Evening and morning, late toilers and early (involuntary?) risers. 'Tis Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished.
There's little wind to speak of outdoors, 59 F. and damp. I managed to find my Workout Motivation the last two mornings -- yesterday I had to seize it and wrestle it to the ground once I dug it out of its burrow. Maybe it will be less difficult to locate and deal with this morning. Whassup? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 23, 2026 04:55 AM (wzUl9) 12

Hitchcock's early thriller The Lady Vanishes is on Movies! now. Featuring a young Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave, it also features the first appearance in movies of those comic-opera (but brave and reliable) Englishmen Charters and Caldicott. They proved so popular they appeared in ten more movies -- not all from the same director. Carol Reed had them in 1940's proto-Bond thriller Night Train to Munich, for instance. And they've been played by other actors in remakes of earlier films they were in.
(On the Munich train in August of '39, Charters is reading a copy of Mein Kampf) Charters: Occurred to me it might shed a spot of light on all this -- how-d'ye-do. . . . I understand they give a copy to all the bridal couples over here. Caldicott (startled): Oh, I don't think it's that sort of book, old man --! Silver spot at $99.23 per oz. That means that an average condition pre-1965 dime has $7.08 worth of silver. Gold at $4945 per oz. The banks have done everything they can to drive the paper price of silver down, and nothing is working, because there is an actual shortage of physical silver in the real world.

Isaiah 26:3-4
3 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. 4 Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal. I like my Gideon's Bible which suggests this as a reading for "peace in time of turmoil." I may have shared this before, but how I got the Bible was a "God incident." Spouse and I were staying at a motel and when we woke up to go someone had tossed the Bible out of their room into the parking lot. I asked the motel owner or manager if I could keep it and he said, "Sure". We have so many books here, but I found it again and I am grateful to God. It's amusing how the weather propagandist's over at the Weather Channel are damn near giddy with excitement at the probability that millions are going to be inconvenienced over the weekend.
• Suffering builds character • Its only the weekend so you can go back to work on Monday and serve the Somalian scammers • Will reduce church attendance • You will have all weekend to reconsider your evil Climate Denialism™ Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at January 23, 2026 07:02 AM (a4flb) 115

A single silver dime has a value of almost $10, based on the spot silver price.
A dime does not have 1/10th oz of silver in it. An average circulated silver dime has 1/14th oz of silver in it. That is where I got the figure quoted. Posted by: An Observation sez Trump is my President at January 23, 2026 07:03 AM (Da7Vv) 117

I'm back from a short workout. Mist in the air -- my eyes and hair felt wet! -- 59 F., almost no wind. It's time now for breakfast!
After my supply run to Walmart, I may stop by my favorite coffee shop/grill and treat myself to a coffee and a slice of pie or cake. Since it'll rain on Saturday and Sunday and then freeze, there'll be no point to even rinsing off the car. The tires are aired to 35, which will mean they'll be about 33 when the temps drop. Milk? I have the last of some soy "milk" Miss Linda got via coupon, and a large bottle of a creamy oat "milk" too. The expiration date on these things is sometime in March. If the ancient Egyptians had known about preservatives like our food today, they wouldn't have needed to wrap the Pharaohs' corpses.

Though to be fair Intel showed off new consumer products at CES when AMD and Nvidia couldn't be bothered, and the integrated graphics on Intel's latest Panther Lake chips looks to be faster than AMD's fastest mainstream models (though slower than the Ryzen AI Max if you use it for gaming and not AI.)
+++ Which might end up keeping Intel alive when the AI bubble collapses. The other AI majors - nVidia, AMD, Broadcom, Microsoft, Google, etc. - are all going to weather the storm, too - though they may see a permanent loss of enterprise value like Cisco did after the dotcom bubble. Intel, however, is so weak and so strained that it might not if it has too many eggs in that basket. If I were an investor, I'd be pleased to see that Intel is still taking its other markets seriously. It's going to need to be positioned well in them when the other majors start to scramble for position post-bubble. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 23, 2026 07:14 AM (GyQIQ) 136
