Downward momentum, you mean? ![]() Everyone knows it's hard to get college students to do the reading--remember books? But the attention-span crisis is not limited to the written word. Professors are now finding that they can't even get film students--film students--to sit through movies. "I used to think, If homework is watching a movie, that is the best homework ever," Craig Erpelding, a film professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, told me. "But students will not do it." I heard similar observations from 20 film-studies professors around the country. They told me that over the past decade, and particularly since the pandemic, students have struggled to pay attention to feature-length films. Malcolm Turvey, the founding director of Tufts University's Film and Media Studies Program, officially bans electronics during film screenings. Enforcing the ban is another matter: About half the class ends up looking furtively at their phones. ... And the problem is not limited to large introductory courses. Akira Mizuta Lippit, a cinema and media-studies professor at the University of Southern California--home to perhaps the top film program in the country--said that his students remind him of nicotine addicts going through withdrawal during screenings: The longer they go without checking their phone, the more they fidget. Eventually, they give in.A lot of people feel that they have lost most of their ability to focus. I'm one of them. I can still read books -- on occasion -- but I do sometimes put them down after a very short bout of reading. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Honestly, I'm to the point where I want Disney to continue augering in, as an object lesson to the rest of them. I recommend Critical Drinker's new post on Seven Kingdoms (a GoT prequel). The gym I go to is a classic example of this - people use a piece of gym equipment for a minute or two, and then spend 5-15 minutes scrolling on their phones while sitting on the equipment. The gym used to have signs up asking people not to do this, but they have apparently given up. (I don't bring my phone to the gym.) Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were on Rogan recently. They said that Netflix wants filmmakers to restate the plot three or four times in the dialog to account for viewers who are in their phones during the movie. They also said that typical filmmaking saves the most expensive set piece for the finale, but Netflix wants a big set piece scene in the first five minutes. The Atlantic is 99% junk articles, Ace, but that's actually really thought provoking. What do we do? from it:
"In a multiple-choice question on a recent final exam, Jeff Smith, a film professor at UW Madison, asked what happens at the end of the Truffaut film Jules and Jim. More than half of the class picked one of the wrong options, saying that characters hide from the Nazis (the film takes place during World War I) or get drunk with Ernest Hemingway (who does not appear in the movie). Smith has administered similar exams for almost two decades; he had to grade his most recent exam on a curve to keep students’ marks within a normal range." SEE, THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Fail them all! If they can't do the work, fail them. Geez, colleges are soft. Is this a humanities problem, or across all fields? Because I WANT my surgeon and my airline pilot to have an attention span longer than two friggin' hours. Lord preserve us. Posted by: LizLem at February 03, 2026 04:06 PM (gWBY1) 41

Disney is in a box.
You can't have both a successful streaming platform and big box office returns, one cannibalizes the other. Someone into Disney offering just waits a few weeks. And then you have the issue that families drop the Disney streamer as the kids age out of it. Mine did. Even renting a movie was an "investment", you had to get it back to the store. Also the act of browsing and picking it up, you wanted it all to pay off.
--- This is why I go to the movies. No distractions. Full commitment. And of course big screen, big sound, big popcorn. (OK, I can easily outpace movie popcorn.) When I used to watch movies on streaming, I'd spend all my time looking at the options. lol Posted by: moviegique (buy my books) at February 03, 2026 04:18 PM (asXVI) 90

I don't really love movies, but I know my attention span has waned significantly based in part on my movie watching habits. I used to sit through the boring scenes. Now I get a feel for what's going on and skip. When an irrationally angry character starts their irrationally angry rant, I know where it's going and skip forward. When a lonely person starts staring off in the distance, watching scenery go by, I skip forward. If it's clear I've missed something, I skip back and catch up. A B-movie in art house clothing.
--- This is canny. The best thing about "The Revenant" is the love story. --- A guy goes hunting and sees a huge bear. He takes aim and squeezes the trigger, but misses. The bear approaches the hunter, grabs him and fucks him before letting him go. But the hunter vows revenge. He goes out to the same spot the next day, sees the same bear, takes aim and fires. Again, he misses and again, the bear fucks him. The hunter borrows a friend’s rifle the next day. He heads out to his favourite spot and sees the bear again. He gets the bear in his sights, shoots and misses. So the bear says “You didn’t come here to hunt, did you?” Posted by: moviegique (buy my books) at February 03, 2026 04:39 PM (asXVI) 202

The Jason one with the hick mom and her ridiculous, fat son were the absolute worst. Whichever that version was is so laughable.
=== That would be Part V: A New Beginning. They had killed Jason in Part IV, with the laughable (but very common '80s slasher trope) that a child (Corey Haim) was going to become the new Jason because of the trauma associated with seeing the old Jason at work. Part V plays that out in one of the most unpleasant experiences across 11 movies as the now grown child is haunted by visions of Jason. Is he killing people? Is he going crazy? Who cares! Then in VI they go "Well, that didn't work. Let's have a larf." And produces the most watchable film of the lot. Posted by: moviegique (buy my books) at February 03, 2026 04:55 PM (asXVI) 321

del Toro's Frankenstein is quite faithful to the book.
--- While getting it completely backwards and making the monster a superhero. --- I re-watched the Francis Ford Coppola version right after I read the book last year. It was a painful experience... --- The Coppola "Dracula" may be my favorite, down to him calling it "Bram Stoker's Dracula" because he set out to be the most faithful adaptation, and immediately started talking about Dracula's origin story (gleaned, as far as I can tell, from two lines in the book about Drac's origin). I read all of Stokers' works when re-writing "Lair of the White Worm," and learned then that he probably never had heard of Vlad the Impaler, and that Dracula was based on his boss, the famous actor Henry Itving. Fight me! --- No. I find "Life Force" fascinating. Nineteen-year-old Mathilda May walks around starkers with a complete command of everything and everyone. Unfortunately, she goes away about 45 minutes in. Posted by: moviegique (buy my books) at February 03, 2026 05:07 PM (asXVI) 388
Jackie Brown is probably Tarantino's best -- mostly I think because he was fairly faithful to Elmore Leonard's story (the novel Rum Punch). Sure, he race switched the main character but that wasn't a big deal for that story and IIRC Elmore Leonard liked the casting when Tarantino told him about it. Tarantino's originals can be fun, but on his own he ain't up to Elmore Leonard.

I spent the entirety of "Inglorious Basterds" groaning in pain. It was so dull and so predictable and uninspired.
I don't know why. I should =love= QT but I don't. Like Scorsese. A friend lent me Kill Bill on DVDs and I could not pay attention to it. I sat through "Grindhouse". "Planet Terror" was the only time I've ever thought Rodriguez was boring. "Death Proof" had a great chase scene, but you had to sit through four girls pretending to care about "Vanishing Point" for 20 minutes to get there. Last, I saw "Pulp Fiction." And...I enjoyed it! IDK, go figger. I think I'd like "Reservoir Dogs" but I might just go see the HK movie he ripped off.
