Mrs. BD and I attended a meeting last night given by this IDF reservist organization:
https://www.miluimnikim.org.il/eng Even though we're already aware of the situation here, listening to top ranking combat officers discussing it in great detail is a bit depressing. Anyway, one of the things which they presented was this short clip of close quarters combat in Gaza: https://youtu.be/TN5Of7kxb2Y It's not gory. We found it gut-wrenching, especially when we know so many people who went through this - including those no longer with us. Go bankrupt faster, you hacks. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at February 09, 2026 05:21 AM (O7YUW) Since a typical decent performing model (with a metric based on how often they get things wrong or hallucinate) needing 90GB or more of memory to perform above a snail's pace in token speed, I'd say they could work a lot on efficiency, no doubt. I don't know of many more applications, besides large-scale 8K video editing or heavy CAD work which need 128 GB of RAM (and more) just to function properly. If they can't fix that then what's going to be needed is a new, cheaper, way to produce high speed memory or start using those huge wafer-scale CPUs and leave RAM out of it as much as possible. Posted by: m at February 09, 2026 06:04 AM (+YA9H) Nah, we just say the remote (actually the chip in the TV or cable box) 'saved' my favorites. Same thing really. We're anthropomorphizing AI because it can talk to us, and converse with us, like talking animals on TV - it's meant to be human-like. We'll do the same with robotics one day when they are as much as part of the family as the cat or dog, I'm sure. Posted by: SpeakingOf at February 09, 2026 06:11 AM (6ydKt) 94

>>Is it anthropomorphizing AI to about "AI remembering"? As an example, if I ask it to generate a UI, I'll give it parameters, look and feel, etc. as I ask it to tweet things, it will often deviate from the baseline, changing, for example the entire look and feel of the UI. AI is really good at creating a baseline scaffold that you can then tweak and develop. It's terrible at holding the context over a large code base. So I've taken to just having it work on small chunks and generating summaries that can then be picked up in future sessions. Posted by: Thomas Bender at February 09, 2026 06:15 AM (Pv/IO) 99

AI is great for culling and summarizing massive amounts of data when given an objective request. But it has no spirit, no soul, no memory, to retain or simulate the human condition. It is a highly advanced language engine with access to a massive storage of data.

Now we've finally built a machine that can talk to us intelligently. We're moving past talking animals and talking cars in movies and shows to getting the real thing. Eventually it will be normal to have an AI companion or Robot with us throughout our lives. Well, maybe not us, but today's children and their children will certainly experience it. The other thing you can do to try to maintain the plot with AI, is have an extensive planning phase before you ask it to build.
I often use one ai to create the scaffold and another ai to make the tweaks. You can use terminal ai agents that have a plan build function, you put it in plan mode, revise and review the changes, then put it in build mode once you are satisfied. And as always, markdown summaries are your friend. Posted by: Thomas Bender at February 09, 2026 06:30 AM (Pv/IO) 117

The idea that someone should pay thousands of dollars to attend what is generally the worst game in postseason is mildly insulting.
