Gardening, Home and Nature Thread, Feb. 7

amaryl 40.png

Some follow-up from last week with great photos, by 40 Miles North:

Would those be true Amaryllis? The pink ones?

Yes - the ones people call pink ladies.

More photos, including still-moist seeds (germinate faster than dry ones) and more information at the link.

salvia leu.png

Not sure what kind of sage that is.

I believe it's Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage) because the leaves are long and thin and a dull light green:

An impressive plant.

Often considered deer and rabbit resistant. Avoid ingestion.

This is not the sage you want to use in your Thanksgiving dressing.

Edible Gardening/Putting Things By

Hi Katy,

I hope all is well....Spring is "springing" in the PNW. Already 60 degree days in Feb. I hope no surprises as the hazelnut nut trees are blooming and pollen is flying...more later.
However, I have attached pictures of a grapefruit and lemon I grow in pots here in Oregon. They too are in full bloom. I take them out in the summer for the heat and full sun they can acquire, and then bring inside for the winter.
Without fail, they bloom the minute I bring them inside. These "inside blossoms" do not usually produce fruit, but our atrium/office sure smells good!

When I take them outside they bloom again...The Oro Blanco grapefruit produced 4 fruit this past December.....and the Meyers lemon has produced up to 25 fruit...perfect for Christmas margaritas!

Citrus are heavy feeders and require good drainage.....

Mike

WOW. Very impressive that you can grow citrus in the Northwest! Oro Blanco is a cross between a grapefruit and a pomelo. It is also grown outdoors in areas without enough summer heat to grow regular grapefruit. We get a little too much winter cold where we are, but it is grown in some nearby foothill areas.

2 Happy Saturday! Almost feels like Spring today, but I know it's going to freeze again.

4 From Boise area: lows 27-36 F, highs 48-55. Air stagnation advisory this week, due to end with probable rain Sun. night.

It's been warm enough to do garden work. Our 6 main beds are weeded, and dead mushy tomatoes have been composted. Bunchgrasses got cut down. Tulip, crocus/hyacinth, forsythia, and mini-day-lily areas were weeded too. Husband built braces for some apple tree branches, and we placed them.

The barn cat's automatic feeder was forcibly dis-assembled this week. Husband re-assembled it, and put a big flat rock atop it, then set out the trail camera - we spotted the raccoon culprit. Anyone have experience with a safe live trap, particularly how to know right at the moment it's set off? - if we trap our cat, we'll take him to the vet next morning for a checkup. If we trap the raccoon... it will not go well for that marauder.

5 Got the remains of my greenhouse cleaned up. I'll never do that again unless it's on a foundation and built right. No overpriced out of a box greenhouses again.
In it's defense it did survive for about 3 years with many a duct tape bandaid. First real winds from the wrong direction and it bent to shit, blew out and broke a bunch of panels. Now there is no evidence it ever existed.
Dug up some volunteer garlic bulbs and filled one corner of the garden. The deer seem to avoid garlic and onions so I can grow those.
It looks like everything thinks it's spring already. Tulips are breaking the surface all over the yard. Supposed to snow... eventually.

6 A bright sunny day has me cutting, dragging, and burning.

Having a big wooded lot seemed great 25 years ago, now a bit less.

7 I've got to stick some bushes in the ground before the weather warms up too much. That's a good project for maybe next weekend.

8 AND I caught the neighbors cat eating my feral kitty food. Little shit seems to really like the cheap stuff. She's a sweetheart, so I let it slide but I put that out for less fortunate kittys. She should go home and eat.

Yeah. I bought and with it came at least 8 hours per week doing some form of yard work. It was like buying a piss poorly paying part time job.

16 We have some unseasonable warm temperatures here too. I have talked about planting some cold weather hardy seeds and I think it's time. We can still get snow and freezing temps but I have lots of seed.

And since the female kitten showed up, I'm pretty sure I've seen all the tom cats in the neighborhood. Some definitely have homes so I have cut back on the food I put out. She goes in to be spayed on Tuesday, which should help.
