And I will repeat this again. The British Museum has a new exhibit running until May 4th about an aspect of Japan. Namely they say half of the Samurai were female. Now who is doing cultural imperialism again? Posted by: Anna Puma "Samurai" as in katanas and lacquered armor? Or "samurai" as in the social class? The former is dumb on its face, and the museum curator should commit seppuku forthwith. The latter might be true in an Obi-Wan Kenobi sort of way..... was a samurai's wife given the same deference as her husband by the underclasses? Posted by: mikeski at February 09, 2026 07:20 PM (VHUov) Well, they're probably confusing things a bit with the naginata, which was a Japanese noble woman's weapon. If the town or castle was over taken, the noble women were expected to fight. And, in fact, they trained on the use of the weapon. If you saw the recent remake of "Shogun", you saw the noble women using it when the castle was over-run. Posted by: naturalfake at February 09, 2026 07:33 PM (iJfKG) 8

There were women samurai.
They guarded the Women's quarters of castles & large estates. At places like Hakone, were everyone was searched before being allowed to proceed ... men searched men & women (samurai) searched women. Did women fight on the battle field? A few, especially archers. But mostly women samurai were last line of defense of the home / estate. During the last battles of the Meiji restoration, pretty much the rebel male samurai were dead. So the last charges against the new Imperial forces were women. Soon they were dead too. I tried a version of Pete Bog's spare ribs that CBD posted Sunday morning. A loosely-based version, but used the Stubb's spicy BBQ sauce as a base, lots of ginger and garlic, home-brew five spice, honey, soy sauce, a dollop of plum jam (no plum sauce avail in micro-town grocery) and cooking sherry. Braised and then finished in the oven. Pete Bog's looked better, but these were pretty danged good. Anyway, the photo was inspirational!

Canadian scientists once accidentally released an experimental duck/penguin hybrid , known as the "puck", into the wild. It's prolificness and public complaint lead the Mounties to declare a year round open season to eliminate the mephitic menace from the skies over Montreal and other major Canadian cities. The campaign's slogan, "Get the puck outa here", was enthusiastically taken up by the besieged residents.
The reason for the creation of this bizarre hybrid are still unknown, as Penguin Facts' inquiries to the Canadian scientists were met with the cryptic response "Take off, you hoser". Posted by: Penguin Facts at February 09, 2026 08:22 PM (vFG9F) 116

Two interviews stand out to me. 1.) A bourgeois Afghan shopkeeper lamenting that once these Russian troops leave, nobody will be left to buy the Western goods he stocks in his store. 2.) That's the whole idea. Accelerate at 1g. Then, roughly half way, flip around, and decelerate at 1g, maintaining nice "artificial gravity" the whole time. With chemical propellants this is impossible. However, with nuclear fusion engines, the physics works, it's just the engineering is far beyond anything we're capable of. There's a few fusion reactions that produce mostly charged particles as products, which could be steered by EM fields, which would act as the thrust plate to push the exhaust against. G-d only knows why the 22yo was killed. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough, it bleeds, so it'll lead.
RIP, in any event. 22yo. *shakes head* Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at February 09, 2026 09:20 PM (BI5O2) 186
In college, being an idiot, I went with friends & cross country skied from one canyon to another. They knew darn well I was not as experienced as they were, but if I was asked to go somewhere I said yes. I had cross country skied many times before, but mostly to enjoy fresh air & wine & goof around getting exercise.
The top photo spine looks almost as bad...twice as wide. Not as high at 10k feet, however high enough to die if you slipped and fell down either side. Only wide enough to follow the tracks made ahead of you. I did not dare look down on either side of that path once we got to that part, which was about 100yds across. I think we got to someone's cabin (this is how I rolled, as I was not into details) about 4pm. Could have been a serial killers's cabin; but I knew my apt mates well & they generally took care of me. I remember changing into dry clothing & collapsing in front of the fireplace til the next day. No bed, the floor and a pillow and blanket are fine, thanks. I don't recall eating dinner. We drove home the next morning & did not return to where we started that adventure. I was thankful for that small mercy and being alive. I was once one crazy college girl. I didn't see a cat or mouse in the potato but a hippo lying down on his knees.
Granted I don't know if hippos even lie down like this or not. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at February 09, 2026 09:30 PM (WONhk) 188
As pointed out in many authoritative YouTube videos, the unreleased audio and film from the Moon landings contain warnings from the races who had bases up there millennia before the pyramids were built. We were told not to come back, to stick to our own world. Musk knows about this. The whole "going to Mars" thing is just an op to keep his wealth growing.
I think the reason we're not respected is we call our planet the Earth (dirt, land) and we call our moon the Moon and we call our sun the Sun. (It's like how primitive tribes have a word for their people which basically translates to The People.) Even SF only has us using words like Terra, Luna, and Sol. Yeah, Latiny; real creative species. The United Civilized Peoples of the Universe have a name for us. It translates to "Morons." Naturally. https://bit.ly/exploring-the-foreword Posted by: mindful webworker - mind, the final frontier at February 09, 2026 09:30 PM (kqXjy) 189
I am not even sure what to call this. Funny.
Count Dankula: https://youtu.be/pr89Tr4COac? si=0P14CwEhSjM8NluU Posted by: Aetius451AD work phone at February 09, 2026 09:13 PM (zZu0s) Count Dankula was arrested for a hate crime because he taught his pug to give the Roman salute and then posted it. Then he was fined by the Scottish courts, and he told them he wouldn't pay, and so he started calling them once a week for the cops to come pick him up. Eventually they asked him to stop Posted by: Kindltot at February 09, 2026 09:33 PM (rbvCR) 190
According to the post article they said it might be a murder suicide thing as he had life threatening stab wounds as well.

==== The world was different then... Posted by: runner at February 09, 2026 09:34 PM (g47mK) ..................................... Indeed it was...and a lot of fun! I look back and at least twice think these two apt mates, older male grad students with girlfriends and other friends thought,"Let's see if THIS will kill her!" All I know is that ski trip and later a hike, that should be with a ranger in a National Park due to difficulty and the chance of getting lost, but, nooooooooooo, they knew the back way! They could have killed me, age 20yrs. The hike in a National Park included, but it was not all, climbing down a 40' "chimney." I watched one guy, then I came down with them encouraging me (I guess first guy could have sort of broken my fall), and the other one coming after me. Yay! Continued hiking and trusting these nitwits. Did not think much about the insanity at the time. Watch this! You can do it! And I did. I would never advise it for anyone now that I am grown and normal. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at February 09, 2026 09:50 PM (WONhk) 196
Sigh
Both granddaughters are now fast asleep, our first time having both of them for a sleepover. Why on a weeknight? Because their Mom is having morning sickness due to #3 being on the way, she has an early dr. Appt with her OB, so we said "we'll take the kids, so you can get a good sleep." God is good. how woke is “The Expanse”?
Posted by: NemoMeImpuneLacessit at February 09, 2026 10:12 PM (dhHpw) First couple of seasons are good. It went bad very abruptly (exactly the same time as one of the actors got me tood and they immediately killed him in the show.) He may be an asshole, but the difference after that was stark. Finished Landman last night.
Jacob Lofland is a great young actor. He was Neckbone in "Mud," an excellent movie about boys being raised well by men. He was also in one of the Justified seasons, the one with the execrable Michael Rappaport. Posted by: Pug Mahon, Rock 'n' Roll Martian at February 09, 2026 10:20 PM (0aYVJ) 210
