Everyone is on vacation in Wyoming and Cookie Milano has fallen for a local cowboy and spent the day with him without checking in with Tony. These landscapes are magnificent with the way they capture the light as it brings out the details of the land as well as the effect of distant mountains. It's a celebration of the wonder of creation. And while the people and their structures may be dwarfed, they are still at home with the grandeur. It's a pleasure to see such art.
I know the Hudson River School developed as way to celebrate the American landscape, and Hill was at least associated with that school. I do wonder if it was partly inspired by the Romantic poets, British and American, which established the aesthetic shone in the paintings like this. Not always overtly religious but certainly spiritual. It would have been interesting what Wordsworth or Shelly might have done with these American scenes. Speaking of Koreans...
Last night, I was flipping around on the TV, when I noticed that "Decision to Leave" was streaming on HULU. I realized that I hadn't seen "Decision to Leave", mostly cuz I was waiting for it to stream, so I decided to watch it, given that TJM is currently in the throes of Park Chan-Wook fever. It is a very well-directed, very well-acted, very tightly scripted, but...very Korean movie. And so because of that, whether or not you buy into the action and finale depends on if the motivations of the characters seem real or reasonable to you. This movie struck me almost from the get-go as Park Chan-Wook's version of Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo". Not the same story, but with elements from the same sort of neighborhood, a sort of highly romantic mystery surrounding a detective who's obsessed with a mysterious woman who in this case may have murdered her husband. At times, I got the feeling that although all the actors were great that they were playing "concepts" more than flesh and blood characters. Not a student of Korean mythology or whatever so I could be wrong about this. DtL feels like a 50s "woman's movie". Check it out. Posted by: naturalfake at February 12, 2026 10:27 AM (iJfKG) 227

I'm willing to put up with NBC, just to see the small smile on her face as she watches the ice dancers. She's so far gone she doesn't know what country anybody is from, or who wins, but she exclaims "Oh my!", and oohs and ahs at the spins and lifts. Her usually agitated frustration is briefly replaced by some pleasant connection deep in her lost memories. For that I am thankful.

I'm glad I didn't watch the introduction, since Ben Mankiewicz would have no doubt stressed that the screenplay was by Communist Dalton Trumbo - he was blacklisted, don't you know - but we're also asked to sympathize with the people who aid illegal immigrants, "which make the movie so relevant today." Since I didn't know the context, it made for compelling viewing.

I haven't tried baiting bugs yet, but some recommend 'sugaring for moths,' smearing sweets around at night and seeing what comes for them. When I visited NE as a kid, there were giant moths, several species, very pretty, common outside and inside my grandmother's shack. It seemed like, back then, there were way more bugs than there are now. Every little town would have dense clouds of bugs around the central crossroads streetlamp. Don't see that anymore. Back in the 70s, I used to sometimes stop at a pizza shopin New City, NY. The guys working it were first generation Italian immigrants. They had a small TV in the kitchen and I noticed they watched Hogan's Hero reruns and laughed hysterically at it. So, once from home I ordered a pizza and gave the name "Klink". They kinda laughed it off and hung up the phone.
I showed up twenty minutes later and said "Pie for Klink". They were flustered and said they must have forgot the order. It was worth the twenty minute wait for the joke. They were very apologetic. Posted by: Pepino's Pizza And Pasta at February 12, 2026 10:53 AM (oftw2) 331
Or maybe, they accomplished what they intended and are now surging to other areas.
Which is exactly what Homan is saying. — What else is he going to say? Yeah all the terrorists on the streets are too much of a PIA so we decided to give them city back. Yea, I honestly believe Homan and Trump. It doesn't mean ICE is leaving MN. It means the surge they used because MN was resisting any cooperation with ICE is no longer needed because 1) they got most of the worst they were going after 2) MN is now doing more to cooperate which has been obvious if you have been watching the videos coming out of MN and 3) the resources are more urgently needed in other areas. Why are you always so invested in failure no matter what name you are using? Posted by: JackStraw at February 12, 2026 10:57 AM (viF8m) 355
For some people ICE would have to remain in MN in surge mode for eternity for it not to be a failure.
Posted by: Opinion fact at February 12, 2026 10:54 AM (cwGMH) Exactly. A "surge", by definition, has a beginning and an end. They got Minnesota to require the county cops to aid ICE in detaining criminal aliens, so they don't need as many ICE boots on the ground there. If Minnesota reneges, they can do a re-surge.
