8 Regarding the man filming his daughter - I took a terrific photography class during college. We did all kinds of very cool stuff: sound activated shutters, super long exposures, high speed objects, etc. Lots of fun.

Our professor warned us though - he said something like, you can either photograph an event or experience it - never both.

44 Rents are from Lord of the Rings, right? The giant tree people?

I never have been able to get into those books - then again, my knowledge of classic literature is pretty much non-existent. The year I would have gotten a good grounding in that the only times the class was offered at my high school were also the only times the 2 advanced science classes I wanted to take were offered.

So science it was. Engineering curriculum in college didn't require any literature courses, and after that I was busy studying and being a new bride.

I read, but just never got around to reading the classics.

86 …he only times the class was offered at my high school…

When I was in college, there was an English class that covered Tolkien and some other classic fantasy authors. I saw no reason whatsoever to have gone to college to do the work involved in a course like that, but I was interested in the topic. So I just showed up at the class and didn’t do any of the work.

I didn’t completely think it through, though. The professor liked to have pop quizzes; whenever he announced that today was a quiz day, I would walk out, assuming that the fact that it was a giant pop-culture class with literally hundreds of students in an auditorium would hide me. It did not. The last time I walked out, he addressed me directly telling me I wasn’t going to pass the course if I didn’t take the tests.

Which of course wasn’t a problem, but it did threaten the anonymity I craved then and still do. I would’ve been that guy in 1776: The Musical who voted for independence just so that no one knew my name.

Posted by: davidt at January 16, 2026 10:09 PM (Q+gd/)

It would be feasible to build a highway from northern Saskatchewan to link up with the Alcan Highway. But probably more practical to make the three main E/W highways (and railways) neutral territory insofar as the rights of way go. Treat them sort of like toll roads; an Alberta licence plate would let you enter/exit those highways at will, no stop required. Plate from any other province would be dinged for a fee for every entry and exit, save for highway rest stops and gas stations.

Cost of production depends upon what kind of oil, and what you have to do to produce it. There is vast room for expansion of the oil sands resource at MacMurray. Economies of scale can kick in. The logical thing to do would be use nuclear power to run the mines, and the recovery process, and the upgrader. And just a couple hundred miles east, in Saskatchewan, are massive uranium mines already production. Room for expansion there, too.

168 Cost of production depends upon what kind of oil, and what you have to do to produce it.

That's the kicker; Canada and Venzuela produce the same type of crude oil; heavy and sour. The refineries best equipped to process this are on the Gulf Coast.

And what makes Canadian crude more expensive isn't just the technical challenges of extraction, there's also a high regulatory burden. An oilfield takes on average eight years to open in Canada and involves a lot of payoffs along the way. An oilfield in Venezuela or Guyana is just three years.

Now Canada could find a market for heavy sour crude in China... if the Government hadn't blocked construction of pipelines from Alberta to the Pacific.

There is plenty of light, sweet crude in Alberta, too. The oil from the oil sands is put though an upgrader before it ever enters a pipeline. The upgrader hydrogenates the heavy oilsands crude, and makes a lighter, sweeter product that is what the buyers get. The upgrader is fueled by "stranded" natural gas that is produced from wells located on the far side of the oilands area, too far from markets to be sold directly.

198 Continued from post above, had a memory my husband and I still laugh about.

My very first date, 9th grade, was with a football player in our class (girlfriends made me go out with him. I liked his best friend better). Nice guy. Drove an orange muscle car, I think a Dodge something.

Anyway, I was nervous as was he on the way to the stupid drive-in torture. So I could see what people did there and not approve.

On the way down our long driveway my brother jumped out of a ditch, on all fours, barking like a dog.

We pretended not to see him but I laughed anyway.

We did not date long. I had to "walk him off the football field" a few times. I honestly did not see the point but I did it. He was sweaty and dating a buffoon who'd rather stay home and he eventually gave up as I was hopeless.

It's easier to build highways in "boring" country, you know. Don't have to go far off the Trans-Canada to see some neat stuff. Cypress Hills, on the AB-SK border is a small mountain ridge that remained unglaciated during the height of the last glacial period. Home to a unique and subtly different ecology. About 30 miles off the highway. And the Alberta badlands around Drumheller are about 30 miles north of the highway, further West. Many miles of quite spectacular scenery. And dinosaurs.

We're in more danger from the enemy now than if we broke up and went at one another. In our current situation, they hold all the commanding heights.

216 @205...I know every song on this album.

My brother, in addition to being insane and brilliant, had great taste in music. We went to many concerts together from HS through college.

We would laugh til we cried even as adults. Could read each other's minds (I was 2yrs older). He made me humble & I never thought I was "all that" because of him.

The main thing we fought over was the remote control for the new color TV in 1965. For a decade we rarely brawled, then, whammo! Torture time! We'd get sent to our rooms upstairs & continue to argue over the groovy "intercom" of the new house (1964). My parents listened in the den.

I once catapulted him up the stairs during a brawl & he crashed on the landing loudly. I really got into trouble then, but totally worth it!

He could stop an argument by saying, "Don't you flare those nostrils at me!" (he called me Pig Nose). He knew it would make me laugh.

Defended me in HS when a guy I did not even kiss at a dance said he did all sorts of nasty things. I told him, oh, hell, no!

He was in our wedding & approved of my husband and we all had some crazy adventures when he visited out West. Will always miss him.

It was only useful in locations where the military had their own long distance comms. No use in CONUS. So, when I separated, as a draftee, I was supposed to put in 3 more years active reserve (Reserve or NG) and then 1 year inactive reserve. No slots for that MOS in US, and the only cross train slot was for comm controller for an ASA units. I went to work for a.company in a small town in Ohio. Closest reserve ASA unit was in upstate NY. For the next 3 years, I filled out a form certifying my location. At the end of 6 years I got my discharge, with only 1 year, 11 months, and 27 days on active duty - early out returning from overseas. Never went to even one reserve meeting or 2 week summer camp.
So, my original mos was a WW2/Korean war number.

Correct!

1) you're a cell.
B) you're a ball of undifferentiated cells.
iii) you're a ball of undifferentiated cells with one hole in it..... that one.

The other fun fact: humans are female by default. If you're male, those hormones and that development don't begin until about week 12.

That's why men have nipples. They started developing before the blueprints showed up and the foreman said "hey, wait, we don't need those! Well, heck, leave the spigots on the outside o the house, we just won't run plumbing to them."

The foreman also had to deal with the pre-developed outer labia.

"There's no door here? Ok, glue 'em together and we'll call it a scrotum. Like a bay window, but wrinkly."

Which is why guys have a scar/seam (the scrotal rathe) down the middle of their sack.

Yet another issue with Vancouver and environs is the immigrant Chinese population. Canada.has very(!) good relations with China. Much of the support for that position is provided by the "overseas" Chinese in the west. Most of them got to Canada when the UK agreed to turn over Hong Kong to the tender mercies of the CCP. As citizens of a Commonwealth territory, they were allowed to.emigrate to any other Commonwealth country, irrespective over any immigration restrictions the receiving country may have. Seeing the handwriting on the wall, many moved family and fortune to Aus, Z and Canada. You'd think that they would know better, but cultural.ties are strong.
Having them in the US would add... unneeded complexity... to our relationship with Xi etc al.
