Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Thread - February 10, 2026 [Not Doof]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety. I know what you're thinking. Where's Doof? This Tuesday night ONT looks suspiciously like a Wednesday night ONT. If a Wednesday night ONT is posted on Tuesday night, is it still a Wednesday night ONT - just misplaced on the time-space continuum? or has the posting on Tuesday transformed the Wednesday ONT into a Tuesday ONT at a molecular level? So many questions. TRex is just a dinosaur with a small brain and short arms. All I know is that Doof is detailed elsewhere this evening, so it is you and me. Glad you stopped by and pleased you've chosen to patronize the ONT. Happy to spend a little interweb time with my favorite Morons. What will happen tomorrow night? Tune in tomorrow and find out! In the meantime, an ONT means another edition of very random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Pants are optional regardless of the day. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. [Top photo: Matterhorn, Switzerland]![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A 12-year-old Dallas student's four-year-long science project may have resulted in his becoming the youngest person to ever achieve nuclear fusion. Aiden McMillan, a Dallas Independent School District seventh-grader, said he started work on his ambitious project when he was just 8 years old, and spent the first two years studying nuclear physics concepts before building his first prototypes. He said it took some work to ensure his mother was comfortable with his tinkering. ![]() Written correspondence can be sent to moronhobbies at protonmail dot com. Are you lurking ?? No offense to the OP, but Les Claypool is the singular worst bass player I've ever heard. There is no such thing as "Lead Bass Player". Bass is supposed to aligned with the drummer in the "rhythm section". He overplays...badly...and on every song. If he wanted to be a guitarist, he should have given up the bass and played guitar.
And I feel the same way about Tool's drummer. There's no such thing as "lead drummer". Provide the rhythm, and let the other musicians tell the story. Posted by: Crusader at February 10, 2026 10:13 PM (Cjcf6) 38

John Paul Jones(John Richard Baldwin) of Led Zeppelin.
------ Absolutely! AND he could play the keyboards amazingly as well! "In Through The Out Door" is often referred to as the John Paul Jones album. He was the one most centered at the time of the recording (Page was in a bad place) and his bass and keyboards dominate that album. IF you've never paid attention to John Paul Jones on *keyboard*, check out the Led Zeppelin song "Carouselambra". That entire song is a legacy piece for John Paul Jones. It’s great (usually) when kids start early in their craft or chosen field. Wehrner Von Braun got in trouble as a youth for attaching solid rockets to a toy wagon, frightening the womenfolk and horses in his small burg.
Young Arthur Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa had an interest and n building radios in the 1920s, this was like the Internet of the day. For whatever reason, young Arthur could receive the radio transmissions at his parents home from a polar expedition being conducted by the military when no one else, including the US Navy were having any luck. He went on to eventually form Collins Radio, a highly respected electronics manufacturer for many years. I remember a Black Hawk driver in the .mil who had a lot of experience in general aviation, and he told me “Collins” was the only thing he ever wanted to see when he got into the cockpit of an airplane. Today it’s part of some humongous corporate conglomerate, Rockwell-Collins, but it started with some kid in his bedroom winding coils, and bugging his parents to buy him a couple WD-11 tubes. Love stories like that. Posted by: Common Tater at February 10, 2026 10:22 PM (5119n) 65

The first action to happen when Navy ships get alongside to swap supplies (Underway Replenishment) is to send over the phone and distance messenger line. Usually with a grenade launching gun. —— It could be, their way of letting you know “trans women are women!!” Could be. It is sad we have to reverse-engineer the “news” these days, but that’s the world we live in. The reason I suggest this might be the situation, a couple years ago a story circulated about a suicide attempt out in the Mojave or someplace like that, they rescued this person. The article was very heavy on “She” and “The woman” and “her” adjectives, way way over the top, over and over. A light clicked off in my head. It was tranny. I can’t prove it, but I know that’s what happened. Maybe that isn’t what happened in this latest atrocity, but something to consider. Posted by: Common Tater at February 10, 2026 10:34 PM (5119n) 93

We might as well listen to a Joe Satriani album. At least there would be speed. Instrumental "rock" or "metal" is just...uninteresting. And both of those "lead" bass players should just take up guitar and be done with it.
Posted by: Crusader >Now do Classical music. Jazz? ---- Same story. A properly marketed "two lead bass players!!!" band would out-draw the typical classical or jazz band. And none of them would out-draw Joe Satriani...who wouldn't outdraw a Ratt gig at an Indian Casino. I'm not asserting Les Claypool can't play bass. I'm merely asserting he shouldn't, because he gums up the recordings he's associated with. Keith Moon could clearly play drums, but Pete Townsend admitted that playing in a band with him AND John Entwistle was hard because neither of them were focused on keeping the rhythm going even though both were playing rhythm positions. Just keying the mike give "specialized equipment" a line of bearing. Takes a mili-second. You can use two lines of bearing to get a position, and send a missile to that location. Signal Flags or flashing light are more secure, but have been discontinued by the US Navy. Theoretically, a gyro-stabilized laser can link ships within visual range. However, wha tis done is to use space assets or other high-flying transponders. Satellites carry a lot of the coordination data and voice traffic. "The nation's largest public utility—the Tennessee Valley Authority—says it now wants to keep operating two coal-fired power plants it had planned to shutter, changing course before a meeting of its board, which has a majority of members picked by the Trump administration.
In new filings, TVA's signaled that it wants to ditch closure dates for the Kingston Fossil Plant and Cumberland Fossil Plant in Tennessee, which would require further action from its board. The new plan would still include introducing natural gas-fired plants at both locations. TVA had intended to shutter its remaining, aging coal plants by 2035 in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that spur climate change. But the utility, which partners with local power companies to serve roughly 10 million people in seven states, said it is rethinking the coal plant closures because of regulatory changes and increasing demand for electricity." 37 No offense to the OP, but Les Claypool is the singular worst bass player I've ever heard. There is no such thing as "Lead Bass Player". Bass is supposed to aligned with the drummer in the "rhythm section". He overplays...badly...and on every song. If he wanted to be a guitarist, he should have given up the bass and played guitar.
Posted by: Crusader at February 10, 2026 10:13 PM (Cjcf6) I'm honestly not sure if these are counterpoints or not. Bass as lead: Flea in Red Hot Chili Peppers. He actually does keep the rhythm, but it's bass-forward party music, and I couldn't even tell you the guitarist's name without looking it up. If this, then not that: you could say that about every metal guitarist with 7+ strings tuned at B-standard on down. If they really want to play bass that badly, then maybe they should instead. I was fortunate to hear this band many times. Fig and Rhodes had a perfect pocket synergy that propelled the arraignments and put down that foundation for Bonamassa's solos - all four where always on point; it was something special. There where places where the four of them would go to the next level - it was four guys soloing and riffing off of each other with complete freedom, confidence, and trust. Those moments stopped being music and became poetry in sound. What a blessing to have heard all that.
Mr. Rhodes passed in 2023 and Reese Wynans retired at the end of 2025. https://is.gd/2CyDEa Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convictions at February 11, 2026 12:37 AM (8ZVmQ) 260
From my extensive experience watching Mannix, Barnaby Jones, Cannon, Columbo, Rockford, etc, etc, this ain't how you do a proper kidnapping. First, after you snatch the victim, you take a photo of them, bound and gagged, usually in a chair. You put a copy of that day's newspaper front page right there as proof they're alive and kicking. Then, you have to a proper ransom note via cutting and pasting letters out of magazine articles, and send it right away to the family. The first thing you say is no cops, no media, or the victim gets it. Then you demand payment, always in small, unmarked bills. And you do that by having the family drive to some phone booth at some gas station in the seedy part of town, wait for a call, and then you send them on some convoluted trek all over the place, stopping at phone booths several times, and finally have them put the bag with the money in some remote spot out in the desert somewhere. If you ask me, coming from someone who played with a shitload of bass players, I say they fall into 3 groups
1. You got the dudes that are up front. Their playing is unmistakable, completely critical to the sound of the band, and almost unreplaceable. Geddy lee, Steve harris, lemmy, Marcus Grosskopf (helloween) are some that come to mind. 2. Very talented- always in the pocket, puts up a wall of sound, great bass player, but can be replaced by another solid player. 3. Wallpaper. Blink and you would miss him. A bass player in the academic sense, he wears a bass, and is going boom boom boom somewhere in the back. Easily replaced, and usually always an improvement when he is. If sufficient time and manpower is devoted to a specific crime, given the amount of surveillance and digital “footprint” virtually everyone has, it would be almost impossible to get away with a crime. It they really, really want your ass, they will find you.
100 years ago, even photographs of perps and suspects were still kind of a novelty. Fingerprints were just starting to be a thing. During a chase, the Sheriff would have to let off, if you made it across the county line. Moving to a different state, assuming a new identity, wasn’t exactly trivial but it was doable. Now? They want everyone tagged and bagged and inventoried, so to speak. Catalogued. License plate readers, retinal scans. DNA. Facial recognition, gait analysis, voice, you name it. Probably scanning brain waves by now. Posted by: Common Tater at February 11, 2026 01:05 AM (Zo4ys) 283

Maybe we are overthinking this, You want to call the target, not have the target call you. You are a criminal, who is engaged in a kidnapping, which could be a capital offense. So what harm in committing another crime? Simply go to a mall, and mug some schlub for his phone. Stick a gun in his/her ribs. "I need your phone, unlocked, to make a call. I will make my call, and abandon the phone. You will get it back, eventually."

As of 2018, there were still about 100,000 pay phones in use in the US. There is no longer any legal requirement for phone companies to operate them, and all the major carriers dropped them, so all that's left is other private outfits that want to maintain them. I was thinking of that, steal or otherwise commandeer somebody else's phone, so random one somewhere. The trouble with that, is you expose yourself to more things that can identify you or otherwise go wrong. If you stick somebody up at gunpoint for his phone, you're gonna leave evidence of some sort, even if you're willing to kill the victim. And that makes a murder you've just committed. I remember an old crime drama on TV where the cops track down a landline phone to find another phone that had been “acoustically coupled” (with duct tape) to another phone (just putting the mouthpiece of one handset to the earpiece of the other, etc.) so when they got to that location the caller was somewhere else, and had already hung up. I suppose you could do that with a sequence of burner phones. What do you think?

I got laid off from Collins Radio as part of the financial fiasco that led to Art losing control of the company and it being absorbed into what wss then North American Rockwell. What triggered it was "reach exceeding grasp". Collins built radios, yes, but also microwave and carrier comm equipment AND mini-computers. Everybody remembers DEC minis, but Collins 8300 series were a close second in sales..Art had this vision for a big "mainframe" computer and set about designing it. He played some financial.games, like capitalizing development costs, which, when the C-system (its name) didn't ship on time, caused the board to replace him and sell the company to NA Rockwell. In the lead up to this, the company did the usual, shed employees and their associated cost. "10% across the board" went on for almost 2 months before they got around to me. There were 17 engineers and tech and a manager and secretary in the dept when I joined. After I left, they had one more layoff and were down to 8 people including the manager with no secretary. Good evening ladies & gentlemen. I am late checking on the world of Morons due to online shopping for my summer clothes. Which I just felt like doing because I was a bit productive today, not a lot or enough to brag about.
I have had very little energy today because I woke at 0300 for 90min of lying in bed and being irritated. This typically indicates stress, and we've had a stressful past week and now the baby girl has a cold. Bless her, due to her siblings her immune system is going to be fantastic. However I hate it when babies are sick because my nurse brain spins through stuff that probably won't happen and I wake at 3am. To make things more wonky I had an earwig of the Sultan's of Swing at 3am (since T Rex brought up Dire Straits). I don't know why. I like them but don't listen to them a lot except in the summers on the deck. Finally I got that off my mind with another song, read a bit, and went back to sleep. I got sleep but this always irritates me and casts a spell on me for part of the rest of the day. On the bright side the weather is going to get wetter, with added snowpack in the mountains and maybe snow here next week. The C-system was far ahead of its time, and that produced all the delay. It was a distributed processor system with individual computing sub-sections that could be physically separated and connected by a counter rotating ring packet data path on coax. In 1969. The concept didn't show up again until the late '90s with SONET. I never formally met Art, but he did stick his head in a meeting on a military RFP that I was giving the presentation on. Sat in the back for about 20 minutes, then disappeared. EJ (my boss) told me who it was later. At the time I had no.idea who it was. When Collins Radio was a much smaller company, Art ha established a tradition of handing out turkeys at Thanksgiving. By the time I got there the company was way to.large for this, but he gave every employee a $10 check (which would buy a good sized bird back them, out of his own, personal (not company) account. Regarding bass players, in my non-professional opinion, their beat is the one I dance to, or the down beat. And, in my primitive thinking, they lead the drummer.
I also dated a bass player before I moved West; and the one in the original Jethro Tull picked me out of a crowd one summer night (Jeffrey Hammond Hammond). I tend to like bass players but married an acoustic guitar guy (his hobby, but very good). He plays by ear, both piano and guitar. I took piano lessons for seven years and he can simply hear a song and sit down and play it. I endured years of practice, and my second piano teacher had rancid breath and whacked my hands with a wooden ruler now and then. I had to sometimes play with a pencil in my fingers.I was not fond of it but ok when left alone. I had one grand recital onstage, played it perfectly and informed my mother I was never doing that again. My husband taught me fun chords I like better. I need to go to bed and hope to sleep through the night. I want to get done with all of my inside stuff so I can play in the snow next week (I hope). Hope y'all are doing well. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram ---- Highly unlikely. Pay phones have unique numbers, like 9700 up. A long distance operator would recognize the called # as a payphone. Posted by: buddhaha at February 11, 2026 01:54 AM (wTg85) 325

I had a chance to peek inside a few of the engines. They seemed solid from I could see. The parts looked well made. Different engineering than a harley. Harleys use roller bearings for the rods, the indian has the babbitt bearings like a car. I don't really think it matters if indian sold out as long as parts stay available. Finally finished watching all the videos in the OP, though not all in the comments. Of course I still love Primus's "Wynonna's Big Brown Beaver." Did not care for "Overkill"; maybe Motörhead just isn't for me. Iron Maiden's "Fear Of The Dark" was a close miss; I could see the appeal, and I appreciated the technical skill in each aspect both individually and in combination, but the song just didn't tickle my brain right. And Ralph's Banjo Special was a big miss, because (IMO) music without vocals needs context to lend it emotional weight, and I had no connection to anything that was going on there.

(I do not actually know if it was cheap; I have no personal financial transactions in the '90s to base that on, just supposition based on people with money preferring to smell good.)

One of the people I smoked it with, was allergic to belladonna and was hospitalized shortly after smoking it. I've wondered ever since, if there was some factor other than breeding involved. Posted by: JQ at February 11, 2026 02:32 AM (rdVOm) 357

Posted by: JQ at February 11, 2026 02:35 AM (rdVOm) The other thing is the crap weed from years ago had seeds, lots of seeds. Thats from slobs not killing off the male plants in time, and there were always more male than female plants for some reason. Once they pollinate the female plants the females start making seeds and stop growing buds, or the basically the buds stop growing. Friends of mine that had large females years ago ended up with super weed, not the commercial crap that was around back then. We had shit from california one time that was off the charts, because the growers knew their shit. Its not like this super weed is new, its just waaaay more common now. Breeding definitely has improved and growers are constantly coming up with new strains. It most likely is definitely improved, but its much closer to shit that was grown the right way years ago compared to the crap. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at February 11, 2026 02:45 AM (snZF9) 364
I learned a long time ago, that weed was dioecious & male plants were ripped out with extreme prejudice, LOL. But didn't know anyone personally what grew.
Still-- the *freshness* angle makes a lot of sense. Now that one can just go to a store instead of making a few calls and driving across town and hoping to buy some stuff that was smuggled from who knows where, who knows when... Posted by: JQ at February 11, 2026 02:53 AM (rdVOm) 365

Lear jets typically cruise at altitudes around 41,000 to 51,000 feet, depending on the specific model and flight conditions.
