180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne While the history of art remained an important touchstone and source of inspiration for John Brack throughout his career, The bar is one of few examples of his work in which there is a direct connection to an artistic precedent. Here he restates the subject of Édouard Manet’s famous painting A bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1882, in a very contemporary guise, replacing the opulence of 1880s Paris with the dour austerity of 1950s Melbourne. Under the watchful eyes of the stern barmaid, a band of near-identical workers urgently drink their fill before the six o’clock closing that was enforced in Melbourne pubs until 1966. The owner is tall, scary, says everything with a bit of sarcasm, just daring patrons and staff to cross her, lol. Naturally, she had identified that supplier's bad hooch and demanded a full refund long before the police knew there was a crime, because nothing got past her.

All male patrons makes us think today, if reluctantly, of a gay bar.
The Cafe Lafitte in Exile, a block from the more famous Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, was right by my grammar school. One rainy Saturday my mother and I took shelter for a moment inside the in Exile . . . and sitting at the bar, talking with another man, was my school principal. He was married with a son in my class. I was embarrassed, as you are at age nine, to see your teachers or principals outside of school, but otherwise thought nothing of it. Years later Mom told me, "It was a gay bar even back then. . . . " Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 27, 2026 09:47 AM (wzUl9) Posted by: man at January 27, 2026 09:47 AM (XuXeR) 95

Posted by: nurse ratched at January 27, 2026 09:42 AM (IhIKR) Not so, miss. *sings* Some people say that life is a game, well if this is so I'd like to know the rules on which this game of life is based. I know of no game more fitting than the age old game of cricket It has honour, it has character and it's British. Now God laid down the rules of life when he wrote those Ten Commandments And to cricket those ten same rules shall apply. Show compassion and self-righteousness and be honest above all And come to God's call with bat and ball. Now the Devil has a player and he's called the Demon Bowler, He's shrewd, he's rude and he's wicked. He is sent by Sinful Satan and he's out to take your wicket And you know that that's not cricket. He'll baffle you with googlies with leg breaks and offspin But keep a level head and don't let that demon in. So keep a straight bat at all times, let the Bible be your guide And you'll get by, yes you'll get by. Posted by: Zombie Kinks at January 27, 2026 09:47 AM (iJfKG) 97

Nobody understands cricket anyway. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 27, 2026 09:42 AM (IhIKR) ____________ You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have got out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game. There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night -- Ten to make and the match to win -- A bumping pitch and a blinding light, An hour to play and the last man in. And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat, Or the selfish hope of a season's fame, But his Captain's hand on his shoulder smote -- 'Play up! play up! and play the game!' The sand of the desert is sodden red, -- Red with the wreck of a square that broke; -- The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead, And the regiment blind with dust and smoke. The river of death has brimmed his banks, And England's far, and Honour a name, But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks: 'Play up! play up! and play the game!' The temperance movement wasn't just in the US... the "progressive" wave of the early 20th century pretty much ruined western civilization.
——— That was an interesting observation, one thing I deduced from close reading of history (and photography) is every town of any size had a brewery and offered a local brew. Most had a Coffee importer and roaster, too. Prohibition, and wartime expedients and post war consolidations - (canned food, instant this, powdered that) pretty much ruined those products for a hundred years. Hipsters like to think they invented beer, or the Starbucks folks that Americans have always drank watered down crap robusta bean coffee. Not so. All it does is seem to show that government jiggery-pokery can cause distortions for a very very long time. Posted by: Common Tater at January 27, 2026 09:53 AM (M1m37) 130

Posted by: nurse ratched It’s actually a fairly simple game once you understand the basic rules. Difference is there are a lot more versions of the same thing in cricket. Thats where it gets messy. That’s what makes it kind of insane to someone checking it out for the first time. Posted by: Really?? at January 27, 2026 09:55 AM (4uLDQ) 142
SO I just read the dumbest article in Il Post which is apparently a popular Italian magazine.
In it the author blames Paradox Interactive and their video game Crusader Kings for spreading false narratives. Crusader Kings is a game where you play a medieval ruler and while there isn't a specific goal, most people emulate real world goals of expanding the realm you rule and the influence of your family in the world So what false notions does the game portray? Well that Europe was full of whitepypo and not a multiracial paradise, and that Christians and Muslims fought wars for control of Europe. "False" This Netflixing of history is getting absurd. The Bar
Cecil John Brack Ha, ha, ha! Wikipedia. In part, The Bar is a 1954 painting by Australian artist John Brack. The subject of the painting directly references Édouard Manet's 1882 work A Bar at the Folies-Bergère.[1] It depicts a barmaid working in an Australian pub at the time of the "six o'clock swill". As in Manet's work, the patrons of the bar are shown in a reflection behind the barmaid. The work is considered a companion piece to Brack's 1955 work Collins St., 5 pm.[2] A Melbourne art collector acquired The Bar for 90 guineas in 1954.[1] In 2006, the painting sold for $3.12m, a then record price for an Australian artwork at auction.[1] The anonymous buyer was later revealed to be David Walsh, owner of the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart. He sold the painting to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) for the same price in 2009.[2]" --- I also saw & read about the companion piece, Collins St., (1955) so this thread has proved another interesting lesson in art. However, I'd pass hanging both. Thanks. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at January 27, 2026 10:21 AM (NFX2v) Posted by: man at January 27, 2026 10:21 AM (XuXeR) 256

It plays out differently based on which game you are playing - TW1 happens last in the timeline and therefore you have less time to deal with the Vamps before Chaos shows up. One core suggestion though - don't annex the smaller Imperial factions if you can't defend their holdings as it is better to leave them as allies/vassals then. With those it’s usually some trapped hydrogen sulfide that no one realizes is there. (Heavier than air, so it gets stuck in containers that only have a top opening). Saddest thing is that those accidents are often two deaths instead of one - a guy sees his buddy go in, collapse, and he rushes in to save him and collapses as well. Nobody thought in 1985 that the true sciences, chemistry, math, etc would get infected with the “politically correct” nonsense. It just didn’t seem remotely possible. Same with unqualified and incompetents in positions that required demonstrated skill, aptitude, and extensive training.
Throwing out all the standards, that didn’t seem possible either. A few extra planes falling out of the sky, 18 wheelers plowing into traffic, a few bungled diagnosis or surgeries, well that’s a small price to pay. “It’s only fair” you see. “Your death before their dishonor”; is how leftists maintain their worldview in light of abject failures. My hypothesis is that most industrial accidents aren't the result of heartless corporations sacrificing employees but of dumbasses circumventing policies already in place. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh ====== Counterpoint: Apollo capsule fire. NASA knew that any flame in a pure oxygen atmosphere could be deadly yet they tolerated shoddy quality in the wiring and flammability of capsule components. They also made it difficult to egress based on the perceived problem of Liberty 7 where Gus Grissom's capsule ended up at the bottom of the ocean. The Union Carbide Bhopal plant disaster, derailments of trains carrying hazardous chemicals like Palestine OH, etc. A lot of underground mining deaths, etc. Often it is some corporate tradeoff between speed, cost, and employee lives which results in disaster. Passed out on deck at the bottom of the ladder. First person on-scene passed out as well. Next ones wore SCBA's to perform rescue. The vendor had packed dry ice in the styrofoam containers that Asians are famous for putting every kind of food in for shipment and delivery. So it displaced the oxygen in the reefer units. Nobody could figure it out until I asked if there were rumpled clumps of newspaper in the shipping boxes. That's what the vendors wrap the dry ice in. 329 Why would anybody trust a VPN? Obvious honeypots for detecting illegal activity.
Posted by: gp ======== Before a lot of websites required encrypted traffic back and forth under the https std, VPNs were necessary if you wanted to protect financial transactions, etc. VPNs morphed into location hiders easy to use and gave corporate IT managers cover for requiring those to be used for security purposes. To be fair, SSH and other secure entries into corporate networks are not very friendly. Still useful somewhat but for location hiding, you can always IP spoof and use something like Tor's onion browser. But that stands out like a sore thumb to ISPs on DNS searches from self owned equipment and governments unless you plan on using crowded internet cafes and public wifi on short sessions. You also need to prevent hardware fingerprinting and various other lockdown procedures before doing it or you can still be identified. Posted by: whig at January 27, 2026 10:56 AM (E4rtv) 434

I always liked that show but never watched it on the air when it came out. Now I will have to try to find the YT clip of that.
Posted by: whig at January 27, 2026 11:05 AM (E4rtv) ------------ IIRC it was Simpy Irresistible. My wife's sense of humor =/= mine, but I was surprised that she liked and enjoyed that show (I missed it when it first came out but streamed it later). 447 whig, is there any subject matter with which you are not aware? I’m always amazed.
I’m beginning to suspect that you are AI . . . Posted by: RI Red Lots of vacancies in knowledge depending on subject. But, I grew up literally with computers and was playing Adventure on mainframes when I was a kid at the local university. Did some coding in the early 80's including formal classes and into the 90's with databases and statistics. FWIW, law and computers are not that far off from each other as far as software and behavior. You craft legal arguments the same as you would coding to resolve a problem for outside clients. Posted by: ShainS ======= Not eidetic in my case but I tend to retain a lot of information when reading and I read and process information very quickly in a lot of cases. Posted by: whig at January 27, 2026 11:12 AM (E4rtv) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0645 seconds. |
