The SLS and Orion is pretty much in sunk-cost fallacy land now. Isaacman and Trump 2.0 people were leaning toward just cancelling it, but the prospect of the Chicoms beating us back to the Moon caused them to go on with it. Yep, LH2 is very tricky to handle. Both the Saturn V and the Space shuttle had many problems with leaks. The 3rd stage, known as the S-IVB, sprung a bad leak on a replenish value on the Apollo 11 flight just as the astronauts were headed to the pad to board the CM. It was almost a show stopper. They ended up bypassing that valve and keeping the tank replenished by manually feathering the main fill valve, which was pretty tricky to do. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 05, 2026 04:34 AM (w6EFb) It's such a sad fallacy. I wonder if it underlies Newsom's High-Speed Rail blather. Or maybe that's just rampant narcissism. Posted by: m at February 05, 2026 04:52 AM (SSiCQ) 16
Publius - while I’m thinking of it - when watching the Moon on a clear night track through the sky for a few minutes, it doesn’t track perfectly straight or there’s a slight wobble or yaw back and forth. Is that actually visible? Or just imagination or atmospheric aberration or something like that?

>> Is that actually visible? Or just imagination or atmospheric aberration or something like that?
That's almost certainly atmospheric effects, or even thermal effects with the telescope optics itself. The Moon "librates" over the course of the month, but that's a long term thing, not something over a few minutes. At one time GM had a research lab in my area and refueling stations around the area. They let media people take them for a week or so just to see how they like them. The media loved them and it was going to be the next big thing in cars motors..
Then they had a big fire/explosion at a refueling station with many injuries. They closed the lab and moved it to Detroit. Haven't heard any more about it from GM. Posted by: coliin at February 05, 2026 05:03 AM (e8qy3) 19
Yeah, that’s what I thought. It’s something noticeable with the naked eye, if one is grounded, you know laying on your back stationary. Every several seconds it will appear to lead and lag a little bit, not a smooth arc.

That reminds me, a while back, on the night of a lunar eclipse, beforehand the Moon did noticeably shimmer one time. My mother and Miley were out looking, and they noticed it shimmering, and I went out and sure enough it was. It was quite striking, but settled down soon. That's some big time refraction effect of some sort. I haven't seen it shimmer that much ever since. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at February 05, 2026 05:16 AM (w6EFb) 23

My trip to the aquarium & insectarium went well. It was annoying to wait for the ferry going and coming, but the new ferries are quiet and snug. The insects were okay (there is actually a little cafe where you can sample stuff like mealworm pate on crackers). As for the fish and animals, in their new smaller space the Aquarium has had to get rid of some of them, the otters, for instance. But the Southern Africa penguins are in an enclosure with a big skylight, so you can actually see them, and you can stand next to the glass as they swim past you; and you can actually touch the cownose manta rays (spoiler: They feel like velvet).
The Amazon Rain Forest room was warm and humid -- as if they had let April Nawlins weather into the building. Birds are allowed to fly free there. And there was this big catfish that looked as if he were sizing me up for *his* dinner. I was glad to leave that section behind. And thanks to Miss Linda's coupons and timing, the whole thing was *free*! Whee! Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 05, 2026 05:44 AM (wzUl9) 36

I would like to share something God showed me on Tuesday.- a moment of God's work in other people . I had asked for prayer for Lisa, who is the daughter of one of the people in the Bible study. She lives in one of those adult communities in Florida and has a husband but no kids. She has cancer and is having some treatments . Her mother told me that kind neighbors arranged for lots of food to be brought over for her and also for a cleaning woman. This was all at no charge to Lisa. What kind neighbors!

Oh, and the Insectarium had a room where the butterflies literally fly free around you. I'm generally no insect fan, but butterflies are lovely. The room, also warmer than others, had "airlocks," so to speak, so you can enter and leave without the little flutterbys getting out. In their old space that room had a fountain with koi fish, but they had to leave that out when they set up in the new building.

That's not really fair. LH2 is so notorious for seepage that standards are an "acceptable" rate of leakage as opposed to "no leakage" at all. NASA's kinda screwed until Congress lets them switch to Methane. Posted by: Fen at February 05, 2026 06:01 AM (ciYHQ) 52

Posted by: Fen at February 05, 2026 *** I read The Once and Future King many years ago. All I can recall is the chilling little scene where Merlin turns Arthur into an ant, and he sees the totalitarian, programmed-from-birth nature of an ant colony: "Everything not compulsory is forbidden." White had been an actor? I did not know that. I always recommend doing some amateur theatre as an important experience for an aspiring writer. You gain a tremendous appreciation for the dramatic and for what works on an audience, whether in person or through the written word. "White had been an actor?"
I'm meant that as a question, I don't know if he was ever on stage Posted by: Fen at February 05, 2026 *** According to his Wiki bio, he wasn't ever an actor. He wrote quite a few novels aside from the Arthurian series, including some science fiction way back in the '30s. He did his college thesis on Malory, though, so he was well prepared to write about Merlin and Arthur. He lived to see his work adapted as Camelot the musical and as the Disney animated movie The Sword in the Stone.
