At some point the transfer of the momentum, with high enough mass and velocity, no matter how well distributed on the target with perfect body armor, will kill just by sudden impulse of the target. The only ways to protect against that is to greatly expand the time range of transference, like with a giant loonytoon bouncy spring or redirect the projectile in a way that imparts a small fraction of the momentum to the target.

This where conservation of momentum comes into play -
Weight of man at rest + weight of cannonball x speed1 (say 1000 fps) = man + cannonball going downrange at say 900 fps... But the forces of near instant acceleration would leave most man bits going laterally outward.

During the Battle of Mobile Bay, the Confederate ironclad (the Tennessee, I think) took so many hits that the doors to the gunports jammed shut (you closed them after each shot for obvious reasons). Two crewmen tried to jimmy them open and a shot hit the doors as they were pressed up against it. The doors held against the shot, but both men were killed instantly and their remains were shoveled into a bucket.

Harlan Ellison wrote that one. I remember before I was online, I had always thought that was one of the best TOS episodes of all, but I never heard people talk about it.

Later when online polls became a thing, turned out that that one and Tribbles are regarded as the two best TOS episodes of all. (Balance of Terror is a close third)

And amazing that with just one not so big part in one episode, Joan Collin’s became one of the most memorable guest stars that Original Trek ever had on.

lol that reminds of the movie “Enemy Mine” with Dennis Quaid and Lou Gosset Jr. After they thought filming was finished they showed it to the studio execs; but they said “where’s the mine?” Director and writer said “no that’s a literary phrase” but the execs said “No, you gotta put a mine in it or you’ll confuse people.” (Only people as dumb as them)
So the climax of the film became a big fight in an enemy mine. The execs insisted.

They invented gunpowder, too. Their military tech in particular stagnated because the combination of Manchu horse archers and Han infantry was impossible for any of the neighbors to beat. So they got lazy.

They were able to build Gewehr 88 rifles (using German tooling) by the 1890s. I have a Mauser 98k built in 1945 and it was so well made as to be parts compatible with German weapons.

274 Shameless self-promotion aside, I'm getting a sense that the wheel of the dynastic cycle is about to turn again. The CCP has really screwed things up. They had a great thing going, but between the one child policy and then constantly pissing on the rest of the world to the point where Trump became possible, they've thrown away all their best cards.

Their industrial buildup is marred by indifferent quality control. You never know what you're going to get and there are rumors that there are two grades of equipment - those used for testing and QC, and the shitty stuff they give to the troops.

And classic Chinese miscalculation - they're spending like crazy building aircraft carriers they don't need while their people are going hungry and getting sick. No housing, rampant unemployment NO SAFETY NET, and so yeah, people are getting pissed.

They were still using muzzle loading stave cannon during the Boxer rebellion. The English stopped using stave cannon and moved to cast iron in the late 1600's
To learn western technology they had understand western science which required accepting western cosmology, which many in the Imperial court were unwilling to do -- much of the pretext of the Imperial system was based on theories that the world was unchanging unless it was in its nature to change. That was underscored by the possible loss of status in a new shifting world.
The Europeans did not have that luxury, since they spent their time cutting each others' throats.

By the time Europeans arrived in force, the Ch'ing had subdued every external enemy. Why spend money on weapons you don't need. Horse archers and matchlocks were sufficient. All branches atrophied. Since military service has zero status in the Confucian hierarchy, troops were just bandits in uniform, and giving them top-notch weaponry was an invitation to disorder.

Honestly, you can accuse the CCP of making the opposite mistake: China has no bordering threats. No neighbor can or wants to threaten her. So why waste a small fortune on armaments you don't need when your people desperately still need internal improvements? Why not provide free public schools, unemployment insurance, free clinics?

336 So, who else is sending troops to Greenland next? Luxembourg??

Posted by: runner at January 14, 2026 09:45 PM (g47mK)

337 So, just for kicks, I re-read my concluding chapter, and OF COURSE there was a typo. Ugh. It never ends.

But I stand by it. I think my skepticism is being borne out.

Obviously, after all that work, and then digging deeper, I'm more informed than when I wrote the book (I hadn't thought of youtube as a source, honestly), but I'm content with it.

The Dynastic Cycle combined with my proprietary Three Generations Problem seems to be coming true. Hopefully it's not too messy.

We've reached that point in the movie where the punk underlings get all full of themselves and talk back to the Godfather.

Yeah. You put your squad into Greenland to prove your point, eurotrash.

This was outside the scope of the book (and to be honest, a lot of the information only became recently available), but China's small arms are a fascinating subject. Just to review: when Europeans started kicking their asses, China needed to upgrade and turned to...Germany. It made sense. Germany had few concessions but wanted to screw the British and the French, so giving China modern weapons was one way to do it.

I mentioned the Gw 88 (aka Hanyang Rifle), but I kind of glossed over the fact that in 1935, Germany sent a full slate of advisors and technical experts to help Chiang Kai-shek kill the Reds. Fully 10 divisions of infantry were fully equipped with German helmets and web gear, and China got the tooling to make Kar 98k rifles, which were of excellent quality. These troops crushed Mao's goons and the Long March would have been pointless if Japan hadn't invaded when they did in 1937. The Germans had a treaty with Japan, and pulled out, only to be replaced by... the Soviets!

350 Anyway, when the Chicoms finally win, they model themselves on Soviet stuff, yada yada, but China consistently failed to make a homebrew design, in part because Mao crushed any kind of original thinking.

That's still a problem. You can't have everyone waiting for "Xi Jinping Thought" and expect them to innovate.

356 I remember when the Berlin Wall went up. I could not envision a day when it would come down. Then it did.

I remember the Cold War and the threat that the USSR would persist nigh-eternally. Then it fell.

I remember when Iran fell to the mad Mullahs and it seemed we would never see those lovely Persian gals again. And yet, burkas are being shed.

357 They also invented cast iron and had Jesuits camped in Kowloon with a foundry, and still could never build a decent cannon until the 19th Century
