Feel good story

13-year-old Ditches Lifejacket and Makes ‘Superhuman’ Swim to Save Family Swept out to Sea

A 13-year-old boy has been hailed as a hero after swimming 4 hours through rough seas to rescue his family.

A family of 4 was enjoying a holiday in Australia’s southwest coast near Quindalup when strong winds blew their inflatable paddleboards out to sea. The boy was separated from his mom and 2 siblings before his canoe began to take on water.

Wearing a life-jacket, he began to swim against the wind towards the shore, knowing every second counted in the race to get help to save his family.

***

“And the brave fella thought he’s not going to make it with a life jacket on, so he ditched it, and he swam the next 2 hours without a life jacket,” said Bresland. “I thought, ‘Mate, that is incredible.'”

Once ashore he successfully raised the alarm and a multi-agency search and rescue operation was mobilized, including Western Australia state Water Police and its rescue helicopter. The teen provided detailed descriptions of the paddleboards, and within the hour, his family was rescued by boat, having drifted 7 miles out into the Indian Ocean.

2 hours of swimming?!? Wow, way to go young dude!

Vehicles used to be a lot cooler. Any of you out there willing to admit you're not really 29, and you remember wraparound windshields?

Why Automakers Abandoned Wraparound Windshields After The 1950s

doof-wraparound-windshield.jpg

The wraparound windshield once was a trend in the automotive world. It's a design solution in which the windshield is built forming a curve toward each side of the cabin. As a result, the frontmost pillars, the ones between the windshield and the front window of each side, are displaced away from the car's front end, and the window next to it becomes narrower. That solution has been used on the rear windshield, too, where the wraparound design displaces the rearmost pillars in the opposite way — or, sometimes, wraps around the other way.

This trend is credited to the 1951 GM Le Sabre, a concept car dreamed up by Harley Earl and inspired by jet fighters — remember, jet design was all the rage in America back then. The Le Sabre's wraparound windshield resembled the canopies used in jet fighters and only became a reality after the industry spent years improving the technology for it. After GM started using it in mass production in 1953, Ford and Chrysler quickly followed suit. Over the following years, it was used on other cars despite the need to adapt the original design — the Le Sabre was a convertible concept car, so it didn't have the conventional roof and windows of a sedan or station wagon.

Sadly, wraparound windshields were largely dropped from automotive design in the 1960s; newer examples are much rarer. Among the practical reasons, having such a large glass area made the cabin excessively hot, especially in warm weather, and occupants would feel too visible from the outside. From a technical point of view, the curved glass causes some distortion on the sides. Besides, using larger glass areas led to making the pillars thinner, which raised concern that the cabin would become less resistant in a collision.

Check out the whole thing. Article contains some cool links to other car stuff.

Those of you who were here on Sunday night were treated to an amazing sunset photo from lurker "Howard in Alberta". I previously featured one of his sunrise photos. Anyway, there were some questions in the comments about his photo

Did Howard in Alberta say where that pic was taken? I'd have to go about 30 miles West to see the Rockies like that. They are just below the horizon for me.

That line of brush looks like a caragana hedge. Commonly planted all over Alberta and Saskatchewan as a windbreak.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 01, 2026 11:18 PM (8zz6B)

From the photographer himself!

Just read the comments, and here are answers to some questions/comments:

Location of the Alberta sunset (and previous photo of sunrise) is extreme SW Alberta, east of Waterton Lakes National Park. The mountains are the southern Canadian Rockies.

And yes, the hedge is caragana. Anyone can have one, but the secret is to have personally planted it fifty years ago.

Howard

Thanks for the follow-up, Howard! Keep those photos coming!

80 I'll defer to AOP on this, but the "Why Automakers Abandoned Wraparound Windshields After The 1950s" article is retarded. The only halfway valid reason cited is visual distortion caused by curved glass, and that's only half valid because no one is looking through the curved side part of the windshield while driving.

Otherwise, the total amount of glass and the amount of solar heat admitted is the same with a curved windshield. You have more windshield and less side glass, but the total amount of glass is more or less the same.

As for the A-pillars being smaller and weaker, that isn't true. They're pretty much the same size, just moved back a few inches.

88 Year of the Cat, Time Passages, both by Al Stewart

I often stayed awake at night with a tinny little multiband radio listening to an FM station hoping to hear “Time Passages”. Al Stewart is a raging lefty despite studying history but he was an amazing songwriter.

“And it’s kind of hot and smoky
 In this anteroom to Hell
 And I won’t make up a story
‘Cause you know the truth so well
It’s much too late to worry
That we never had a chance
And when Joe the Georgian gets here
 We will dance…”

100 The recent Texas special election that the D won and swung by 30 points to the Left over Trump's '26 result-

• there were 2 Republicans and 1 Demonic Party candidates, which forced a run-off because the Demonic Party candidate didn't score a majority.

• no one showed up for the run-off since it was terribly cold and icy

• and the Win would be just a Participation Trophy since the legislature, outside a special session, doesn't convene again until 2027.

I want the GOP to be scared that they can lose very easily, but OTOH, why piss away good campaign money to win a scrimmage and not a game?

There was a significant amount of stuff that probably isn't listed on the set list. I saw the handsome Melinda on a podcast being asked about how she felt seeing all this evidence of Bill's chummy relationship with King Pedo.

She said it made her "sad."

She said "sad" about eight times.

It dispelled my assumption that her mouth must have at least one useful function.

This car came to me without overdrive. I added it, using all factory parts. The difference is night and day. Get it out on the freeway, and In third direct, it struggles to make 75 mph. Drop it into overdrive, and it cruises quietly at 75. And if you need to accelerate quickly to pass, just floorboard the accelerator, and it kicks down to direct, same as passing gear in an automatic. Around town, shifting automatically between second direct and second over, you can drive for miles without ever having to place a foot on the clutch pedal. Only if you have to come to full stop.

204 There were lots of cars with overdrive manual trans back in the 50s. Some of them, and I can't remember any brand of note, had a gear arrangement that did not allow engine deceleration braking while in OD. And shifting into and out of OD was a separate operation. Better mileage? I guess so but ought to check the Mobil contest results!
Posted by: LRob in OK at February 03, 2026 11:01 PM (47diA)

The Borg-Warner overdrive, which all North American brands used, in one form or another, had an overrunning clutch in direct drive mode, so no engine braking. Once overdrive kicked in, you had engine braking, but it was not real strong, because of the gear ratio in effect. Second overdrive is very close to third direct, and engine braking in second over is useful. If you are in a situation where you really need engine braking, like descending a mountain grade, you pull on the lockout handle and lock the overdrive out, and you have engine braking in all gears.

Neither the Borg Warner or the Laycock could be added to an existing transmission. The transmission case and mainshaft had to be made to accept the overdrive unit. In the case of my Lark, to switch from straight 3-speed to overdrive, it was 1. remove straight 3 speed, 2. install overdrive transmission, 3. install lockout cable and wiring.

Lanceros and lonsdales are the most difficult cigars to blend and roll (I guess some of the figurados are also hard to roll). I believe that often a factory will have only a few people capable of rolling them.

And the blending is challenging because there's so little filler to work with, vs. binder and wrapper. And of course combustion is a special problem with such thin cigars, for the same reason (filler/wrapper ratio).

250 man is correct, that high wrapper/filler ratio on lanceros/lonsdales delivers a different flavor profile.

The different vitolas (shapes and sizes) of many cigars will vary quite a bit in their flavor. Some makers will blend each vitola separately, to achieve a uniform profile across the line. Others just keep the same blend, and the different sizes can be very different. Part of the challenge and fun of trying different examples of a particular cigar.

As far as so much to try is concerned, I've pretty much been buying one of whatever looks appealing, whenever someone is having a sale on singles, and trying everything. I've even got a journal so I can remember what I liked, and buy larger quantities.

My stepdad and I did that once. I really liked the 1502 Blue Sapphire lancero, and got a sampler that had the Blue Sapphire in a toro, so we decided to taste them side by side.

It really made a difference in the taste. I still preferred the lancero, but Stepdad liked the toro better.

265 FeatherBlade my understanding is that yes in fact lanceros used to be much more popular. More of a niche item now. Lots of lines actually have them, but most don't. Demand is certainly declined for them, but the rollling/blending challenge is real. A reason some blenders will do lanceros - it's the challenge of making a good one.

I keep notes on new sticks when I try them. Really helps over time, keeping track of what worked and what didn't. And now I always buy 2 or 3 singles of a new-to-me cigar. A sample size of one is often a poor reflection of the line, there are individual cigars that are just not right (humidification or other condition, a "lemon" that wasn't rolled right, etc.). I buy several and make sure to burn them a month or more apart.

They sell fairly well, though mostly for a modest price. If you sell one at a time, you'll wind up just subsidizing the shipper. Look at the prices for lots of several sold.

I went way down that rabbit hole from my Dad's estate. I found a guy who had the records from the shift work at Lesney and knew how many shifts they produced the individual colors of each car.

Were never inexpensive (well, except my first 5-pack, Romeo y Julietas in a nice tin I bought at a kiosk in Leningrad waaay back in the day, with a few of the many rubles garnered from the sale of one pair of Levis). But then Habanos SA raised prices sharply 2 (3?) years ago.

Weasel still indulges, he'll have more direct data. But a big hurricane ravaged Pinar del Rio province (heartland of tobacco growing) a few years back, and the general economic decline must be having an impact.

These are also the people who wouldn't have set foot in this neighborhood 40 years ago when we were the urban pioneers trying to turn things around.

Oh, and these same people are handing out whistles so that they can "warn" all of the illegals in the neighborhood whenever ICE comes around. Really. They are convinced that every black SUV that they see is ICE coming to drag children out of one of the elementary schools in the neighborhood.

We took the ICE sticker and put it on our freezer door. Right above the ice dispenser.

303 Well, reason #78438 why I consider duracell batteries to be leaky pieces of miserable shit. I found a few of my old on/off pedals that controlled some rack effects units I used years ago. I had upgraded a few times since I used those old things, but these were great for playing rush and I just wanted to hear them again. It occurred to me that there was probably ancient batteries in them and I better check. 2 pedals had duracells, they were goners, corrosion city. 1 pedal had a pair of original frigging batteries to the pedal, probably from the mid 80's. No leakage, they looked new. They're older than my frigging marriage. Duracells leak just looking at them, and I stopped using them because of it, but seeing an original pair of Roland batteries that date back to the frigging Reagan administration in mint condition shows me somebody out there can't make batteries.

309 Re gold. And heavy elements in general. I got fascinated with their origin a while back. A mystery about that has finally been solved. In the old days, astrophysicists would just sort of handwave that all the heavy elements were produced in supernovae. Well, turns out supernovae can't make much gold and other heavies much at all.

When LIGO first detected gravitational radiation in 2017 or whenever it was, it was a neutron star binary merger. And when they turned the optical instruments toward that source, they found gold being produced like a mofo. That event produced 3 to 13 earth masses of gold.

But turned out that still wasn't enough. Those don't occur enough to account for it all. Just recently, they figured out another source for the "r-process" necessary to produce the heavy elements in abundance. It was magnetar flare. And those make up the difference and with the neutron star mergers, that accounts for the observed abundance of gold and the others.

320 >> What's a magnetar?

It's a neutron star with a stupid crazy strong magnetic field. Regular neutron stars have insane magnetic fields, but these take it up an order or two of magnitude.

The field strength approaches the quantum limit of how strong a vacuum field can be. The field's energy density is greater than mc^2 energy density of lead.

Your mind just can't wrap around how strong that field is, or the exotic conditions of the neutron star itself.

(oblig. JLPicard ref.)

Exhaust (or "combustion") motor-- blows the smoke up chimney.
"Convection" motor-- blows warmed air into the room.
Upper auger motor-- turns a little at a time, based on heat setting, to drop pellets onto the Lower auger.
Lower auger motor-- turns continuously, to feed pellets into the firebox.

338 It really is amazing how everything is junk these days. Well it comes from china mostly, so no surprise. I'm in the middle of building a 1956 harley panhead for a guy. He has an original frame, original front end, motor, and trans. Thats it, the entire rest of the bike is aftermarket. Not a damn thing fits. I had to mod, tweak, and massage every damn part we ordered, and there are tons of parts. I must have had to mod 30 parts already. None of it's from china thank god, because that stuff would be so bad it would be beyond modding. Its like these companies make parts and have no clue what they do and what they have to fit against or work in conjunction with.

Your mind just can't wrap around how strong that field is, or the exotic conditions of the neutron star itself.

yeah, I became a big fan when I moved to this house. It had a gas cook top and electric wall oven, then I redid the kitchen and went to a regular stove, but kept the gas. The first time I used that gas cooktop I made some of the best frigging eggs because I was able to control the heat so perfectly. I was an instant fan.

That's the thing-- flame is flame is flame. And it's immediate. If you've cooked with one gas stove, you can cook *reliably* on ANY gas stove.

Electric elements? Uh... you need to guess, and from stove to stove it's different, probably due to age of the burner elements. (?)

Over time, I've noticed that I need to turn the dial up a little higher than when my stove was new.

You're not kidding. When I moved into the old house it had a regular electric stove. I eventually redid the kitchen in that house too and went with a glass top electric stove. Holy shit, not even in the same universe. We had to get all new pots because if you didn't have pots with a perfectly flat bottom you weren't boiling water. The burners kept cycling. It took 45 minutes to boil water the first time. Mrs b was pissed, she went and got new pots and then it was good, but still way different than the regular old coils. The glass top didn't just cool down like the older coils did. You had to slide the pots around on the glass to find a cooler area until the temperature finally dropped. With the original stove some of the coils burned out and I put all new ones in...and then burned everything because they were new and way hotter.

The magnetar magnetic field energy density works out to be 192 Tsar Bombas of energy packed in 1 cm^3, 1 mL of volume.

And the "takeaway" is it takes such exotic and mindboggling conditions to produce gold and other heavy elements. So, that gold ring or piece of jewelry required un-imaginable amounts of energy for the universe to produce in abundance.

Just boggled my mind to think about it.

We have the "kohn" scale for stupidity, although of late it has not received as much usage as it once did. Defining an "abrams" scale might prove difficult, though -- would it refer to her mass or the gap between her two front teeth, and therefore be a unit of distance?

BTW, did DOE ever "claw back" the 2 million bucks (IIRC) from her dodgey dodge to help po' folk by buying them new iceboxes, phonographs, and such?

354 My gas has different ratings too. The old one was full btu, you could melt lead in a pot.

If your neighborhood or the gas company has a line close they will usually run it to a meter at your house for free. If there is a charge it is usually a credit against your bill. Then find an off line plumber and run a line to your house.
Depends on what kind of regulations. Because, as you probably know, it's as simple as tinker toys.

I have an old Desai heater, comes out in winter that puts out up to 35,000 btu. It has a thermostat.
It's an alternative.
