213 It's interesting that there is a tendency to sanitize or even romanticize prostitution.

Rather than a young woman trying to earn her way through med school or flirting with a shy schoolboy or a Julia Roberts romancing Richard Gere, a prostitute is more likely to be a drug addict supporting a habit, or a trafficked immigrant trying to pay off the coyote who brought her across the border. Or a mentally ill transgender, giving blow jobs in a train station. Or an underaged runaway servicing a never-ending line of Bulgarian workmen for the Russian mafia. Abused both physically and psychology.

Truly a sordid thing.

On the other hand, Barbara Stanwyck (a far better actress than Davis, in my opinion) was very patient with basket-case Monroe in that Fritz Lang noir that they were both in, with Robert Ryan. When reporters asked Stanwyck her opinion of Monroe she simply said, "With a figure like that, you don't need to act."

Not really contradicting Bette's position, but putting a positive spin on it.

263 The National Gallery

A man offers gold coins and jewelry to woman lying on a bed – a carving of Cupid, the god of erotic love, on the bedpost in the foreground removes any doubt that it is an amorous encounter. The glass of wine would also have been associated with licentious behavior. Whether this is a transaction taking place in a brothel or a gift from an enamored lover is not explicit, but the coins strongly imply that it’s a commercial exchange.

Schalcken often painted candlelit scenes and here the warm glow casts the woman in a flattering light and emphasizes the softness of the pillow behind her. But it also highlights some hard, worldly realities: the gold glittering in the man’s hand, the pearls of the woman’s necklace – an expensive piece of jewelry – and the costly gold braid on her dress.

A Candlelight Scene: A Man offering a Gold Chain and Coins to a Girl seated on a Bed
Artist: Godfried Schalcken
Artist dates: 1643 - 1706
Date made: About 1665-70
Medium and support: Oil on copper

A well done painting but the model looks so young, it's sad (to me) but probably realistic long ago for the better classes of such working women.

Would pass hanging.

Thank you.

Probably not, because then they'd have insane people on Tik Tok threatening to poison them. I'm guessing that you're a nurse or doctor or teacher who isn't leftist you can only reveal non leftist opinions to those you trust or keep it out of your work, because what does it have to do with being in a healing profession anyway, unless it's about transgender mutilation of kids and those people who do that are insane money grabbers anyway.

282 273 Not always. Davis was the queen of it, but Barbara Stanwyck seldom, if ever, overacted.

I was surprised when I first saw The Agony and the Ecstasy. With Heston and Rex Harrison as the stars, I figured the scenery was gonna get chewed like a cud. To my pleasant surprise, both actors toned it down, and their pairing actually worked.

366 However... If the viewer is left wondering what the hell is going on because the scene is too dark to see more than a tiny little part of the work, his skill may be questionable.

This is actually a tech problem. Modern LCD flatscreens are garbage at depicting low light scenes compared to the picture tubes we used to have. That’s part of why they’re extremely cheap. OLED screens do much better but also more expensive. The painting is easily visible on my iPhone, for instance.

388 >>> Heh... like June Carter hovering around when a young Linda Ronstadt was on the Johnny Cash show, finally ordering one of the staff to "go out and buy that girl some drawers".

Back when Joaquin was prepping to play Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, he spent time with Johnny and June. He asked Johnny one day what heaven is like, or what his perfect day would be, or something like that. And Johnny, almost not missing a beat, pointed at June, busy in the kitchen, and told him:

"Coffee. In the morning. With her."

That has stuck with me all these years. Love it.

But even though Johnny adored her, people are merely human, and he wasn't a saint. And June of all people knew that! Thanks for the story.

392 329. Why are nurses in the crosshairs of immigration enforcement?
Posted by: TheJamesMadison

Not Yodaette but the internet says things such as:

As of January 20, 2025, the U.S. government rescinded a long-standing policy that protected "sensitive areas" like hospitals, clinics, and schools from immigration enforcement actions.

Approximately 1.1 million healthcare workers are foreign-born non-citizens, including many nurses, nursing assistants, and home care workers. The removal of protected status has placed these critical staff members at high risk for detention and deportation, exacerbating staffing shortages.

Nurses are caught between their ethical obligation to provide care to all patients, regardless of status, and the legal requirement to comply with immigration enforcement.

Immigrant-heavy care facilities, particularly in home care and nursing homes, are losing staff due to deportation fears, which directly threatens the safety of the patients they serve.

Justifiable Medicare, Medicaid fraud. (kidding)

Vice versa, as a young tween, Lauren Bacall had a crush on Bogart from the movie magazines before she ever acted. Wyler put the two together.

I'm probably going to be willowed, but -

In that movie, there is a scene where Merman, Berle and Terry-Thomas are fighting at the side of the road, when Jack Benny drives by and asks if they need help.

As it turns out, that part was actually supposed to be a cameo by Stan Laurel, which is why Benny is wearing a derby (they had shot his car arriving, but used a stand-in). Laurel, however, stuck to his resolve never to do a movie without Oliver Hardy, so the bit went to Benny.
