that a pivot away from the F-35 would strain or “alter” the NORAD framework, likely forcing the U.S. to deploy its own fighters more often into Canadian airspace if interoperability is lost.

Carney’s stance on the situation is undeniably political, reflecting ongoing friction with Washington over tariff disputes and rhetoric seen in Ottawa as unpredictable. Those problems have contributed to the growing unease among Canadian policymakers over a perceived over-reliance on U.S. defense systems.

I am not sure why relying on American military systems is a bad thing. We share a continent, a border, a language, and even some culture. Canada simply isn't big enough, rich enough, or technologically advanced enough to go it on their own.

Canada and Carney remind me of the joke about the mouse that creeps up to an elephant and begins to hump its leg. The elephant looks down, the mouse looks up and says, "Don't worry, I'll be gentle."

I can sympathize with other countries. Nobody wants their foreign affairs policies to be dictated by reliance on another country. That certainly includes us.

India is developing its own aircraft carriers, and the planes to go on them. No, they won't be world class, not even close, but they're really anxious to have an indigenous weapons capability. It's hard to blame them, but sometimes you just have to accept that you don't have the tech base to be world class.

China has dumped untold amounts of money into their MIC, because they DO have the tech base, and they want to develop it further. They accept that much of their stuff isn't quite there yet, but they're willing to continue dumping money into it because they can't really depend on anyone else.

Optimization for a single mission is a real thing…. It’s a whole other question as to whether we need optimized single-mission systems at this point. I suspect we don’t but don’t know for sure…

59 The F-35 have some level of ability to control UAV's. Armed drones. The pilot would have some autonomy over how those UAV's are used.

As a (potential) force multiplier, that's significant.

But it's very risky to have UAV's and manned aircraft in the same physical airspace, separated by less than a mile if you're not 100% confident in the system as a whole.

Trust... is what we're working on right now. The tech's already there.

This may be irrelevant anyways with PRC advantages in manufacturing in general, and drones in particular.

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark, developed under the Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) program.

The Navy's variant, the F-111B, was intended for carrier operations but proved too heavy and unsuitable, leading to its cancellation after trials.

The Air Force adopted the F-111A as a strike bomber but didn't need or want the naval features like reinforced structure for carrier landings, which added unnecessary weight and complexity.

121 Canada and the UK are both "fighting" (politically and geopolitically) with the US.

Canada's flop over to Swedish multi-role jets makes North American air defense more complicated than necessary. It's a poke in the eye. Trump's eye.

UK and their dicking around with the islets that Diego Garcia is on, tossing them into China's sphere of influence is another poke in the eye.

Both designed to "punish" the US (but mostly Trump) for not doing what those politicos in the UK and Canada wanted him to do.

This is SO TRUE.

He was a wonderful guy, but here are the first three things he had to tell this American (I was wearing a baseball cap with an American flag on it) when we met:

(1) don't forget that the British burned down The White House in 1814;

(2) you're not gonna be popular around here wearing that hat; and

(3) we all hate Trump (and when one of his friends asked me "What's one good thing about Trump?" -- I replied "He doesn't give a shit what anybody thinks about him!", to which the dude paused ... and said "I guess you're right").

good question, mostly the F35 will live because of its EM and air superiority capabilities. Right now, drones can't challenge the F-35 but the F-35 can control drones and carry broad spectrum jammers that can disable most cheap drones.

Because taking out ground troops is only one aspect of warfare. We're going to need both autonomous systems for a variety of roles, but also platforms with a human in the loop, at least for awhile. There will be an ever-present danger that the enemy will figure out how to disrupt our communications with the platforms, or in the case of full autonomy, scramble its "thinking".

The biggest danger, IMHO, is the ability to park a pedestrian container full of attack drones somewhere near large military and infrastructure assets. It doesn't matter how good your platform is if it's a pile of smoking slag in a hangar.

Because the generals don't trust the drones enough. I suspect that's changing, slowly.

As the Department of Homeland Security explained, "Drug trafficking, Distribution of child pornography, burglary, fraud, DUI, embezzlement, solicitation of a minor, human smuggling are all categorized as 'non-violent crimes.'" When that category is included, the number leaps to nearly 70 percent.

------------

Then account for the fact that for every "charged" or "convicted" crime committed, there are like 20+ more crimes most criminals have committed and for which they are NOT charged.

More advanced radars and sensors give you more capabilities to track and intercept drones. You also need a fighter that can effectively engage enemy fighters that are hunting your drone killers.

You could employ a bunch of F-4s to hunt enemy drones, but you'll quickly run out of pilots to fly them, and once your ground based radars are destroyed and AWACS is shot down they're going to struggle to even spot drones.

--64% of Canadians think they should stop buying all military equipment from the US immediately.

-- 65% of Canadians think they should spend more on Canada's expense than it does

-- 32% of Canadians would support a new $100 tax to increase the Military budget

-- 60% of Canadians have a positive opinion of their Armed Forces

AND, here's the best one:

-- 50% (half of the population of Canada) of Canadians believe that Canadian Armed Forces can effectively defend Canada

________

My point is that it's not just TDS. Most Canadians are unaware of their current situation. They have no concept of their degraded military branches or their outdated, and outright non-existent m military apparatus. Unfortunately, Canada's Constitution bars individual provinces from purchasing their own military equipment. It would have been funny to sell F-35's to Alberta and Saskatchewan individually to see Ottawa have a coronary.

227 When the topic of drones is raised I often think of Michael Crichton’s novel Prey… which dealt with swarms of nano bots…. If you could get non-nano ( regular sized) drones to do coordinated activities in large swarms (10,000 or more) I’d think that would be a very formidable destructive military force

228 Canada used to be a player, but that ended in the late 1950s with the cancellation and destruction of the 17 CF-105 airframes.

229 I'd bet some of those MENSA types do a little peacocking. If you're willing to take the effort to join, there's a decent chance you'll boast about it.

I would rank MENSA membership somewhere roughly in between people who do a Wordle every day, and people who bet on horses every day.

230 The current average mission-capable rate of Canada's CF-18 fleet is approximately 40%, based on a February 2025 military readiness report obtained by CBC News. This means only about 40% of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) inventory, including the CF-18s, is considered serviceable and ready for action, with 60% deemed "unserviceable" due to aging airframes, maintenance shortages, and obsolete systems.

Some sources indicate mission-capable rates may have previously hovered around 36%, reflecting long-term sustainment challenges. The CF-18s, many nearing 45 years of service, are being kept operational through upgrades like the Hornet Extension Project (HEP), but structural fatigue and supply chain issues continue to constrain readiness. You may now continue.

232 I think that at one time I could have passed the MENSA test. But when I found out how many of their members are in prison, I decided that I did not want to be associated with them.

Since then, the gray cells are dying off.

233 182 According to a recent report, if Russia were to invade the EU, Germany would fall in about a week. GB only has enough ammo for eight days of fighting.
Posted by: Old Blue at February 10, 2026 11:54 AM (up14Y)

Even if they hadn't spent their arsenal in Ukraine. The Russians couldn't invade the rest of Europe. Their logistics would turn it into a turkey shoot. The different gauge rail lines would force large concentrations of material. The entire NATO war machine is built to blow up your stuff and deny it to you. The Russians still insist on running their army on big, rail based piles of stuff.

234 Canada's flop over to Swedish multi-role jets makes North American air defense more complicated than necessary. It's a poke in the eye. Trump's eye.
_____

It's a poke in America's eye. Not criticizing this post, I just want to point out that when Trump is trying to Make America Great Again, he's trying to help the US citizen. So when countries "get back at Trump" for something he is trying to do, I take it personal. It isn't Trump that is being harmed, he'll be fine no matter.

235 217 How many inexpensive drones have made air-to-air kills of Uke and Russian high-performance fighter and attack aircraft?

How many Russian ground, air, and naval platforms have the Ukes destroyed with drones? There's a reason the Russians can no longer keep a serious Navy in the Black Sea and they're running out of their AWACS. Russia is even running out of tanks. Russia.

Air-to-ground/sea kills. Different combat environment.

Large swarms are no longer inexpensive.

Pakistan just recently sent over 1000 drones at India, and India appears to have very successfully defended themselves using AA and jamming.

In addition to that, speaking directly to the court, he said, ‘Eat my d****, b****. I'm going to pop your *** and s*** my d***, b****.'"

241 Late to the party but I’d argue Canada no longer shares a culture with the United States. They have cheerfully acquiesced in the destruction of their liberty, and are unfit to be free and incapable of self-government,

And you know why they rejected their liberty?

Because paying for a doctor was JUST TOO HARD.
