While the history of art remained an important touchstone and source of inspiration for John Brack throughout his career, The bar is one of few examples of his work in which there is a direct connection to an artistic precedent. Here he restates the subject of Édouard Manet’s famous painting A bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882, in a very contemporary guise, replacing the opulence of 1880s Paris with the dour austerity of 1950s Melbourne. Under the watchful eyes of the stern barmaid, a band of near-identical workers urgently drink their fill before the six o’clock closing that was enforced in Melbourne pubs until 1966.

79 Heh, reminds me of a character in a Dick Francis book I just finished ("Proof") where the main character is visiting local bars to catch a supplier passing off watered down scotch and faked wine. The owner is tall, scary, says everything with a bit of sarcasm, just daring patrons and staff to cross her, lol. Naturally, she had identified that supplier's bad hooch and demanded a full refund long before the police knew there was a crime, because nothing got past her.

82 I look at this painting and only see a very bad New Yorker magazine cover from the 1950s. That is not a compliment. I looked for some of his other paintings in case this one was an aberration. Turns out it's one of his better paintings.

The one redeeming feature is having a bottle of Grand Marnier on the bar. That is a damn nice libation.

That was an interesting observation, one thing I deduced from close reading of history (and photography) is every town of any size had a brewery and offered a local brew. Most had a Coffee importer and roaster, too.

Prohibition, and wartime expedients and post war consolidations - (canned food, instant this, powdered that) pretty much ruined those products for a hundred years. Hipsters like to think they invented beer, or the Starbucks folks that Americans have always drank watered down crap robusta bean coffee. Not so. All it does is seem to show that government jiggery-pokery can cause distortions for a very very long time.

It’s actually a fairly simple game once you understand the basic rules. Difference is there are a lot more versions of the same thing in cricket. Thats where it gets messy. Even suddenly lengths and types of games. Imagine baseball but sometimes it’s 9 innings sometimes it’s 10 sometimes it’s 20. That’s what makes it kind of insane to someone checking it out for the first time.

Someday. I gotta find a way to get Warhammer Total War to work for me first. Plus...I got Three Kingdoms Total War free from GOG over Christmas. None of the DLC, but the core game, at least. Should be fun. So much to play...

Mostly, I've been working through DOOM, though. Finally beat DOOM II for real for the first time. Icon of Sin is so much harder without IDDQD.

My mother showed that movie to me as a kid. I lost all memory of what it was and who was in it, but I remembered two sequences for years.

The cup scene at the end, and Kaye speaking into a woman's hand because he's deaf (or the other way around). But I had no idea where it was from, and I'd ocassionally consider asking my mother what they were from, knowing she had shown me the movie it came from.

Then, I just randomly decided to watch the movie on Prime one day, and all my questions were answered.

It plays out differently based on which game you are playing - TW1 happens last in the timeline and therefore you have less time to deal with the Vamps before Chaos shows up.

One core suggestion though - don't annex the smaller Imperial factions if you can't defend their holdings as it is better to leave them as allies/vassals then. Also play nice with Bretonnia, the Dwarves AND the Wood Elves you need trade with the first two and at least peace with the latter.

That kind of accident happens with old oil tanks, more often than people realize. With those it’s usually some trapped hydrogen sulfide that no one realizes is there. (Heavier than air, so it gets stuck in containers that only have a top opening). Saddest thing is that those accidents are often two deaths instead of one - a guy sees his buddy go in, collapse, and he rushes in to save him and collapses as well.

Total War Warhammer's DLC is mostly extra factions. Always felt worthwhile, but also nickel and diming at the same time.

Not the biggest fan of DLC, but Total War is like the only one I care about.

I did get Shadows of the Tomb Raider for like $3 at the last sale, and it included the DLC, which was nice.

I remember when Pappaw cut off the tips of his fingers clearing a snowblower and he was PISSED. At himself. He said 'I spent 40 years as a Tool and Die maker. Went through Europe in a tank. Was wounded. Never lost a body part and I was stupid enough to stick my hand in a piece of equipment like that.'

Before a lot of websites required encrypted traffic back and forth under the https std, VPNs were necessary if you wanted to protect financial transactions, etc.

VPNs morphed into location hiders easy to use and gave corporate IT managers cover for requiring those to be used for security purposes. To be fair, SSH and other secure entries into corporate networks are not very friendly.

Still useful somewhat but for location hiding, you can always IP spoof and use something like Tor's onion browser. But that stands out like a sore thumb to ISPs on DNS searches from self owned equipment and governments unless you plan on using crowded internet cafes and public wifi on short sessions.

You also need to prevent hardware fingerprinting and various other lockdown procedures before doing it or you can still be identified.

Take a look at a lot of old music videos before MTV was created. Quite a few ridiculous and obvious examples where the musicians are not playing and making that fact known.

From what I recall, only a few British shows even permitted live performances in the studio, something to do with union requirements etc.

But, until the tech was good enough, no one tried to do lip syncing and feigning playing instruments in concerts like they do nowadays.

My wife's sense of humor =/= mine, but I was surprised that she liked and enjoyed that show (I missed it when it first came out but streamed it later).

Lots of vacancies in knowledge depending on subject. But, I grew up literally with computers and was playing Adventure on mainframes when I was a kid at the local university. Did some coding in the early 80's including formal classes and into the 90's with databases and statistics.

FWIW, law and computers are not that far off from each other as far as software and behavior. You craft legal arguments the same as you would coding to resolve a problem for outside clients.
