The gym I go to is a classic example of this - people use a piece of gym equipment for a minute or two, and then spend 5-15 minutes scrolling on their phones while sitting on the equipment.
The gym used to have signs up asking people not to do this, but they have apparently given up.
(I don't bring my phone to the gym.)

You can't have both a successful streaming platform and big box office returns, one cannibalizes the other. Someone into Disney offering just waits a few weeks.
And then you have the issue that families drop the Disney streamer as the kids age out of it. Mine did.
And then you have the issue that you're actively pissing off about half the country with culture war nonsense. So expect less expensive trips to Disneyland parks.

If it really is 5 - 15 minutes, that's excessive. But when I'm lifting heavy, I'm often waiting 2-3 minutes between sets. I'm not going to stare at the wall, that's dumb. I'll look at my phone. But I have a timer that I set for my 2 or three minutes and I'm right back to work when it goes off.
I'm also quick to offer to let people work in if I can see they're waiting. So far, I've never had someone accept.

Even renting a movie was an "investment", you had to get it back to the store. Also the act of browsing and picking it up, you wanted it all to pay off.
With streaming, you just stop in the middle and pickup whenever. I'll start and stop things all the time. And then we have our phones that we can't seem to put own. Wasn't an issue pre-2010.
I don't really have a fix, but I liked the way it was better.

I don't really love movies, but I know my attention span has waned significantly based in part on my movie watching habits.
I used to sit through the boring scenes. Now I get a feel for what's going on and skip. When an irrationally angry character starts their irrationally angry rant, I know where it's going and skip forward. When a lonely person starts staring off in the distance, watching scenery go by, I skip forward. If it's clear I've missed something, I skip back and catch up.
I don't do this when I'm watching something with other people. If I'm by myself though, hell yeah.

Bingo. I meant to bring this up in the book thread but feel the same way; even a 300 page book I used to consume whole takes me weeks; immediate gratification for movies is hard to maintain for 90 minutes.
I don't feel so all alone about attention span anymore but am not happy with it.

I was not clear above -- I love discussion and disagreement and learning. What I hate is when it is is impossible because you are watching a video and not talking to someone. So it is one direction and that is fine, but I have studied movies since the 80s and I think I know a bit.

I'm not saying this is related. BUT, it's related. Rare is the day when driving in an urban location do I not see someone stop at a red light, wait a bit, and then just continue on before the light turns green.

I have no idea why so many people loved that movie so much. It's clever-ish, but not that great. The little detail clue that puts the inspector on the killer is ridiculous and has 1,000 alternate explanations for that character. There's a lot of woke garbage too. I think general consensus is the first one is good, but the next ones aren't. I disagree with the consensus. I don't think the first one's good.

I would say his most expertly crafted film is Inglorious Basterds.

That would be Part V: A New Beginning.
They had killed Jason in Part IV, with the laughable (but very common '80s slasher trope) that a child (Corey Haim) was going to become the new Jason because of the trauma associated with seeing the old Jason at work.
Part V plays that out in one of the most unpleasant experiences across 11 movies as the now grown child is haunted by visions of Jason. Is he killing people? Is he going crazy? Who cares!
Then in VI they go "Well, that didn't work. Let's have a larf." And produces the most watchable film of the lot.

The Coppola "Dracula" may be my favorite, down to him calling it "Bram Stoker's Dracula" because he set out to be the most faithful adaptation, and immediately started talking about Dracula's origin story (gleaned, as far as I can tell, from two lines in the book about Drac's origin).
I read all of Stokers' works when re-writing "Lair of the White Worm," and learned then that he probably never had heard of Vlad the Impaler, and that Dracula was based on his boss, the famous actor Henry Itving.

I put Reservoir Dogs in the same camp as A Clockwork Orange, once you've seen, if you are a normal well adjusted person, there is no reason to watch it again.
Jackie Brown is his most grounded, non-fantasy film.
My favorite films in order are..
KB 1, KB2, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds.
That's it.
I really hope he keeps to his promise of making 10 films and being done, because I really don't think he has much more to say as a film maker.
Spike Lee is actually a better filmmaker than QT.

I find "Life Force" fascinating. Nineteen-year-old Mathilda May walks around starkers with a complete command of everything and everyone. This, somehow, works, and apparently was reflective of the set. She was way more comfortable being naked than others were being around her when she was naked.
Unfortunately, she goes away about 45 minutes in.

When Tarantino steals from better filmmakers, it's out of love (time jumping in Pulp Fiction is lifted directly from Kubrick in The Killing, the cruel master of kung fu Pai Mei from multiple Hong Kong films etc).
Lee steals from Scorsese and Laughton's The Night of the Hunter because he's a racist hack who doesn't have an original idea in his little midget pea brain.

I can watch almost all of his movies on a whim (except Reservoir Dogs) but if i had to pick a favorite..Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Brad Pitt's character destroying the three k*llers at the end just cheers me up every time I watch it. Equal Rights in real life..and equal lefts...and equal bash your face into a phone. One of my favorite fight scenes.

A friend lent me Kill Bill on DVDs and I could not pay attention to it.
I sat through "Grindhouse". "Planet Terror" was the only time I've ever thought Rodriguez was boring. "Death Proof" had a great chase scene, but you had to sit through four girls pretending to care about "Vanishing Point" for 20 minutes to get there.
Last, I saw "Pulp Fiction." And...I enjoyed it!
IDK, go figger. I think I'd like "Reservoir Dogs" but I might just go see the HK movie he ripped off.
