The Morning Rant
New York's Democratic Socialist Party Mayor Zohran Mamdani thinks that these special programs that elevate some kids over others based on talent and gifts are an abomination and need to end. Catering to the lowest common denominator in education, the workplace, and government is how socialists keep everything nice and equal — equally mediocre, at least.NYers raise a stink over trash buildup as 'limited collection' continues 7 days after winter storm: 'It's disgusting' Cold Death Toll Hits 17 as Deep Freeze Continues It doesn't really matter that only about a quarter of eligible voters bothered to vote in the mayoral election. Not voting is a decision just like voting for one's preferred candidate. NYC got what it wanted, and the consequences of that will reverberate for the next four years. Gutting the cream of the public schools because too few blacks and other pressure groups can get their kids into those schools is absolutely expected, but will be a painful surprise to the willing fools who voted for Mamdani. Decaying public service (and it was bad before!) was baked into Mamdani's policy cake, but far too few people actually spent the time to figure out what those policies were. Actual death! That wasn't in his campaign speeches, but anybody who didn't expect this is a fool. New York City will enjoy four years of chaos, hyper-politicized administrative decisions that bolster Mamdani's political beliefs but penalize NYC, an increasingly vicious tone directed against Jews, Christians, Whites, the well-off, and anyone else who doesn't fit neatly into the top of the grievance hierarchy. Hopefully they will leave, and NYC will cascade into insolvency, because the top of the grievance hierarchy doesn't pay taxes! And even if NYC can muddle through without a financial catastrophe, the quality of life will decay significantly, and it will take a generation to repair it. Just take a look at how long the horror of the 1970s and 1980s took to be banished! And that's assuming that there will be a tax base to finance it, and that is by no means a given. So...visit NYC if you want, because it won't be better than it is today for a very long time, and there is a long, dark night coming! [Crossposted at CutJibNewsletter and X/Twitter]. Fairfax Co. here in NoVa has been doing that for decades. Not only have they completely gutted the criteria for admission to Thomas Jefferson HS for S and T, they've largely abolished the GT programs by making the criteria so loose and subjective that it's a shadow of its former self. Ask me how I know.

You can't drag people off the street if they don't want to leave. Of the people who died that were actually named, they were approached but refused to leave. Traffic is already insane. I can't imagine 10 or 20% population growth. And the transplants bring their shitty voting habits with them.

I'm drilling holes because I haven't yet tried designing PCBs in CAD and sending the design files to a PCB fab and having them make the darn things for me. That's the best way to go, and I'll get around to it someday.
The next step after that is joining the tapeout crowd, and designing my own chips. Maybe I'll learn that before I croak.

My wife has had innumerable problems with this. She hyphenated her maiden name because your publication list is very important for a scientist's career so you want to maintain continuity. She used my name for non-work stuff. She's seen every possible variation on those names, with and without hyphen, misspelled, maiden name as middle name, etc. I'd wager we've seen 10 different (and incorrect) variations

Consolidate elections and reduce the number of offices that people vote for. Americans vote more than any other country with primaries, runoffs, municipals, special elections, off year state elections, etc.
Our presidential turnout is decent compared with other nations but it gets worse as you drop down to micro level like municipal special elections, special improvement districts, or bond issues.
The only people voting in that last set of categories are those with a special interest in the vote.

Yes you can. When I lived in Chicago years ago, the cops were authorized to forcibly drag vagrants off the street and take them to a warm place when the temperature fell below a certain level.

Our presidential turnout is decent compared with other nations but it gets worse as you drop down to micro level like municipal special elections, special improvement districts, or bond issues.
The only people voting in that last set of categories are those with a special interest in the vote.

Lots of voters simply ignore the bottom of the ballot because they feel they lack any information as to whom to vote. Making local or state offices non partisan actually removes a key indicator that can be used in low info races by voters like DA, judges, tax offices, clerks of the court, etc. And thus works to the favor of incumbents and to the disadvantage of challengers without a stack of money to publicize the race.

Yes. The wind chills were like -10 to -15 at night here. Insanely, bitterly cold. I'm amazed only 17 ppl died.
Another big problem is there is nowhere for the snow to go. We got over a foot of snow in some places. Streets were immediately plowed, but the snow was piled up in some places over 10 feet high, and burying some parked cars.
And it's been so cold the snow won't melt.

Reevaluation, I think is harder for educated people, because a) they falsely believe that education in one area carries over to another, b) they identify with being 'smart' more than they identify with being 'wise', c) their friends, neighbors, and work mates mean that the group dynamics lead to adopting the group's norms rather than developing their own.
Only cranky misfits like to be alone and even there, most have to play ball to some extent, if only not sharing their views, to avoid being seen as icky in work or socially.

Eh foundation is important. My kids were reading books by the time they entered kindergarten And so were pretty much all their peers. I assume these gifted schools in NYc are like that. Part of the appeal of those schools isn't just the curriculum. It’s being among similar peer groups.

I remember taking the specialized high school test. The math part was fine. I knew how to do the work. The word part was a monster, for me. It was all vocabulary. One half of the test you needed to select the synonym to a given word. The other half was to select the antonym. I don't remember how many total vocabulary words were on the test, but I do know I've never read or heard any of those words before, except for one. I knew the word "amiable" and picked its synonym "friendly". For the rest I had to guess on every question trying to eliminate the obvious wrong answers and what I thought a given word meant. I must have done a great job on it as I got into Stuyvesant.

Okay. It's adjustable so it's as accurate as you are willing to mess with it. I put a dial indicator on it out of the box and it was close enough for the plates I was drilling. Only a couple of thou out. I've really only used it as a vice since. Looking over at it, it isn't even bolted down right now.

Not sure this factoid is true (saw it on X once), but Gov Fat Pritzger said they'd be able to process name changes for illegals to protect them from ICE carrying out deportation orders on them. Which is also opens the door to get extra ballots in the system.

I get it now. Through hole. I've been helping to build humidity sensors this last week. Quite the eye opener. If they would let me drink beer at work I could get my hands steady enough to soldier that stuff.

Or just buy them from Atlas Scientific, where they have several types of really accurate humidity sensors at reasonable prices, along with the code to use them. They have a plug-n-play free software suite that's quite good. Even an abject Moron like me easily used them to build humidity monitors that we use every day in my shop.

I've found that standing on principle, while knowing what you're talking about, eventually leads to a grudging respect among many lefties. They're also a lot more careful about saying stupid things around you, because they don't want to get called on their nonsense and be embarrassed because they're ignorant.

Jeez bud. she's almost 30. He voted for Trump and has no regrets about it. I can bite my tongue for the few times I may encounter her in future gatherings. I just fear that she'll get more vocal and militant with every new cat she acquires...
