7 I saw "Melania" today in a small but packed theater. Definitely recommended for a slice of the life of a fairly private person, it takes a look into the busy weeks leading up to the inauguration.

It shows all the people behind the scenes who keep the trump train rolling. I especially liked her impish designer friend Hervé.

There was a preview of the upcoming movie "A Great Awakening", about the unlikely friendship between Benjamin Franklin and Reverend George Whitefield, that looks very good.

Meet exoplanet HD 137010 b, a possible Earth-2 about 146 ly away recently discovered:
https://is.gd/hmXTCD

The planet is about one earth radius in size, and has an orbital period around it's star of about 355 days. Mass is probably slight larger than earth. Surface gravity should be pretty close to 1g.

Now, the problem is the star is a K3.5V star, only about 20% of the luminosity of the sun, so this puts it at the very edge of the habitable zone. It could be colder than Mars. Or it could be as warm as earth, depending on the atmosphere.

41 Those solar panels for that hole will produce very little in the woods. Maybe 10% of capacity. He needs to clear a few acres of trees and put up a glass field.

To run that stuff he was showing you would need at least 5kw plus another 5kw to charge the batteries ON A GOOD DAY so now you need a 500 - 1000 sq ft of panels that would not even work in a forest.

From the article:

The planet’s orbital distance, so similar to Earth’s, means such transits happen far less often than for planets in tighter orbits around their stars (it’s a big reason why exoplanets with Earth-like orbits are so hard to detect in the first place).

------------

Wow, stunning.

Those snow-capped mountains in the background look like the background on the set of "The Chosen" when they're filming at the recreated "Jerusalem" in Utah.

* goes to lookup where that is located *

"The Jerusalem recreation featured in The Chosen is located in Goshen, Utah, within Utah County. This 3-acre set, officially known as the Motion Picture Studio South Campus, was constructed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and began development in 2010. It serves as a lifelike replica of ancient Jerusalem, including key locations such as the Pool of Bethesda, the Jordan River, and the Garden of Gethsemane."

Nope, Porcupine Ridge is about 220 miles and four hours to the southeast (by vehicle) from Goshen.

Yes, exactly. The transit method is very productive for planets very close, much closer than earth orbit distance. There are several methods used to look for exoplanets and the transit method is just one of them. The orbital plane has to be aligned just right from our perspective here on earth for the planet to pass right in front of the star.

Good for you both, Bulg!

I have a similar story: was estranged from a drug addict brother for a couple of decades, when he out-of-the-blue looked me up on the interwebz and sent me a letter asking if we could speak.

By some miracle, he was (1) still alive; (2) not in jail; and (3) had been sober for three years -- and that was three years ago.

He found a good Christian woman who has helped him stay on the straight and narrow, and now that he's in Texas (near Tyler) -- I got to visit with him when we attended the MoMe last October.

He's the only survivor I have from my nuclear family ...

--------

Less than a mile from here is Elk Mountain. There haven't been elk here in 300 years.

As an aside:
"Wood bison (often referred to historically as "wood buffalo" or simply buffalo in regional context) were once native to West Virginia, particularly in the western and central parts of the state, but were hunted to extinction in the region by the early 19th century. The last recorded wild bison in West Virginia was killed near Valley Head in Randolph County in 1825. "

I'm trying to think about the tree roots he would have encountered.

Also the arial shot didn't have a worn path that would have been necessary to bring in all of the materials. Seriously how did he get the fridge safely down there? block & tackle? And why didn't we see that process?

Regardless, his basement man cave would have been noisy with all of those hard surfaces and mechanicals.

Also, that is a lot of involvement just to go relieve one's self seeing that there was no plumbing anywhere.

I was working in an old office that had carpets assembled from 1'x1' squares. A few squares under my chair had come loose and it drove me crazy. So I got a tube of that construction adhesive and tacked it all down nice. Our area was scheduled for reno and we were all moved out. I came back many months later to check out the work and everything was cleared out. A big open void wall to wall, ceiling slabs down to the concrete. Except for one small area where my few squares of glued down carpet still remained.

Obviously, that's unsuitable for people who use their kitchens, so my dad immediately told us boys to tear that shit out and clean off the subfloor.

That's when we discovered The Horror.

This visionary, while brimming over with vision, lacked intelligence or grit or knowledge, and simply glued the carpet down with Liquid Nails all over the place. It was hell removing it.

Everything you do, for most crypto currencies is publicly viewable by the whole world via the block chain. You move large sums regularly? Everyone in the world can see that. Now by see, I mean they see a particular currency address on the receiving end. But crypto is the opposite of private. If you are ever dumb enough to comingle your personhood, ie. name, location, who you are with that currency public address you become a target. People will do this by being on a social web site and posting their receiving currency address for whatever reason. Generally a bad idea.

When I moved to PR a friend of a friend let me crash for a few days on his semi-enclosed patio. Semi is the important word in that sentence.

The first night I woke up to a skittering noise. Turned on my flashlight to see the walls and ceiling covered with Palmet .. Giant Frigging Cockroaches and geckos covering the walls and ceiling. No big ass snakes which was a plus but way too many creepy crawlers. Spurred my job/apartment hunt dramatically.

191 Living in FL I know about the freaking Palmetto bugs but one night many years ago I encountered a scene that I would like to forget.

I was awakened in the middle of the night by an odd crunching sound. The sound stopped when I turned on the light so I went back to bed and sure enough the crunch, crunch started again.

I ended up getting a flashlight and tracked down the source.

On a window still was a monster Palmetto bug chowing down on a buddy of his that had died and dried out.

I grabbed a shoe and started after the cannibal but he got away. I could fall asleep after that and moved into the guest bedroom.

I bombed my house the next day.

This is another instalment of adventures in FL and why you might not want to move here.

194 That kitchen. The bane of my existence.

After we fixed that horrible floor my mom saw it in a whole new light and had her own vision, which entailed changing every cubic inch of a couple large rooms, to include:

1.) A vast stretch of tile floor
2.) Over 100 sq. ft. of stone countertops
3.) The largest pantry you've ever seen
4.) A Bosch double-oven, six-burner Blue Star range, and a Chambers oven/range
5.) Various custom cabinetry
6.) And much more

This took blood, sweat, toil, tears, time and $$$ to carry off. But it was worth it. It was amazing. You could butcher a cow and cook it up in comfort and style in that kitchen.

Less than five years after completing this white elephant, my parents decided to move.

211 I'll join in calling "Bison!" on that stump job. I've worked in and around some big ex-trees, and there's no way he just bored through and got to diggin' underneath. Dad had a Circassian walnut fall on his garage. With a backhoe and chain saws, we worked all our spare time half a season long to get all the lower extremities out, and the roots were the size of upper tree branches, except moist and a lot springier.

I had a full-grown black walnut cut down next to my garage, and neglected to include its stump on the grinder list. When the upper part of the flush-cut turned out to be in the way of a patio walk extension, my hired hand and I lit into it, just to get it down a few inches below grade. With axe, augers, chisels and several kinds of power saws, it took two of us a whole day just to reduce it that much -- and I said screw it and took a chance with the major roots around it. We built a planter over what was left. Boring through and building under that rat's nest would have taken weeks, at least. Every one of those one-foot diameter lobes would have had to be hand-hewn.
