Snowburbs26.jpg

The burbs are great after a big snow. Especially when the temperature doesn't skyrocket afterward and the snow sticks around for a few weeks. My little town does a good job of clearing the roads, so driving is effortless, and the pleasure of a white wonderland is clear to see without having to slog through a big mess.

NYC is a different animal entirely, and they are welcome to their garbage-strewn streets and slush mountains. I'll take the pristine (for now) suburbs any day over 3:00AM Thai takeout and marijuana delivery.

A fish is swimming out in a lake, when he sees a fly flitting around, 3 feet above the water. The fish thinks to himself, "If that fly comes down about 5 inches, I can eat it!", so he sits and waits.

A bear sees the fish watching the fly and thinks to himself, "When that fly comes down a few inches, that fish is going to jump up and try to eat it. When that happens, I'm going to swipe that fish onto land and eat it."

A hunter eating a sandwich sees the bear watching the fish watching the fly, and thinks to himself, "When that fly lowers, the fish is going to jump up to get it, and that bear is going to try and eat that fish. When that happens, I'm going to shoot the bear and stuff him for my den," so he puts down his sandwich, and readies his gun.

A mouse is sitting there watching the hunter, watching the bear, watching the fish, watching the fly, and thinks to himself, "When that fish goes for the fly and the bear goes for the fish, and the hunter tries too shoot the bear, I'm going to go and eat his sandwich." so he sits and waits, keeping a watchful eye on the hunter and his sandwich.

A cat in the bushes sees the mouse watching the hunter watching the bear watching the fish watching the fly, and thinks "When that fly lowers 5 inches, the fish is going to try and eat it, then the bear is going to eat the fish, then that hunter is going to shoot the bear, then that mouse is going to try and eat the sandwich. When that happens, I'm going to eat that mouse." so he sits and waits. watching the mouse intently.

After a few tense minutes, the fly finally lowers itself.

The fish jumps out of the water, and catches the fly in it's mouth a split second before the bear swipes the fish onto land and begins to devour it, shortly before being shot in the face by the hunter, while the mouse lunges for the sandwich. The cat sees the action springing right in front of him, so he books it out of the bushes making a bee line for the mouse, but misses it completely, and falls face first into the lake.

Moral of the story; when a fly comes down 5 inches, a pussy gets wet.

Researchers 'surprised' by the brain benefits of cannabis usage in adults over 40

Pass the pot to Grandma — her brain might thank you.

A new study is challenging long-held assumptions about cannabis, finding that middle-aged and older adults who use the drug may actually see some brain and cognitive benefits.

The twist comes as cannabis use is climbing among older Americans. Research shows that nearly 1 in 5 people ages 50 to 64 reported using marijuana in the past year, along with 5.9% of those 65 and older.

Biochemical research is mostly bullshit: filled with weasel words and ass-covering nonsense. If marijuana was that wonderful, we would have figured it out long ago.

If you've never spent a lot of time in NYC, then you might now be aware of how big the rat population is. You get a taste of it everytime the subway tunnels flood. But, nothing's more appetizing to a population of rats than rising temperatures and free food in the winter time.

57 Well, we did our good deed of the day today. We are paying for a young lady (junior high) who we have known since before she was born to go to a STEM camp this summer. She was nominated by one of her teachers, and it is a leadership program. She will be able to stay on campus at a local college for a week.

She is a great kid. Her mom has been Rebecca's massage therapist for about 15 years now; her husband - this young lady's father - died very unexpectedly 10 years ago, so they live on one income.

They didn't know how they would be able to afford to pay for her to attend this program. Since we are in a position to help out these ladies who are very much like family to us, we told them that if they weren't able to secure a scholarship we would pick up the cost so that this young lady could attend this program.

What a joy to be able to do this for such a wonderful young lady! She is very excited, and we are excited for her. And we are so grateful that we are able to help make this possible for her ♥️♥️♥️

68 I enjoyed the TP "halftime" show, with two caveats:
1) Fire the guy on the sound board. The vocals were muddy, and more often than not, the backup vocals/ instruments were on top.
2)They lied about the timing. They promised that it would be synced with the game, but when I switched back to the game, it was already at 14:03.
It was pretty much amateur hour. Each act was internally good, except for the aforementioned sound issues, but the timing leading from one performance to the next wasn't on. It was obvious that they didn't rehearse getting on and off.

Ecoflow has a smart circuit box along with enough scalable battery capacity to run a substantial house up to about a week if you wish. Costco has some of their products or you can order them online or even Ebay as Ecoflow has a refurbished storefront on Ebay.

They also have the smaller and more portable types. And portable solar cells.

Jackery does okay with the smaller batteries as does Bluetti and both also sell portable solar cells for recharging.

A simple gas/propane generator can also ease issues with the battery generators. If you do have electronics or electronics heavy appliances, the line sags and surges from normal gas/propane/nat gas generators (not inverter types) can damage those. Using the generator to charge one of the battery generators avoids that problem if you run items off of that.

E.g. our pellet stove requires about 300 watts to ignite and about 100 watts per hour for fan and feeding pellets. But since computerized control, requires pure sine wave electricity to keep it running. Battery generators generate sine wave supply that it needs.

Good luck with your search. For the tax credit though get even a few solar cells with your battery system.

Ecoflow's smart circuit box, they claim you can basically run line power to it and it will charge the batteries (top them off) and instantly switch to battery power when you get line outages or even sags. Basically like a large scale uninterruptible power source.

Key factor is how long they last and some report having install problems with the smart circuit board. I like Ecoflow because it is scalable and you can add batteries as your budget allows.

I still have mostly dumb appliances or ones that I don't need in an outage but as those wear out, I am looking at the Ecoflow system for that reason.

Most of the new house wide battery systems allow charging by solar cells, generators, or line power to keep topped up.

I have a small Ryobi battery generator that uses their 40v yard batteries which are hot swappable and you can link one to another Ryobi unit as well. for the Pellet stove. Have a log burning Buck stove at the other fireplace.

The only way I can see such flying machines be approved for general use is to have all under central robotic control, and you hire them like a taxi or an Uber. The passenger has zero input into the flight controls. If contact with master control is lost, the onboard system must go into "safe descent" mode, and make a rapid but hopefully safe descent from cruise altitude to the nearest patch of open ground. And then shut down.

177 The only way I can see such flying machines be approved for general use is to have all under central robotic control, and you hire them like a taxi or an Uber. The passenger has zero input into the flight controls. If contact with master control is lost, the onboard system must go into "safe descent" mode, and make a rapid but hopefully safe descent from cruise altitude to the nearest patch of open ground. And then shut down.

I never smoked pot but always had friends and family who did. I knew a number of researchers who said that smoking pot made them more creative. Apparently, pot does kill brain cells (and the comments about psychosis and violence are legit) but also increases the connectivity of the surviving brain cells, which explains both a) increased creativity at first and b) the burnouts you remember who forgot just about everything.

Here in SW Wyoming we've had no snow and very
unseasonable weather. We've been able to grill a lot this winter.

The wildlife usually moves from the mountains to town starting in October.

Something is going to happen soon because the last two days the wildlife has moved into town.

Hopefully this a good sign, we need lots of snow to fill our reservoirs.

As long as the rotor remains attached to the aircraft, and continues to be free to rotate, you have lift. Forward motion through the air causes the rotor to spin, and the flight controls can be used. Look up the bensen Gyrocopter, which had an unpowered rotor, and an engine driving a pusher propellor, giving it forward motion.

The 17 and 23 round cartridges that came with the gun are now contreband. 250 The big problem with helicopter failures is altitude; they fly too.low.
Yes, with forward momentum, the rotor will "autorotate" and the helicopter will act like a plane with no.engine - it will."glide" and maybe you can find a golf course or something.
BUT... when the engine fail, the rotor stops. Now, you're a brick. If you can "get it into neutral " it will autorotate, eventually. If you're too close to the ground, the rotor never gets to enough rpm to actually have some lift.
Getting the machine into autorotation mode is part of helicopter pilot training, but if your under 500 ft with with 80 mph forward speed... Lower forward speed at the time of engine failure raises the necessary altitude.

They execute American tourists, we tactically nuke an entire city. Our job is to make terrorism so horrific that it becomes unthinkable to attack Americans."

Gabriel: "You have the power to cure all the world's diseases, but the price for this is that you must kill a single innocent child; could you kill that child, Stanley?"

Stanley: "No."

Gabriel: "You disappoint me; it's the greatest good."

Stanley: "Well, how about ten innocents?"

Gabriel: "Now you're getting it. How about a hundred? How about a thousand? Not to save the world, but to preserve our way of life?"

President's Analyst/1967: how little has changed.
"You want to be the great humanitarian? You want to save the world? Then take the gun. Because the only way you’re going to save the world is by killing the people who are trying to destroy it."

260 I liked The President's Analyst. In high school, I used a large movie rating guide that they had at the public library -- I forget the name, but it graded very carefully on a four-star scale where a typical popcorn flick was two stars, competent but not cinema -- and then mixed borrowing movies from them with renting from the video store. Made my own home double feature with that and Rustler's Rhapsody, two different kinds of surreal.

Tough one. I would have to go with tyrant. That was always a crowd pleaser. Was definitely fun to do. We did almost the whole album. We had a really great singer for a very short period, so we did dreamer deceiver and deceiver while we had him. We did victim of changes, but I hated that frigging song, so we used to rotate between that, the ripper, and isle of domination. But yeah, I have to go with tyrant as my fav. We did it consistently, and never removed it. I did it in a few other cover bands too. It was just that good.

SpaceX will have the first Moon base and it's much closer than most realize

Starship can carry the highest tonnage to space of anything ever built and it's fully reusable, which changes everything

Tesla Optimus robots could do most of the construction work, with minimal human intervention

Tesla already makes solar panels at scale, perfect for powering a lunar base

Even Tesla's Cybertruck could be adapted for lunar transport

When you factor in all the pieces working together, a Moon base isn't decades away...it's happening sooner than we think

Once established, the utility of a lunar outpost will scale exponentially, creating the foundation for humanity's permanent presence beyond Earth

303 Bing: How are the stranded Chinese astronauts doing?

The Chinese astronauts, members of the Shenzhou 21 mission, are currently stranded aboard the Tiangong space station without a reliable return craft. They are living on the station without a lifeboat, and the situation is expected to be temporary. China has a standby lifeboat available at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, which can be launched to the station as little as 8.5 days later. The Shenzhou 21 crew is due to return to Earth early next year, and the Shenzhou 22 spacecraft will be launched at an appropriate time in the future.

The astronauts are safe and the situation is being managed by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) to ensure their safety and the safety of the station's crew.

SpaceX is now shifting their priorities into building a Moon Base - doing so in less than a decade.

This proposal from the ISU involves converting a Starship into a lunar base, Skylab-style.

Starship’s ~1000m^ 3 of pressurized volume would result in a copious base.

This is one hell of a complex subject, and there is a lot of active research going on. I asked Grok "what is known about growing plants in Lunar and Martian environments".

It can and will have to be done for some actual sustained base on the Moon or Mars. The regolith can be used, but it will have to be "amended" big time. Organic material will have to be added, and you'll have to inoculate it with various bacteria and all that to get something suitable. That's where the current research is focusing, how to amend it.

And yes, human waste (with pathogens removed) would be some of the organic material needed to be added.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 10, 2026 02:57 AM (w6EFb)

331 And speaking of my new word for the evening, "regolith". - And I'm just going one after the other.

Toby Li@tobyliiiiiiiiii . 10h

Regarding GCR exposure mitigation, it is discovered that lunar regolith layered up to 45 g/cm2 is effective at shielding against heavy ions and decreasing the effective dose equivalent (EDE) (Blunier et al.).

Above 105 g/cm2, lunar regolith radiation shielding becomes more effective at a linear rate (Blunier et al.). However, with layers from 45 to 105 g/cm2, the ionizing radiation from GCRs interacting with the regolith shielding produces undesirable secondary particles (Blunier et al.).
Analysis from Akisheva and Gourinat (2021) shows that the addition of a 5 cm polyethylene layer reduces the generation of secondary particles, and that, at least of lunar regolith is required to meet the Jamestown Base radiation exposure baseline with this configuration.

332 cont

this configuration.
According to the findings of Akisheva and Gourinat (2021), a 40 cm thick 4.0 g/cm3 compacted lunar regolith will be utilized for GCR exposure mitigation and for greater habitat thermal insulation and lower heating power requirements, as further expanded in Section 6.3 (Akisheva & Gourinat).

The shielding requirements derived solely for GCRs are insufficient to protect the crew during intense SEP events.

In addition to the baseline habitat shielding described earlier, a SEP storm shelter is needed.

Akisheva and Gourinat (2021) indicate that such a shelter requires a minimum of 150 cm of compacted regolith at 2.7 g/cm3and lined with a 5cm polyethylene shelter in order to limit SPE-induced doses to the blood-forming organs below the short-term non-cancer limit of 250 mGy-Eq and remain within NASA’s 30-day effective dose limit of 250 mSv.

There is just about zero nitrogen on the Moon. And that's one of the biggies plants needs, N, P, and K. The P and K are there, but not too abundant and what's there is not in bioavailable form. So, we're going to have get the N there, and some P and K. Think in concentrated form.

The regolith itself will be a decent base to make soil, but it's going to have be amended big time, and it will take time.

A lunar greenhouse for the Moon base will probably start out as hydroponics. That's the start. You get that going, and then slowly start to amend the existing regolith, blending in the waste products and bacteria and all that.

Trucking up "potting soil" from earth, while it would be nice, would be terribly inefficient and expensive. Impossibly so.

351 >> I do not think humanity's future is in space.

Depends on just what you mean by future. Mammals like us have maybe 250 million years before Erf becomes inhospitable for us. That's also the chaotic time limit for the orbits of the solar system. "Anything could happen", some gravitational butterfly could've flapped its wings and earth gets ejected from the solar system. Not likely, but not impossible.

As the Sun slowly evolves, it gets hotter and hotter. Complex life will be impossible after maybe 800 million years, 1 billion tops.

Note all this happens well before the Sun becomes a red giant.

If we want human civilization to last 100, 000 years, maybe a few million years (there's all sorts of musing on just how low homo sapiens could last), we are going to have to go off planet.
