Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: A Deal For Cuba?![]() "Cuba's rulers are incompetent Marxists who have destroyed their country, and they have had a major setback with the Maduro regime that they are responsible for propping up," a White House official said, adding that Cuba should "make a deal before it's too late." President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post earlier in the month: "Cuba lived, for many years, on large amounts of OIL and MONEY from Venezuela." "In return, Cuba provided 'Security Services' for the last two Venezuelan dictators, BUT NOT ANYMORE," he continued. "THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA — ZERO! I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE." Ah...another deal! What kind of deal can there be that frees the Cuban people? The communist rulers of Cuba will not go willingly, and they have a comprehensive security and surveillance apparatus that would make the Stasi blush with embarrassment. Will we demand that the Cuban communist party give up power and then force the government to have free elections? Or we will sponsor an invasion, like we did in 1961? That went well. Actually, it did for American communists. JFK and the Democrat Party supported the communists by withholding air support! We can strengthen the embargo, push back against Chinese influence, eventually begin to decrease oil imports from Mexico, support dissidents within Cuba (if they dare to speak publicly against the pervasive terror), and what else? Of course we could invade and make short shrift of the Cuban army, but it would be bloody, and we would suffer casualties. Or perhaps decapitation strikes that destroy the leadership? But Cuba is a special case. Their communism is protected by the geography of the Island. There are no land borders that can be used by smugglers, both of goods, and of arms and ideas. Their communication is controlled quite well by the state, and their army is comparatively well fed and well paid. And they have survived for 67 years just a few miles from the coast of their Great Satan! The conventional wisdom was that with the softening of America's tone, Cuba's communism would wither, and it would become a soft socialist state. That never happened, and with three generations of indoctrination, the odds are long that it will happen now. The people of Cuba need our help, but what that help will be is the big question! Cuba, like Venezuela, will become an American protectorate. It will have its own government that manages its affairs and we will leave it alone so long as it does what it is told on the foreign stage.

People just don’t realize just how vile the Cuban communists were. That picture of John Kerry gushing when meeting Cuban leaders, along with Senator Tom Harkin, another piece of work. To his credit, he has kept his cockholster shut since retiring. Or maybe he’s dead, I’m not taking the time to check.
Castro and the boys were insisting on a “first strike” on America with the Soviet deployed nuclear missiles in October, 1962. They realized it meant the utter destruction of Cuba by massive retaliation. It was the Soviets who had to expunge Cuban missile crews and prevent just such an occurrence. As it was, Soviet commanders on the ground had wide latitude and could easily have kicked off World War III Posted by: Common Tater at January 22, 2026 11:07 AM (0mY7E) 12

For some numbers - the best estimate I've seen is that Cuba requires about 100,000 BOPD to maintain their economy and electrical systems. Cuba itself has some small production capability, producing an estimated 40,000 BOPD. Throughout last year, Mexico provided approx 19,000 BOPD, and Venezuela provided approx 37,000 BOPD.
As you see, leaving Cuba hanging on with just barely enough to get by on a daily basis. There were probably unrecorded shipments of refined products that added to these numbers, but not too many. So Mexico is saying they will keep doing what they've been doing (they say they have a contract), but no more. Which means the Cuba is 37,000 BOPD short of what they need to keep operating, with no saviors in sight. It goes without saying that they don't have the financial resources to purchase the shortfall from anyone. In dollar terms, someone needs to donate about $66 million a month to Cuba just for them to keep their heads above water. Barely. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 22, 2026 11:11 AM (giMmT) 18

Ah, Cuba. Their freedom would be a cool gift for Trump to give Lady Liberty on her 250th birthday.
I've only known Cuba as communist my whole life. It was funny to watch "Guys and Dolls" die the first time and see him whisk her off on a whirlwind trip to Cuba for a date. I've visited the Bacardi distillery in San Juan. The family had to flee Cuba after the revolution and set up shop in Puerto Rico. It's a nice little boat ride across the bay from old San Juan to the distillery, and you get a free drink token. And there's certain rare rums that they only sell at the gift shop at that location. (I bought one as a gift for a friend and accidentally packed it in my carry on!! So they confiscated it. Some San Juan airport workers were drinking well that night!) If Cuba manages to get liberated this year, the Horde will have to drink a round of Cuba Libres in celebration! Since PDJT is so fond of using tariffs, we should also impose tariffs on countries that use Cuba as a tourist and prostitution destination which feeds foreign currency into their broke-ass economy. Recruit a Cuban guerilla element to sabotage government and military infrastructure. Posted by: ballistic at January 22, 2026 11:11 AM (3BwY8) 25

I've always been of the opinion that one of the major things propping up the Cuban government has been the US embargo. My idea is that it gives the Cuban government a convenient scapegoat for the miserable lives of their citizens. I think that if that embargo was to simply go away, or maybe even soften dramatically, the regime would be forced to do something to maintain it, or change would just sort of happen automatically.
Rightly or wrongly, that's my opinion and therefore I'm fond of it. Posted by: Cybersmythe at January 22, 2026 11:35 AM (S6tOh) 98
The SS Morro Castle and her sister ship SS Oriente were built to ferry people in luxury from NY to Havana for tropical vacations and gambling. The Morro Castle caught fire and burned, then beached at Asbury Park NJ in 1934. 137 lives lost and the burned hulk was a tourist attraction on the beach until it was refloated and scrapped.

This represents roughly 30-35% of Germany's former nuclear fleet capacity that could feasibly restart with investment and policy change. The same thing will probably start happening in Iran soon. That's why the mullahs are doomed no matter what they do. They can't provide a stable life for the citizens of Iran. Too many things are going to start going wrong. It will be chaos for a while until the citizens figure it out on their own.

I predict Cuba will be a bit more covert and challenge the odds of it all happening at once. Trump took away the oil revenue that Cuba used for income. Melania documentary will be in theaters Jan. 30? Here is the trailer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e9FJit5XiqU
I love the last clip of the trailer, she's obviously in Trump Tower in NYC. Trump to her: did you watch it? Her: I did not, I'll catch it in the news. In that scene is a Renoir, I looked it up to see if it's real. Because I could totally see Trump owning a Renoir! It's a reproduction of La Loge, and the original painting is London's Courtauld Gallery. AI says: Art writers noted the irony of the choice, suggesting parallels between the woman in the painting (representing social aspiration) and Melania Trump, especially given previous instances of Trump properties displaying fake Renoirs, like Two Sisters on the Terrace...some see owning fake Renoirs as a form of "Aspirational fakery." So...everyone that owns a poster of Starry Night in their home is performing aspirational fakery?? Posted by: I used to have a different nic ===== Which in turn causes innocent commenters to be frequently locked out because their VPN service and IP numbers were used by banned trolls. Nowadays, better ways exist than VPNs if you are in this country--namely anonymized DNS servers that encrypt your DNS requests going and coming so your ISP cannot track you very well. Doesn't work for trolls but well enough for average people. The exception to the rule is if you are the type to try to use free wifi everywhere then you need to be using a VPN for a cell phone access. Not necessary on a properly locked down network even to obscure your IP if you want. Never grant programs or apps access to exact location for starters. So then those channels made their OWN Amelia videos, to cash in on the interest and also get a boost in fees and likes. And the legend of Amelia spread far faster then it would have if not for monetized likes and views. It's a crazy reward system, and I don't know how to fix the problems without ruining what makes it special in the first place. Posted by: LizLem at January 22, 2026 12:20 PM (gWBY1) 291
J6 protesters were tracked down with facial recognition software. Will such technology resources be brought to bear to identify the the church rioters?

285 Cuba would also be a good location for the UN. Let the people decide. Get the UN off of American soil.
Posted by: Rev. Wishbone at January 22, 2026 12:16 PM (oT7pT) _______________________________ One caveat. Before we toss the UN out, they have to pay all their NYC parking tickets. We could finance a new Nuclear Power plant with the total they owe. Posted by: Orson at January 22, 2026 12:21 PM (dIske) 294

Comes down, if not an actual FUD troll, to a personal feeling of lack of agency to affect things.
Posted by: whig at January 22, 2026 12:20 PM (E4rtv) A lot of it might also be learned helplessness. You can only go through the cycle of "Hey, this might turn out nice" to "Wow, that didn't turn out nice at all" so many times before you stop believing that anything nice could ever happen. And then that pessimism eventually goes from passive to active. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 22, 2026 12:22 PM (JwNbV) 299
If it's tough to ignite, it must be lignite.
Lignite from Germany. Everything you wanted in a coal and less. Posted by: Dark Litigator They purposely dismantled their nuclear plants to not allow rebuilding, and now are going to burn lignite. They are also using biofuels. What is Geman biofuel? It is the Black Forest being cut down and burned. Posted by: Thomas Paine at January 22, 2026 12:22 PM (NS0kW) 300

Why do they care so much about trolling? Is there something wrong with them?
Posted by: Northernlurker Trolling is as old as Usenet. There used to be a famous Usenet post widely disseminated guide to trolls as to describing behavior, typology, etc. Sort of like Dungeons and Dragons Monster manual. Some are paid, some do it because of psychological issues, and some do it for the cause, whatever that might be. And some lack enough self awareness to realize that they have become a troll themselves by using many of the same tactics that trolls do. Posted by: whig at January 22, 2026 12:24 PM (E4rtv) 308
