Top Story

Anthropic - the company behind AI tool Claude - has updated its Claude Constitution, now a sprawling 57 page mess, five times the length of the actual Constitution, which has, for the most part successfully, guided the most powerful nation in history for nearly 250 years. (The Register)

Fortunately we are provided with a summary:
Anthropic hopes that Claude's output will reflect the content of the constitution by being:
1. Broadly safe: not undermining appropriate human mechanisms to oversee AI during the current phase of development;
2. Broadly ethical: being honest, acting according to good values, and avoiding actions that are inappropriate, dangerous, or harmful;
3. Compliant with Anthropic's guidelines: acting in accordance with more specific guidelines from Anthropic where relevant;
4. Genuinely helpful: benefiting the operators and users they interact with.
If Claude is conflicted, Anthropic wants the model to "generally prioritize these properties in the order in which they are listed."
If only someone had given thought to a prioritised list of general rules - laws, you might call them - to govern the behaviour of autonomous thinking machines - robots, essentially - and all the myriad ways in which things might go awry.

Maybe a Boston biochemist in 1942, while we're engaged in idle speculation.

Nvidia is expected to launch its consumer-oriented N1X processor this quarter. (Tom's Hardware)

Nvidia hasn't said anything about this, but eagle-eyed observers have spotted the chip in shipping manifests for test hardware, most recently in a Dell laptop.

He notes that sometimes - sometimes - an AI tool can come up with an elegant solution to a small problem, maybe even a better one than you could have built yourself. But overall, 95% of the code his company creates is still built by humans, because at the end of the day for a system to be reliable, people have to understand it.

I don't know what percentage of homeless have mental health issues, but I suspect the percentage is rather high.

So perhaps we could reframe this as providing government provided, affordable housing for the homeless.
With meals and healthcare provided at no additional cost to the resident of the facility.

They even muted and turned off cameras of people that were getting upset.

I thought that was wild but in retrospect, I think that way, though cold, is most efficient and reduces potential physical confrontations.

The '16 Buick has the big engine, a 3.6 L V-6 that pumps out 300 hp. (Not that I've ever come close to using it all.) The manual says to use 5W-30 oil with the Dexos certification. I know there are plenty of solid oils which don't pay for that certification; but it makes for a convenient way to compare the brands.

When I finally move farther north, perhaps I'll go to a 0W-30 to deal with starting in cold weather. But a 5W is good down as far as the -20s, something I don't plan on ever seeing.

It is heard mentality. People feel safer in numbers. They do the same shit to me in a parking lot. I specifically park as far away from vehicles as possible. I'll come out of the store and suddenly have two or three vehicles parked right next to me.

We use a battery-powered Dremel with a diamond-grit grinding head. The head is hollow cylinder with an open end, so not only is it fast, it dissipates heat much better.

Numerous spots in the area were the scene of multi-car wrecks, slide-offs and the like. Businesses shuttered before opening. Schools closed.

There was no accumulations of snow or ice. Roads that were wet, became "icy," which was expected.

Death Storm 2026 will certainly kill us all....

92 Morning, all.
We are set for whatever weather turns up here in CenTex.
They canceled the Wild West Film Festival, though, because of possible ice and will reschedule.
At my volunteer job, the owners have okayed a major renovation in our building, which when finished should be a big improvement re: sorting donations and moving merch along.
We are in what was a residence of the nursing home and use the two upstairs wings to sort and prep and then sell everything downstairs.
So, we sort and store things in the former suites, which is a mess, actually. Things get put in the bathrooms and forgotten, the lighting is not great, traffic gets snarled.
This will be better.
Although I am wearing a mask while they work on the ceiling b/c who knows what's up there.

94 The weather witchdoctors in Babylon DC are befuddled by this KLIMATE DOOM heading our way. Its going to snow a lot. Or not. Lots of ice. Or not. It will be Arctic cold, that seems definite. Oh well. Hope the car starts Sat and Sun morning. Not sure my little Honda has dealt with a low teens winter yet.
