"Will You Shut Up!:" Low-IQ DEI Congresswoman Maxine Waters "Asks a Question" of Scott Bessent, Then Tells Him to Shut Up When He Answers
I don't know what this low-executive-function brain-damaged dementia patient's point was. She recalls Bessent's previous statement that there is no evidence that tariffs are inflationary, and then says... I think her whole argument is that "if you tax coffee and bananas, that's inflationary," therefore that's a contradiction of your statement. She sets this up as if Bessent has made contradictory statements, but the "contradiction" is just her assertion that if you tax coffee and bananas, that's inflationary. Bessent replies that the source of inflation are the "10 to 20 million illegal aliens" that Joe Biden let into the country, who then drove up prices, at which point this, um, public servant hisses "Will you shut up!"It's very obvious that she has dementia and does not understand the words that her aides wrote for her and does not understand the "argument" she's making.
Rep. Waters, the ranking member on the committee, was grilling Bessent on whether President Trump's tariffs were inflationary and harmful to consumers, suggesting they amounted to a "war on American consumers." She pressed him on whether he would act as a "voice of reason" in the administration and urge Trump to reduce or eliminate the tariffs to lower costs for Americans. "Will you be the voice of reason in the administration and urge Trump to stop waging a war on American consumers?" Waters asked. "Yes or no?" "You seem confused as to the definition of inflation," Bessent began before Waters interupted, and repeated her question. The exchange quickly devolved into both officials talking over one another. Bessent argued that the Biden administration had "let in between 10 and 20 million immigrants," who he said went on to consume housing that would otherwise have gone to working Americans.

Taxes don't necessarily cause inflation, they may cause the price of goods to go up, but that increase isn't inflation.
inflation is when the dollar is devaluated by more fiat currency.

Tariffs are a tax, no more, no less, but as to who pays them, it depends on a number of circumstances--substitution effect, supply/demand effects, macro effects like currency exchange rates, strategic decisions by the vendor to maintain market share and workforce, key decisions by importers as to whether or not shift supply chains to a lower cost producer, etc. etc.
For most part, tariffs of a large country become such a mess entangled with micro and macro factors that whether tariffs cause general inflation can't be answered as a general rule.
For individual products, perhaps in the short run, but in the long run, not so much.

They cannot cause inflation because they are a tax. No one thinks sales tax causes inflation even though it raises prices. It takes money out of circulation, reducing its velocity.
Deficit spending causes inflation, which is why even when we used hard currency, there would be inflation during wartime as the Crown spent all its reserves and then some. Deflation usually followed the conclusion of hostilities.

No one thought they were inflationary because they are not inflationary. Look at US price stability over the first 150 years. All that time we had tariffs, which were a major source of revenue for the US government, especially before there was a federal income tax.
They do not have to be prohibitive, and could be little more than a national sales tax on imports.
Inflation is caused by borrowing, typically during wartime. Decoupling the dollar from gold was what got it cooking, along with peacetime deficits, which were historically unknown.

He got rid of the 2% inflation goal, and got rid of the LIBOR and got the SOFOR instituted so that London banks no long set the value to the US Dollar. For that he has done good things.
His not dropping the interest rate makes it expensive to borrow money, both for the USG and for the Euros, so that is kind of a wash.

You seem to be intentionally obtuse. Price increases are not necessarily a symptom of inflation.
Inflation is caused by intentionally devaluing currency (such as injecting trillions of dollars into the economy to support 10s of millions of foreign invaders). Inflation is caused by bad fiscal policy.
Tariffs are taxes. Tariffs do not devalue currency.

Inflation is caused in the macro by too much money but inflation can happen in individual markets by increasing the demand which increases the money chasing too few products.

If the government prints and hands everyone $100,000 you feel richer but you're not. You're still bidding against everyone else for the same amount of cars, wheat, haircuts, and orange juice. So the price of those goes up. That's inflation.
Moving money from your pocket to the government's pocket isn't inflation. You are poorer, so you can buy fewer things. But the government is richer, so it can buy more things. The amount of dollars bidding for all the goods in the economy remains the same.

Through a bizarre series of circumstances, I actually met her 20 years ago - she was dumb as a box of rocks then. Literally couldn't understand my relatively simple questions. But no worries, she compensates for it by being an aggressively entitled asshole.
It seems like 20 years hasn't helped much. Then again, this was about par for the course with me - she'd get simple things wrong, and when you tried to correct her, she'd start yelling at you.

Well said. Now, tariffs might create inflation, but only if:
1) the producers don't decide to compensate with lowering their profit margins. If they do, the price to the consumer remains the same.
2) The consumers don't just switch to another product with lower tariffs. Say buying American.
3) The product is a luxury consumers can happily do without. Like French wines.
The only way tariffs can cause inflation is if none of those three things happen. What we seem to be seeing is all three of those things are happening. Imports are dropping, but that is not fueling inflation.

2) Very smart Trump cabinet members, who understand the topic and answer the questions in ways these dummies didn't expect.
3) Because they are dumb, and don't know what they are talking about, they either plod on and make points that don't make any sense or lash out at the cabinet person for making them look dumb.
Waters couldn't define a tariff with a dictionary and a speaking coach. Even if it was explained to her, she'll forget in about 10 minutes. Bessent disrupted the script, which is why she got angry - what else is she supposed to do, wing it? She has no clue what she's even asking.
Imagine Waters reading questions about advanced mathematics and nuclear physics. Somebody gives her an answer, and she has no clue what to do with it.
