So went to the range with Lazy Messenger. I took my Ruger 10/22, which I just put a Pick rail on. I'm buying a cheap $50 dot for it as my eyes sure do want a dot over a buckhorn sight.
I kinda want a bolt action suppressed .22 but...one thing at a time. Also did some church gun drills. Double taps were TERRIBLE again. But single shots from the holster were sufficiently accurate and slowfire was great with the G43x design. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, buy ammo, food, water at January 18, 2026 07:04 PM (xcxpd) 10

I read a description of a Bedouin day at the range, circa 1880. They were still shooting matchlocks:
" they went out daily, shooting with ball at a white paper set up in an orchard wall at a hundred and twenty paces. I sat down with Fahd to see the practice ; their shots from the long Arabic matchlocks struck at few fingers’ distance all round the sheet, but rarely fell within it." " The best was Ghranim, when he was one amongst them, for looking through spectacles, he would send his ball justly at the first shot into the midst of the white ; — this firing with the match does not unsettle the aim. " In another part of the book the author describes how the Bedouins make their own poor quality gun powder. Part of the process involves collecting soil from areas where their livestock (camels, sheep, and goats) gathered frequently. The charcoal they made themselves, the sulphur they could get by trading off maybe a goat, or perhaps an extra wife. Posted by: fd at January 18, 2026 07:12 PM (vFG9F) 23

No range report, but I did take possession of my newest acquisition on Friday.
Now the proud owner of a Tikka T3x TACT A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor. (Yaaaay) Now the bad news, I did not get the correct ring height to mount my scope onto the rifle. Because of that the objective bell rests on the rifle leaving about a quarter inch or more gap between the tube and the bottom of the ring. I had purchased standard height rings that had a height of .835 inches. I am mounting a Nightforce NXS 8-32x56mm scope. Because the objective bell was so large the ring height I should have ordered should have been 1.375 inches or higher. So the mating of the scope to the rifle will be put off until I order the correct rings. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at January 18, 2026 07:15 PM (LgsNJ) 27
Taught youngest daughter to clean her Rough Rider revolver this week.
One chamber was starting to get a bit sticky, and all had some carbon(?) build up. The patch was a little dirty after the first pass through the barrel. The second patch was clean. I was actually amazed how clean the gun was. I believe we have put 300 rounds of cheap 22lr through the gun, including a few boxes of bare lead bullets. Does an inexpensive gun catch LESS crud due to looser tolerances and shallower rifling? I have cleaned shotguns after 10 rounds during a poor hunting season that were much dirtier. sra blaster's father passed away Friday. He was in a nursing home in Colombia. They weren't especially close but she was hit pretty hard regardless, but she's much better now.
Her dad was a character, I guess. Some gub stuff: as a younger man in Colombia he was running a thrift store. Some guys came in to rob the place. He resisted. So they shot him in the torso - with a shotgun. He survived, obviously. Birdshot. But that's a story! When he came to the US he had a job as a cab driver in NYC in the 70s. He got robbed at gunpoint (in the 70s in NYC what are the odds?) He testified against the man who held him up. Turns out the Mafia was running a taxi stick up ring. (I found this surprising.) So because he testified he and the family got relocated to Detroit, which is where sra blaster grew up. I have no deets on the firearms involved in these stories. Does an inexpensive gun catch LESS crud due to looser tolerances and shallower rifling?
I have cleaned shotguns after 10 rounds during a poor hunting season that were much dirtier. Posted by: Pillage Idiot ====== 22 LR is a bit cleaner that it used to be and the fact that this gun is new means bore finish is probably better than days of yore. Older primers used to use crushed glass as part of the formula and it scoured barrels over time. Steel was often not as good either especially in low cost rimfire firearms. I think since at least the 90's, crushed glass has been dropped for domestic ammo primers from the bigs-Remington, Winchester, and Federal. A good smooth barrel from the middle of a run (before and after the tooling may either produce burrs or chatter), often will not lead much if kept up. Use plated, it won't lead much period but even good ole Thunderbolt if the barrel is absent machining marks much, won't lead much if at all. Sometimes you luck out on such firearms and sometimes you don't. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 07:42 PM (E4rtv) 65

I received the box of Berry’s plated semi wadcutters in .45 ACP, 200 grain. Last week I reviewed my notes and remembered that I had loaded for a 200 g Hornady FTX hollow point and that I had found a good load of TiteGroup. I had a few bullets left, so I loaded accordingly and chronoed them. 885 FPS and I’m aiming for 875 on the new round. I know I asked this a couple weeks ago, but at age 29 I tend to let slip important information like with the 6.5 Creedmoor, what is a good factory round to get out to a 1,000 and beyond?
Will put an order through the gun store I got the rifle from as that is the only way I can purchase ammo without having to travel long distances to freer States. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at January 18, 2026 07:47 PM (LgsNJ) 71
FWIW, pistol length barrels in 22 LR are much less likely to lead simply because the barrels are short and any deficiencies in mfg, chatter, burrs, etc. can be seen usually. Plus, you are shooting at the bottom of the pressure curve with a revolver due to the cylinder gap, throats are often more generous on cheap firearms (throat is at the end of the cylinder fwiw), and a smooth proper trajectory for a forcing cone can mean less leading.
Rifle length get up to higher velocity and you get a different pressure curve plus at least 10-12 inches longer for any mfg problems in the bore, rod damage, etc. to show up. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 07:47 PM (E4rtv) 72

Key Takeaway: While the classic mob movie trope of a "mafia taxi robbery" isn't a documented major event, the intersection of organized crime (like the Lufthansa Heist) and the persistent issue of taxi driver victimization by street criminals shows a history of vulnerability for drivers in NYC. Load plated like lead, not jacketed. Same with Hi Tek and powder coated bullets. Some report signs of bore wear with firing lots of powder coated but YMMV. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 07:51 PM (E4rtv) 77
Can you SEE the lead deposits in your match-grade .22 barrel? Do you only shoot copper jacketed?
Posted by: Pillage Idiot at January 18, 2026 07:37 PM (HlyYF) Nope, can’t see fouling, unless you put a bore scope in. But it’s there. The schmutz you can see is powder residue. I only shoot high end lead 22 ammo for competition and save the copper for my 10-22. And having said that, I only clean the competition barrels from lead if they start showing loss of accuracy. The chamber I keep clean. But on a revolver, I’d keep the whole thing clean on general principle. Posted by: RI Red at January 18, 2026 07:51 PM (LMRVO) 78

For everyone's amusement. A while back I saw a question on the interwebs about black powder cartridges in a Garand. Don't recall where I saw it or why the matter came up.
I hope the questioner was discouraged from trying it. Can you imagine what the fouling of black powder would do to the mechanics? Or cleaning things sufficiently? And I seriously doubt you could get enough black powder in the case to cycle the action. It's a very different pressure curve. Posted by: JTB at January 18, 2026 07:51 PM (yTvNw) 80

Here's a topic for discussion that I was thinking about last week but then we got going on something else and I sort of forgot.
What do you look for, positively or negatively, when going into a gun shop for the first time? There is a large retailer here where about half the staff are neck-bearded millennials walking around with tactical vests, empty plate carriers, and pistols holstered either in the middle of the chest or slung down at the knee. Which I might have been able to ignore if they were at least helpful. I went into another, much smaller, shop to get info about their concealed carry licensing class and they guy basically told me to look it up on their website. Sometimes you get lucky and find a shop that has friendly, knowledgeable staff and, as a bonus, and decent inventory but it seems like those are fewer and farther between these days. "Big box" stores like Bass Pro and Sheel's have OK inventory and professional staff but they're basically all the same. Posted by: Oddbob at January 18, 2026 07:54 PM (Fs0KI) 86
I’ve been invited to help a high-fence rancher slaughter his herd of white tail so he can make room for more exotic species.
These are good friends and I’d love to be invited for an actual hunt. But something about this seems off. Like it’s off-season, with no processing. They’re going to dig a big hole with a backhoe and bury all the carcasses. Should I be concerned? What questions should I ask without giving offense or presuming to tell someone their business? Ironically, just this morning I passed on the action rifle match - felt like sleeping in and also the number of shooters has led to the introduction of (short) par times, sort of defeating the whole "fun" element. Lots of movement, some physical work, which I much prefer to anything static. But one reloading issue/jam/whatever, and you end shooting 1/3 of a stage. Boring.
Still have to go unpack my s**t. I take both a Garand for the main range stages and an M1 carbine for the short range work. Posted by: rhomboid at January 18, 2026 07:54 PM (U/Byj) 88

Bride of PI (new shooter) took lessons from Steck at the MoMe.
She used that cheap gun to put five in a row on the 4" plate, reloaded, and then did five more in a row on steel by the end of the lesson. Modern American (Florida) manufacturing techniques for the win! Posted by: Pillage Idiot ===== You should be proud. Females often shoot far better at first and are generally more coachable than males. Better hand eye coordination. If she can master a double action revolver pull, then it will serve her well in trigger technique on most firearms including rifles. That is because the double action requires doing all of Weasel's fundamentals on trigger pull correct for accuracy with no gimmicks like catching the link, etc. You have to literally row the trigger back and forth. If a person can master a snubbie double action trigger pull, then shooting anything else feels almost like cheating. And fwiw, to teach double action trigger pulls, I would go with a used revolver, a Smith and Wesson Model 10 or variant of their K-Frame line. Used revolvers are broken in and smoother if there are no mechanical problems. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 07:57 PM (E4rtv) 97

To legally buy ammo in California, any ammo, you have to be registered with the government as the owner of a gun in that caliber. Long guns included. The law was changed to that in 2014. Any firearms purchased now require a state background check that leaves a permanent state record of ownership. They haven't gone after possession of guns purchased before the law changed -- yet. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if older state background checks provided unofficial (illegal) records that are still retained. Nothing I can do about that. I'm not aware of law enforcement solving any crimes with this information. I can only think of one reason for doing this: to have the option of confiscation. I will not be buying ammo. In my short time as a firearm enthusiast I have only visited the shops that were dedicated solely to firearms. The first shop that I frequented was about an hour or more drive from me and located outside of NYC. The guy I mainly dealt with(maybe 5 or 10 years younger than me) I thought was knowledgeable until he said I needed to get a different spring if I wanted to shoot something other than 185 grain. The second shop is the one I just used to purchase my newest rifle. This place is located only 20 or so minutes from me and run by much younger people. I am getting a good vibe and will continue to go to them and give them my business Posted by: Scuba_Dude at January 18, 2026 08:03 PM (LgsNJ) 109

.22 revolvers: Keep an eye on the forcing cone (end of the barrel closest to the cylinder) for excessive leading. I was once testing a dozen different flavors of .22LR in a nice S&W when it suddenly began spraying shots all over the target. I stopped shooting to see what the problem was.
When I pushed a patch down the bore, a silver miniature Cheerio fell into my hand. Word of advice for anyone cold bluing, make sure that no silicone containing products were used on the firearm--wipes, solvents (often CLP type), etc.
It will produce blotchy results as the stain (cold bluing is a stain) won't take right. Have to strip the silicone products off before it will work. I know this by the usual way--trial and error on a small part--a side magazine cover for an 1896 Krag. It ended up producing a funky appearance similar to Nitre bluing. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy That can also sometimes happen due to a revolver's timing being off. FWIW, Ruger double action revolvers after 1976 are not designed to shoot lead as their forcing cone angle IIRC 5 percent is too abrupt and they end up leading far more than an S&W or Colt would. They used the more generous 11 -18 percent depending on the model and whether work had been done to them. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 08:20 PM (E4rtv) 130

Posted by: Ed L If you use such, don't expect cold bluing that firearm to do quite right. You can get some gorgeous resembling old nitre bluing with that ( I suspect restoration types do that nowadays). But often, depending on the steel, you get blotchy uptake. Droplets of water that ball up often show silicone had been used, often in a wiping cloth. If you already have the cold bluing on the firearm, silicone wiping cloths, solvents, etc. won't disturb it but you won't be able to retouch it again without issues. Turned out that the sear spring's sear leaf was too long, and was hitting the frame, so it only worked as a spring for the first part of the sear's travel. I'd love to say that I figured that out with a series of brilliant deductions, but what really happened was that I had the beavertail out and I just kept staring at the innards while repeatedly cocking the hammer and pulling the trigger, until I noticed something didn't look right. Those 3 mfgs covered probably 80-90 percent of revolvers being used.
Whig I guess that makes sense - I think the case involved was late 80s early 90s so probably even more to the point. Still seems awfully speculative to include in a police report. Some idiots still believe that you should carry a double action revolver on an open cylinder like the old single actions (before transfer blocks were added to those).

Oh, whip. I have a complete receiver for a 98 Kraig, in no bbl or stock. Any use
Posted by: javems ===== I deeply appreciate the offer. But already have several Krags and can no longer fire them (impending spinal surgery coming). If the receiver is a full action and includes the bolt, etc., I think several people here might be interested. Barrels are still available and sporter stocks are still around. The Krag is one of the slickest bolt actions ever made and the height of Springfield Armory craftsmanship (and I am including the Garand). The 1898 falls right on the line between being an antique and thus not a firearm or a firearm requiring an FFL for transfer. Offhand, I think serial number 162000 for the 1898 makes the difference. Below that serial number, it is an antique with no more interest for the ATF or most states than a paperweight. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 08:42 PM (E4rtv) 158

Posted by: Ed L Earlier. For double action revolvers, hammer blocks were de rigeur since the K Frame and the Colt Navy and Army came out. Smith changed from the long action to the current one after WWII because of an accident on board with a Victory model. It fell on the hammer and overcame the hammer block. So Smith went from a springloaded hammer block to a cam design. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 08:45 PM (E4rtv) 163

Posted by: Bond in Michigan That era is getting scarce for stocks without paying primo prices as in over 400-500 bucks or more depending on refinishing and cartouches. Try checking Dupont Trading in Arizona every so often as they sometimes get old stocks from parade rifle sources. Another source, someone who I have not dealt with personally, is oldguns dot net. Decently made pocketguns for concealed carry for the most part and Iver had its market in an era where a 32 S&W Long gutshot could result in death. Iver got a bad rep later on primarily because they did not change with the times but until near the end, they made some quality firearms albeit in tame cartridges suitable for top breaks. H&R can also be regarded similarly. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 09:14 PM (E4rtv) 185
Just watched the movie "Homestead."
It's about preppers and something bad happening. The city guy comes up and wants a list of all the guns this guy has. And he does not shoot him and throw him in the compost heap. They guy has MULTIPLE M2 .50 cal machine guns (admittedly, they appear to shoot 7.62 NATO rounds, based on the brass hitting the ground...). For him to acquire those, no matter how rich he is, he HAS to know the legal ins and outs of Class 3 gun ownership. But he just lets the guy threaten him (after a nuke has gone off, etc.) and doesn't even get in his knickers about the Constitution and all. I was very disappointed. (A LOT of cliches in that movie. But it can certainly help establish some muscle memory in safely drawing, stance and grip, and trigger pull. Which you then take to the range to put into practice. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ======= That would do it. Stain aka cold bluing also can take better if you heat the pieces before application. Color will deepen depending on the steel, until about 5-6 applications. Sort of like shellac application to wood with thin application layers followed by polishing in between. I've had the best results on just plain carbon steel, especially barrels, mixed results on chrome moly steel, and it can be a challenge for highly polished case hardened parts as without scuffing the finish, you can't get the stain to take as well. Oxpho blue uses some nickel/selenium mixture, forgot what Birchwood Casey uses but Birchwood also has a blackening 'blue' to that some folks like. That can work okay on old WWI era blackish parkerizing on scratches etc. Used to be a guy on the forums named Tin Can Star or something like that. He did projects using rust bluing that came out gorgeous and had photos that showed what he did step by step. Rust bluing is the most DIY friendly along with parkerizing. New paints from Durocoat resemble bluing. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2026 09:44 PM (E4rtv) 223

Whig, have you read the “One Second After” trilogy? After-effects on EMP. Follows your prediction. Posted by: RI Red ======= Unpleasant reading of nuclear war effects way back in the 80's turned me off that genre so I leave dystopias to other people to read if they like. Alas Babylon is one of the more optimistic takes and that is not pleasant at all. Posted by: whig ===== Was the designated radiological monitor for my unit in the 80s. Eyes were opened so to speak. Lead an IRAD back in '09 on emp and solar flare effect on the electrical grid. I have nightmares about the grid, but not exposing myself to radiation. Odd the things the brain latches onto to get obsessed with. I really enjoyed the first book and for some reason which I cannot recall now was disappointed in the second, and never picked up the third. Might need to give them another try.
Posted by: Weasel at January 18, 2026 09:39 PM (zMLZ6) Yeah, first book was best. Eye opener. 2d and 3d were ok, but more action adventure with a sufficiently bad government take to confirm my worst suspicions. Posted by: RI Red at January 18, 2026 09:59 PM (fRFTM) 233

It’s been what, four weeks? Posted by: nurse ratched at January 18, 2026 09:50 PM (IhIKR) Trying to remain patient. This is the second time on the same shoulder. Maddening. I sincerely hope they got this one right. The last one was.... disappointing. My sister wanted me to come down to Olympia and use the University surgeons. But then, who follows through, since the convalescence takes so long? I did demand a different doc, and he seems to be more up on the latest. I have an Israeli balloon in there now, which is not something I thought I would ever say. LOL. But I miss shooting. I have considered using the deck railing for balance.... not really. Not particularly safe. I had to settle for DH's amazing NYE fireworks. Posted by: tcn in AK at January 18, 2026 10:01 PM (6Bc88) 234
230 Are you experiencing stringing or sagging?
