Gun Thread: SportsBall Edition!

super bowl 2026 sm scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Annual SportsBall Edition? Yep, it's time once again to heap well-deserved derision upon the NFL and their woke bullshit. As you might have surmised, Weasel are not a fan. Having said that, please feel free to discuss the big matchup and/or your deepest and innermost feelings regarding the NFL in the comments tonight.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of normalcy that is because it occurs to me I have not said enough bad things about the NFL and their planned retarded bullshit halftime show featuring weirdos, freaks and America haters. I wish we had an alternative.

But Weasel, we do! We do have an alternative! TPUSA saves the day. Go America!

020826 TPUSA AAHS scaled.jpg

Turning Point USA recently announced more details for its "All American Halftime Show," which will be airing Sunday, February 8, around 8 p.m. Eastern time.

The All American Halftime Show will be a unique, patriotic event proudly celebrating American culture, freedom, and faith. The show will feature musical performances from Kid Rock, Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett.

This exclusive halftime performance can be streamed on Turning Point USA social media channels, including YouTube, X, and Rumble. In addition to social media, the program will air on partner platforms, including Daily Wire+, Real America’s Voice, TBN, CHARGE!, The National News Desk, NTD.com, and OAN News.

"The All-American Halftime Show is an opportunity for all Americans to enjoy a halftime show with no agenda other than to celebrate faith, family, and freedom" Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet said of the halftime show. "We set out to provide an entertainment option that will be fun, excellent, and exciting for the entire family while millions are gathered together for the big game. These performers will deliver exactly that, and we can't wait to watch the incredible show they're about to put on. We know millions around the country will be watching too."

For updates and more information on The All American Halftime Show, please visit the event's website and select your favorite outlet (e.g. OAN News) to stream the content.

Enjoy!

Once you've mastered the cleaning of an AR, you're qualified to move along to more complex jobs such as this.

Cigar of the Week

A good cigar deserves a good cigar room, and in the interest of better utilizing space, can be combined with a gun room. Winning!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

Suppressors can also change the tone/pitch of the shot. Ammo selection can eliminate the supersonic crack of the bullet breaking the sound barrier if you choose subsonic ammo (pistol calibers usually). If your suppressor is long enough, it can reduce or eliminate muzzle flash. Muzzle flash is usually the easiest thing for someone to spot. Sound, especially in urban settings, is much harder to detect because of echoing and ambient noise (traffic, construction, people talking, etc.).

I don't know. Is indifference a feeling. Whatever anger I once had at the woke garbage pushed by the NFL, has now morphed into indifference. I just don't care. I don't watch, I move on with other interests I have. Maybe if the Steelers get back to the SB, I might watch but who knows. Apathy is worse than anger for pro sports teams and leagues. Anger shows care. Apathy doesn't.

47 I have a .45 can that, while it does make the shot hearing safe, it is not silent. But, it does attenuate the sound curve so that the noise is not instantly recognizable as a gun shot. When I use it with SS .300acc, rather than a rifle shot it sounds like maybe I dropped a hammer on my deck. You hear something, but you don't know what it is.

66 A neighbor of mine, a Trump supporter who retired here from Long Island, decided to get a carry permit as soon as he established residency (Brunswick County, NC). The way it works is you apply and pay online, then the sheriff's office calls you in a month or so and tells you to come in and pick up the permit (once they've done the background checks). My neighbor mistakenly thought they were going to mail the permit to him, so when he got a call to come to the sheriff's office, he got really anxious. Did he do something wrong, he wondered. Were they going to arrest him? Anyway, he went there, told him who he was and asked if he had dome something wrong about the permit. The deputy at the desk said, "No, just wanted you to come in and pick it up". So, he handed the permit to my neighbor, who stood there staring at it. The deputy asked, "Is anything wrong?" And when my neighbor didn't immediately reply, the deputy finally laughed and said, "Ohhh, you're from up north, aren't you?"

68 And I know we don't do politics here but, ummm, Virginia is not playing nice. Its hard to tell what is going on with the big bad bill - apparently some of the worst aspects of it were removed from the Senate bill, but they all exist in the House of Delegates bill. Hard to say how that will play out.

But I've got to have an ex-fil plan. blaster acres is in the Free State of Florida so there is a place to take the stuff that will end up being non-compliant. Current best case is that ARs and large format pistols are out. Worst case is all semi-autos and all mags over 10 rounds are out. Yes of course all of that is unconstitutional but it will take court cases to get there.

That would leave lever, bolties, revolvers, and pump shotguns as Virginia guns.

This sucks.

I did not have much luck zeroing my scope using a bore laser.
The best way I found is to set the target up 50 yards from you and remove the bolt from the rifle.
Look through the bore until you see the target. Then raise your head up and look at where the reticle is and make the necessary adjustments on the scope until the reticle is on the target.

When that is done, put the bolt back in and put a shot on the target and make adjustments on the scope until you are hitting where the reticle is aiming.

Also check out You Tube videos, there are plenty that will help you with zeroing.

76 My uncle was in the US Infantry in the ETO and that was one thing that kind of pissed him off. He said the Wehrmacht had high quality rifle powder in their ammunition and it was extremely difficult to determine where small arms fire was coming from. Almost no smoke whatsoever. And the Germans were really good at camouflage.

Conversely American troops were issued a very dirty ammunition that made lots of smoke. It is true that quantity has a quality all its own but I don’t believe he found that very comforting.

81 For my first trip to the range in over a month, I took a couple of new toys to try them out. First up, a .32 ACP Walther PPK SD (featuring a factory threaded barrel) and a SilencerCo SPECTRE 9 suppressor. Because the suppressor blocks your sight picture, you get "minute of man" accuracy at the 5-10 yard range. With a suppressor, this is definitely a range toy, even if it is a cool-looking one. The other is a reproduction DeLisle Commando Carbine, a Lee-Enfield Mark III* converted to .45 ACP, modified to take a 1911 magazine using a special magazine release, and a large integral suppressor. Made by US Armament Manufacturing to the original plans, the DeLisle is surprisingly heavy because of the suppressor's all steel construction. Reputed as one of the quietest firearms ever, the DeLisle did not disappoint. .45 ACP is very quiet out of this thing, even though the tech is 80+ years old. This isn't cheap, but if you're interested in a reproduction of an extremely rare firearm that's also super quiet, you might want to look into picking one up even if you have to deal w/ NFA paperwork.

86 I believe I've mentioned here before the stepfather of one of my buddies when we were junior high/early high school age.

He'd let us smoke cigars and taught us how to shoot craps (we'd already picked up the rudiments of poker elsewhere). He'd also look the other way if we swiped the occasional shot of his bourbon.

Looking back on it, he was teaching us to be men.

Nowadays a guy like that would be thrown under the jail.

If he was a quack doctor who wanted to cut off our cocks and inject us with experimental hormones so we'd grow tits, however, he'd be praised.

I don't know how the world came to this.

Unrelated: Fetterman has come out in favor of the Voter ID act. I'm starting to think that guy might be an actual Democrat, not a communist. There was a time when "loyal opposition" was a thing.

I'm reading that housing in that part of the world (and going south on the Gulf Coast) is getting hammered due to the requirements for hurricane insurance forcing people out of places they can't afford the higher premiums for. Condos are getting crushed because recent HOA funding problems (remember the collapse of the condo tower in Miami?) forced HOAs to increase their monthly fees and send out costly special assessments to their members. Prices are getting crushed because of the glut of sellers and lack of buyers. Time might be on your side for now.

135 107 If Trump is followed by Vance with a similar ax-wielding agenda, NoVa could be nearly purged of the government-employed communists in 10 years or so. - Rodrigo Borgia

In addition to layoffs and firings, another thing I've been energetically pushing is to decentralize the federal government. Put the EPA in, say, Detroit, and Agriculture in Arkansas. Or at least send the bulk of the employees out to the sticks and let them communicate with skeletal management teams in Washington using the wonders of modern technology. You'll then see a lot of bureaucrats and their camp followers retiring early or finding other jobs. Plus, the federal government would save a lot of money; its agencies and bureaus pay very high rent in D.C.

Got to be careful, though, to distribute the bureaucrats widely, or centralize them in donk strongholds that are permanently Democrat anyway. We don't want to send them to places where they can swing an otherwise red state blue (vide Virginia).

136 50 Good evening all. I have a novice question that I hope to get some guidance on. I recently purchased a Ruger 10/22 with a scope. Now I have to sight in the rifle and I'm thinking a laser bore sighting kit may help me along. Any suggestions will be appreciated. TIA.
Posted by: Rufus T. Firefly
======
First check the scope mount for proper torquing of screws and the mount. As Weasel says, wobbly shit no bueno.

A laser sighter is probably going to be a waste of money for a 22 LR. Figure out whether you want a 25 yd or 50 yd zero and shoot the ammo that you will normally use from a bag or some other sort of rest.

Correct the scope accordingly.

A bore collimator, if you can figure out how to use one, is a better bet in most cases of a scoped rifle than a laser bore sighter.

Bolt actions, where you can remove the whole bolt, simply use looking down the bore to rough sight in the firearm before taking it to the range.

150 Watching Zulu Dawn, biggest debacle of the British army maybe
Posted by: Skip

I nominate the 1941-42 Malaya Campaign and the subsequent Fall of Singapore as the worst defeat the British ever suffered. Nearly 140,000 British, Indian, and Australian troops were lost, with some 100,000 plus spending the next 3.5 years as POWs at the tender mercies of the Japanese. To make things worse, they were defeated by a smaller, better trained, more mobile force that outfought and outmaneuvered them from the first day to the last. Singapore fell on February 15, 1942, just over two months after the campaign began.

I knew she'd do this, that she couldn't help it. Amber Glenn, first US openly LGBT skater, made a statement that she is skating at the Olympics for "the community," not the US.

If the US had balls they'd fire her and have her alternate skate. But they know she's a shoo-in for a medal, especially with Russia not here. So they won't.

She also said that coming out was what made her skating better. Like Will in Stranger Things, it's her superpower! The gay community/mafia is like the Borg. Only the Borg matters. Assimilate. Resistance is futile.

162 Laser boresighters in general rely on either laser cartridges that fit inside the chamber or those that use arbors to fit at the end of the muzzle. Both rely on absolute bore concentricity and proper placement. The cheaper cartridge types can have issues where you actually need to rotate the bore cartridge about 1/4 of a turn, recheck, then another 1/4 of a turn, recheck, etc. Arbor types are only as good as the arbor hold on the bore itself. The ones relying on magnets to hold to the bore are a better than the plastic multi all in one laser boresighter kit with crappy arbors. But again, centering properly is crucial. And also avoiding damaging the barrel crown as that will cause much anguish accuracy wise if damaged. Add in muzzle breaks and other toys, the arbor type is unusable.

For scopes, a collimator works better if you can fix it to the actual bore and it can help also center the scope's horizontal and vertical axis relative to the bore. Recent years, those have become scarcer.

"When I chose to utilize one of the amazing things about the United States of America (Freedom of speech) to convey how I feel as an athlete competing for Team USA in a troubling time for many Americans I am now receiving a scary amount of hate / threats for simply using my voice WHEN ASKED about how I feel.

Good plan. Spend some time in Ybor City. My first introduction was early 90's. Took Little there a couple years ago and turned him on to Columbia - a Cuban/Spanish restaurant that has existed at that spot since 1905. He's been to just about all of their locations, except for maybe the one at Tampa airport. The rest of the town peaked around the early 2000's, but that could just be my old and biased opinion...

239 And the BAR was stupid. 20 rounds? What?
Posted by: Are you sure about this sir? at February 08, 2026 08:21 PM (U/7CP)

For the time when it was introduced (191, the 20 rounds in the BAR was a pretty good weapon. In a time when a bolt action rifle was the standard arm of the infantry, 20 rounds of automatic fire in a package under 20 pounds was pretty good to have. By the start of WWII, the BAR wasn't the king of the battlefield anymore. By 1944, when the US Army entered combat in very large numbers, the BAR was completely outclassed by the MG34 and MG42. The BAR remained competitive in the Pacific because the Japanese didn't have anywhere near the number automatic weapons the Germans did. The Japanese MGs were mostly magazine fed and didn't use belts.

Music well beyond wholesome into corny territory. And the group behind Up With People was nigh unto a cult.

Choke off the SB ad revenue. Year after that? Same thing, with bigger stars, scheduled to start five minutes after SB kickoff. Create an audience drought for SB ads...

He was bad before the Denver game - that 1st half crystallized his badness (he was actually better in the 2nd half b/c he ran).

And the sack fumble just to be completely awful...I wish Stidham had made it and his coach had let him just 3 and out all game (vs that fumble that gave NE the game)...it would have been more interesting to have 2 QBs who were both just planning to game manage the run...we could be 0-0 then...

Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at February 08, 2026 09:42 PM (Gpi0r)

Seattle played dirty and thought they had the game in hand...worst thing to do is to take a dejected, de-energized team and piss them off. All that adrenaline and emotion gets they hyped to play and stick it to you. I mean, I'd say it's 50-50 if NE pulls a comeback off b/c it only requires Maye to play like a normal QB vs wookie-ass...

Although it will be hard at the 1...maybe the punter should be MVP...

457 Actually, it could, depending on the age of the sprinkler. The old ones had wax that melted to release the valve. The new ones are a bit more sensitive. But the water that comes out is nasty, black and stinky, not the nice cl a shower they always show. It is disgusting.
Posted by: tcn in AK at February 08, 2026 09:37 PM (I40wl)

You could get one sprinkler head to go off with a lighter, but not every one in an office building, as is so often depicted. That would make a good comedy scene, though. The hero holds up his lighter, and for his trouble only gets himself drenched with filthy water, as the villains point and laugh.
