THE MORNING RANT - Volkswagen’s Electric Vehicle Misfire: Its Made-In-America, Flagship EV is the Slowest Selling Vehicle in the United States

Wrecked VW ID.4.png

While I get some schadenfreude from documenting the financial damage that legacy American automobile manufacturers such as Ford and GM have inflicted on themselves with their EV misadventures, the mess at Volkswagen is deeply upsetting to me. Be it right or wrong, I know that the US government will bail out Ford and GM, if necessary, to help mitigate the damage done by their irresponsible executives. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is likely to pull out of the US market and close its US manufacturing operations if it can’t right its ship.

I have long been a fan of Volkswagen products. In the post-Beetle era, its lineup has provided modern German engineering and a German driving experience to the mass market. My wife and I had a Passat which was an exceptional vehicle. I might have bought an American-made VW Atlas for my most recent vehicle purchase if I wasn’t so disgusted by Volkswagen pursuing an all-EV future. I didn’t want to buy a car that VW’s executives were determined to kill off.

If Volkswagen is going to survive in the U.S., it had better re-commit to gasoline-powered (“ICE” vehicles, because its flagship electric offering, the ID.4, is the slowest selling car in the United States.

VW ID.4 Slowest Moving Car - 2.png

It would take 527 days to sell out the inventory of ID.4s in the United States, making it the slowest-selling vehicle in the country in January, according to metrics from CarEdge.

Have you ever heard of the Maserati Grecale? Me neither. It may be obscure and hard to sell, but it turns over faster than Volkswagen’s electric car.

The No. 2 slowest-selling vehicle in the United States in January was the Maserati Grecale.

Normal vehicle inventory takes 60 – 90 days to turn, and dealerships have historically targeted a 60-day supply of vehicles to ensure the optimum mix of vehicles without carrying excess inventory. For a vehicle which moves so slow that dealers are burdened with more than a year’s supply, they’d generally prefer to have zero units in stock. On the off chance a customer came in wanting to buy such a slow-moving vehicle, the dealer could easily get another dealer to transfer one.

Over the past several decades there has been an economic explosion in the American South, thanks in part to so many auto manufacturers locating plants in the region. In addition to those manufacturing operations, numerous suppliers also established nearby operations, and suppliers to those suppliers sprung up too. The cycle of prosperity and economic activity flows well when manufacturing is strong. Pretty much all the major Japanese, Korean, and German car companies have operations in the southern U.S. It’s a golden goose laying golden eggs.

But the EV fever somehow captured the minds of many auto executives and southern politicians, and they pursued EV investments in the South, even though the explicit goal was to kill-off the golden goose of existing ICE auto manufacturing.

In 2019, Tennessee’s then-governor, Republican Bill Haslam waxed enthusiastic about killing off ICE vehicles in favor of electric vehicles when he hyped VW’s announcement of a new Tennessee EV plant, “The shift toward electric vehicles is a trend that can be seen worldwide, and Volkswagen’s decision to locate its first North American EV manufacturing facility in Chattanooga underscores Tennessee’s manufacturing strength and highly-skilled workforce.” The state of Tennessee kicked in about $50 million of taxpayer dollars toward this ill-fated EV plant that was built alongside VW’s existing Tennessee plant.

Initial expectations were for the EV plant to assemble about 7,000 units per month, with the ability to ramp up to a volume exceeding 100,000 per year.

The actual demand has been negligible, averaging less than 20,000 units per year, even with federal rebates and aggressive pricing. But in Q4 of 2025, after the federal EV incentives expired, Volkswagen sold a nominal 248 electric ID.4s. That averages out to just 83 units per month, and annualizes to less than 1,000 units.

Volkswagen built a taxpayer-subsidized EV plant that was expected to produce about 10,000 electric vehicles per month, but it cannot even sell 100. The company may have no choice but to scrap the glut of unsold ID.4s, since consumers have made it clear that there is virtually no price at which they’re willing to buy them.

The failure of Volkswagen’s EV foray is an overall good thing for the American auto industry. The golden goose of ICE manufacturing lives on. But it is infuriating that politicians wasted taxpayer money on this malinvestment, and it will be especially sad if VW has to pull out of the American market and close its legacy Tennessee manufacturing plant due to the awful EV Gamble.

There is zero chance VW pulls out of USA. VW sells 100s of thousands of vehicles a year here under its own brand, plus 100s of thousands more under its owned brands (Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini). VW is one of the largest auto companies in the world.

The EV pill is gonna be hard for all companies to swallow. But swallow it they will.

Yep, that is correct. Jaguar has completely phased out all ICE vehicles save for the F-Pace and moving to an EV-only lineup. The ICE F-Pace will be phased out this year. Bye-bye, Jaguar.

Grok:

In short: Right now in early 2026, the F-Pace appears to be effectively the only new vehicle available from Jaguar in many regions (or the sole one still in active production/sale), as the brand has cleared out most of its old lineup ahead of the electric relaunch. But it's not "the only one" forever — Jaguar's future is all-EV starting this year.

75 The Las Cruces VW dealership has 1 (one) VW EV Buzz bus on the lot. It has been there, well, I lost count of how many months it has been there. I think it is the second one they got stuck with. I have seen the first one around town from time to time - it took something a year to find a sucker for the one. I suspect the problem the LC VW dealership has moving these is the lack the a large homosexual community. From casual observation the ID.4 sales are about double the EV Buzz bus sales.

First gen had a six cylinder natural breather engine, this new one has a turbochaged 4 and the tranny's been tuned for great performance in city, on highway, and on steep and curvy mountain roads where the SUV lives all summer and fall.

We wanted inside cubic footage and three rows seating with capacity for 7 adults. When we got our first one, the Honda Pilot was the only other choice in the same class.

Now I belive the Toyota Grand Highlander is same size, but we like the Atlas. It gets close to 26 mpg on a highway trip if the speed is set to 73.

On further thinking, hat VW should do is offer the reborn microbus with a Subaru flat six, built under license. All the power you need, and a history of durability. Build a RWD model with no reduction boxes, and an AWD model with reduction boxes and suitable gearing in the front differential to make the wheel RPM's match.

And no damned touch screen! If the buyer wants the optional ($2500) touch screen they also get a big red clown nose welded on the front.

208 JustTheNews: In Somali fraud scandal, Republicans probe evidence of a blue state election scheme

The Republicans' argument goes like this: Democrats reversed Donald Trump’s related first-term executive orders and ensured that noncitizens, including illegal immigrants, were counted into 2020 U.S. Census. Then-President Biden opened the southern border so that millions of illegals could flood the country in just a few years.

Next, liberal nonprofits helped move those migrants from the southern border red states, where they were not particularly welcome, to "sanctuary cities" in Democratic-run cities in the election battleground states and helped them enroll in welfare at the taxpayers' expense.

And finally, Democratic leaders, like failed vice-presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tom Walz, they say, failed to act — or even worse, looked the other way — when evidence emerged that non-citizens were defrauding those safety net programs by the tune of billions of dollars. And liberal judges blocked efforts to stop or punish the fraud.

Dodge (Charger Daytona EV): This vehicle uses a "Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust" system. Unlike simple speaker-based systems, it uses a physical exhaust chamber to create a 126-decibel roar that matches the intensity of a Hellcat V8

220 NYPost: Josh Shapiro says Harris team asked him if he was ‘double agent for Israel’ during VP vetting process

Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has claimed in his forthcoming memoir that 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’ campaign asked him if he had ever worked as a “double agent for Israel” while vetting him as a potential running mate.

Shapiro, who is Jewish, wrote in “Where We Keep the Light” that he told his interrogator, former Biden White House counsel Dana Remus, that he found the question offensive and was told, “Well, we have to ask.”

223 I was slightly interested in a new car a few months ago. During that time, I decided to give a Volkswagon Atlas a spin. This was an Atlas Cross-Sport model. Initially, I liked it on the short test drive in town. Roomy, quick, and sort of cool. Yeah... it looked good too. (except it's fake dual exhaust. LOL)
Then shortly after, I needed to rent a car for an across state (Texas) trip and back. Lots of driving involved. The rental was an Atlas SEL model. Pretty much the same car with a less sporty look was all. Anyway...
I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. Not all that comfortable and loud engine noise. Therefore, I have removed the Atlas from my list of possibilities. (These were both ICE cars)

I watched a YT of a rather scruffy looking black man talking about his all time favorite books. One was Anna Karenina. Got me to thinking about the famous first line, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." I thought black culture including black families were different (and better) than white culture. Or maybe we're basically the same despite some cultural differences and the things that make a functional black family are the same as those that make a functional white families. (Even Russians!)

Eh. Thats about 20 years out of date. They Krauts gave in and added actual usable cup holders for Yankee drivers.

But yeah I had an E39 BMW 540 and the “cup holders” were hilarious. They were so flimsy they were unusable. It was a passive aggressive move by BMW. Ok you dumb fucks you want cup holders here you go. But good luck ever using them.

323 Apropos the earlier thread about “why Greenland?” From Mark Steyn’s latest post:

The obsession with Greenland, so bewildering to US “allies”, derives from America’s need for an Israeli-style “Iron Dome”, which, as the mighty builder of Trump Tower, the President has upgraded to a “Golden Dome”. Why would he seek such a thing? Because in this scenario America’s Israel… and Western Europe is Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Iran.

He means that literally, as in Western Europe will be a seething hellhole of Muslim terrorism and religious aggression directed toward the United States.

334 VW spit on their winning formula, abandoning it for a DEI masturbatory-fantasy. A "green jerk off," basically.

They used to be cute, fun to drive, and below average in cost. Average reliability. Not Toyota, but better than Chevy. That was the formula, and it worked. "Quirky."

Now? This schlock is supposed to lure us away from... what, exactly?

Battery cars suck. Electric cars? Great. But batteries? A thousand times, NO.

Just like their whole country, "we have made a major strategic mistake" in the pursuit of a "green fantasy."

Ugh. It was a very solid car built on the Passat chassis. Best part was it was easy to park in tight spots. One of the sons comes home and he and a buddy take the little rig to the Astros game downtown. They were howling when they got back. "Everybody thought we were gay!!"...the raindow airsock on the mirror may have driven that

411 I was just listening to Palmer Luckey on Mike Rowe's podcast. He noted that auto safety laws are so explicitly written that we miss out on all kinds of proven-safer things…

This has been a minor obsession of mine ever since the passenger-side pretensioner went out in my 2005 vehicle a few years ago. American cars today are basically airbags that happen to have a car built around them.

Why do we need a pretensioner? Because without it your airbag might kill you. Airbags were initially sold as replacing seat belts. Now they refuse to work if the seat belt isn’t engaged. They refuse to work if the seat belt can no longer be tightened in a crash.

Why are children required to be in the back seat in some states? Because the air bag might kill them.

Even passengers are told that if they’re going to read a book, or write, or browse their tablet, do it in the back seat. Otherwise, your air bag will kill you.

The whole airbag system has become a massive rube goldberg machine locking out any better safety features.

Don Lemon: The Human Equivalent of a Car Alarm at 3 a.m.Don Lemon is what happens when a network decides mediocrity needs a face, a bowtie, and an insatiable hunger for relevance. He spent nearly two decades at CNN perfecting the art of looking gravely concerned while saying absolutely nothing of substance. His signature move was the furrowed brow + dramatic pause combo—telegraphing “this is serious” so hard you’d think he was about to announce the heat death of the universe instead of “Trump just tweeted again.”The man turned sanctimony into a brand. He didn’t report the news; he performed moral superiority over it. Every segment felt like a community theater production of “I Am The Conscience Of America” directed by someone who’s never read a book without pictures. He scolded, he sighed, he shook his head in that practiced disappointed-dad way that made you want to throw a shoe at the television. His most legendary moment?

458 His most legendary moment? The 2021 “n-word” lecture where he solemnly explained to black viewers that they shouldn’t say the n-word either, because… reasons. The hubris required to stand on national television, as a gay black man who grew up in Baton Rouge, and lecture the entire culture about how they’re allowed to talk is almost admirable in its astronomical narcissism. Almost. Mostly it was just embarrassing. Then there’s the journalism. Or what he called journalism. Lemon specialized in the “ask a loaded question, act shocked at the answer, then lecture the person for giving the answer you baited” pipeline. He once asked a rape survivor if she regretted drinking that night. He grilled women about their sex lives on air. He suggested—on air—that a 9-year-old boy who survived a mass shooting might have been “coached” because he spoke too well. The man had the empathy of a malfunctioning Roomba and the self-awareness of a parking cone. And the pivot to “independent media”? Chef’s kiss of delusion. He launched a YouTube channel and a $400 subscription “NoBS News” product like he was the people’s last hope against corporate media. Brother, you were corporate media.

You didn’t get canceled; you got gently pushed out the emergency exit after the ratings started circling the drain and even CNN realized the sanctimonious scold routine was losing viewers faster than a Trump rally loses decorum. Now he drifts through podcasts and X Spaces, still doing the same furrowed-brow routine, still pretending he’s the truth-teller everyone’s been waiting for, still shocked—shocked!—that the world has moved on without him. The bowtie is gone, but the ego remains superglued to his face.Don Lemon isn’t evil. He’s just terminally, aggressively, relentlessly average—dressed up as moral authority and furious that the costume doesn’t fit anymore. He’s the human embodiment of a blue-check legacy media meltdown: loud, self-important, increasingly irrelevant, and somehow still convinced he’s the main character.Five hundred words wasn’t enough. But it’ll do until the next time he opens his mouth and reminds us why we stopped listening.

Denver QB Bo Nix was to kneel down after the snap to line the ball in the middle of the field for a straight shot for the kicker to win the game in overtime.

He did and Denver won the game. However, in the process of kneeling, Nix broke a bone in his foot/ankle and is out for the remainder of the season.
