Trump's methods are clumsy and embarrassing, but there is a serious concern behind them. Posted by: John Lawrence Here's my take from watching Trump. He has masterfully prepped the battlefield. He puts out the most outrageous demands and gets the response he wanted. Now, he'll come back and offer a 100 year lease. The Euros can save a little face while we now can invest knowing regardless of what government may come, we have what we want from Greenland. We can invest in infrastructure for mining, etc. and finalize the missing piece of the Golden Dome. The Danes can probably wet their beak on the mining. Also, the current residents can remain subjects of the Danish crown which has done so much for them. I assume they're all on the dole, so we won't have that expense. They said they wanted to remain subjects, so go and may God have mercy on your mercenary souls. Posted by: Blutarski, Gradually then Suddenly at January 20, 2026 07:16 PM (cxFcK) 13

That was historically one thing that made America great. Money always goes where it’s treated best. A sound currency.
Property rights, Rule of Law. Presumption of Innocence. Equal rights under the Law. Right to face one’s accuser. Business and capital investment depends on certainty. Reasonable certainty anyhow. Planning ten years out, one could reasonably predict interest rates would be in historical ranges. There wouldn’t have been a military coups and currency revaluation and sovereign debt default and all that bullshit. As a consequence of all these things, and more, America drew top talent and money from around the globe. It ain’t rocket science. But government has become infested with cretins and idiots, and indeed rapacious financial entities “too big to fail” have achieved regulatory capture. The currency has turned to confetti. Funny thing is, they tried to get their Good Communist Friend China to help them set up a solar system to replace their antiquated Soviet oil burning generators.
And Good Friend China said “you no payee the bills, you no get no solar panels.” You can always count on the Chinese - they never let ideology stand in the way of their own greed. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 20, 2026 08:34 PM (8YGuO) China would have been happy to float a loan for Cuba in order to gain more control over the island but they probably realized that even a Democrat President wouldn't be able to ignore that. Ignoring ideology in an endeavor almost certain to fail is easier than just ignoring it. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at January 20, 2026 08:37 PM (ExV1e) 177

Posted by: Kindltot at January 20, 2026 08:29 PM (rbvCR) I don't understand this, but it does remind me of something I read about Iceland recently. I guess most, if not all the power in Iceland is "renewable". That sounded ridiculous to me - the idea of solar power that far north, but that wasn't what they were talking about. It was about hydroelectric, and ... geothermal. Being of volcanic origin, maybe it's a pretty ideal place for doing geothermal. Sounds great to me.
