Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Washington Post Set to Lay Off Hundreds of EmployeesThey'll be completely closing down "almost the entire" sports desk. Which struck me as strange -- isn't sports a low-cost but popular section of the paper? I guess there are now so many internet sports outlets that no one cares about what a stinky old liberal thought about the latest "Commanders" game. The Washington Post announced on Wednesday that it is laying off hundreds of its employees, which marks one of the newspaper's deepest workforce cuts in its history.Papers like the NY Times and Washington Post were criticized for years for not sufficiently covering the cities in which they were based. All they cared about was national politics. I guess the Washington Post is now acknowledging they don't really cover Washington so they'll save a buck by ending the pretense that they do. But maybe I'm reading this wrong. Ed Morrissey thinks they're restructuring in the exact opposite direction, focusing more on local coverage and ending the competition with the NY Times to be the national liberal daily "news" paper. Maybe I missed something. The paper will also be drastically chopping its budget for international reporting. As opposed to sports, international coverage is very expensive. Even when they rely almost exclusively on foreign "stringers" who are not-so-secretly part of the Hamas terrorist organization. The cuts are required because the #Resistance leftists at the Post have shed one half of the former audience, and the paper loses almost $100 million a year. That's practically Stephen Colbert level losses! ... When Jeff Bezos first acquired The Washington Post in 2013, he expanded operations and invested heavily in the outlet. But recent years have seen drastic financial losses, a severe increase in subscriber cancellations, and a mass exodus of top talent.Ed Morrissey writes that the new leadership has been warning the #Resistance lefties at the paper that Winter Is Coming for two years: Lewis warned in response that he wasn't going to stick with the plan that involved losing $77 million a year to float a vanity project for progressive activists:Part of this is just the fact that traditional media is entering the hospice phase. For whatever reason, people are just out of the habit of reading these legacy newspapers. (Or seeing movies in legacy theaters.) Another factor is that the specific politics being pushed by the Washington Post's #Resistance lefties. It's not that #Resistance leftist politics don't have a market. They do. One third of the country are, alas, woke communist psychopathic nihilists. You should be able to sell a paper appealing to this lunatic cohort. The trouble is, every media outlet, pretty much, panders to this same lunatic cohort. They're all reading from the same depraved Marxist prayer book. Plus, what #Resistance leftists are selling is not at all a difficult product to produce. They've shifted from reporting on news, which does take some time and effort, and which is something people will pay for, to just ranting endlessly that Bad Orange Man Is Getting More Orange and More Bad and shrieking the same six propaganda slogans forever. You don't need an organization that spends $300 million on salaries and rent to do this. Any deranged leftwing imbecile with a $500 camera can do this from their basement. And they're almost all doing it -- so what does any lefty need the lefty press for? The religion has just as many preachers as adherents. That's too many. Some will need to leave the poisonous church of Marxism and find work that's actually productive. I can't imagine what that might end up being, but I'm sure they must be good at something. Right? Right? Hello everyone! I got decent sleep, not great but decent, so I won't be whining as much today. I hope you're all doing great. I got my humidifier out of the garage and cleaned it but apparently it broke so I'm waiting for Amazon to send me my next one. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

They've lost countless subscribers since he took over and he's not getting them back by doing this. Maybe they shouldn’t have chosen to turn into a fascist mouthpiece? The newspaper that brought down Nixon, turned into state propaganda and is now teetering. Sad. What is he trying to achieve? He refuses to prop up the paper. He fucked with reporting and lost their most loyal subscribers (I'm on of them) and did nothing to bring them back. Did he buy it just to kill it? He's doing what oligarchs do: protecting his interests. When Democrats had more power he was content to bash Republicans. Now that the pendulum of authoritarianism has swung the opposite direction he is doing the same. It's not a morally principled stance, it's a self-serving one. Sid, there are comments about Elon and Trump going to the island. And then they get proven as fake. If both of them went, they can burn along with everyone else. All pedos must pay. But one of the photos of him with a young girl that "proved" he was there turned out to be him with his daughter, a young Ivanka, for goodness sake.
Share your proof. I'm happy to see anything. Bill Gates was just quoted as he wished he'd never met Epstein. Acting like it's all one giant fake setup to frame him and he never went to the island. Sure, Bill. And Melinda is stirring it all up again. I remember when Bezos was still a darling of the left a few years ago that some lefty academic published a paper that showed after Bezos bought the WaPo all negative stories about Amazon disappeared. - For whatever reason, people are just out of the habit of reading these legacy newspapers. (Or seeing movies in legacy theaters.)
While I understand the point about movies as it relates to most Hollywood garbage, there is a social aspect about going to the movies that is fun. A good, original movie, seen in a theater with friends and snacks and possibly dinner beforehand and more hangout time after, is a social experience, and the hope that you can have more of that without having blue-haired leftist toxin showed through your retinas for two hours is part of why movie theaters continue to exist. I still think Hollywood should be destroyed, but I hope solid independent films keep theaters in business. Posted by: DPICM at February 04, 2026 12:45 PM (zweKz) 121

They need to learn to code!
I know its a joke, but coding requires a sense of cause and effect. Not necessarily logicIve known many great programmers who I couldnt consider logical. But they all would understand why the order of these lines matter: $message = "Hello, World"; echo "<p>$message</p>"; Not understanding why those lines must be in that order is probably the biggest predictor of never being able to code, and thats pretty much modern journalism, since at least Michael Crichtons wet streets cause rain formulation of Gel-Mann Amnesia. Back when a little coding helped non-coders do even basic writing on the Internet, I used to teach very, very basic courses. And Id analogize those two lines to whether you would put the wall frames or the windows in first when building a house. Everyone understood why windows cant attach to empty air; not everyone understood the analogy to those two lines of code. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at February 04, 2026 12:47 PM (EXyHK) 135

Posted by: rhomboid at February 04, 2026 12:39 PM (U/Byj) Supposedly it made $1M just on Monday alone, and is going to expand to 200 more theaters! Good for Melania. The left was crowing before its opening that no one will go see it so it's a flop. Now that's proven false, their new spin is that it will never make back its $40M price tag so it's a flop. It was NEVER supposed to make huge money at the box office! Thats not the streaming model. Amazon bought it to be a draw on Prime. Ask the Obamas and Netflix if their documentaries made back their deal that cost Netflix hundreds of millions. It never did. Thats now how the streaming game works. I'm just glad Amazon isn't as dismissive of theaters as Netflix is and is expanding it. Netflix keeps leaving a lot of good money on the table by not doing flashy theater releases. At this point, Melania's documentary might be a better ROI than the Rings of Power and Wheel of Time series. If you can stand it, I recommend reading Victor Navaskys A Matter of Opinion. He talks about the business of journalism as just that, a responsibility that transcends the very policies he loudly supports. The sense of the anointed permeates the book; hes not trying to hide it at all, or, if he is, hes incompetent about it. Much of the book is about convincing investors to part with their money no strings attached. The left is endowed with the capacity to feel nervous. It feels an obligation to provide innovative answers. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at February 04, 2026 12:56 PM (EXyHK) 195

Incoherent story.
One thing I want to point out is this a big thing with movies nowadays - the movie has scenes and the point of the plot is just to move you from one scene to another even if it really doesn't make sense how that plot transition works. For example, I saw Unhinged. Fat Russell Crowe murders a guy in front of 20 people in a resteraunt...IN THE SOUTH...and not only does he not get shot or Bubba-stomped he just casually walks out so we can then go to the next scene. Papers like the NY Times and Washington Post were criticized for years for not sufficiently covering the cities in which they were based. All they cared about was national politics. I guess the Washington Post is now acknowledging they don't really cover Washington so they'll save a buck by ending the pretense that they do.
But maybe I'm reading this wrong. Ed Morrissey thinks they're restructuring in the exact opposite direction You've got it reversed, Ace: WaPo is SLASHiNG its "metro desk," cutting way back (if not eliminating entirely) local coverage. I have insider information confirming this. The ttruth is that 95% of the tiny audience that read the Washington Post do so to get news abut national politics. The WaPo readership simply does not care if there was a carjacking in Maryland or a school bpard meeting in Virginia. They want national politics, international headlines. Peoplke turn to the Post to "set the agenda" forn the day's news framing (i.e. the post tells them what to care about). Local news coverage brought in almost nzero readers. Iron Lung ... I'm talking about the medical device. Hard to believe it today, but that was a Very Big Thing back in the polio days. Saved many lives. There were entire hospital wings of these machines, all lined up like coffins. If you look at pics of these wings today, it looks like the setting of a horror movie.

Buddy of mine was a subscriber to a local SF Bay Area newsrag for years. The paper circulation department called him recently to offer him a "special renewal deal" at $35/mo for home delivery 7 days a week.
He told them he felt that was way too high a price. So they offered $25, then $20 for the monthly rate. He kept refusing. Finally the woman asked "how much do you think it would be worth for you to renew?" He replied $1 per month. She said OK and renewed his subscription for that price. Pretty indicative of how badly these dying businesses need to falsify there "subscriber base" to justify inflated rates. Posted by: proudvastrightwingguy at February 04, 2026 01:19 PM (MNCvZ) 302

Shorter Wash Po News...
In early 2025, Fed Gov stopped funding Wash Po through ad buys and subscriptions through direct and indirect means. Thus, Wash Po has to make money on its subscriber base. After a couple months, it has shown it can't, so it's entering the death spiral. As for why the sports desk is gone - Washington pro sports suck. No one cheers for them; instead, they follow their original home teams (go Eagles)...thus, it's no loss. Posted by: Nova Local at February 04, 2026 01:30 PM (tOcjL) 375

The sports section is the easiest section to cut because internally they hate sports, especially professional sports. The sports reporters love covering sports, but the editors and others absolutely loathe them.
True story from my days working in minor league sports. The reporter that covered us told me that they couldn't do many stories on our players because they were white and they needed stories about minorities and women. So much so that they sent the reporter to cover a HS game with 40 people in attendance over our game with 7,000 people in attendance. Posted by: Oldcat at February 04, 2026 01:23 PM (8avO+) If you follow Mike Benz, he is laying out how Epstein was a money launderer for the CIA and for other Intelligence agencies, from the time of Iran Contra to when he finally got jugged. The sex trade was either a side gig, or it was "Yacht girls" at various ages that were used in place of the toasters and blenders your savings and loan offers as lagniappes for deposits and new accounts.
