Yes, I have shopping to do today; we're due for some sharp cold starting Sunday evening. One upside to it is that Miss Linda has had to reschedule our Monday trip to the zoo. She gets free passes from somewhere, so the only cost in $ would be gas for my car. But I'm not looking forward to traipsing around the place for three hours even if the weather is good. It's just tiring to stand and move as slowly as a sloth. The concessions are not cheap, either.

It's also time to buy the oil and filter for the car's next oil change. But I can wait on that until tomorrow or Saturday, I guess. After my trip to IN, where the Buick performed so well, I thought I might splurge on a big-brand oil. But the car won't know -- and Walmart's own Supertech brand, which is in the engine now, meets the same GM specs and is vastly cheaper.

WRT mass layoffs being easier onsite than remote, as I recounted, my wife's friend was downsized from her job a couple of months ago, it was done over a teams call with 10 other people that were being let go.
They even muted and turned off cameras of people that were getting upset. I thought that was wild but in retrospect, I think that way, though cold, is most efficient and reduces potential physical confrontations. Posted by: Thomas Bender at January 22, 2026 05:39 AM (XV/Pl) 45

The manual says to use 5W-30 oil with the Dexos certification. I know there are plenty of solid oils which don't pay for that certification; but it makes for a convenient way to compare the brands. When I finally move farther north, perhaps I'll go to a 0W-30 to deal with starting in cold weather. But a 5W is good down as far as the -20s, something I don't plan on ever seeing. I-65 between Louisville and Elizabethtown, KY was shut down. Numerous spots in the area were the scene of multi-car wrecks, slide-offs and the like. Businesses shuttered before opening. Morning, all.
We are set for whatever weather turns up here in CenTex. They canceled the Wild West Film Festival, though, because of possible ice and will reschedule. At my volunteer job, the owners have okayed a major renovation in our building, which when finished should be a big improvement re: sorting donations and moving merch along. We are in what was a residence of the nursing home and use the two upstairs wings to sort and prep and then sell everything downstairs. So, we sort and store things in the former suites, which is a mess, actually. Things get put in the bathrooms and forgotten, the lighting is not great, traffic gets snarled. This will be better. Although I am wearing a mask while they work on the ceiling b/c who knows what's up there. Posted by: sal at January 22, 2026 06:51 AM (f+FmA) 93
