Elderly Man Driving Busted Up Truck Was a Joke Meme Until Stranger’s Heart-warming Idea to Crowdfund a New One

His truck was the vehicle equivalent of Frankenstein, a green mish-mash of dents and dings and disjointed panels.
The 2000 Chevy Silverado became something of a famous eyesore in South Bend, Indiana, earning sideways glances and second looks wherever Mo Riles went.

Sure, Mo heard the jokes and saw the sideways glances—but the truck ran just fine. The state of Indiana doesn’t require inspections. And Mo, who worked at a Dollar Tree store, wasn’t in a financial position to upgrade, especially since facing recent health struggles.
So the truck rolled on… at least until Colin Crowel saw the photo. Colin, who owns Carguys Auto Detailing, wanted to do more than joke about the unsightly relic. He figured that whoever was driving it likely needed a pick-me-up, instead of another internet pun.
“I just thought there’s gotta be something more to why this truck looks like this,” Colin said. “I just put two and two together.”
He started a crowdfunding campaign, hoping to raise money for Riles and betting that community support would produce more than social media memes.

The results arrived quickly. Donations poured in from people all over northwest Indiana and beyond. More than 500 people pitched in to raise over $26,000 for Mo.

Opposite end of the spectrum as far as the condition of a vehicle. Need one of you smart car nerds to weigh in here. I've seen several of these types of stories lately, but some are obviously fake. I can't find anything overtly fishy about this one. What say you?

Out of the 2.38 million Chevys sold in 1965, the Impala claimed some 40%. The US domestic automobile production rose to a staggering 8.96 million vehicles that year – and the African gazelle was representing one out every nine of those cars. But the numbers dive drastically when we factor in the 409 powerhouse. With just 2,828 motors made for passenger cars, we’re talking “unicorn eggs” level of rarity.
And that’s just for starters: for the sake of piston-centric fun, let’s add one more bottleneck. Like, say, body style – and I insist that we chose my favorite full-size dress code, the station wagon. Chevrolet didn’t bother fitting people haulers with big-block muscle like it was an all-you-can-eat buffet, so just 82 Impala wagons came with a 409.
I won’t even bother to do the math, it’s more than self-explanatory by now, but I’m not done bringing more rarity into this talk just yet. Of those 82, how many stayed with one family for nearly six decades?

Today, we know that lead and gold are different elements, and no amount of chemistry can turn one into the other.
But our modern knowledge tells us the basic difference between an atom of lead and an atom of gold: the lead atom contains exactly three more protons. So can we create a gold atom by simply pulling three protons out of a lead atom?
As it turns out, we can. But it’s not easy.

66 There sure weren't very many 409s in 65 and danged few in station wagons. The car has wrong hubcaps - those were Chevelle SS types. It is in nice shape. Send it to the big auction in Arizona and see what it's worth.

As much as we all liked hot cars, I don't think anyone I knew would have driven the station wagon!

I'm at the point where if they don't have the common sense to respond with "That sounds great--could we do the Valentine's Dinner Date the night before or the day after?" they're probably not worth the time. Sorry, no intent to be rude, but why does she think the Police tribute band should re-arrange their schedule because she doesn't think it's the right night?

It has been a decade or more since high school chemistry, but I think that 6.02 x 10^23 is the number of atoms it takes to get a macro scale mass (I forget if it's gram or kilogram) equal to the atomic weight of the element in question. The number of anything in an ounce is going to be some other number.

I see a small number of station wagons showing up at cruise nights, but I think its because they are true survivor cars, or at most just got a new paint job. Occasionally you do see a true believer who think people will beat their door down to buy it. I'll never forget this one night a dude showed up with a pinto station wagon that for some unexplainable reason he was trying to hot rod. It ended up breaking down, was leaving a large puddle of oil under it. I said to another dude that maybe we should go see wtf is up. He says I don't have a pinto repair kit. I asked wtf a pinto repair kit was. He says " A can of beer and a hand grenade, pull the pin on the grenade and drink the beer".

Uncle missed one payment so grampstook it from until he paid up. Uncle never paid up... Years later, 85ish, my dad bought it... So it sat in one of his barns. For years with little to work on it. They liquidated everything in about 2000 to downsize. Sold it through local car collector network.

184 The Impala story can very well be true and probably is. My last two car purchases were of a similar nature. I just bought (1/24/26) a 1964 Chevy II Nova, all original with 62k miles. It's 61 years old and looks like it was in a museum. Saturday when I bought it, I drove across Florida 150 miles home and it cruised fine! A couple of upgrades and it's going to be my daughter's daily driver. She has an 'old soul' and wanted a classic car.
I always wanted a Corvette.... well, I found one in South Florida, a 1998 C5 convertible with 8,757 miles. It's almost 30 years old and looks like it just drove out the showroom. They're out there like treasure waiting to be dusted off and driven again.

It is worse than that, the only real trading was in futures and options since actual delivery and storage is a hassle. So Silver stayed in whatever vault it was in and the ownership of each ounce was passed back and forth with the understanding that when the contract came up, it could be covered by selling it again.
But now no one trustst there is sufficient silver to cover the current contracts.
So everyone is demanding delivery, and there may be too little Silver in the world to cover everything that was sold, which means the exchanges may default.

In case nobody posted it, Avocado's (Avogadro's) Number is 6.02 X 10^23 atoms per mole

The molecular (molar) weight of Au is 196.96 gm which converts to about 6.95 oz.

So one ounce of Au is about 1/7 of a mole...

However, in Israel, we have 2-3 other dates on the Hebrew calendar to never forget. Holocaust Remembrance Day seems to be more US- European oriented.

364 Spent the last couple of days slowly removing a mini glacier from my parking space. It's good enough that I can get out now. Except, the car won't start. I'll take care of it later. Probably needs jumped. Cable is on the floor in the back seat. Little annoyed as the battery isn't that old. Got installed in July. Guess it was too cold. It's been in the single digits overnight around here. Not tonight though. Low teens now.

Batteries are crap, anymore... Put a new one in my (2003) truck in May, usually drive it once every week or two. Let it sit for 3 weeks? Nope. Dead. wth? It wasn't even *cold* yet, in early October. Previous battery was a (N)Everstart cheapest of the cheap and had lasted 5 years.

Took a while to charge with jump, but been driving it at least once a week since and no further problems.

368 Oh, another thing Puddleglum-- I tried starting it too soon (not charged enough yet from the jump) and it triggered the 'check engine' light. *shrug* I scanned it, cleared the bogus codes --various sensor malfunctions, probably due to insufficient voltages-- and it hasn't come on again since.

The pattern I noticed with batteries, especially the harley batteries of any brand, is they need to be fully charged before they're put in the vehicle. With the harleys if you don't charge them up to around 13.5 volts they never take a full charge in the bike. I have seen new batteries die in days. Its always the same story. Customer says he bought a new battery and it dies in a week. We asked if it was charged, they say the store told him it was charged. No..no, thats bullshit, and they always say that crap. I charge car batteries before putting them in too.
