re: steam bend wood
we were cleaning out the church somewhat and we ran across a cool old baby chair in the nursery that probably hasn't seen a baby in twenty years. It had a label from a company up in Wisconsin that folded in about 1950 or so. It was a company that exclusively made chairs using some kind of wood local to the factory. It became one of the largest chair manufacturing companies in the US and their method included steaming the wood to bend it. A carpenter in town had the right machine to steam a piece of the existing wood to get it to wrap correctly around the tray. Posted by: DanMan at January 25, 2026 02:11 PM (8uzBS) 29
We got more precipitation last night - went outside this morning and started walking around. It might have been snow at some point, but what's on the ground now is solidly packed - not a shoe impression can be seen anywhere.
It got just high enough that we can't open the front gate - Oh, well - we have food and heat in the house, so it's all good. Although I forgot to order eggs or Dr Pepper when I sent out for Instacart the other day.... Here's some first world problems for ya....
We have around 6 inches of snow and it's still coming down. It's ten degrees outside. The boy spawn cleared my walkway and porch. The snow is dry, powdery so it isn't packing down but its windy so we're getting drifts. A county truck went through around 8 this morning but nothing since. I don't know whether to drag my garbage bin out to the road or not because who knows if the company trucks will get here or not. Hubbymayhem is stuck in a weather shutdown situation in some Hooterville in Kentucky. Hopefully he will be back on the road tomorrow since he's supposed to be off for six days starting Tuesday. I'm having a tooth pulled on Tuesday so a fun six days with Hubbymayhem is going to be..... limited. Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at January 25, 2026 02:15 PM (2J/Lj) 38

Madamemayhem, does your garbage company have a website you can check? Ours sometimes puts up a notice if the weather is going to prevent them coming.

I've been sweeping, like with a broom, the covered front porch about every hour. The snow/sleet whatever it is that's falling is very, very fine. Like sugar. But if I let it sit, it become a lovely, frozen sheet of ice.
The porch is wooden, so I don't really want to salt it. A nifty flamethrower thing would be cool, but I'd probably burn the house down. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 25, 2026 02:20 PM (qwVdq) 52

My FWP: I'm out of the impact area of the Super Mega Death Storm, but it's still chilly here at Villa Gorilla. I'm doing laundry today, but I'm not going to start the clothes dryer until it gets above 32F outside. No sense pulling sub-freezing air into the house if I don't have to.
I recall one winter when I was sitting at a control panel, trying to troubleshoot an HVAC system on a large-ish office building. Suddenly, the temperature in the ducts started plummeting. I realized I had used an override command to force the outside air dampers all the way open, and was now pumping 20F air into the building. The solution seems obvious, provided you aren't against making a few changes to the rug. Have a latex backing applied. You'll need a textile expert to be able to prepare the rug. The latex backing will keep the rug stetched out properly, make it more sturdy, and also make is less prone to slip.

Solution to the bendy rug problem :
(1) Place rug in washing machine. (2) Fill washing machine with hot water. (3) Add laundry detergent and bleach. (4) Run full cycle on washing machine. (5) Move rug to clothes dryer. (6) Run dryer on "Hot" setting for at least two hours. (7) Remove rug from dryer and throw it away. Fin. Posted by: a.moron at January 25, 2026 03:01 PM (X5Jzz) 121

Extension pole made from two sizes of aluminum conduit with appropriate clamps at each end.
Gently take the slack out of the rug. When at the point that there is no wrinkle but no tension spritz a fine mist where the wrinkles were. Later you may want to add a modest amount of tension. Mist at your discretion. If the rug continues to bow away from the pole use waxed, linen carpet thread making several loops through the carpet (spaced and individual - think shower curtain ring type spacing) with a slip knot over the pole. That way you can slowly apply tension where necessary till the carpet is even with the pole. No shoveling here until tomorrow. There's maybe five inches on the ground, but as the precipitation is forecast to become more sleet-like, I'd rather deal with a crust of ice on the snow rather than ice on the bare pavement. 117 My neighbors are out shoveling, and yet it's still coming down as freezing rain. I don't think they understand how this works. It's better to have the ice sheet atop the snow than on the pavement.
Posted by: Archimedes at January 25, 2026 03:00 PM (Riz8t) _____________________________ That's what we call a trade-off. You can shovel the snow while it's still relatively light and not saturated with rain (risk factor, icy). Or you can wait and give yourself a hernia, corronary, and soreness for a full week, but not risk a slip. I've reached the age where I always go with the former. And, I throw cat litter (unused) on any resulting ice. Posted by: Orson at January 25, 2026 03:44 PM (dIske) 192

All Iranian. And they do get crooked like that for some unknown reason. I don't actually bend the hardwood floors to align with them. We just use a sharpie to put fake joint lines down on the wood.
