Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant![]() Warsh said in October 2024 that the central bank has routinely shifted the goalposts for measuring inflation—from average inflation targeting to core inflation ex-housing—and how it conducts policy. “They don’t seem to have a serious theory of inflation that is theoretical and empirical. It is not obvious that they acknowledge what their role is in prices,” Warsh told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “I think in a world this dangerous, an economic policy where fiscal policy is irresponsible, the central bank needs to be very clear about its reaction function, be clear about its goals, and not look like it is lurching—that’s what put us in the mess we have.” "Lurching" is a perfect word. There is no coherent policy...it is simply reactive, and based more on perception and politics than any objective measures. “Moving markets with rolling Fed incantations is tempting, but unhelpful to the Fed’s deliberations, and ultimately, to its mission,” Warsh said last year. “The central bank should find new comfort in working without applause and without the audience at the edge of its seats.” Even better! And Mr. Warsh, while you are at it, perhaps you can stomp on the out-of-control spending on the insanely expensive and deeply offensive renovation of the Fed building. Posted by: whig at February 03, 2026 10:59 AM (2swu2) I'm probably going to be willowed, but - In that movie, there is a scene where Merman, Berle and Terry-Thomas are fighting at the side of the road, when Jack Benny drives by and asks if they need help. As it turns out, that part was actually supposed to be a cameo by Stan Laurel, which is why Benny is wearing a derby (they had shot his car arriving, but used a stand-in). Laurel, however, stuck to his resolve never to do a movie without Oliver Hardy, so the bit went to Benny. Apparently the Trump ballroom is going to come in under budget. Trump said he will put the funds leftover towards the triumphal arch he's building on one of the DC roundabouts, to honor the 250th anniversary. Powell went totally off the rails, maintaining that tariff's cause inflation. Completely ignoring that 1) they are a tax, which is a recessionary pressure, not an inflationary one; and 2) the total cost of tariffs have never been borne by the end user.
He knew both of these things. He should have been fired the minute he said it for being incompetent in his position. I gave him a bit of leeway when he finally couldn't go along with the transitory inflation bullshit Biden foisted on us once he took office. It's only a couple of billion down tge tubes, small potatoes compared to the national effects their actions have, but man -- the arrogance, the above-it-all sanctimony... So, is quantitative easing going to be phased out? Is the nation going to stop creating trillions of dollars a year out of nothing, and spending it? Is the national debt ever going to start being a smaller number each year, instead of a bigger one? The Fed is basically classic communism and government market controls masquerading as some kind of free market safety mechanism. Is it any wonder the Fed descended into bitter partisan political hackery? I've long thought that interest rates should be set by the market, and not a motley gaggle of unaccountable egghead retards sucking their own dicks. Posted by: Judge Elric The Blade at February 03, 2026 11:10 AM (iFTx/) == As long as you do start over - because the economic upheavals we experienced before the Fed were terrible, wild swings and mini-depressions due to currency shortages, among other things. I think if you charted out the Fed actions now, what you would find is that they cut rates too late, creating recessions that didn't need to be. To the extent they engage in all the other stuff they do that impacts real rates, they need to realize more quickly when they have made money too expensive. The Epstein thing is yet another example where elites can commit any crime and get away with it
The demand to release the files then largely comes from the fact that none of these people are getting prosecuted. If we didn't have two standards of justice and Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, etc were behind bars right now there would be little demand to release the files Posted by: 18-1 at February 03, 2026 11:18 AM (sKqQm) 81

Good heavens! I've paid no attention. ...costs ballooned from an initial $1.9 billion to over $2.5 billion, with estimates reaching $3.1 billion. Set for completion in 2027, the project is criticized for luxury upgrades, likened to the "Palace of Versailles." Reportedly, factors cited for the massive budget increase include inflation, tariffs, asbestos removal, and the switch to premium materials, such as marble facades. However, the Federal Reserve is self-funding its $2.5 billion headquarters renovation in Washington D.C., rather than using taxpayer-funded congressional appropriations. The project, covering the Eccles & 20th Street buildings, is paid by using interest income from government securities. 🤷♀️ I recall behind the scenes the Kennedy Center was a dump lacking repair and maintenance; asbestos was being removed in limited rooms and spaces; broken flooring and piping were common, etc. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at February 03, 2026 11:21 AM (NFX2v) 94

Spain has a current population of 49 million. It has increased since 2000 from about 40 million. This increase is almost entirely from third world nations. About 19 percent of the population is foreign born. That's does not include their children, which are at least another 10% of the population. And like the rest of the West, the native Spaniards are only making half the babies necessary to maintain current population. And now the govt. have legalized another 500,000 illegals in one fell swoop just to spike the ball in the faces of anybody that doesn't like this state of affairs. I had no idea Spain was so screwed. Once interviewed for a research assistant job at the Fed. Cafeteria was roof-top, but nothing terribly posh. Still, sort of didn't like the feel of the place and the whole thing. But that was nothing compared to being around other young people working for the World Bank. The most ridiculously, almost implausibly arrogant, coddled and clueless demo I encountered in DC (which is a high bar). And later, being around more senior WB tanks, wow, the crude, stupid, virulent anti-Americanism among some of the furriners, and of course the clueless smug NPR-level disdain of the Americans.

Besides, how can you have an accounting where the unit of account isn’t defined? Good luck trying to measure anything, much less inflation. It’s just robbery over time.
Posted by: Progressives ====== The problem with silver and gold is that their production is not related to economic growth or the lack thereof in a nation. Spain had plenty of gold and silver for at time and it ruined their economy and spurred horrendous inflation spilling over to Europe. Gold and silver prices caused all sorts of economic distortions along with world wide booms and busts according to distribution and mining. Also led to a lot of wars specifically to conquer or obtain those metals. A sci fi writer, Christopher Stasheff, based his fiat currency on energy as in kilowatt hours. Not a bad basis as far as energy is life, economics, etc. and a growing economy naturally generates more energy than a moribund one. Hard to devalue a kilowatt hour either. In a way, crypto is actually a proxy for energy inputs and the capital expenditures on computers to generate it. But, the question as to whether crypto is vulnerable to quantum computing is not answered yet. Posted by: whig at February 03, 2026 11:42 AM (2swu2) 196

We really need to use the term invasion in regards to massive immigration more.
People look at conflicts like WWII as a model for what an invasion looks like where a foreign army comes in, beats your army and puts up its flag. This is historically unusual. Most of the time invasion were a process where a new tribe came into your lands and if you couldn't force them away they would claim what had been your lands. By the very language of the act that created the Fed, the president does have the power to fire Powell.
It's just that Humphrey's Executor, a judicial opinion, disagrees. Posted by: TheJamesMadison ===== Humphreys was fired specifically for no cause whatsoever and most interestingly his lawsuit dealt with back pay for the remainder of the term (he died before Scotus got around to ruling). The old remedy for an unjust firing of a regulatory bureaucrat was to pay the remainder of the salary and benefits for the term of office, not to order reinstatement. That judicial aggrandizement came later. Arguably Powell with his cost overruns and apparent dishonesty before Congress can be fired for cause as the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 clearly provides. Same with Lisa Cook. A dishonest central banker cannot be a regulator of banks nor of monetary policy. And having courts decide what constitutes cause is a major separation of powers issue. Twould be far better to simply provide that a president must give cause publicly in any order firing an executive official. The unjust firing can be remedied by money ordered by the courts rather than interfering with executive power itself. Posted by: whig at February 03, 2026 11:51 AM (2swu2) 233

Here's the thing about Nolan's "Odyssey": If your making a Greek classical story with primarily Greeks in all the other roles- Why throw in a black woman in a role for an iconic Greek woman? Make her Circe? Sure, why not? Nothing particularly Greek about her. Or, make an African based "Odyssey". Yeah, kinda off kilter. But, that works too. No one said Boo! about Kurosawa's adaptation of MacBeth, "Throne of Blood", which had all Japanese actors. Kurosawa didn't throw a Caucasian or black guy or gal in the mix to placate some meddlesome goofballs. Or, make "Space Odyssey" with aliens out the wazoo. Again no one cares. Tis a blessing and a curse but picking a fight with the markets AND the banksta owned Senators of GOPe is a bridge not worth crossing when Powell is gone anyway in a couple of months. Same Trump tendencies are causing heartburn to ideologues in foreign affairs--removing Maduro but leaving the other, not siding much with either Russia or Ukraine, frustrating Israel on Gaza but at the same time smashing the nuclear sword of Iran.

At this point, Native American tribes need to start taking land back that people who own it say is stolen.
They try, after on set of tribal elders sell it to some dumb white farmer and he improves the land to the point it's worth taking so the next set of tribal elders say "All the land on the rez should belong to the tribe, give it back", but the courts always say "You sold it fair and square, if you want it so bad buy it back". And somehow despite all the casino money, they won't come up with the money to actually do that, "because it's ooooooour land (and never mind that we sold it and apparently can't grok the concept of a 99 year lease)" In short, only a complete idiot buys land within the bounds of the rez, and I don't care how good the farmland is.
