Honestly, this painting is a little too bright and happy looking to convey it's subject matter.

Looks more like "A Prayer Before the Picnic in the Garden"

76 For something painted in the early 1500s, this has a 20th century feel: Basic distinct colors, simple poses, even the flowers in the foreground look like some modern simplification of plants. None of the over the top subtle techniques of painting that might have been usual in later centuries. The story provides the power of the moment for the viewer. Although it isn't a huge part of the image, the expression on Christ's face is the key. The usual word, as in the title, is agony. I think this moment is about His acceptance of what must be, painful as it is, and that is perhaps harder to endure.

My comments on the art thread show my immediate reaction. I wonder what I would say if I studied the painting for a few days.

There used to be a restaurant in my area that had a giant portrait of Jesus over the door, only he was made to look extremely feminine and was giving bedroom eyes.

I don't know if that was on purpose, but either way it was extremely bizarre.

Don't get me wrong...special elections are not predictive of the next general election. They simply are not. You can't get meaningful information from a 15% turnout election to predict a 67% turnout election (or, sometimes, 85%). The electorates are simply different. That 15% isn't a random sample of the larger electorate. It's not predictive.

The high propensity voters are now Democrats. That's just the world we live in.

Mitt Romney won us the high propensity voters but lost us the low propensity voters. Trump does the opposite.

Not even Obama's team could figure out how to turn low propensity voters into high ones (that's why they got blown out in the midterms, the low props didn't show up). Trump flipped that.

We either salve our wounds with the fact that Trump now controls immigration enforcement, or we have to dismantle the electorate that made that possible so we can win less important races.

The best we can do is try to turn low propensity voters into regular voters on an individual level.

There is (or was) an ebb and flow to politics. Democrats had held the presidency for four (4) straight terms. For that reason alone, it’s a bit of a stretch. The electorate will simply say “let’s try the other guys for a while”. And then they remember why they hate the other guys, too. But the principle is a sound one.

To me it looks like the Democrats wanted to short circuit this natural ebb and flow, and prevent the Nixon Reagan style of wipeout.

Note well they no longer concern themselves with tacking to the center after a good shellacking, something last seen in the 1990s with Clinton. They don’t think they need to, and if they can steal elections, they are probably right. Very convenient, that.

252 As someone who has worked with state and local GOP parties in the past, they are a very insular group. You have the iron triangle of special interests reflected in donations, the campaign consultants, and the party executive directors.

If outsiders take over a local party operation, they find it stripped of any money and no ability to raise money nor operate. If they take over a state operation, then you get the same fight by insider GOPe types to subvert and destroy what they cannot control by lawfare and any other means.

Those interest groups shelling out money in state and local races expect to get their money's worth in access and legislation/contracts. The campaign consultants despise volunteers because they get very little compensation to manage them. Instead, they get a share of media ad placements, often own the robocall monstrosities, and get a chunk from mailers win or lose. Voter mobilization is the last thing on their mind--they still run the same campaigns as they did in the 00's.

Old story about Chicago's party system regarding volunteers--"We don't want nobody that nobody sent" (Abner Mikva).

They also bear in mind that when Iger got replaced the first time, the new CEO got removed from office by daring to challenge Iger's and his yes men's ideas. Disney needs to cast its broadcast and declining cable properties off now to invest in its streaming, movies, and parks, but I don't know if the Iger yes men will allow that.

Disney also needs to can the woke bit for movies and parks and offer value again to families with children.

Elderly Disney adult groupies, perverts, and foreigners are probably going to be a declining market going forward. Sticking with those values is likely to not produce growth going forward. Once again, Iger's yes men inside the company are likely to try to remove a CEO that dares to move Disney that way.

Death of a Salesman, while trying to be a social commentary on the times, does address that poignant issue of aging and longing for a past mythical time when anything seemed possible.

Something that might be of interest to you is trying to capture that lost halcyon days of youth in short stories about different events in your youth and understanding you as a youth in relation to you as now. If you have children, they might be interested in that in the future, but even if no one else is interested, you will have gotten to revisit your memories, good and bad of a past age inaccessible any other way.

I can understand your point of view. Renaissance Man more or less dealt with that same topic. Probably DeVito's best film along with Other People's Money and Tin Men.

Zero Hour! was Airplane's script more or less without the added jokes.

Joyce's stylistic meanderings are a heavy mask on the point of the narrative, but piercing it ends up worthwhile to a degree.

English majors only apply, though.

Finnegan's Wake, now...I tried. I really tried. I think I got 30 pages into it before I gave up.

I found Churchill's A History of the English Speaking Peoples far more interesting than Joyce.

And a typical O Henry short story has more heart and humor than Joyce ever showed me.

Helpful tip: when playing that common bar game "name all of the Magnificent Seven actors", start with Brad Dexter, because that's the guy that everyone gets hung up on.

Funny thing though, when I consider Dexter's performances I always remember him as the American POW sergeant in Von Ryan's Express. Mainly because he's a fat guy playing a POW. He has to suck in his flabby gut even more than I do.

I'm terrified of retirement from work later this year.

As a young adult I was at workaholic in the software industry and hated it -- kept quitting jobs and searching for something else (should have learned a trade and become my own boss as I am now).

Worked through an interesting book called "Zen and The Art of Making a Living."

Just dug that out of storage during the past 30 years to review and try and regain & recapture that youthful inquisitiveness ... in search of new purpose

They could have given Lupita Nyong'o the part of Circe, a huge big major role in Odyssey, and she'd have Oscar'd for sure.

There's more than one narrative being violated here.
I dread their take on The Aeneid. Carthage is in Africa -- and "Dido" is hard for us to spell IYGWIM.
