Good morning everyone. Power still on. Thank goodness. Was reading my little electric company's Facebook page. They've gone from a high of 5600 without power to a low of 300 and some without power. Tomorrow they have volunteers coming in to help. Bless them . It was a miserable day yesterday. It's going to be cold today but at least the sun will be out.

The device costs an estimated $20,000, and if you have a free source of electricity, a gallon of gas costs around $1.50, though the article doesn't mention exactly how this was calculated.
Since you probably don't have a free source of electricity, a gallon of gas will actually cost between $10 and $30, which is why dinosaurs always win. I have to wonder if the fuel from air machine works better in urban locales with a higher level of air pollution, and what it is doing is as much a form of recycling as synthesis.
On that basis, if it is removing pollutants from the air and you've got lots of solar power acreage but not enough battery capacity to store it all, this might almost make some sense in a virtue signaling way. Kind of like a WALL-E for the air rather than discarded artifacts. Posted by: Epobirs at January 26, 2026 05:31 AM (/0z9K) 34

Of the twenty "little-known words" on the ONT, I have to admit, grudgingly, that I knew only three. Though I have seen "vocable" somewhere, and "interrobang" on the 'Net.
"Tittle" I know from the phrase "a tittle or a jot," usually preceded by "I do not care." Now I need to know what a "jot" is (the noun, not the verb meaning to "set down a note"). Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 26, 2026 06:01 AM (wzUl9) 57

Following winter storms that lashed California with rain and snow in recent weeks, the state is completely free of drought for the first time in 25 years, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

As for my reading, I am alternately bored and annoyed by my book about the "private lives" of Laurence Olivier & Vivien Leigh. I keep wondering how the authors eavesdropped on so many private conversations between LO, VL, and others (though their bibliography is extensive, so maybe their sources contain such details, or such gossip). And they keep hammering the idea that (apparently) 75% of the male stage and movie actors/actresses in the first half of the 20th century were gay or bisexual. Possibly because the two male authors themselves are one or both.

There is a reason to develop small footprint, modular thermo-chemical reactors that can be forward delployed with military units and produce petroleum using waste streams associated with those units. It costs a ton of $$ to move fuel to forward positions, not to mention the exposure to enemy fire.
The cost to produce this "renewable" fuel has to be weighed against the cost of this war time supply chain. However, the only reason for our military to invest in such a technology is its provable mobility, small size, and production capabilities in a close looped environment where the gas produced fuels the technology and still provides fuel for troops in a forward deployed setting. I am intrigued by the notion of making gasoline from atmospheric CO2. By providing a stable medium for storing energy, it solves both the problem of the intermittency of "renewable" energy sources, and the problem of storing that intermittent energy, batteries being a terrible way to store energy. By helping to stabilize atmospheric CO2, it should appeal to the global-warming zealots, and be a candidate for carbon-credit money: Win-win.
I'm sure there's a catch, but it certainly looks like it's worth pursuing. Posted by: Nemo at January 26, 2026 08:38 AM (4RPgu) Processing 0.02, elapsed 0.0182 seconds. |
