In high school I took a movie class. Which was fun. The teacher had an Oscar party at his house and invited all the students. I went because there were a lot of girls in the class and I figured it was a good way to chat them up in a social setting outside school.
It’s the one and only time I ever watched the Oscars. And I did’t even really watch that closely. I remember Marisa Tomei won for My Cousin Vinny and all the girls loved it because she was and I quote “so cute”. Posted by: Really?? at February 02, 2026 10:22 AM (qpQFJ) 212

Without the usual snark, the artist is seriously talented. The women are all beautifully proportioned, the skin tones are subtle and varied and their postures are natural. He even brings out differences in personality. Yes, it's all romanticized but retains a level of naturalness. And, honestly, it's just enjoyable to look at.
The way the women are shown and proportioned reminds me, strongly, of the nudes in Frank Frazetta paintings. That is a compliment. His Wiki page shows 20 of his works. 18 of them are nudes with this same feel. It says he died in 1896 at age 45. Can't help wondering if he wore himself out. From Dark Gloomy Art: The painting "Les Nymphes" by Luis Ricardo Falero, created in approximately 1878, depicts a group of nymphs engaging in various activities in a nocturnal, serene landscape. The scene is set by a body of water, illuminated by a subtle light that reflects off the water's surface and highlights the figures. The nymphs are portrayed in different poses: some are standing, others sitting or reclining, and one is playfully perched on another's shoulders. Their interactions suggest a sense of camaraderie and ease within their natural surroundings. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a way that guides the viewer's eye across the canvas. The painter's skill is evident in the rendering of the human form, the play of light on skin, and the overall tranquil atmosphere that is both idyllic and sensuous. Falero's attention to detail and ability to capture the mythical quality of these figures are central to the painting's aesthetic and thematic essence. I know nothing of the artist but it's a well done painting. I'll pass hanging. TU Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at February 02, 2026 10:53 AM (NFX2v) 341

Sports is being propped up by gambling. Indeed, if you watch even 10 minutes of almost any pro sports, you'll wonder if the entire sport isn't there just to facilitate betting. I don't know if that is sustainable.

304 They do not disappoint:
After huge snowstorm Penn climate scientists warn about … global warming Keeping with this, the University of Pennsylvania student paper The Daily Pennsylvanian decided to go to Earth and Environmental Sciences Professor Michael Mann, who said the recent snow makes “clear” the “impact of human-caused warming.” “In regions that experience these stronger storms, we can expect extreme cold — and indeed, in some places, even record cold — even as the planet continues to warm dramatically,” Mann said. https://is.gd/KR513g Posted by: Archimedes at February 02, 2026 10:45 AM (Riz8t) Have you read the news 2025 was not the hottest year, ever? I though not. I had to search the website of the ESA climatista agency to learn this. I am not surprised. Note - that site says 2025 was the third warmest tear, evah! The MEDIA will no doubt tell us this (fake) doom news a few weeks after most of the snow and ice melts in the northern US. Posted by: Gref at February 02, 2026 10:56 AM (5rh/l) 351

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at February 02, 2026 10:56 AM (MABZ1) I think gambling is just one of the symptoms of the rot. What is killing sportsball is the same corporatist mentality that is corrupting damn near every institution. Since it's all just a wealth redistribution racket, well then sure, introduce gambling into it. Posted by: BurtTC at February 02, 2026 10:59 AM (nlmQn) 360

I don't know if it's peoples' tolerance for shit or if it's some result of a "music industry" that churns out drivel to fit a music star's persona -- like Greg Brady and Johnny Bravo. But it's all two-chord-progression, drum-machine pap.
There's no Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Genesis, or Fleetwood Mac to crank out their *own music from their *own heads and their *own musical talent. And don't get me started on the insulting gutter crap that is rap "music." Posted by: red speck at February 02, 2026 10:50 AM (Ve/HL) Yeah its all crap. Reason #475636 why I stayed in metal. It can't be faked, you still need to be top of your game to play it, and for the most part it gets better and better. I will say though, some sub genres of it exist that are pure garbage and no doubt infected by the same mentality that took out most other music, but there is a defense perimeter around a sizable solid core, and none shall pass. If you sold 3 paintings a month at 2 grand a painting that would be 72k a year before expenses and taxes. You couldn’t raise a family on that.
And unless you have an agent or are Hunter Biden you ain’t selling that many for that much in a year. That’s why a lot of painters look up to Thomas Kinkade even if the don’t like his paintings. Posted by: Opinion fact at February 02, 2026 11:01 AM (cwGMH) 371
